J

ulie Speed, Chicago, Illinois, b.1951 After dropping out of Rhode Island School of Design at age 19, Julie Speed spent her twenties moving around the U.S. and Canada working pick-up jobs (house painter, horse trainer, ad writer, farm worker etc.) until moving to Texas in 1978 where she settled down and taught herself to paint. She switches back and forth regularly between oil painting, printmaking, collage, gouache and drawing, often combining disciplines. Utilizing her keen sense of the absurd, Speed ponders the big questions—the role of religion, isolation and longing, sexuality, sin and guilt—with a sly, sometimes dark, sense of humor and a steadfast refusal to offer the viewer any tidy resolutions. It is the emphatically open-ended and omnivorous nature of her work, combining anxiety, erotica, and violence with the subversive power of beauty that puts Speed in the vanguard of a return to figurative painting in contemporary art. Speed has exhibited throughout the United States and internationally at numerous galleries and museums. Two monographs by UT Press have been published on Speed’s artwork: SPEED, ART 2003-2009 and Julie Speed: Painting, Constructions and Works on Paper. Speed’s artworks can be found in a number of public collections including Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The Art Museum of Southeast Texas, The Grace Museum, The McNay Art Museum, The Contemporary Austin and the San Antonio Museum of Art.

A

ron Wiesenfeld makes paintings and charcoal drawings in which he evokes a reality that is at once familiar and mysterious. These poetic and carefully composed fragments are windows into an autonomous world that continues off the edges of the canvas. They trigger stories in the imagination that can take the shape of fairy tales, or more complex forms, questioning modern-day alienation. References to art history, mythology, and pop culture converge without hierarchical order amid the cluttered remainders of manufactured landscapes, or baroque scenes of nature in glorious overgrowth. The people that populate his work embark on secret errands into veils of falling snow and twilight. His works have a restrained and focused tone, inviting contemplation of this intimate space, silent but for murmurs of the ominous. Among the publications his work has appeared are Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Art In America, and The Huffington Post. His work has been in a number of museum shows, including The Long Beach Museum of Art, Bakersfield Museum of Art, and The Museum Casa Dell’Architettura in Italy. His paintings have been used for covers on 9 books of poetry, including “The Other Sky”, a collaborative book project with poet Bruce Bond. In 2014 a large monograph of his work titled “The Well” was published by IDW Press. Born 1972 in Washington D.C., Aron Wiesenfeld grew up in Santa Cruz, California. He currently lives and works in California.
