Dear Friend, When I was a teenager there was a bar that sponsored a teen night. I went to these functions religiously. My friends and I would dance and laugh a lot, but what mostly drew me there was the sense of belonging I felt. Each week I received greetings from everywhere around the room. I knew these people, they knew me, and I felt welcome.
As adults, we have less opportunity to feel this incredible sense of belonging; yet, we continually seek it out. We yearn for this connection and search for it at our churches, through bowling and pool leagues, support groups and our most intimate relationships.
Make a Difference in Your Community...13 Getting to the Heart of It...14
We humans have this "aloneness". I believe part of the sadness of this human aloneness is that we don't (always) have someone to share our deepest faults/fears with. My point is that I feel the key to having a community, and alleviating that sense of isolation or separateness is to create a haven where people are safe to share their humanness.
The Art of Volunteering...9
Henri Nouwen said, "Although we need solitude to know God, we require a faithful community to hold us accountable." I believe one way to find this sense of community is through volunteering. In the process of helping others, we ultimately help ourselves, while making a true connection. Volunteering isn’t just altruistic; it creates a higher sense of Self.
Altruism...15
The first time I volunteered at a food kitchen was scary. And it can be scary and painful, because we are forced to look our vulnerability in the face. But it is also cathartic. And through volunteering and helping another, we create a connection and can, at least for a brief moment, end our own aloneness.

As part of the National Wildlife Federation’s “Be Out There” movement, the Great American Backyard Campout encourages people to get outside and connect with the natural world. It is especially important for kids; because, for the first time in our country’s history, we have an entire generation that is growing up disconnected from nature. Spending time outdoors, like Campout, makes kids happier and healthier. The National Wildlife Federation provides every-
thing you need to head out into the great outdoors. The Campout website has packing lists, recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, exploration activities, nature games, fundraising prizes, directory of Campouts by state to search for large groups to join, and more. Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes Serve with Love True community service is filled with kindness, filled with love.
“
I am too lazy to get enlightened,” Brian Andreas says to his wife in his book Hearing Voices. She raises an eyebrow. “I like restaurants too much,” he explains. “What does that have to do with anything? she asks. “I’m not sure,” he says, “But any excuse is GOOD when change is involved!” Community service is a good thing. Starting in my 20’s I served on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters; as a volunteer for American Heart Association; Board Member of Shepherd’s Center KC (they support successful aging); a volunteer to the Girl Scouts of America; Board Member with The Alzheimer’s Association when Ma was losing her mind; and I last volunteered to pioneer the first Yoga Community in Westport. Now I wonder “Was this service fun?” Mmmmmm….not always. Andreas writes in the same book: “My mother always told me to finish what I started but she had no idea of the people I’d be dealing with.” (storypeople.com) We had the worker bees on these boards and we had the Queens and Kings who did little but publish their name on the organization letterhead. I was a worker bee. So I quit external volunteer service and went internal. What do I mean by that? A good number of you reading this column are held in loving energy and prayers…just ask. Andreas writes in Traveling Light: “In those days we finally chose to walk like giants and hold the world with arms grown strong with love. We forget many things but this will not be one of them.” As I lightened my volunteer to-do list, I found a new perspective. Andreas drew a cartoon of a man holding a big box over his head with the label: A Box Filled With Things Everyone Thinks You Should Have Done. Then the call out, “THIS ONLY WEIGHS A LOT IF YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN TO DO THE STUFF YOU WANTED TO DO ALL ALONG.” My inventory before committing to community service:
1. Can I give with love? 2. Am I keeping a score card? (I did/ gave more than you…blah, blah,) 3. Am I giving from a full cup? 4. Am I depleting if it feels like obligation and duty? 5. Is this service rewarding and fun? Looking back my first impression of community service began with my father’s role to help re-model the church called Holy Rosary in Wea, Ks near Louisburg. Then he designed the nun’s convent, so beautiful. It gave back. This community helped heal our broken hearts when my sis committed suicide. I write this not as drama but as fact. The church then said those who take their own hand are committed to eternal darkness or something creepy like that. When this tragedy happened I thought no one would support us. Not so! From the moment of the news that hot Sunday in August, the neighbors arrived at our front door. We froze dozens of casseroles (too many to eat and 100’s were eating); dozens of hams; and cakes, cookies, and pies to feed an army. I remember being so hot with my belly 9 months pregnant and no A/C in the farmhouse. My sis made sure I ate, dishing out cool salads and cold summer green beans, made the way farmer’s wives know. At the wake many did not get through the reception line as it flowed out to the street a block long. I felt their caring. I felt their empathy. This is true community service. It is filled with kindness, filled with love. Suzette Scholtes has won awards for her writing including the prestige “Writers Digest” award for non-fiction. Her passion is writing and teaching. Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. How Powerful is Your Life? The sacredness of land is first and foremost an emotional experience. It is that feeling of unity with a place that is complete, whatever feelings it may engender in an individual. —Vine Deloria, Jr. Reflection and Revelation: Knowing Land, Places and Ourselves

How powerful is ‘place’ in your life? Where were you when you had a peak experience? Studies have shown that nature is the most common trigger for these kinds of experiences. For example: 82 percent of the general population have “experienced the beauty of nature in a deeply moving way,” 45 percent said the “beauties of nature” led to an “intense spiritual experience.” When asked to describe their peak experiences, 78 percent of city college students said outdoors or made references to natural settings. Richard Louv, author of Last Child In The Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder, has published his second edition containing more research documenting that direct exposure to nature is essential to healthy child development and the physical and emotional health of children and adults. He has added 100 actions you can take, 35 discussion points and a report on the “Leave No Child Inside” movement. Another national and local movement is the development of community gardens and school gardens. A good friend of mine is responsible for working with students in special projects after school. She is working with students to plant and maintain a garden, learning about healthy eating as they harvest the produce. There are several new books about implementing nature-friendly practices in school; No Child Left Indoors: Creating a Field Guide to your Schoolyard by Jane Kirkland, and How To Grow A School Garden: Complete Guide for Parents and Teachers by Andrea BucklinSpore and Rachel Kathleen Pringle. With education in so much chaos, the garden and outdoor experiences may be the key to help our children grow in many ways. School gardens have been shown to: • Enhance academic achievement • Promote healthy lifestyle • Instill an environmental stewardship ethic • Encourage social development • Instill a sense of place.

This movement can certainly help combat the rise in obesity, attention disorders and depression. Research has shown that people recover from surgery and other illnesses sooner if there is a view of trees. Children with ADD, ADHD experience symptom relief after contact with nature. Visual exposure to settings with trees produced significant recovery from stress in five minutes, evidenced by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension. The first thing I teach both children and adults in the self-calming process is to imagine that they are a tree with roots reaching deep down into the earth, feeling their body getting heavier and warmer. People most often experience an immediate sense of relaxation, calmness and sense of well being. The second step is to find a ‘safe place’ using guided imagery. Very often people go to a place of nature. In this safe place one can feel the sense of calmness and relaxation to think clearly and make good decisions. One of my favorite stories is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. A young girl, Mary, experiencing grief and loss, discovers a garden hidden away on her uncle’s estate. As she brings the garden back to life with the gardener's son and, eventually, her cousin, Colin, all three of the children change and heal their lives. They also help Colin’s father, her uncle, to heal as well. At the end of the Secret Garden film, Mary says, “The spell was broken. My uncle learned to laugh and I learned to cry. The secret garden is always open now…open and awake and alive. If you look the right way, you can see the whole world is a garden.” I hope you find your connection to nature, your secret garden and a spring path to healing. Revelations—by Julia Smith The Art of Volunteering: Cultivate Spirit and Vocation
I
n my mid-40’s, I left the workforce to volunteer against the advice of every professional in my life: the divorce attorney, the accountant and, especially, the career counselor. Here I was at mid-life with two dependent children and forced to re-imagine my dreams. Christiane Northrup, M.D. says if you aren’t living your values or fulfilling your dreams, your mid-life crisis can hit you harder. Mine was a wallop. I believe in the long view; that over the course of my life, I will have many careers. Each job, however unrelated, is another seed in cultivating a career. Aristotle says, “Where the needs of the world and your talents cross, there lies your vocation.” With that in mind, I reached out to volunteer at the KC Fringe Festival, a non-profit multi-disciplined art festival with a
mission to present uncensored art and performances. I started writing press releases and managing their public relations and moved into fundraising and helped launch their Experimental Music Festival. Each job I took on at the KC Fringe was related to a job I’d had in my past and gave me the opportunity to improve those skills. In his new book, How To Find Fulfilling Work, philosopher and author Roman Krznaric writes, “We have entered a new age of fulfillment, in which the great dream is to trade up from money to meaning.” As a 100 percent volunteer run organization, the KC Fringe is a truly collaborative environment where people who volunteer or perform are engaged by meaning, not money. In choosing the KC Fringe, I found an organization that was in alignment with my own
values, a creative work environment and the freedom to be a 'wide achiever.' After running a business for many years, I was used to being involved in all aspects of the company. Under KC Fringe Executive Director Cheryl Kimmi’s leadership, I was empowered and trusted to contribute and in turn, my creativity and motivation were sparked. The other day my mobile veterinarian came to my home to neuter my dog. After the surgery we sat on the floor holding the dog and talking. His face lit up and his features were animated as he told me he tells stories and plays music but has never performed in public until now. This summer he’s putting on a show for the KC Fringe and involving many artists who are his clients. My vet’s courage to express his creativity inspires me to express mine. To me, the

Diet for a New America
D
iet for a New America was instrumental in spearheading the cause and as the resulting movement continues to gain momentum, the book’s message is more timely and important than ever. As Robbins writes in the new epilogue to this 25th Anniversary edition, “There has been a tremendous number of important developments since Diet for a New America was first published in 1987. Some of what has happened and continues to happen is bright and promising. But it is in the nature of our times that some of what is taking place, unfortunately, is much darker and more foreboding.” Diet for a New America reveals the causal links between our food habits and the current epidemics of cancer, heart disease, and other modern health disorders. It also reveals the role these habits play in our world’s current ecological crisis. In Section I, Robbins takes an extraordinary look at our dependence on animals for food and the inhumane conditions under which these animals are raised. Section II challenges the belief that consuming meat is a requirement for health by pointing out the vastly increased rate of disease caused by pesticides, hormones, additives, and other chemicals now a routine part of our food production. Finally, in Section III, Robbins looks at the global implications of a meat-based diet and concludes that the consumption of the resources necessary to produce meat is a major factor in our ecological crisis. Ocean Robbins is founder and co-host (with best-selling author John Robbins) of the 75,000 member Food Revolution Network, an initiative to help you heal your body, and your world... with food. eople are just now waking up to the harms of soda. Like cigarettes, soda is promoted as a hip, energizing refreshment that everyone deserves. Instead it delivers a sugar-rush then an energy crash that leads to craving yet another soda. Diet or regular the cycle is the same. For some, that energy crash is also a mood crash-depression or anxiety. Here’s a 60 minute timeline of what happens in your body every time you drink a can of soda: 10 minutes: 100 percent of your recommended daily intake of sugar enters your system. 20 minutes: Insulin goes into overdrive as your blood sugar spikes. We don’t understand exactly why this happens with diet soda, but it does. The liver transforms all the sugar that it can into fat. 40-45 minutes: Caffeine is fully absorbed causing dilated pupils, risen blood pressure, and full alertness as adenosine receptors in the brain are blocked to prevent drowsiness. Pleasure centers in the brain are stimulated by the dopamine your body is now producing. This is exactly how heroin works on your body. 60 minutes: CRASH! As your body tries to resume normal function, irritability and sluggishness sets in. Also, time for a potty break! You will soon be flushing out all of the water, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and electrolytes which came with the soda, plus more of your body's mineral reserves along with it. One more thing to look forward to: a caffeine crash in just a few hours. That’s the short term scenario. Here’s the long term scenario triggered by drinking just one can of soda daily, and drinking diet soda doesn’t exempt you! An ever-expanding waistline: Diet or regular, both types of soda have been linked to obesity. Soda increases your appetite, causing cravings which lead to overeating.

Dentist bills: Expect an increase in cavities and tooth decay. The combination of sugar a n d acid attack tooth enamel. Heart disease: The American Heart Association has published a study stating that women who drink soda daily have a 40 percent higher risk of heart attacks or death from heart disease t h a n those who rarely drink soda. Osteoporosis: Soda leaches calcium from the bones which lowers bone density and increases the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Diabetes: Excessive sugar and calories lead to weight gain and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. A Nurse’s Health Study found that women drinking one or more servings daily of sugary drinks or soft drinks were twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Soda like cigarettes deserves a surgeon general’s warning label. Water remains the healthiest drink for your body. For a pick-me-up, enjoy it hot with fresh lemon and optional raw honey or stevia. H
ow many times have you thought about getting more involved in your community, only to think “Gosh, I just don’t have the time!”? What is it about community service that has us automatically thinking of free labor and hard work? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to think of making a difference in your community and to be filled with energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment? We are often most exhausted after a day of meeting obligations, forcing discipline on an exhausted heart and extending ourselves through our skills rather than our gifts. When we honor our authentic self and reach out through our Spirit, we are filled with the warmth and gratification of achieving our purpose and connecting with others in a truly intimate way. Unfortunately, most of us don’t take this path. Joseph was a 43-year-old CEO of a Hospital Consulting firm in St. Louis, very successful and very unsatisfied. He came to me in desperate need of change. He was what I call “a creative in a sterile world.” I could see immediately that he was a genuine man who was lost when it came to feeding his authentic Self. “Sonia, I want to feel like I’m making a difference. I know my job helps people; but I don’t feel like I’m a positive influence in my community. I feel absent and I don’t know what to do about it.” “Joseph,” I said, “Your life is empty because you’re not fulfilling your purpose. You’re getting the job done at work but not in your life; and it’s draining you." So, tell me this: "What do you love?" “Well,” he said, thinking for a moment. “I’m good at organizing but I really love gardening.” “Perfect! Let’s combine them with some simple goals. Why don’t we start with finding out if there are any community garden projects in your area? If not, you might enjoy organiz-
request being made and you will be able to create one-on-one intimate relationships in any setting. 3) Pay attention to, and honor, your gifts. If you know your gifts and strengths of Spirit, you can match your abilities with the needs of your community in a personalized and individualized way. Rather than community involvement becoming another thing on your “to do” list, it will become something you crave and look forward to for recharging and revitalizing your authentic Self.
ing one.” Joseph did his research and found that there was a need for a community garden. He organized the project and fed his spirit by spending some of his free time in an environment that nurtured his authentic purpose. Can you relate to that sense of absence or emptiness that Joseph felt? Here are three things we can do to make an impact in our communities in a way that creates a feast rather than a famine for our Spirit 1) Enter your community with an open heart and be present with your authentic Spirit. Your community will welcome your positive energy and seek you out because of your dominant vibration. Just like two swinging pendulums, you and your community will begin to vibrate on the same frequency when you allow your authentic Spirit to emerge. 2) Listen with your intuition. More often than not, what is said out loud is not the deepest message intended to be delivered. There is a difference between content and intent. You are of the most service to yourself and others if you take the time to get to the heart of the matter-- what people mean to say rather than what they actually say. Try this Exercise: Each morning, take a few minutes to identify and speak out loud, 10 things you love. When you’re ready, choose one of those things and gift it to yourself once per day. You can start small with baby-steps like one cup of tea each day and eventually build it up to involving yourself with plants through watering your own, gardening or participating in a community garden like Joseph. Start today and feel the immediate benefit.

aney always wanted to be a beekeeper; she had held a fascination for bees since she was a young girl. Her folks always told Janey to be practical, to keep her mind focused on having a “real job,” one that paid the bills, provided for a family and allowed her to “be someone” in her community. But deep down Janey always knew that she wanted to learn more about honeybees, and to devote her life to the study of bees. Janey went to college, got her degree in accounting, and went on to become the accountant at her father’s hardware store. Way down inside, however, she had this feeling… that there was something else she needed and wanted to be doing. Every time she thought about the bees, she heard her parents’ voices, telling her to be practical, to be logical. So she squelched the thoughts and pushed down her own desires. One Saturday morning while visiting the farmer’s market, Janey stopped at a table displaying bottles of golden honey, bee pollen and pamphlets about bee keeping. Janey could feel her pulse quicken, her mood lighten, and a deep knowing inside of her caused Janey to ask about the bees. Sure enough, the beekeeper had an opportunity for her; she was looking for someone to apprentice with her, to help her with the hives. And Janey just smiled — but deep in her heart she was singing!
will not be disappointed. We might think that we are just giving of ourselves; but in truth, we are always receiving just as much as we are giving.
Don’t you just love the sayings, “Grow where you are planted,” and “Make fun as you go, life is an adventure”. Finding out that you, and only you, are responsible for how your life turns out is a sobering fact for some; for others it sets their soul free. Half our life seems to be spent determining what it is that we are “supposed” to be doing, and with whom are we “supposed” to be doing it. If there were an instruction booklet with life, I’d put on page one:
DO WHAT MAKES YOUR HEART SING And from there the rest of the challenges would fall into place, the wondering would cease and the whoms that we are supposed to share our adventures with would show up. From deep within us there come desires, longings and wonderings. And they persist, calling out to us, driving us forward and sometimes making us crazy. They get our attention, keep us awake
at night and don’t let up until we finally pay attention. These are the things that will make our hearts happy, if we let ourselves go there. And for sure, we think, “I could never accomplish that,” or “Let someone more talented do it,” or “I don’t have the skills or the money to make a change this late in life;” and, many more reasons come up that we allow to stop us cold in our tracks. Yet, the inner guidance system pushes on, prodding us and pulling us into unknown territory. One of the best ways to safely test the waters and learn as you go is by volunteering your time and talents within your community. If there is a topic that’s new to you that calls to you, volunteer with others who know more about the subject. Spend time with those gardeners who can teach you to prune a tree; and, you can help them pull their weeds. Volunteer your services in areas that are completely new but intriguing. Learn, listen and have fun while sharing your gifts--you

Another way to move into unchartered territory is by volunteering to teach a class in a subject that is new to you. There is no better way to learn about it than to research the subject yourself. Perhaps the first time you teach the topic you’ll get a few students; but, by the time you teach the newly improved version of class number 10, you will have so much more experience and even a dozen or more students. By the time this life long journey is complete, you’ll be able to say to yourself, “I saw the mountain, I climbed the mountain and I totally experienced all that mountain had to offer.” Perhaps you’ll even make a few new friends along the way.

e can make an immeasurable difference in our community and the whole world simply by our attitude toward ourselves and each other. This is a statement about my spiritual understanding that we live our lives from the inside out. It has been my understanding my whole life. It has served me very well. There is nothing more important to me than making a positive difference. I know that every moment is a life changer for someone somewhere, individually and collectively, because Energy is instantly transmitted everywhere. This is a scientific knowing that is becoming more and more a part of our everyday awareness; and, I’m thrilled because it’s very important and very powerful. I absolutely love Henry David Thoreau’s quote: “If you will advance confidently in the direction of your dreams and endeavor to live the life you have imagined you will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” I live by this quote even though at times I feel like I’m going at a tortoise pace. Then there are the huge surprises of Generosity and Benevolence I experience in the most uncommon hour and way. I know this is because my attitude is so consistently hopeful and grateful. This is a Spiritual Law that works for everyone everywhere the very same way. What we give we receive. My favorite spiritual quality is Faith. The underlying principle of Faith is confidence. The Latin root word for confidence is “con fide”, meaning with Faith. How we see ourselves makes a huge difference in the kind of impact we make in our community and in our world. I see all of us as Spirit Incarnate. This is the Unitive Principle, that matter and Spirit are one and the same, simply two different expressions of the same thing--Energy. It is the principle expressed as: as above so below…as within so without. It means we are sacred. We are holy. We are not divided against ourselves. We can understand that we
are exponentially loved by a Benevolent Universe that many call God. I realize that not everyone has this understanding; I believe that is why there is so much fear, violence, anger and unhappiness in the world. My life has been dedicated to personal empowerment and spiritual community leadership development. That is one of the many ways I can make a positive difference in the world. I teach. I do women’s retreats. I do volunteer work. I recycle. I recognize that every action, every word makes a difference. I care about the difference I’m making in someone’s life. I want to teach others that they make an enormous difference in the world. I want to teach others that they are inherently worthy. I know many people grow up in environments where they’ve never heard that they are worthy, that they are wonderful and that they are talented. I want to change all that and I know I can. I know you can too and I want you to know that. That’s how we change the world for the better each and every moment, each and every day. I would like to share with you some of the most unforgettable moments in my life so you can see how some of the simplest acts of kindness have such a far-reaching impact. Several years ago, I was exiting a local shopping center. It was a beautiful day. I saw a small woman walking toward me who looked as though she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. I smilingly held the door open for her. In a barely audible whisper she said, “Thank you.” I said, “My pleasure.” She whirled around and stood in front of me again staring at me. It seemed like she was trying to take in the thought of “Who in the world are you that you would acknowledge me?” I knew in that moment that she had decided not to kill herself; that someone did indeed see her and care about her. I will never forget that moment. Another more recent moment was my interaction with a homeless person as I was stopped at a red light. I had had a miserable day at work. I was overcome by seeing this EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

person on the street. I spontaneously reached into my pocket and gave him all the money I had. I didn’t even look at how much I gave him. I just looked at him and smiled. I will never forget the look on his face as he teared up and nodded. I was crying too. I knew he knew I wasn’t judging him and that he really needed the money. I looked in the rearview mirror as the person behind me gave him money too. I couldn’t help but think that, in part, it was because of what I had done. Then I was crying even harder because it meant so much to me to do something for someone and to see how it multiplies. I have been on the other side of that equation too. There have been so many times I have needed help and I’ve asked for it and received so much more than what I’ve asked for in the moment. This is an invaluable lesson in service. We’ve been so trained to be so invulnerable and invisible that we don’t allow ourselves to be in the flow of receiving. This is how we break that chain of closing in on ourselves and become a service to the world by allowing others to give to us. It is an unforgettable example of allowing ourselves to experience how exponentially loved we are. We are all one. Namaste! Peace to you!!!

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels June 2013 Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Happy birthday Gemini! Mars, the planet of energy, excitement and enthusiasm, is in your sign. This is a two year cycle of fresh plans for self-improvement and also for walking your talk! Before you act, meditate and journal about new goals. This way you’ll use the energy wisely in well-thought-out directions. You can make job changes – improve communication in relationships – and heal internal “self-talk” to be kind and supportive! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) New energy and incredible opportunities are on the horizon! But now’s the time to prepare for that good stuff. This means meditating and forgiving stinky stuff that’s gone on the past two years. Trust that the Universe has a plan, even when things aren’t going your way. Stick with daily meditation, yoga or some type of spiritual connection. The more you let go of what’s in your head now, the more room for joy and fulfillment next month! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) This month put your meditation focus on issues of mistrust and betrayal. The Universe wants you to heal old wounds related to emotional, romantic or financial disappointments. Release those memories and subsequent belief systems so you can attract positive people and circumstances, as well as abundant prosperity! Also, pay close attention to your dreams for guidance and inspiration. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Neptune turns retrograde this month, so beware of confused thinking about relationships. Meditate before making big changes or grand statements. Neptune can make you not see things clearly (either overly good or overly bad), usually because the relationship is karmic. You’re feeling emotions from various dimensions of your conscious and subconscious mind which can be weird. But it’s time to have insights into patterns and issues. Don’t act
yet – just meditate, write, and ponder until late July! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) You’ll have a major sense of your spiritual fire being re-ignited. Try new forms of yoga, meditation or other ways to connect with your soul. Also be kind to your body with food choices. Earnestly try to eliminate foods you’re allergic or addicted to. Why keep hurting yourself? It’s your spiritual step to be as kind to yourself as you are toward others! Write about comfort you get from certain foods, and meditate to seek that same comfort from spiritual sources. Let family support you since they might be having the same issues! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Relationships are deepening. That could mean romantic partnerships, connections with kids, more intense work collaborations – or improvements in your relationship with your soul. As a Scorpio, lack of trust and fear of betrayal always underlie your hesitation to be more intimate on any level. Write and meditate about your fears. Set worry aside and enjoy the new avenues of connection the Universe is providing! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Resist the temptation to ignore work duties so you have more time for romantic relationships. Sure, an exciting bond is beginning, or you’re having extra fun with a long-time partner – but if you’re sloppy with work now, you’ll have lots of head-
aches late next month after Mercury goes direct. Set up a schedule to get job priorities out of the way, and have a trusted co-worker check for errors – then go have fun! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Practice being compassionate toward yourself. Meditate on absorbing the love from family, friends – even pets. If they love you, then you’re loveable! Treat yourself as kindly and gently as they treat you. Observe your thoughts and stop any negative self-talk! Like Libras, watch the choices you make around food and health. Be kind to your body too! As unconditional love penetrates your mind, intuition expands and you’ll feel more guided and safe. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You could be starting a new relationship – or a current one is being rejuvenated! Meditate on improving self-worth so you can take in more of this love and joy. Focus on affirmations about your appearance and personality. It might seem goofy, but it will work to heal your subconscious that tries to sabotage you! Also, release obsessive worries about how you could mess things up or that good times don’t last! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Neptune, your ruling planet, turns retrograde this month. It’s a testing time of balancing assertiveness with your natural co-dependency. Compassion is wonderful; but too much selflessness causes repressed anger

that eventually makes you explode! Meditate each day and believe you can have strong boundaries and clear opinions without being mean or dominating. Journal about childhood situations at the root of these patterns. Ask your spouse or a good friend to help you on this new path. Aries (March 21 – April 19) Even though you’re energetic, Aries, maybe even restless and slightly anxious, it’s important to find a way to meditate that works for you. Try a mantra to keep your mind in motion. Or try a moving meditation like Zen walking, yoga or Tai chi. These next few months will increase your intuition if you’re attempting to connect. You’ll receive amazing insights into family, work, health and relationships – don’t miss out! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You’ll have a prosperous few months! You might meet new people who inspire you about work or personal empowerment. Or you could get excited about spiritual prosperity ideas. In general, it’s important not to isolate when it comes to your spiritual growth. Find people to meditate with. When others “speak your language”, you’ll be filled with hopeful possibilities for all areas of your life. Aluna Michaels is a secondgeneration astrologer and Soul Evolutionist practitioner.
