publisher’s letter Dear Friend, Have you ever found yourself resisting the one thing you need most? Each January, whether from over-indulgence over the holidays, resolve inspired by a new year or a feeling of sluggishness from the winter months, I find myself wanting to incorporate more physicality into my routine. And yet, I catch myself time and again resisting the urge. So I took some time to reflect on my feelings about physical fitness and found that the resistance comes from feeling like I “have” to exercise more—when the thought of a strenuous, self-imposed regime is the last thing I want to add to my schedule. But then I think about the times I’ve been most fit: during childhood when playfulness came naturally; in teen years when friends and I would race each weekend to roller-skate on the Plaza; as a young mother when exercise involved playing games with my girls; and later when I took Zumba dance, belly dancing, t’ai chi, yoga, or went camping, hiking and kayaking—all natural forms of playfulness, rather than self–imposed “exercise”. I realized that exercise, and the need to be physical, is a joyful expression of Self. Play time is a gift. I’ve noticed that those who seem to have found the fountain of youth are those who have a playful personality, a physicality about them that inspires other to move—and grow. This year I challenge myself to find more ways to incorporate playfulness into my routine. Kansas City has a plethora of fun, life-enhancing, playful options including t’ai chi, yoga, IntenSati, laughter yoga and dance classes galore. Explore the articles this month on falun dafa, achieving your peak performance and t’ai chi. Then call some of our advertisers throughout the magazine or contact one of the practitioners in our Fitness Directory on page 16. Here’s wishing you a gloriously playful New Year.

paying it forward

John Two-Hawks in Kansas City Stone Spirit Lodge, in cooperation with Spirit Talkers Flute Circle, is very pleased to be sponsoring an appearance by John Two-Hawks in Kansas City, Missouri at Stone Spirit Lodge, 309 Westport Road, on Saturday January 29, 2011 at 3 pm. John, an Oglala Lakota whose ancestral homeland is the Great Plains, is a gentle, spiritual man who walks in the sacred traditions of his people. He began his musical and spiritual journey at the age of 6. His voice was his first instrument, and singing remains an incredibly powerful facet in his

multidimensional musical compositions. The acoustic guitar was the next instrument for TwoHawks, followed by everything from mandolin and piano to drums and mountain dulcimer.

Then came the American Indian cedar flute, the instrument that became his love, his passion and his eventual trademark. Mastering the cedar flute came easily for Two-Hawks, who makes complex maneuvers on it seem effortless. John feels the Spirit meant for him to play the cedar flute, and those who have heard or watched him perform emphatically agree. You are invited to experience this Grammynominated artist in a most intimate setting. Please purchase tickets directly at Stone Spirit Lodge. Cost is $15.00.

Dear Editor, I am writing this testimonial to "Pay It Forward". My experience with Luci Enyart is nothing short of a miracle! She is the amazing woman who literally transformed my life! I showed up on Luci's doorstep about two years ago. The Universe had thrown me head-first into the transformation pool and I was sinking fast. I had made the rounds with traditional, western medicine; the cardiologist called me an 'anomaly', the gastroenterologist threw up his hands, the neurologist passed me on with the advice to visit that well-known clinic in Minnesota. I could go on with the -ologist reports, but I think you get the idea. What ultimately worked was a body, mind, spirit approach—true healing on all levels. Luci was my gal! She took a multi-faceted approach, steeped in love, caring, and understanding. She was gentle when I needed gentleness, but she was also tough when I needed it. She gave me the bottom line and assisted me in dealing with difficult parts of my life that I was unable or unwilling to see. In other words, she called B*** S*** and reminded me it's my choice. She has taught me the invaluable lesson of taking responsibility for my own wellness. With Luci's assistance I am now truly living my life! —Kellie Eckles Lee's Summit, MO Contact Luci Enyart 816-721-3216; awesomelightbearer@yahoo.com

Chemo or Cannabis? implications of speaking out about this, Mr. Pedersen—suffering from fibromyalgia—states with plain conviction, “I would die without cannabis.” Despite the recent failure of Proposition 19 in California, Mr. Pedersen believes there is still hope for the use of cannabis as a curing agent. Educating the public with facts, he stresses, is the key. Links • Cannabis Patient Network:

It is one thing to kill a cancer cell, but the real question is: can you survive the treatment? This is the central concern regarding how we approach cancer, the plague of modern times. Len Richmond’s documentary What if Cannabis Cured Cancer? was shown at Aquarius Books & Gifts on Nov. 15, sponsored by the Kansas City Greens. Mark Pedersen, founder of the Cannabis Patient Network, attended as the main presenter of the viewing. Narrated by familiar counter-culture icon Peter Coyote, the film is a wellresearched account of the chemical benefits of the cannabis plant. Interviewing a multitude of doctors and researchers across the world, What if Cannabis… explains how certain compounds in cannabis, including THC, attack only cancer cells while actually protecting healthier ones. And here is the real kicker: with success! But its healing effects are not limited to just cancer. Cannabis contains compounds that work holistically with the entire human body on such conditions as epilepsy, bipolar disorder, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, neuropathic pain, depression, leukemia… the list goes on and on. The documentary also outlines the misinformation campaign by both government and media as to the ill effects of cannabis on users. For instance, it is an eyebrow-raising revelation that not a single recorded death has ever been attributed to cannabis, while it remains a Schedule I drug— along with heroin and meth—under the Controlled Substances Act. When asked if he is worried about the legal

Book Excerpt Sit Before You Veg By Cameron Alborzian If you’re like almost everyone I know, your first impulse when you get home from a long day at work or a busy day running errands is to grab a bag of chips, a beer, or some kind of snack, sprawl out on the couch, and watch TV for four hours before going to bed. You may have had a conflict with a co-worker or felt overwhelmed by the long lines at the supermarket, and with so much drudgery and frustration, the last thing you want to do is something productive—like reading to your kids, paying your bills, or finishing certain chores. This makes perfect sense. When we feel overwhelmed by the dense energy that fills our hectic lives, we think we need to neutralize the bad heaviness with things that supposedly make us feel good: eating sweet and oily foods, watching aimless television programs, and finding the most horizontal position we can for our bodies to experience weightlessness. While these may seem satisfying at the moment, they add heaviness to our material bodies, which burdens us and keeps us further entrenched in our own suffering. This exercise calls upon you to create a short sitting practice for yourself when you feel you’re ready to submit to your end-of-day impulses or even sleepiness at the office. It is designed to foster alertness, which will counter the inevitable lethargy of a taxing day. When you’re done with work or errands or have finished your dinner, find somewhere quiet in your home or office to sit in a basic cross-legged position. This can be in the middle of the floor, against a wall, or even on a chair with your feet on the ground if you find significant discomfort in sitting with crossed legs. Close your eyes, and take long and slow breaths. Breathe in through your nose for a count of three, and then breathe out through your nose for a count of six. Repeat this thirty times or however many times you feel comfortable with the exercise. The breathing will deliver more oxygen to your entire body, which will stimulate cellular activity in the brain and calm the nerves. In later

chapters you will learn more about breathing, sitting, and other elements of this exercise, but for now consider the following points: • As this exercise is designed to foster alertness, it is important to have an erect spine. If sitting cross-legged makes your shoulders slump forward and your lower back sink, sit on a couple of folded blankets or a yoga block to raise your pelvis. This will help to properly align your spine. • If breathing in and out through your nose is difficult for you, try breathing in through your nose and then out through your mouth. Once you’ve completed the breathing, sit for a moment and observe how you feel about vegging out as opposed to doing something you’ve been putting off. Do you want to spend the whole evening watching TV (the TV eventually watches you), or do you want to watch only one of the four shows? Do you want to eat those chips (which eventually become you), or are you willing to try a piece of fruit, sip some herbal tea, or not consume anything at all? A great first step in becoming more aware of your place in this material world is to challenge yourself to crave a lighter energy, and this awareness can begin with the heaviest hours of your day. he temperature was projected to plummet 50 degrees in less than 48 hours and I still had turnips in the ground. The wind was gusting to 30 mph and it was frigid. But there I was, delighting in each little white gem, a bit of buried treasure. The 5 x 5 foot patch filled two big buckets with turnips and their greens. I set them in my back entryway and proceeded to help my husband fix breakfast. Then I noticed it, this vibration. It was love. It was life,

So I challenge you at this time of new beginnings, to resolve to feed yourself from your own efforts, just you, the earth and the seed. Dig up a patch of your lawn, or put some soil in a pot. Add seed, water and wait. Nature does most of the work. For those who find that hard to believe, I recommend two books. Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening shows how to make gardening less labor, fertilizer, water and pest management intensive by abandoning rows and growing plants in square foot plots. Machaelle Small Wright’s Perelandra Garden Workbook I and II shows how to tap into the wisdom of the garden using applied kinesiology or muscle testing. Wright shares how to work with nature to create a garden in balance, one full of love, life, beauty and good eats.

and it was emanating from the buckets of turnips. I could feel it five feet away. “Honey,” I inquired and pointed to the turnips, “Do you notice anything over there?” He took a few steps toward the back door. “Whoa!” he stepped back, “Can we just hang out here the rest of the day?” Besides nutrients, besides great taste, food grown with love, care and respect contains love and life. It’s the difference between the produce grown in my backyard or by the mostly urban farmers who feed me most of the year and what passes for food in most grocery stores. Next time you are in the produce section ask yourself if it feels like a garden of life. Probably not.

~Body, Mind & Soul

As with any team, the answers I get working with nature are far better than any I might find on my own. I use her method on a daily basis in my garden. If a garden is too big of a step, hire a farmer to grow food for you by joining a CSA, Community Sponsored Agriculture. For an investment of, in most cases, a couple of hundred dollars or so, you can have a bag of produce so fresh it glows in the dark every week. I garden and participate in a CSA. My strategy has been to grow expensive things like berries and herbs, as well as my favorite vegetables that I can’t get enough of like sorrel. Comments from Dr Nancy on the Vitamin D controversy: Institute of medicine says, “No need to megadose vitamin D”.

Y

irst, some background for those who haven’t followed the latest news on vitamin D and calcium. On November 3, 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM), an arm of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, recommended increasing the amount of dietary vitamin D most Americans should get daily to 600 international units (IUs), triple the 200 IUs recommended in 1997. This was the good part of that report, but this is still lower than many doctors recommend. The IOM's findings are unlikely to be the final word on vitamin D, since the immediate reaction to the report was

highly mixed. I have quotes from several physicians that I feel are my mentors and experts on this subject. “The IOM said it based its recommendation on levels of vitamin D needed for bone strength and said there isn’t enough evidence to demonstrate that low vitamin D causes chronic diseases, as some new research suggests.” Andrew Weil, M.D. rebuts this: “In fact, low levels of D have been linked through population studies with a higher incidence of auto-immune diseases, a number of types of cancer, psoriasis, and diabetes.” “The IOM recommended that everyone from infancy through age 70 get 600 IUs of vitamin D daily and that those over age 71 get 800 IUs daily. Dr Weil states, “I disagree with these conclusions and will continue to recommend that everyone get 2000 IU of dietary vitamin D daily.” Vitamin D researcher Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D., also responds to the news reports of the IOM recommendations. “Dr. Holick told National Public Radio that he sees no downside to in-

creasing your vitamin D intake: ‘When I've been recommending for the past decade that people take more than the [officially recommended] 200 units, there was a lot of skepticism. Now they're recommending three times what we recommended in 1997. I suspect a decade from now that they'll be recommending another three- or fourfold higher increase'." Dr Andrew Weil says, “I agree. What’s more, I don’t think there is any possibility of harm in taking the vitamin D dosage I recommend. AND I believe evidence will continue to come in supporting the preventive benefits of the dosage I recommend, and possibly even higher.” Joe Mercola, M.D. says, "Unless these IOM findings are challenged, the public will accept it as true. Doctors, medical institutions, the media, and governmental agencies will all parrot these ultra-low recommendations on vitamin D dosage, pooh-poohing its important therapeutic benefits, and keeping the American public dangerously deficient in the vitamin. This will mean more colds, more flu, greater dependence on dangerous flu shots and antibiotics, more illness in general, more weak bones, more cancer, and many more deaths. Some experts calculate that proper vitamin D supplementation could save Americans $4.4 trillion over a decade—about $1,346 per person every year." Dr Mercola goes on to say, “In my view, many people still would not be able

to reach a therapeutically healthy range taking 4,000 IUs of vitamin D a day, which is the maximum dosage now recommended by the IOM. I've seen people who need double that, or more, to get to a level that's going to make a difference in their health. Again, the position of the Vitamin D Council, Grassroots Health and myself is that you need to adhere to the scientific vitamin D panel recommendation, which is a vitamin D level of 40ng/ml at minimum”. Please remember that you have the freedom to do your own research and are not obligated in any way to adhere to "government sanctioned" nutrient recommendations. In this case, conventional medicine is still lagging behind in their implementation of what the science shows about vitamin D. This IOM report’s recommendations are for those who want to proceed on their own without a doctor's advice. If you're under the care of a physician, this report is almost meaningless… It doesn't in any way preclude a physician from prescribing the usual dosages that they do; the 50,000 units once or twice a week. The only change I have made in vitamin D recommendations to my patients is to take the amount of vitamin D that brings their levels up to the middle of the normal range at about 40 to 60ng/ml, depending on your health care needs. Be proactive in your health care, but do it safely. X

Change is a process, not an event. —James Prochaska, Ph.D.

\

t is that time of year when cleaning out the closet, filing those papers, eating more healthily, exercising 30 minutes a day, or starting the day with gratitude becomes a reality. Or does it? It may remain in the "intention" stage for much longer than you think. Dr. James Prochaska, co-author of Changing For Good, tells us that up to 80% of people wanting to change are not ready to go into action. Uh oh, does that spell trouble for your New Year’s Resolutions? He and his colleagues have studied change for over 30 years and have developed a model of outlining stages of change. I think understanding them could help you assess where you can begin. Usually we know where we are by results. I believe it would be safe to say that if nothing is happening, you aren’t ready. If you think you might be ready to start a new behavior in the near future, in about six months, you are in Stage 1: Precontemplation (not ready). Here you may be preparing, learning about the pros and cons, checking out the effects of the change. Prochaska tells us that precontemplators usually underestimate the pros of changing and overestimate the cons. You need encouragement to become more aware of the benefits of this change. Hopefully this will not take all of 2011. Readiness is key to success. Stage 2: Contemplation (getting ready) is the time when the person intends to start the new behavior within the next six months. At this state, pros and cons are about equal. Ambivalence can stop you in this stage. You need help reducing the cons of changing your behavior. When taking action is within 30 days, the person is at Stage 3: Preparation (ready). This is the time for small steps that help you believe you

can make the healthy behavior part of your life. You might start telling people, ask for help, make a plan, think about how you would feel if you changed the behavior. As you seek and get support your confidence will grow and you will prepare fully for the task at hand. Now you are ready for Stage 4: Action! You have taken the steps you need to implement the change in your life. You are going to the gym each day, cooking better meals, writing in your gratitude log everyday or doing whatever behavior you chose regularly. At this point, strategy, rewards, staying with people who encourage you--are very necessary. Finally, once a change is made Stage 5: Maintenance, is necessary to develop the new habit. Avoiding stressful and tempting situations, being with other people who support you in your new habit and engaging in alternative activities to cope with stress will guarantee success in making change that becomes part of you. In teaching the Neurobehavioral Program designed by Dr. John Leonard, I have found that people can work through the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages more quickly by uncovering any resistance that may be stopping them. These may be unconscious beliefs, doubts or fears that hinder us in making positive changes. The practice they get by going through the training, listening to the CD everyday, practicing the behaviors and getting assistance from counseling enhances the five step process, making it easier, more effective and powerful. If you are struggling with those resolutions, check out Dr. Prohaska’s book. He also has a great website: www.prochange.com that offers online, offline and manuals for working through the stages of change. For a more personal approach with additional tools for quick and powerful change, try any of the Neurobehavioral Programs. Happy New Year’s resolutions and your journey of change. Don’t fear change, embrace it. (Anthony J.D’Angelo) X

ell, knock me over with a spoon! I lost several pounds during our certification program in restorative yoga in October. By relaxing and minimizing anxiety with PROPER, supported restorative yoga poses, my cortical levels reduced so much the flight or fight response minimized. Our bodies hold weight when under stress! So how do you lose weight by doing nothing? Resolve to practice restorative yoga along with your strength training and other movement such as walking. Resolve is our theme for our 2011 winter curriculum at The Yoga School of Therapeutics. We invite our stu-

dents, faculty, and volunteers to meditate more; practice and learn new skills in yoga; stay fit and eat a healthy diet; create more fun and be more social. Imagine 50 men and women stepping over one another’s yoga mats laid out among l00’s of cotton yoga blankets and l00’s of yoga bolsters with our digital cameras perched on top of yoga blocks! The sound of 50 voices in our 3000 sq. ft. space would often lift to a more-than-calm-pitch. The yoga teachers upstairs leading our public classes said they heard us “laughing through the ceiling.” It feels good to feel so good! Who does not have time to take 20 minutes to relax? You do! Here’s how: •

Find a certified yoga teacher, AND certified in restorative yoga. There are many “knock offs” saying it’s restorative yoga, but it’s not. Check it out. Invest in good yoga props. You’ll need six “Mexican” blankets

If you fall asleep don’t worry about it. It means you are tired. Keep a journal of the changes you feel. I’m betting you note that you are sleeping better, less cranky, have more energy and feel optimistic for no reason at all.

Over a year ago, the neurologists at Kansas University Medical’s Hoglund Brain Imaging Center scanned my brain as a base model for a study on yoga and its effects on the brain. I held still, only blinking now and then for 35 minutes with electrodes taped to my head and chest (not exactly comfortable). The doctors came running in at the end asking “How did you do that?” My BP, brain waves, heart beat, etc. became so slow and low while meditating it broke all records. “It’s 25 years of relaxation and meditation practice,” I said. This year: Do you have 20 minutes of calm and quiet to give to yourself? It’s an act of love. It reflects your high self-esteem. This in itself may be the most important focus for 2011. X

(inexpensive); two yoga blocks, a strap and two yoga bolsters. Invest in a silk eye bag or use a cotton cloth to block out light so the eyes are not simulated. This helps the frontal lobes of the brain to relax. Stage one of relaxing is physiological. It takes 20 minutes for most folks to reach this stage. You must be l00% comfortable and warm and supported. In this stage the blood pressure lowers, the EKG slows, and the brain releases the healing hormones and chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin, etc. The motto of the practice is Still, Quiet, Warm, Dark and Safe. Even if you think becoming still is not working for you the physiological benefits are impeccable and moving through your nervous system, brain and body. The second stage is what the yogis call “Pratyahara” or withdrawal of the senses. Bliss, bliss, bliss! When you reach this stage a loud noise may be outside the door but you do not feel that jerk or nerve response as your body is now in the parasympathetic mode. This means your nervous system is resonating peace and calm.

The Practice of Falun Dafa by Barbara Gay

This practice, which is a type of qigong, consists of five gentle, meditative exercises—very low impact and paradoxically relaxing and energizing at the same time.

Y

or the better part of my life, I’ve had the distinct feeling that I was waiting for something…each experience seemed to offer a “piece” to what I thought of as the “puzzle” of life. I felt that if I could just be patient long enough, I’d eventually have enough of pieces so that the “Truth” would be revealed to me. I began to have health problems before I graduated from college; I was eventually diagnosed with lupus and became disabled— totally and permanently. I spent the next decade at home, in pain most of the time and struggling to make sense of all of this. I struggled with depression—over the illness, as well as my inability to pursue a career—and was then diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and vasculitis, as well. I eventually came to realize that I could either spend the rest of my life being unhappy because of what I didn’t have, or I could find a way to accept the hand that I’d been dealt and count my blessings—no matter how few they might seem to be. With this thinking, I gradually began to see, more and more, how fortunate I was in many ways— even with my disability and the prognosis of a shortened life. I

started to see my many blessings, two of which were the people I lived with—my husband and my daughter: My husband had chosen to spend his life with an unhealthy person who was unable to share a lot of things that he deemed important. Our relationship provided a stability I had never known in my life; he was truly my best friend and we had a very good relationship throughout the hardest of times. My daughter enjoyed the security of my being there when she came home from school. She knew that she was able to depend on me to make that costume for the holiday program, bring cookies to the party, or attend many of her numerous activities and events. She wrote a story once about how I was her hero. Ironically, none of those things would have been possible if I had been pursuing a career. As time went on, and I became more and more at peace with my circumstances, I began to wonder if I’d ever find the rest of the puzzle pieces before I left this life. Although my attitude had become more positive, my physical health had continued to deteriorate. I then started noticing some unusual phenomena: I had an unusu-

ally vivid dream about Chinese people—hundreds of them surrounding me. I also began to regularly see three Chinese characters in my mind’s eye; And, although I had a strong desire to paint them, I could never quite see them clearly enough. One day, when I was feeling particularly hopeless about the future, I cried out to the universe to help me find the answers I was looking for. I immediately remembered reading that if you’re ever looking for something, go to the library. Even if it’s not there, they’ll be able to help you find it. Crazy at it may sound, I did indeed go to my library. I looked and looked. I checked each shelf and each flier in the foyer—and every piece of paper on the bulletin board. Not finding anything that seemed right, and coming close to tears, I finally reached down to the bottom shelf where a book was lying; I picked it up and underneath it was a bright blue flier with three Chinese characters on the front. I knew it was what I had come for. I began to learn the exercises of something called Falun Dafa (aka Falun Gong), and I also began to read the book, Zhuan Falun. I hadn’t begun this practice for the healing benefits; I didn’t even realize that that was a possibility. But, within three weeks, I had thrown away all my medication. I felt wonderful! And, along with my health being improved, the pieces of the puzzle gradually and naturally began falling into place. This practice, which is a type of qigong, consists of five gentle, meditative exercises—very low impact and paradoxically relaxing and energizing at the same time. There are four standing exercises and one sitting meditation; none of the standing exercises require any movement of the feet or balancing, and they can all be done at the convenience of the practitioner. The purpose of these exercises is to purify the body, and they can help a person attain a high level of physical health.

Although it is a unique feeling to do them in a large group, which I have experienced several times since starting this practice—being literally surrounded by hundreds of Chinese, just like in my dreams! —they can be practiced individually with the same results. The other aspect of the practice of Falun Dafa is the cultivation of “xinxing” or moral character. This is done by assimilation to the “cosmic characteristic” or “Zhen-Shan-Ren” (roughly translated as: to be True, Good, and Endure)—those same three Chinese characters I had seen! Conforming to these three principles is accomplished primarily through study of the book Zhuan Falun, which is a practical guide to applying the principles to everyday situations and circumstances. The books are all free to download from the internet, as well as the exercise video; if you’re interested in learning from others, the website can link you to virtually any country in the world’s contact information for the local Falun Dafa Association there. Since I began this practice, I have changed inside and out. My health is excellent and I see the world differently—reacting differently as well. I take material interests lightly and attach little significance to my own desires and pursuits. Consequently, my mind is at peace and I find a joy in living that I honestly believe I would not otherwise have known.

Barbara Gay has been practicing Falun Dafa since February of 2000. For more information on Falun Dafa, you can check the website at www.falundafa.org; for more information on learning, you can contact Barbara directly at barbaragay@embarqmail.com or call 816-806-4724.

Meditation in Motion:

T’ai Chi Chih T’ai Chi Chih can improve physical, mental and spiritual well-being

T

’ai Chi Chih is a series of 19 gentle movements and one pose dedicated to circulating and balancing the Vital Energy (Chi) that flows within us. This “Joy thru Movement” is easily accessible to anyone who wants the benefit of ancient “Qigong” mind/body disciplines. While it is meditative, it has no religious or cultural affiliation. Although physically beneficial, it is not considered exercise, and despite the fact that the movements are based upon martial arts forms, it is not a martial art. It was originated during the last century by Justin Stone, an artist and musician, as well as a scholar and teacher of Eastern disciplines. He is a long-time master of T’ai Chi Ch’uan, the ancient 1000-some-year old Chinese form of 108 movements. Observing that few of his students had the patience and time to memorize and master executing that long sequence, and knowing that without mastery, there was a limited benefit, Stone developed this simpler form that would yield the same benefits. He called it T’ai Chi Chih, meaning “knowledge of the supreme ultimate.” To teach T’ai Chi Chih requires accreditation, which involves at least two years of classes, recommendations by two accredited teachers, and then a full week of intensive training. Ongoing workshops, retreats and other training reviews and updates for teachers help assure that students will receive the highest quality of instruction. Along with this stringent certification process, a somewhat unique feature of T’ai Chi Chih is that wherever one goes throughout the world, the movements and their sequences are exactly the same!

A “moving meditation” is another descriptive title for T’ai Chi Chih, which involves increasing the flow of energy, or Chi, through the body, thereby connecting mind and body through gentle, calm movements. Imbalances in the flow of Chi are said to disrupt one’s blood pressure, mental clarity, metabolism and emotions. Some of the institutions that have endorsed T’ai Chi Chih as a positive and beneficial discipline include The Arthritis Foundation, The American Medical Association, and the Mayo Clinic. The December 2010 AARP magazine devotes a full page to describing T’ai Chi Chih, titled, “Get Fit-Without Breaking a Sweat.” A Johns Hopkins study has revealed that blood pressure is lowered almost as much with T’ai Chi Chih as with moderate-intensity aerobic exercise in once sedentary older adults. A UCLA study (Dr. Michael Irwin) documents an up to 50% increase in the immune system’s T-cells’ response to the virus that causes shingles. A study reviewed in the Archives of Internal Medicine of Tufts-New England Medical Center has found improved muscle strength and flexibility, as well as a reduced number of falls in T’ai Chi devotees. Several studies have shown how it lessens depression and stress, improves moods and confidence, and even strengthens grips in older people. T’ai Chi Chih is safe for everyone, regardless of age, weight or physical ability, and can be performed by student or teacher while sitting. It requires little space and no special clothing or equipment. Jan Block, accredited instructor, often refers to T’ai Chi Chih as “portable”--it can be practiced anywhere and anytime a practitioner has a few minutes. Just a few minutes brings benefits. Jan’s students range in age from early 40’s to late 80’s. She currently teaches an 84-year-old whose doctor rec-

ommended her class for the patient’s balance-related problems. After only one six-week session, the patient/ student no longer needs a chair for her comfort level. Another student reports that her blood pressure dropped to normal for the first time in years after a few classes. Other students with MS, Parkinson’s, vestibular diseases, and cancer, several of whom were referred by medical professionals, have found instant stress relief. Some written comments on surveys titled, “T’ai Chi Chih Benefits I have Received,” include “increased balance,” “ability to relax quite rapidly,” “much better strength in my legs and knees, which gives me more stability and balance in walking and stair climbing,” “greater joy and contentment,” and, “after class, I always feel happier, calmer and ready to finish my day more relaxed.”

Jan Block began practicing T’ai Chi Chih about ten years ago and has been teaching it the past seven years in various venues, primarily at the Leawood Community Center. As a two-time cancer survivor, with both hips totally replaced, she is considered an inspirational role model. Jan is dedicated to bringing the joy of T’ai Chi Chih to everyone she can reach and enjoys giving demonstrations and discussing it whenever there is an opportunity. Achieving Peak Performance Starts Today By Vaughn Lawrence

T

his article isn’t just for elite athletes; you too can achieve amazing physical strength, stamina and endurance— regardless of your age. There are peoplethroughout the world that are active well past the century mark, and you can do the same by understanding three basic principles. First, we must understand that an active lifestyle today is the only way to achieve a healthy tomorrow. Forget the past and get a second job. That job is exercise and you need to show up for work every day. Pick a time and make it a daily routine. What you do isn’t what is critical, doing is what is critical; walking, jogging, tennis, hiking, yoga, rebounding while watching TV, racquetball, weights, biking, etc. Second, for your body to perform, it needs proper nutrients. What you do or do not put in your mouth every day is the key! Water is the single most important thing you put in your body. Think of every mammal on the planet. What do they drink after mom’s milk? Water. Humans are the only exception and this puts us at a severe disadvantage. Chronic dehydration is rampant in this country and soda, energy drinks, coffee and milk are all part of the problem. Your body can not, and will not, perform without proper hydration to the tissues, muscles, glands and organs. Making proper food choices is the biggest problem in America today. This chemical laden, over processed, nutrient devoid stuff we call “food” sitting on supermarket shelves and at fast food joints is destroying the foundation of our culture, and our bodies. If this is what you choose to eat exclusively, don’t expect a highly active, pain free, disease free life into your hundreds. As a Naturopath, it makes me sad to see how many people are living in pain, debilitated by so many issues that are completely preventable. Many people will get away with this for a short period of time, but it always catches up to them. There is a reason America is one of the most diseased and crippled industrialized nations in the world. You have choices. For optimal performance the body needs enzyme rich fresh fruits and vegetables. It craves water, whole grains, and foods fresh from the garden. Grow your own garden, shop at the local farmer’s markets or buy organic produce. This food brings life and your body will thank you for it. The third and most confusing principle is proper supplementation. Supplementing is critical today because of the aforementioned destruction of our food supply and the honest fact that we are going to consume some of these processed foods from time to time. We will start with the basics and move up to more advanced options. Minerals are the foundation for everything that happens in your body. You can’t move a muscle, blink or lift anything without minerals. People are very focused on vitamins these days, which are important of course, but it’s time to shift our

Your body was created to move and to function perfectly. You have the choice to age quickly or to age gracefully. You are only as healthy as the decisions you make every day.

thoughts to the importance of minerals. Athletes drink electrolyte minerals for a reason. Please understand that you have options for great mineral supplements without the sugar, artificial flavors and colors in most commercial electrolyte drinks. Calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are all critical for optimal performance. Quality minerals come from natural food sources—don’t fall for cheap synthetic versions in most stores. A short list of nutrient dense, high mineral foods include marine phytoplankton, chlorella, spirulina, sea vegetables (kelp, dulse, nori, wakame), royal jelly, bee pollen, sea salt, himalayan pink salt, herbs (nettle, ginkgo, horsetail, maca, goji berries, ashwagandha and shilajit), raw cacao and aloe vera. When it comes to minerals and bone health, you may be surprised to learn that consuming calcium should not be your focus. Silica, magnesium and potassium are all more important for building strong bones. Silica is the building block for bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and other tissues. The reason America has poor bone health is from poor diet and acidic foods like dairy and soda, not from a calcium deficiency. This acidity causes your body to leach calcium from your bones to keep you alive.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

14

After building a mineral foundation in your body, the next focus should be on anti-oxidants. There has been a lot of buzz regarding the importance of this class of nutrients, and rightfully so. Oxidative stress is a natural byproduct of physical activity and this can be offset with the right foods and supplements. Slowing the oxidative process is how we slow aging, wrinkles and the breakdown of glands and organs. Your richest source of these invaluable nutrients is found in medicinal mushrooms (reishi, chaga, cordyceps), astaxanthin found in red algae, chlorella, spirulina, sour red grapes, good fats (coconut, flax, sunflower, sesame, evening primrose, avocado) and quality vitamin C sources (NOT ascorbic acid) like camu camu, amla, goji berries and acerola cherries. In addition, there is a product on the market, using only minerals, that makes anti-oxidants work 500% more efficiently, a perfect addition to your new program. A wide variety of quality fruits and vegetables is critical to having adequate antioxidant levels in the body as well. The final level of achieving peak performance is the understanding and use of adaptogenic tonic herbs. When the Russians were dominating the Olympics, they were taking herbs, not steroids. This gave them a unique, and legal, advantage over the competition. These herbs have been consumed as foods in cultures around the world for centuries and are a key to longevity and graceful aging. A short list of these herbs include ashwagandha, astragalus, rhodiola, fo-ti, schisandra, reishi, cordyceps, shilajit and jiao gu lan. Working with an experienced herbalist can help you find the right combination suitable to your goals. Your body was created to move and to function perfectly. You have the choice to age quickly or to age gracefully. You are only as healthy as the decisions you make every day.

NATURAL BREAST CANCER TREATMENT OPTIONS

SAVING BREASTS, SAVING LIVES By Marla Manhart

C

ora Wallace was 37 when she discovered a lump in her right breast. She was newly divorced, raising two children, and was scared to death. Before she called her doctor, Wallace started researching breast cancer options on the internet. According to TMD Limited, a medical tourism company, over half of the 750,000 Americans who travel overseas for medical treatment find clinics through the web. “I didn’t tell anyone,” Wallace said. “I wanted to do my own research and form my own opinions on the best course of treatment before my doctor and my family pushed me into treatment they thought was best. I had two friends who went through mastectomies, and I watched them go through chemotherapy. I did not want to follow in those footsteps if there was another option.” Breast lumps that are soft, smooth, round and movable are likely benign. A hard, oddly shaped lump that feels firmly attached is usually cancer. By the time Wallace found her lump, it had probably been there for several years. The most common cancer in women, breast cancer forms in the lining of the milk ducts, called ductal carcinoma, or in the lobes in the breast, called lobular carcinoma. It can also produce lumps in the armpit and lymph nodes around the breast. Some types of breast cancer are more aggressive than others. According to the CDC, 101,410 women in the US were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, and 40,820 women died of breast cancer. Breast cancer typically spreads to the bone, liver, lung and brain. Risk factors include age, lack of childbearing or breastfeeding, obesity, lack of exercise, high hormone levels and alcohol consumption. Women are taught early to do self exams, and to have breast exams along with their annual pap smears. Although the American Cancer Society recommends mammogram screening for women age 50 or earlier if there are risk factors, Wallace read that radiation from mammograms can actually cause breast cancer. The pressure from squeezing the breast during a mammogram can also spread cancer cells. One study in Sweden followed 60,000 women, and found that 70% of mammogram readings that found tumors were false positive, confirmed by biopsy, leading to unnecessary stress and invasive biopsies. Standard testing for breast cancer included mam-

The most common cancer in women, breast cancer forms in the lining of the milk ducts, called ductal carcinoma, or in the lobes in the breast, called lobular carcinoma. It can also produce lumps in the armpit and lymph nodes around the breast. mograms, ultrasounds, MRI and biopsy. Breast cancer is commonly treated with surgery to remove the lump or to remove the breast and surrounding lymph nodes. This surgery and radiation treatments can cause lymphedema, or a build-up of lymph fluid in fatty tissues just under the skin. Women who suffer with lymphedema may lose the mobility of their arm, experience pain, itching and thickening of the skin, insomnia, hair loss and irritability. Chemotherapy causes vomiting, hair loss, nausea and extreme fatigue. Radiation of the chest can cause heart damage and severe heart disease may follow. If the cancer growth is spurred by hormones, then hormone blocking drugs are added to the treatment program. Tamoxifin and Herceptin are two such drugs. Given this information, Wallace was reluctant to seek conventional treatment. Her internet search led her to a small private clinic in Baja, Mexico that offered non-invasive, painless treatments that had no side effects. Searching chat rooms and patient support groups, she was able to talk with other breast cancer patients that had been successfully treated at Hope4Cancer Institute. Once she was satisfied that this was a legitimate clinic, she spoke with the medical director, Dr. Antonio Jimenez. Through Dr. Jimenez and his Hope4Cancer Institute, she found a side of medicine that she hadn’t known existed. According to Jimenez, he fights breast cancer with an aggressive natural approach. He combines SonoPhoto Dynamic Therapy, local and whole body hyperthermia, detoxification, immunotherapy, nutrition, enzymes and IV therapy. “We address all aspects of the cancer – spiritual, emotional, physi-

cal,” Jimenez said. “We address the cause of the cancer, and help the immune system fight the disease. We have been very successful in getting rid of tumors and restoring patients back to health.” Sound wave hyperthermia has been used in Europe for three decades, although this type of hyperthermia has not been approved in the USA. Hyperthermia uses specific sound wave frequencies to heat cancer cells and destroy them. These frequencies do not affect normal cells, so there are no side effects. Treatments are painless and noninvasive. To eliminate detox symptoms which occur when cancer cells die off quickly, Hope4Cancer Institute uses Infrared light therapy, infrared saunas, massage therapy, organic coffee enemas and IV therapy to rid the body of dead cells. Founded in 1999, Hope4Cancer employs six medical doctors with varying specialties, and treats about 200 patients a year. Jimenez is an oncology researcher, and travels worldwide exploring treatment modalities, incorporating promising treatments into his protocols. “I was apprehensive about trying something so new to me,” Wallace explained, “but I knew I did not want to lose my breast, and I did not want to be sidelined by chemo side effects. I needed to work, and to be there for my kids. I spent two weeks at the clinic, and was able to continue my program at home and still work.” “I discovered that cancer mutates, just like the flu mutates,” Wallace said. “In the US, cancer treatments are pretty much the same today as they were 25 years ago. We make new flu vaccines every year, but we don’t change our approach to cancer. What I liked about Hope4Cancer Institute is that they are always keeping up with the disease, tailoring their treatments to the individual. And they do not use any chemotherapy. I learned a lot about cancer prevention and nutrition while I was there, and I saved my breast. That was important to me. I was never sick during the treatment. And I made some great friends – who ever says that about a hospital stay in the US? It’s been 7 years since my diagnosis; I get thermography and blood work done every year, and I continue to be cancer free. I am so grateful to be healthy.” Marla Manhart is a health writer affiliated with TMD Limited, and a patient advocate. She can be reached at marlamanhart@hotmail.com

want to run away from something that’s starting to bore you because it’s actually touching on deep stuff. Stay put emotionally and intellectually and let yourself be transformed and healed from within! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) As you meditate and get serious about spiritual growth, you’ll have challenging emotions come up. Please don’t judge yourself. This is a sign that deep subconscious and karmic memories are healing. Accept the “non-spiritual” thoughts and see them flowing out of you. This will allow you to have much better relationships with others. Once you move past this phase, you’ll be flooded with positive feelings and experiences, so don’t give up! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You could have many “a ha!” moments that reveal subconscious patterns that block you from joy in relationships. Forgive yourself and others involved as soon as you can. The Universe wants you to draw these patterns to a close, so don’t hang on to negativity. Investigate new avenues of spiritual growth that you feel drawn to. Don’t convince others to join you or accept what you’re doing. They’ll see the truth as you get results from your new spiritual concepts. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You’ll have a wonderful relationship month! If single, you can meet an extremely compatible person. Your heart is so open and trusting. Just be sure to work with meditation so you can continue to forgive yourself for your flaws–and can shine light on yourself too! If partnered, you’ll feel extra close and can even come into a surprising amount of money together! Enjoy yourself and don’t feel guilty about your good fortune! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) The Universe is fulfilling your desires for happier relationships. But you’ve got to do the work of continuing to feel beautiful inside. It’s too easy to feel worthwhile because of positive outer circumstances. Meditate on your inner beauty and natural goodness. Even if someone isn’t reflecting it back to you at the moment, it doesn’t mean you’re suddenly undesirable. Be wary of setting stringent goals about diet and exercise. Be healthy, but not mean to yourself! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Use your meditation time to forgive difficult childhood issues. Ask your soul to show you the root of present day problems. (Clues can show up in dreams.) If you are able to forgive yourself and others, your current relationships will undergo an incredible healing. You’ll be fully present and won’t be reacting from subconscious past triggers. Also, if you’ve been looking for a new job, you could have more than one offer this month! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) You could be starting a new relationship based on exciting spiritual ideas. If partnered, you could meet new friends through a spiritual activity. You are easy-going and fun, but you’re getting bored of surrounding yourself with “just anyone”. People who are dedicated to their growth spur you on to “walk your talk”. You’ll feel much more satisfied with your connections when they are meaningful!
