WE CHOOSE TO REUSE! SUSTAINABILITY CALL TO ACTION

We are making a simple change that will have a significant impact. In Jones, we have been providing disposable cups, paper towels, spoons and stirrers. These singleuse, disposable items are nature intensive products needing water, trees and energy alongside plastic, glue and other materials and over 98% never get recycled.

We are at the beginning of our journey as a Responsible Business and are looking to reduce our impact. From this September we will cease ordering the following disposable items.

• Disposable Cups

• Wooden Spoons

• Wooden Stirrers

• Paper Towels

Hand dryers, reusable cups and teaspoons will be available as a replacement, and we will be stocking up on these items. The stats and figures are undeniable. Here are but a few:

• 22,000 coffee cups are disposed of in Ireland every hour, that is 528,000 every day or 200 million a year.

• Most single-use “paper” cups contain a polyurethane coating, making recycling difficult and rare. Less than 2% are actually recycled.

• Over 40% of plastic created annually is for single-use items.

• Four billion trees, or 35% of trees felled, are used for paper.

• Annual consumer waste has increased more than tenfold from 40kg in the 1950s, to 560kg of waste per person now.

• 12 billion gallons of water are used in the making of paper cups annually.
