EVOKE
Contemporary has developed a strong reputation for fostering the careers of a broad spectrum of prominent artists of both the American and international art scene. The established artists of EVOKE Contemporary have a strong history of institutional shows and artwork in permanent museum collections. The gallery features some of the most recognized artists working today in the genres of figurative painting and sculpture including Alice Leora Briggs, Javier Marín, Patrick McGrath Muñiz, Lee Price, Wade Reynolds, Jorge Santos, Julie Speed, Aron Wiesenfeld and Kent Williams. Some of the foremost American landscape painters such as Lynn Boggess, Jeremy Mann and Louisa McElwain are represented by the gallery. In 2019 the gallery introduces Ester Curini, realist painter of animals striving to raise awareness to their importance in our ecosystem. Also new to the gallery this year are Seth Armstrong, Christopher Burk and Gregory Ferrand. Interlopers: Works on Paper opens on April 26th introducing the art of Sue Bryan, Marina Fridman, Richard Morris and Bob Richardson. In May the gallery spotlights Kristine Poole and Francis Di Fronzo in a collaborative exhibition. Parallels is an exhibition presenting the commonality of two voices working in different mediums: Kristine is a master figurative sculptor working in clay and Francis, a painter that romances and preserves post industrial Americana. With June - July comes a powerful exhibition, Preternatural by Michael Scott documenting the events of nature and the landscape as a timeless monument deserving of preservation, or an ever-changing place that is vulnerable and transient. Our much anticipated annual Spanish Market Group exhibition, Sin Fronteras (Without Borders) opens on the 25th of July presenting the art of Nicholas Herrera, Patrick McGrath Muñiz and Thomas Vigil. The second half of 2019 the gallery features an exciting line up of solo exhibitions by Jeremy Mann, Alice Leora Briggs, Patrick McGrath Muñiz and Carlos Maier. In honor of its tenth anniversary, the gallery celebrates this landmark year with a series of group exhibitions - opening its doors to an emerging group of creators. Check the gallery’s exhibition page for more information on these special events throughout the year.

T
he foundations of Seth Armstrong’s urban landscape paintings, the ground upon which his folk-infused hyperrealism and Hudson River School charisma are composed and layered, is the influence of the Dutch Masters whose work he studied during the formative years of his career. From that art historical legacy Armstrong has derived a primordial fascination with the affecting emotional quality of warm and cold light and complex shadows, and with how to render the tactile quality of luminosity with the tools of a painter. It’s the Dutch Renaissance that explains his particular love for the so-called Magic Hour, though it is a Southern California hallmark. His accomplishments as a colorist also derive from this influence, informing his technique of underpainting which imparts his scenes with a perceptible glow verging on the light-box in intensity, that can beckon the eye from across a room even at the smallest scale, or seem to illuminate architecture, lamp-like, when large. K
nown for creating highly detailed animal portraits set against stark white backgrounds, Italian-born / New York-based painter Ester Curini isolates her subjects on a blank canvas allowing her to concentrate on a subject’s essential characteristics, and, at the same time, on what is essential to her as an artist. Curini’s subjects appear anthropomorphic with their human poses and matter-of-fact gazes, often turned directly back at the viewer. Ester strives to connect the urban population with nature through her painting, and most importantly to raise awareness about their importance in our ecosystem.

G
regory pulls on influences as wide ranging as comics, Mexican muralists, and 1950’s fashion to create paintings that reveal the beauty of living. His background in film is evident in the strong use of narrative he employs to tell stories about characters and situations that do, have, and will exist; gently unmasking the psychological or emotional state of the subject, inviting the viewer to share and/or identify. The contemporary and retro elements are unified by Ferrand’s detailed compositions, precise rendering and graphic-novel style. His wry paintings often juxtapose multiple planes of existence within one moment packed with witty asides.

MICHAEL SCOTT Introducing
T
here’s a long history in American Art of using the landscape as metaphor for spiritual and political purpose. The land has become our greatest monument, our own version of the European cathedrals. In the creation of these paintings my hope is that the viewer finds a higher order within the landscape- finding a sacredness, and awareness that is not apart from us but rather a part of who we are.
