editor’s note
A Big Hello! February is here already and I for one am glad to see the back of January. It is such an anticlimax after December with all its celebrations; all you have in January is excess bills and extra turkey weight! February always brings a smile to my face – it’s a sense of new beginnings and that’s what we’re hoping this issue of Evolve magazine will give you; a sense of new beginnings. Whether that be through tips on love for the newly coupled or newly single fabulous girl we’ve got it all here in our special Valentine’s edition. But if you are anything like me, not wanting to get involved with the commercial side of Valentine’s Day and all you really want to do is go shopping for your next ‘Fabulo-cious’ (yes, this is my own made up word and yes, I like it :-)) curvy outfit then we have not let you down either. We have the low down of the hottest plus size designers of the moment sure to get your pulse racing. What about the launch, I hear you say – sorry I could not make it, I hear you say... No problem, is my reply. In this edition we have the inside scoop with exclusive pictures of the amazing Evolve Launch party for all those who could not make it through the hideous snow!! Fantastic time was had by all, but you did miss my amazing speech. :-) All in all we hope you thoroughly enjoy this issue of Evolve Magazine. A lot of hard work has gone in to it so I am looking forward to relaxing and reading it cover to cover with a large glass of wine. Don’t miss out on Levi Roots saying why he loves the fullfigured woman or our lingerie fashion spread. ALL this month in Evolve... See you in April Be Proud… Be You Rianne Ward

The event sparkled with the best in Europe’s brightest and most stylish Plus Size personalities including; Vivien Lawless, designer of Viviana by the House of Dynasty (Dynastyuk.co.uk) and Thibault Masson, CEO of blankwww.plussize-tall.com. The gorgeous host models Emmaunella Gascoigne, Rebecca Collins, Veroinica Folie, Ciara Hilton, Sarah Lupai and Androulla Constantinou showcased the glamorous, Red Carpet style Viviana evening gowns to perfection. The evening was kicked off in impressive style by Lush, a fresh, upcoming artist and entertainer, recently back from a tour with Oscar award-

The party goers were certainly warmed up and raring to go after Lush’s blistering display of tight dance steps and funky beats. The evening was a huge success. Evolve Magazine was so humbled by everyone involved and the huge effort that it took to get the show on the road. The weather did little to dampen Evolve or the party goers spirits. Getting my Tyra On... at the Plus Size Tall Model Comp
etition
2010 was a stellar year as far as plus size modelling and fashion was concerned. Models such as Crystal Renn, Ashley Graham and Lizzie Miller saw their careers suddenly gain momentum faster than anyone could have imagined, matched only by the burgeoning blogosphere of fashionable fat women causing a stir in the industry. Lauren Ding
N
ew York saw three plus sized fashion events descend on their city: Full Figured Fashion Week, a fashion week in itself dedicated to plus size models and fashion labels; Indie+, curated by plus size vintage store Re/Dress; and the One Stop Plus fashion show which gate-crashed New York Fashion week and stole all the headlines. With this in mind, lifestyle site Plus Size Tall decided to team up with the UK’s biggest plus size fashion brand, Evans, and create a campaign to launch one of our very own into the plus-sized modelling stratosphere. The initial response was enormous, with hundreds of beautiful plus sized women applying for their chance to represent the UK at Curvy Revolution, a celebration of plus sized women and fashion in Las Vegas next month. Eventually these were painstakingly whittled down to 15 finalists who converged on the glamorous Avalon in Shoreditch one Saturday afternoon to walk the catwalk - in some cases, for the very first time! After a morning with Runway trainee Chyna White (Britain’s Next Top Model, Mastering the Art of Wearing

High Heels) the contestants were transformed from quietly confident but slightly unsure to someone who would more than fly the flag for UK plus-sized fashion. Along with my fellow judges: Rianne of Evolve, Sue of Beautiful magazine, Rachel, creative Director of Evans, and Abbey of Hughes Model Management, I settled on a rather fabulous Chaise Longue where we watched the competition unfold. There were two walks: first, a dressed down outfit of a white top and jeans, followed by an eveningwear round with a uniform of black. What I loved was that each contestant styled herself, so you could get a sense of each personality. Style wise my favourite was definitely a lovely contestant called Catia, who rocked the most fabulous red heels I’ve ever seen with her evening outfit! After having seen each contestant walk both rounds, it was then time for questioning. We did pose rather difficult questions, asking about their reactions to negative press, casting rejections, or how they would feel about lingerie/swimwear shoots. To our pleasant surprise, every contestant felt totally ready for the more negative aspects of being a model and weren’t afraid, which was
just fantastic to hear. We also delved into their reasons for entering the competition, and what being a plus size model would mean to them. As you can imagine, it got emotional. In fact when the final contestant, Heather, was asked about her reasons for entering, she started talking about trying to be a body positive role model and started welling up, setting the room off. Each contestant absolutely blew me away with their intelligence, articulacy and passion, as well as their beauty. I was also immensely proud to see such racial diversity, as well as a diverse range of sizes with contestants on the larger end of plus size scale, rather than just size 14-16. That said, when the judges convened we all admitted that we gravitated towards the smaller contestants, perhaps because of their inherent confidence that comes with being more generally accepted by society. And we all unanimously agreed that it wasn’t right - as Sue said, this kind of unconscious discrimination “is what we’re all trying to change.” In the end, we all agreed that Kelsey was undoubtedly our number one, in fact for most of us she’d been our number one all the way through. Undoubtedly beautiful, with a fantastic figure, great sense of style and a bubbly personality, we thought she was a fantastic ambassador for UK plus-size fashion and could more than hold her own among the US modelling heavyweights. In second place was Serena - also beautiful (of course!), with great skin and buckets of confidence, it was actually in the
question round that she really shone for all of us; she was so passionate and had wonderful things to say about diversity in fashion. And in 3rd place was the bodacious babe Georgina, who had curves to die for, the cutest smile and the most vivacious catwalk of the day. All of us were really happy with our decisions, although as you can imagine I wanted to send them all to Las Vegas! Before this event I had said that I wasn’t too interested in the models themselves when it came to plus-size fashion. But being involved with this event, meeting the contestants and hearing how seeing women of similar sizes and bigger presented as something desirable, positive and not to be feared is in fact a powerful tool in combating the weight insecurities that have dogged our generation, I completely changed my mind. To be plus-sized, fat, overweight, fluffy, curvy, whatever you like to call it, in this society and to not be ashamed of that… well, it isn’t easy. To see a succession of women like the Plus Size Tall contestants walk tall, speak proudly, and look stunning was almost an act of revolution. It makes me feel so much pride to have been involved with such an event at all, let alone as a judge with such influential and inspiring women. Perhaps this will pave the way for similar contests and true size diversity in fashion; until then, I hope every contestant walked away from the event feeling the million dollars she is worth. february 2011 • 7

Bolero Holidays at Union Lido and the Wellness Spa Remember the good old days of campsites, non-electric lighting and drafty shower blocks? Well I’ve just come back from the modern Italian equivalent of the campsite, and it has blown my socks off! By Amanda Thomas
8 • february 2011
H
appiness is definitely a major ingredient of our health and for your full quota of happiness and contentment, this gem is the place to be! Bolero Holidays, within the site, is a British concern run for the last 25 years in Italy on the Union Lido campsite by John Robinson and his wife, Margaret. Their website says that calling Union Lido a campsite, is like calling a Rolls Royce a car, and that is a great way to describe what is offered. Bolero offers accommodation in mobile homes and in caravans on a site that can only be described as spectacular. If you have never experienced a mobile home holiday, finding out about the home itself is going to be your first port of call. Firstly, forget everything you think you might know about a mobile home holiday. Mobile homes are like luxury bungalows or ground level apartments. They have double and single bedrooms, lounge areas, kitchens, and bathrooms as well as excellent climate control depending on which time of the year you holiday abroad. I was as comfortable in Bolero’s mobile home as anywhere I have ever stayed and John’s inspired design to make the walk in shower big enough for two was a real bonus The site is situated in Cavallino on the coast just outside Venice. Within the site various tour operators offer accommodation ranging from caravans to chalets and even the resorts own hotel, while for the individual camper pristine fully equipped sites are available with hook ups to electricity, water and even Internet. I saw everything from one-man tents to sizeable camper vans on the site and met various different nationalities of holidaymakers. Apart from the immaculately kept nature of the site the swimming pools and even the beach are equally well kept. Lifeguards service any swimming area and then there is the Wellness Centre. And what can I say? The Wellness Centre on the site is the closest thing to heaven I have ever encountered. It consists of 9 mineral baths all cocooning the bather in bubbles and strong jets to ease away the tensions of life. The idea is to work your way
through Jacuzzi style large and small baths with differing salt contents starting at a delicious 34 degrees centigrade, dropping by degrees, ending with a Japanese hot foot bath (40 degrees centigrade) which involves walking over pebbles in a hot then a cold bath. All make you feel marvellous and pampered and the Sauna and Steam room with their accompanying ‘tropical forest’ shower offers along with the tropical rain forest affect, a ‘tropical fog’ setting. The Wellness centre is for adults only apart from a brief 2-hour period on a Tuesday morning and I would challenge anyone to find a more relaxing or rejuvenating experience. Beautiful wood decking with comfortable sun-loungers beside an infinity pool and even a couple of four posters on the upper deck invite the Wellness Centre guest to wile away the day floating between the baths and the sun-beds. The centre sits above the children’s pool which is convenient for families and the infinity pool looks out over the beach! And all this under the watchful eyes of Anna and Andrea who are there to make sure everyone gets the most from their experience. Other beautifying and edifying treatments are available there with massage and beauty treatments. You can check into the centre for 2 hours at a cost of 6 euros and 13 euros will buy you a whole day of luxury. And it really is luxurious, a real five star experience. Look out for the competition to win a week at Union Lido with spa access at the end of this article! The 2 km private beach is raked every day and water sports and diving are available. There are pedalos with slides incorporated in them and children’s play areas all on a beach that is safe and shallow and fully staffed by lifeguards. There is a great ‘corniche’ that runs the whole length of the site between the camp and the beach, fully paved, clean and perfect for that early morning run. For the more energetic there are beach volleyball tournaments and endless possibilities to be active. The site is very family orientated and children will think they are in heaven! It is safe and secure with movement of cars and even bicycles restricted. Kids clubs and even a train february 2011 • 9

HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE that winds through the site are really well thought out and will guarantee that any child has a holiday of a life-time. The site occupies 2 km on its own private beach on the Adriatic. It is heavily wooded affording privacy and shelter from the fierce heat of the sun in the summer. Although it can accommodate 11,200 people at capacity it would never feel that way. In fact it has the feel of a small holiday village with newsagents, pharmacies, shops, camping supply outlets, cocktail bars and even an optician! Two doctors live on site during the high season, and according to our hosts John and Margaret they are always quick to respond to any call for assistance. The take away pizzeria on site is wonderful, we watched the pizza chef making the dough and twirling it to stretch it in the time honoured way. We bought a family sized pizza to share between two of us and it lasted us three days! From a beach bar to an Internet café, an Asian restaurant and a pizzeria to a café serving buffet breakfast and all the pasta you can eat, everywhere, there really is no need to even venture outside of the site! If you are looking for the authentic taste of Italy you will find it in the excellent eateries on site. There are excellent bus services to the surrounding towns and to the ferry for Venice. The Information Centre on site will offer you all that you need to know about anything from currency and the weather forecast to daytrips and much more besides. One of the greatest advantages of this site is the fact that the multi lingual team can help with any aspect of the holiday, and if you are English speaking John Robinson and his team at Bolero will do you proud. Union Lido is an excellent place in which to base yourself in Italy with Lake Garda and Verona (of Romeo and Juliet fame) possible as day trips. I have to confess that I have not taken this type of holiday before but after my stay with Bolero holidays, I am a wholehearted convert! John and the team at Bolero are planning further innovations for next year, including parking for those who fancy driving down to Italy across the continent. One thing I know is that the Union Lido site and Bolero Holidays in particular will make sure you have a holiday you will never forget. And that is what keeps people returning to Bolero and Union Lido year after year. But if If Italy is a bit far for a quick pampering session then whatever your preference, the Sanctuary Spa Covent

Zowie Edwards’ guide to surviving
Valentines Day The Newly Single Ladies’ Guide to Staying Sane; and The Newly Coupled Ladies’ Guide to Ensuring Her Friends Stay Sane
relationship further. Callous? Yes. But it’s also rather more logical. No one is suggesting you should get all “Monica from Friends” and keep a list, but it is worth calmly allowing yourself to remember that, whilst he may over time prove himself to be perfect for you, nobody is, in fact, perfect. It is also makes good sense to make a concentrated effort to hang onto your sense of self during these early, heady stages of infatuation. If I had a pound for every friend who has hooked a dream hunk by being their amazing and interesting selves and whose interests have been reduced to one (i.e. him) within a frighteningly short space of time I’d be a very rich woman. The result is usually an unceremonious dumpage situation because,
. . . women tend to ‘tot up’ all the things they adore about their new man . . .
R
esearch shows that November and December are the most popular months to begin a new relationship (which, incidentally, always presents the “we’ve only been dating a few months what, if anything, should I get him for Christmas?” dilemma). The same, rather depressing, set of statistics show that, of these newly formed relationships, around 65% are likely to end during the month of January in the following year. We must therefore conclude that, come Valentine’s day, 35% of those reading this will be blissfully loved up and planning romantic meals for two/the purchasing of trinkets and heart shaped objects/suffering from snog induced stubble rash, whilst the other 65% will be summoning their single friends over for a gallon of Ben and Jerrys and to bemoan the male species for their inherent bastard-ness. Well, I from personal experience I have advice for both

camps. In the red corner we have (fittingly, since it’s the colour of hearts) the loved-up lady. Yes, he is wonderful, yes you have barely left the bedroom and YES you did tell us that hilarious thing he said the other day. But the fact still remains that you have only known him for three months or less and there is a distinct possibility that he might not live up to your, currently sky high expectations. Protecting your emotions at this stage doesn’t only stop your friends from physically throttling you, it is also a sensible safety measure. In these early stages, women tend to ‘tot up’ all the things they adore about their new man, whilst casually disregarding the things they find less palatable (or, to put it another way ‘completely fail to heed the obvious warning signs’). Men, take the diametrically opposite approach, by keeping a mental note of all the things they don’t like about you, thus allowing them to assess whether or not it is worth their while taking the
guess what? You are no longer the lady he fell for. If it doesn’t result in a chucking scenario, it’ll invariably cause your mates to relegate you to the “Smug Couple” file in their minds. Invitations will be less forthcoming. You will be cast into a social wilderness. Takeaways and DVDs will become a way of life. If this terrifies you as much as it does me then take heed. In the blue corner (fittingly, as it’s the colour of depression) we have the broken hearts. The fling has been flung. Festive memories of cosy snuggling in front of open log fires swim before tear-filled eyes. The most common emotion to register at this juncture is embarrassment. To prevent the shame of having blabbed to all and sundry about your fantastic new relationship, see advice for new couples above. However, if you’re anything like
me and 99% of other females out there, the damage has already been done. For cures, a quick straw poll of my friends (who are by no means experts in the fields but have collectively amassed a lot of heartache) suggests the following: • Be your own best friend. All too often it’s a woman’s default reaction to blame herself. Be kinder to yourself. Remember that you are wonderful and it is his loss; however…. • Learn something from the entire debacle. If you were at fault then recognise that and use the knowledge for your next relationship; to assist you with this….. • Call on a genuine good friend. By this we do not mean the one that always tells you exactly what you want to hear. We mean the one who will objectively assess the situation and then take you for a glass of wine. A further note on the season: I write regularly on the trials and tribulations of this crazy thing we call “love” and yet Valentine’s Day is probably my least favourite day of the year. A time when men are forced to cram their collective efforts into being romantic in the most obvious and clichéd of ways. A time when the tube carriage is divided into those smugly clutching bouquets and those desperately studying their shoes. This Valentine’s Day I will be enjoying a meal with two of my very best and very funniest girlfriends and actively eschewing anything red, heart shaped or vomit inducing. Happy Valentine’s, Evolve Readers! E

Bringing Sexy Back! It’s amazing how a little lace and satin can really make us feel sexy from the inside out. Whether it’s for the love of your life or just to perk yourself up, great lingerie is always a winner. Here Rachel Onamusi, owner of red hot lingerie site, Tempestra answers your questions on all things underwear. BRA CRAZY There are so many types of bra these days, balcony, plunge, push up, what should I choose when I need comfort and support but still want to look cute? This is a question I hear all the time, and the answer is...they’re all great. If you’re wearing the right bra for your size and it is well made, it should be both supportive and comfortable. Different bras work well under different outfits and give a different silhouette. A plunge bra can be worn under a low-cut outfit without fear of wardrobe malfunctions. A balcony (or balconette) bra is cut almost straight across the cups. This gives an ample silhouette, and is great for strutting your stuff; think Christina Hendricks! A push up bra does exactly what it says on the tin, and gives you that extra va va voooom! So, if you want to make sure all eyes are on you for that special
occasion a push bra is the way to go. Can anyone say, hello boys! STOCKING I’ve always wanted to do the whole stockings and sexy lingerie thing but at a size 18/20 and 44E am I too big to pull this off without looking like a whale? Of course not! I’ve always been of the mind that the only thing you need to pull off sexy lingerie is confidence! Believe me when I say I have seen some curvy ladies who have put smaller gals to shame. Start with something like the Shirley of Hollywood Floral Tapestry Basque and match with stockings specially created for voluptuous thighs. A basque is the perfect way to show off your best assets whilst also hiding a multitude of sins. As long as you find your inner goddess and exude confidence you will look absolutely sensational!
MIND PLAY I’m really conscious about my size and body so I prefer lingerie that leaves more to the imagination. My husband loves my curvy shape, but I would feel more confident if I was a little covered but still sexy. What do you recommend? I think sexiness is all about confidence, so you will instinctively feel more beautiful once you’re comfortable. Camisoles and baby doll night gowns provide a perfect balance of sexy and demure. Add some accessories such as stockings or boa for extra fun. Might I suggest: RED HOT I LOVE to see my wife in red lingerie, but she thinks red is for hookers. Is there any sensual red lingerie out there that will change her mind? Of course there is! Red is actually my favourite colour, but as we’ve said before, you’ve just got to tread carefully. Either of the following are sure to get your wife’s approval and your heart racing! E

The Strapless or Multi-way Bra: A really versatile bra that’s as essential as it is self-explanatory. There was a time when you wouldn’t want to run for the bus in one of these, but they’ve come along in great strides and Panache offer the Evie range that is both comfortable and supportive, and goes up to an H cup. (IMAGE 3) For more functionality, a multi-way bra will make short work of outfits with one strap, halter neck or racer back. Try the Panache Zara Multiway Plunge Bra – available up to a 38 inch back and a G cup.
If you want to be sure you look confident in any outfit, there are certain staples you just have to have in your lingerie drawer. With this selection, you can be sure that you will always present the sexiest, smoothest & best version of yourself. Rachel Onamusi
The Bra Because we’ll all get by with a little help from these friends! Every girl needs good fitting bras – and that includes you, Little Miss A Cup! The best way to ensure your bra fits well is to get measured professionally, and to do it often (once every two years or after any hormone-altering changes like child birth, coming off the pill etc). If you can’t get a professional fitting, you can measure yourself at home with the help of a tape measure and a mirror just make sure you know what you’re doing. Once you’ve done that, the fun can begin!

The Essentials Day-To-Day Bras: This can be plain or lacy and any cup style but ensure you have a white, black and nude to cover all clothing colour combinations. The keyword here is comfort. There isn’t an exact science for this, but as you know, there are always one or two bras in your lingerie drawer that you end up wearing to death. Once you feel comfortable in a bra, buy two or three in the exact same style and size to ease the wear and tear of the old faithful.
The T-Shirt Bra: This bra is a plain-front, moulded bra. It usually comes in black, white or beige, and is perfect for wearing under light or transparent tops. It may look boring, but let’s face it: there’s nothing worse than trying to hold a serious meeting and getting the distinct impression that no one is looking at your face. Panache do a fabulous line in the Superbra range called the Porcelain - available to a 38 inch back and a G cup. Just be sure to get a colour that complements your skin tone.
The Classic Brief: The original panty offers the most front, side and back coverage than any other brief. It features a highrise waist, low-cut thighs, and is just perfect if you need your security. The French Knickers: All the comfort of your boyfriend’s boxers, only more sensuous. Irresistible’s Oriental Desire briefs are the final word in luxury.
Bottoms Up... So once you have the front looking fabulous it’s only fair the back gets the same treatments so here is a run down of the essentials in underwear that will keep that bottom looking perfectly poised and pert.
The Ooh La La Bra: The special bra for turning the heat up when the lights go down. Opt for a bra that makes you feel comfortable as well as sexy. Keia and Curvy Kate do fantastic ranges in sexy bras that go up to H and J cups respectively. The Tease Me and Thrill Me ranges from Curvy Kate in particular are drop-dead gorgeous! (IMAGE 8) The High Rise AKA Bridget Jones Knickers: For those days when you just want to feel comfortable, the high-rise knickers are hard to beat. Triumph offer the Triumph Shape Sensation, but watch out for VPL!
The Essentials The Thong: Banish ‘Visible Panty Lines’ forever with a good thong. Not to be mistaken for the G-String, this is less intrusive and still does the trick of giving you a sleek silhouette underneath your clothing. The Boy Short: If you’re wearing clothing loose enough to allow it, the boyshort is the optimum in comfort. Try by...

Bethan Price
Plus size brands RIGHT NOW!
H
ere’s an embarrassing revelation - during my teens I dressed like a boy! Not because I wanted to look like a boy (actually I wanted to look like Gwen Stefani), but because it was practically impossible to find anything stylish or trendy to fit my size 22 body, and so I was stuck with baggy men’s t-shirts and hoodies. Thankfully, the age of the internet is now upon us and fabulous clothing that fits me is just
a click away. My name is Bethan and I blog about plussized fashion at www.pretty-in-plus.com These are a few of my favourite plus-size brands that I’ve discovered since my awkward teen years. Some of them are based here in the UK while others are based overseas, but the thing they all have in common is that they make beautiful clothes in sizes that fit, and you can have them delivered right to your doorstep.
Anna Scholz www.annascholz.com London-based designer Anna Scholz designs some of the most beautiful plus-sized clothes in the world. Her clothes are split into two collections: The White Label Collection focuses more on prints and classic pieces whereas The Black Label Collection is a bit edgier and younge r. Although prices are higher than others mentioned here the design and quality means it is definitely worth a look at the website. What they do best: Wrap dresses with beautiful prints. Size range: 12 - 28 Price range: £100 to £350

Style 369 www.style369.com It’s easy to look at Style 369 as Evans’ younger sister. They are both owned by the Arcadia group (the company behind Dorothy Perkins and Topshop) and stock a lot of the same clothing, but Style 369’s focus is a much younger market and so the clothes tend to be a bit more edgy. What they do best: Evans’ clothes without the boring bits. Size range: 14 - 26 Price range: £20 - £60
Monif C www.monifc.com If you’re looking for a knockout dress that nobody you know is going to have, then look no further. New York based designer Monif C is fearless when it comes to colour and details, and the result is a line that is sexy, luxurious and feminine. Her swimwear amazing too. Prices are a little higher than the other brands we’ve mentioned but the quality and design are second to none. Well worth that investment buy! What they do best: Cocktail dresses with attitude. Size range: 16 - 26 Price range: $200 - $400
is
TORRID www.torrid.com Torrid is something of a plus-size powerhouse in the states and have lots of stores nationwide. In the beginning they catered mostly to plus-size Goths and punk rockers. Since then they’ve widened their range somewhat but it’s still a great place to pick up edgier things like military detailed jackets, corsets and fishnet tights. If that’s not you’re your cup of tea there’s a lot of more girly stuff that make it still worth a look. It caters to a fairly young audience so it’s also the place to go if you’re after things like twilight t-shirts or hello kitty hoodies in bigger sizes. Shipping is fairly expensive though, so it’s only worth ordering something if it’s really special. What they do best: Fun, edgy pieces that are different to anything you can find here in the UK. Size range: 12-26 in US sizes (that’s 14 – 28 to you and me) Price range: $20 - $80
ASOS CURVE www.asos.com Asos.com’s curve range launched last year and instantly became a favourite amongst plus-size fashionistas. They sell a good mix of classic pieces like simple shift dresses and pencil skirts, but they also sell a lot of bold, fashion-forward clothes like statement dresses and tapered chinos. It’s definitely worth a look, especially if you’re after something that nobody you know is going to be wearing. Some people have trouble with the sizing, but returns are free within the UK so it’s easy enough to keep trying until you get it right. What they do best: Classic staples and bold, fashionforward dresses. Size range: 20 - 26 Price range: £20 - £80
Domino Dollhouse www.dominodollhouse.com ion Domino Dollhouse is an online fash couple boutique that was launched in the last Tracy of months by plus-size fashion blogger gs that Broxterman. The store focuses on thin Prices are are fresh, fun and often fairly kitsch. low and shipping to the UK is reasonable. Sizing can seem a bit odd at first glance because each item’s individual measurements are listed, but this is fact incredibly helpful to ensure a good fit. What they do best: Fun things that can’t be found elsewhere. Size range: Varies from item to item. Price range: $10 - $45 E

Love
Levi Roots became a household name in 2007, when he appeared on Dragon’s Den with his now famous “Reggae Reggae Sauce”. Prior to appearing on the show, he enjoyed a successful music career, was a friend of Bob Marley and even performed for Nelson Mandela in 1992.
N
ow, in addition to running his successful business empire, he visits schools and prisons in an attempt to inspire others with his story. Evolve caught up with this truly remarkable man to talk business tips and pulling dishes! E: You have enjoyed amazing success both in the music and food industries. Which is most important: good food or good music? L: You have started me off with the hardest question! I would have to say good music, though, because whatever you do in life is about inspiration. Without inspiration nothing would have any effect. Music would inspire me to cook a good meal. E: What is the most romantic song in the World? L: Bob Marley – Is this love.
E: Your job has taken throughout the World. Where is the most romantic place in the World? L: It has to be Jamaica. Nuff said.
BBC. To see people rushing to buy something that a few days ago I’d been making with my children – I’ll never forget that day.
E: We thought you might say that, Levi! Have you ever dated a fuller figured woman? L: Of course! I’m a Jamaican! It’s stamped all over me! Big women are in my family. Women are women to Jamaicans. It isn’t about size, it is all about the vibe.
E: What is your proudest achievement so far? L: Keeping the family together, I think. The journey has been fantastic ever since Dragon’s Den – But money has not affected us in the way you might think. The most important thing that my Mum is still the head of the family and my kids are running my restaurant in Battersea. We are still in the flat we have always been in. We’re not riding off into the sunset with the millions!
E: What would you cook a woman in order to seduce her? L: In one of my books there is a recipe for “boat fish” – It was my first pulling dish! You have to cook it with someone else watching you or helping you – I used to show off to the girls how I could pick the bone out of the fish without gutting it. E: When you aren’t eating Caribbean fayre, what’s your favourite English dish? Do you have secret penchant for fish and chips? L: How do you know that? Did you read it somewhere?
Women are women to Jamaicans. It isn’t about size, it is all about the vibe.
E: We are psychic….. L: (*gives hearty laugh*). Well, it’s my absolute favourite! The best fish and chips I ever had was in Scotland. This was in my music days when I used to tour and we used to have MacDonalds and all the fast foods but fish and chips was always my favourite. E: What was it like the first time you saw your sauce on a supermarket shelf? L: I’m not a person that cries normally, it is hard for me usually, but I did cry that day. It was in Clapham Common Sainsbury’s and I’d been brought there by the
E: You visit schools and advise kids on how to make a success of themselves when they come from humble roots. What advice would you give to someone hoping to start their own business? L: Yes, that is such an important thing to do. I really wanted to do that from the start. I put it all in a book - “You Can Get it if you Really Want”, which will be available soon. It has all my inspirational tips. I actually don’t know much about business but I do believe I can inspire people with my story. The tips are simple things like having a plan and finding the passion. That is important. E: What makes you proud to be you? L: I’ve been going to a lot of prisons lately – Going back in and saying to kids this is where I have been. When I see where I am from and then get to walk out in a £5,000 Ozwald Boateng suit I think “the last time I went in I was in handcuffs”. It’s a journey which I wouldn’t change. But I am proud that I have gone through all that and still managed to come out as Levi Roots. E: What does the future hold for Levi Roots? L: Levi does Oprah – Levi cooks for the Obamas! We’re going to head over to the States. We are launching in the Caribbean and Canada with the sauce this year. We’re going international. I want to be the biggest black Rasta man that’s ever risen out of the UK! It’s a big ask but watch this space! “You Can Get it If You Really Want” is published by Mitchell Beazley and is available to pre-order now from www.waterstones.com

When it comes to Jealousy, women have a nasty tendency to overreact, judge, spitfire, and run Natasha and Jake
s p i h s n o i t a l Re By Natasha Devon
Up Lady ed v o L e th r fo e id u G e v A Tough Lo
Thwack! That glorious, onomatopoeic word could not be more accurately describe the noise that shook me out of my Bowie-on-i-pod induced revelry as I sat on a train this afternoon.
Jake Basford
O
f all emotions, jealousy has got to be the most unattractive and destructive in any relationship and yet it’s also one of the hardest to tame. For the today’s curvy lady, it’s also a bit of a minefield. Whilst our men might reassure us that they love our plus size bodies, all the women who are generally considered to be “sexy” in the public eye barely register a size 0. This leaves us constantly pitching the logical notion that our womanly bits are desirable against the might of an advertising and media industry intent on promoting androgynous beauty. Jake Basford, Psychology PHD, recognises this
32 • february 2011
contradiction. “If your man, for example, says he fancies Cameron Diaz, this means he has a specific liking for her, not all slender women generally. He does not expect you to emulate her. So chill”. Jake is renowned for no nonsense advice of this nature and, in times when we are saturated to the veritable brim with airy fairy new-therapy empowerment type platitudes, this is hugely refreshing. For this reason, I invited Jake to share his thoughts on relationships, the common pitfalls and how to avoid them:
Pitfall No1: Jealousy Jake says: “There is so much i could say on this subject, but basically it breaks down to trust. Do you trust him, and if not, why not? Skinny/curvy doesn’t matter because there is a reason he chose you in the first place. Men who are in LTR’s (Long Term Relationships - usually lasting months/years as opposed to days/weeks, categorised by “big steps” such as moving in, children, marriage etc etc) only ever cheat because there is something they are not getting at home, and that is usually emotional support. When it comes to Jealousy, women have a nasty tendency to overreact, judge, spitfire, and run. Girls, chill. Take a step back. Bitch, rant and rave by all means, but if you really love him - talk. Its alot easier than a break up.” Pitfall No2 - Not Feeling Appreciated Jake says: “Men are simple creatures. Unless you say you want more appreciation, then he aint gonna know. Also, not feeling appreciated stems from your own lack of self esteem, so possibly go try some risqué outfits, flirt with the cute office boy, and do some small things to boost your ego. Even if it’s just wearing your favourite scent. You’ll soon notice your appreciation going way up magically.” Pitfall No3 - Lack of romance Jake says: “This splits evenly into two bits: Romance and Sex. Romantically, men are dire. I know this coz I’m male, and gay, so I’ve seen it from both ends of the spectrum. So the simplest way of explaining it is that it’s not that men forget on purpose, but they aren’t sensible enough to keep
a calendar and circle the date of your anniversary, with a two week reminder. Sex is simple, variety is the spice of life. You bored? There is plenty of literature, video, advice, available in every medium. Pick up any magazine and it will tell you the same thing.” Pitfall No4 -Fear of Intimacy Jake says: “It’s a cover, and he is a waste of time. Men who are genuinely scared of intimacy don’t admit it to themselves. They claim to want to settle down whilst presenting you with a list of fabricated, nit-picking reasons why they don’t want to be with you. Men who want to play the field cite “fear of intimacy”. If you want marriage, house, babies etc, then don’t even waste your time, because you’ll find that he is in fact married with a child within a year and hate yourself.” Pitfall No5 -Dwindling Sex Lives Jake says: “If you’ve already read the previous sections then this should be blatantly obvious, but here’s the abridged version for the hard of hearing: SIT ON HIS FACE. Now. Go. Stop reading this and jump. You want a better sex life, take the reins.” And one final piece of tough love from our relationship guru: “There is a big overlaying message through this - If you’re spending energy to whinge, complain, rant and rave, then you’ve got enough energy to sort it out. Waiting for him to sit up and notice is about as helpful and useful as toilet made of paper.” E february 2011 • 33

Valentine’s Day Survival Guide… Being ‘Single and Fabulous’ has been acceptable since Sex and the City came along and broke all the stigma associated with being sans man. Suddenly women felt inspired, powerful, and driven; shooting up career ladders and finding that there was plenty of fun to be had with your best dressed female counterparts.
J
uggling work and frequenting the most exclusive cocktail bars in town became the way forward. Singledom was glamorised to the point where, even the most commitment phobic agents of the male population started getting a little anxious. However even these strong, proud and glamorous women can’t deny that they find one day in their social calendar more than slightly daunting. We may be pretending we are working late, visiting ailing relatives in Devon, or that we didn’t even realise what day it was all together but let’s face it, we all know when it comes around. Suddenly our taken friends are squealing like hyperactive pigs about some exclusive restaurant that their significant other managed to book, while we try and sound pleased, interested even, only to later hide our growing envy at the bottom of a wine glass, extra large. But who are we kidding? There is no escaping it, dreaded and feared it comes around once a year - Valentine’s Day. Most of us admittedly will seek solace in a tub of ice cream, bottle of wine, box of chocolates, or all of the above. We will try and make our excuses and hideaway till this dreaded day is over. It’s time us single gals take a new approach to this dreaded holiday, celebrating our freedom instead of covering it up like some shameful ailment or imperfection. I have come up with some fabulous Do’s for the most fabulous of single ladies. Follow my guide and make sure you never feel down on Valentine’s Day again! My Top Do’s for Single Girl Indulgence. Do Movie Night! Head to your nearest movie rental and pick up pop corn, ice cream and your favourite jumbo crisp pack! Throw on your most comfy pj’s and crack out the best DVD’s that you know won’t fail to entertain!

A classic rom-com to help you laugh and cry your way through Valentine’s Day surely has to be ‘When Harry met Sally’. This late 80’s film focuses on the nature of male and female friendship; can we really just be friends? It is a witty, intelligent and moving film that is well worth a watch. Maybe you may even start to look at your male friends a little differently...or why not go for some cheese and see My Best Friend’s Wedding, a hilarious film, with Julia Roberts at her comic best! No, there is no happy ending, but nevertheless you end up feeling fuzzy and squishy inside, and maybe, like all you need in life is a gay BFF. To get away from the lovey dovey schmooze, I recommend getting stuck into an art-house film! Under the production of the ever sexy Brad Pitt ‘The Year of The Dog’ makes for a great must see. It is a tale of a woman’s journey on a road of self discovery and personal transformation, which is both hilarious and heart breaking. If most movies leave you bored and uninspired, have a day of pure shameless indulgence! Break out the Sex and the City box set and let Carrie and the girls remind you why it’s great to be single and FABULOUS! Do have a Pamper Night. Whether alone or with the girls, it’s great to take some time aside and give your face and body a full revival. If alone, run a hot bubble bath, light some scented candles and put on a relaxing CD. If you have the girls coming over, go to Superdrug or Boots and pick up some inexpensive Face Masks, or Facial Kits! Face masks range in price with the cheapest starting at just £1!
Do Something out of the Ordinary. Whether you decide to take a dance class, cooking class, chocolate making workshop (now on offer on lastminute.com) there is a lot to try. Lastminute.com is the best online guide for ‘experiences’ if you want a good recommendation that has been tried and tested. Some of the websites top rated unusual experiences include; ‘Big Cats Photography Experience Day,’ from £145, ‘Design your own perfume’ from £49 (currently on a 25% special offer at £36), ‘Chocolate Making Workshop with Green & Black’ (now a lastminute.com exclusive offer if you take a friend!) Locations for all lastminute.com events will vary, so if you can’t make London there will be something amazing in a big city near you! Do Burlesque! Fortunately for you I am not talking about going to see the movie; I am talking about attending a real life glittery, bubbly, burlesque show! The Peacock Bar situated near Clapham Junction is renowned for its gorgeous and unusual Burlesque performances. Check out their ‘What’s On’ guide for details of upcoming shows and events. The dancers are mesmerising, and have a propensity to embarrass the boys in attendance, so for an electrifying atmosphere and plenty of cheesy glitz get you and your friends a booth reserved. This year the club is hosting a special Valentine’s Day event: ‘Hollywood Stars Dinner & Dance’ which is not one to miss with glamorous dress up an absolute must! If the Peacock bar doesn’t tickle your fancy then check out Volupte Lounge, situated in Holborn this is one of London’s more glamorous and pricier burlesque bars. With an extensive cocktail menu and listed in the Time Out Guide as one of 101 things to do before you leave London, it is definitely worth a visit. Do Karaoke! Karaoke ‘with cocktail’ Bars are the new sensation that has swept the UK in the last year or so! Celebrate this Valentine’s Day by singing your frustrations away to the best power ballads with your best girlfriends.
Hire a booth in your local Karaoke Bar and sing along to Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’, Pussy Cat Doll’s ‘I Don’t Need a Man’ and Kelly Clarkrson’s ‘Since Youv’e Been Gone!’ An hour of singing euphoria for up to 5 people costs around only £20 an hour! Singing your heart out has never been more fun! My Ultimate Top 5 Valentine’s Dont’s. Don’t call an ex, just because it is Valentine’s Day and you feel lonely. You will only regret it or feel foolish later. Valentine’s Day can send all of our heads into a fuzzy delirious spin of fake feelings, there is no need to create extra drama in your life by getting in touch with an ex. Don’t wallow in self pity, as it will leave you miserable, depressed and emotionally drained. What is the point in wasting a day of your life focusing on all the things you are missing, instead of focusing on the things that make your life full and exciting? Don’t get so drunk that you do something you regret! Going out and getting so drunk you lose control and end up in the embrace of a stranger is not the way forward. If you are only doing it to prove something to yourself then please remember you can validate your single status in much more healthier ways! Don’t feel like you are alone. All your single girl friends are probably finding this time a little bit difficult if not downright annoying, so if you haven’t made plans, just pick up the phone! Have a chat and re-connect with those you haven’t made the time to speak with in a while; you never know what great connections can be made. Don’t place too much emphasis on this holiday! This is not what real love is about. Valentine’s Day has simply become yet another over commercialised day, full of unrealistic ideals and money spending rituals. A good relationship should be celebrated every day, and not defined by a scene out of a movie. Whether you’re single and fabulous or taken and loved up, remember it’s just one day and not the true representation of your whole life. Whatever you do, Be Proud, Be You! february 2011 • 35

The key to successful make-up is to understand how to enhance your features using the best cosmetic formulations and colours around. If you research the best of the products available to you, brush up your application techniques and give yourself plenty of time to experiment, you can find the perfect look for you. Every woman can use make-up to enhance her looks, but the real secret is understanding your own beauty needs.

feel free to dust a little powder (with pink undertones, of course) on top of your foundation. It works, I promise! If you have oily skin, consider makeup that is a shade lighter than your skin as your make-up tends to turn a shade darker once it mixes with the skin’s natural oils. Sleek makeup Crème to Powder £7.29 is great for reducing the appearance of dark circles and scars. For Brightening: Giorgio Armani Blending blush duo 03, terra cotta/mocha £31.00 and if you want a more natural glow try Bobbi Brown Luminess Moisturising foundation £29 with Beverley Knight, Lip-gloss Stylo, £12.00 for a glossy and non sticky finish. DARK: You tend to have oily skin, which can turn foundation make-up a shade darker once it mixes with your skin’s natural oils. As a precaution, try makeup that is a little lighter than your skin. I find that foundations with a red/orange undertones work well for
darker-skinned complexions. If your skin is dry, then use a make-up colour that matches your exact skin tone. Ruby and Millie’s Base Formula Foundation £16.50 available at boots which comes in 12 shades. Finish off the look with YSL Teint Parfait, £21.50 and YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipstick SPF 15 £22.50. Diana’s Tips: Apply blush immediately after foundation - your whole face looks immediately healthier and you won’t be tempted to overdo your eyes and lips. To create a perfect lip line, stretch your mouth into an ‘O’ shape and fill in the corners with your lip pencil Shimmery eyeshadows can highlight wrinkled or aged eyelids, so you may prefer to use matte shades for a more finished look.
