Publisher’s Letter... Dear Friend: Each new year holds the power of possibility. There’s a chance for reflection on the past year, redemption, and a time to start anew. Each January I am infused with enthusiasm, hope and the energy of looking toward what is possible. We can start anew each day, as well—and allow the entire year to be infused with a fervor for reflection, renewal and rebirth. I believe the key to keeping this inspiration on a daily basis is achieved through balance. Balance an apple and a banana on a scale and the side with the apple effortlessly raises the banana. Does the apple have more nutritional value than the banana? No, it simply weighs more. In a similar way we determine balance in our lives. What we value most may not be where we devote most of our time. Instead, we place value on the responsibilities that weigh the most: usually job or family. As with the apple and banana, even though our job may place more pressure on our time constraints, our personal time is equally valuable. The seasons also play a vital role in balance. They have an essential purpose in the ever-constant renewal of the earth. Spring represents birth, summer is growth, fall is the harvest and winter invites rest. What is interesting is that our bodies follow the same schedule. This bodily reaction to the seasons is natural; but friction occurs when we fight these involuntary responses. Rather than feeling guilty about a sluggish winter, we should value this rest period and acknowledge the renewed strength it will bring in the spring.

New Year’s Health Resolutions

BY DR, NANCY RUSSELL

O

n the path to optimal wellness, several aspects of life are important. For the mind and body to function well, it is imperative to allow refreshing sleep, healthy foods, regular exercise, and stress management. For the New Year, I will share a few of my resolutions for 2016. 1. Physical: my physical goal is to move my body regularly with walking, weights and ballroom dancing. 2. Mental: Read a new book each month on personal wellness or spirituality. 3. Emotional: Share my emotions fully and regularly with my husband. 4. Spirituality: Donate time each month to my Church home and spend time in conversation with God daily. To expand on the physical part of the holistic quadrangle, I am presenting ideas to improve your physical environment. The physical environment plays a crucial role, specifically the quality of the water and food we ingest and the air we breathe. Pollutants abound. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: More than four billion pounds of chemicals were released into the ground in 2000, threatening our natural ground water sources. Nearly two billion pounds of air emissions were pumped into the atmosphere. Several thousand food additives are intentionally added to our food supply and thousands more slip into our food supply unintentionally during harvesting, processing, or packaging. Overall, the average American consumes about 124 pounds of food additives a year! In addition, exposure to toxins is increased by eating processed foods and fat, drinking or bathing in tap water, consuming excessive caffeine and/or alcohol, using tobacco, taking medications for long durations,

inadequate exercise, liver or kidney problems and occupational exposure. So what can you do to improve your health and minimize these exposures? Whatever you think about detoxifying your body, both critics and proponents agree on one thing: The best way to reduce the level of chemicals/toxins in your body is to bar their entrance. To reduce your exposure: 1) Don’t smoke and avoid secondary smoke. 2) Eat as much organic food as possible, especially if you consume animal products. 3) Use water filters in your refrigerator, sink and shower. 4) Use natural cosmetics, deodorants, and hair sprays. 5) Use nontoxic bug repellents. 6) Substitute chemicalladen, scented household cleaners and detergents for all -natural ones. 7) Limit your use of paint, varnish and wax. 8) Use air purifiers. 9) Avoid alcohol, artificial sweeteners and caffeine. 10) Don’t buy products presoaked in formaldehyde such as particleboard and permanent-press fabrics. Assist your system to eliminate toxins: 1) Exercise vigorously (sweating) at least 30 minutes three times a week. 2) Drink plenty of water daily; divide your weight

in half and that is how many ounces required per day. 3) Eat red grapes and berries, nuts and seeds, cruciferous vegetables, leafy greens, and garlic regularly. 3) Utilize a homeopathic or other detox method twice a year. 4) Participate in a 10 day or 28 day diet program that combines low allergenic, organic foods with a source of protein and nutrients known to enhance the body’s detoxification capacity. 5) Far-Infrared Sauna treatments. 6) Enroll in a Juice Fast or cleansing retreat. 7) Make an appointment to discuss an individualized approach to rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit. Detoxification of the body can lead to better sleep and relaxation, decrease in aches and pain, reduce allergy symptoms, aid weight loss, improve energy, and overall health.

Wisdom Within

Resolve!

R

BY SUZETTE SCHOLTES

esolve: To decide or to determine to do something. To make clear, explain or solve a problem. To transform; to convert (Funk & Wagnall’s Dictionary). Each New Year’s Day, students and I meet to resolve and set goals for the year. They seal their goals in a letter and I mail it to them around July 1 to see what was achieved. Amelia shared that all eight goals she set manifested! One that gave her joy was her intent to end conflict with her estranged sister. Her sis called her asking to get together after two years of separation. Amazing. Lindsey volunteered to model yoga poses with me for YouTube. I asked why she volunteered as she gave a good portion of her Saturday to this cause. “I want to create new adventures that stretch my creativity. I wish to get over fears of being visible,” she said. Indeed, being visible may frighten many. Her act of courage set her free. Yoga Nidra or “deep sleep” is an ancient practice where one becomes so centered and relaxed most resistance to our dreams melts away. In this practice, we create “imagery” to impact conscious, unconscious and subconscious mind. It’s an amazing tool. At the Yoga Studio we offer this practice every Thursday at 4:30 for an easy 45 minutes of letting go. Each week we discuss our “resistances.” Resistance varies from person to person; but, one common one is feeling worthy of asking for what one wants. Sometimes a person lacks confidence or determination. Holding on to our past, lack of forgiveness or the ego creates resistance. It is complex. However, the practice itself melts these resistances away. In The Book of Knowing and Worth, Paul Selig writes: “I see my destiny before me. I see the world as it is made manifest in my expression, and I witness the world before in transformation. I know who I am. I know how I love. I know how I serve. And I sing the song to my fellows as I perceive their faces. We are the same

frequency. I know you express yourself in your beauty and in your choice to be seen. I know how you love. I am your witness.” It’s never too late to create new goals and dreams. I set new ones often as our needs and wants change with new projects, situations, or new focus. Recently, I resolved that a project would resonate “ease;” and even as I wrote it, did not believe it could be. Inspiration came in the night and showed me how to let go of struggle to create the ease. Chicken-Soup-of-theSoul creators, Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield, published a book, The Aladdin Factor. “It is the wellspring of confidence, desire and the power to ask that allows us to make wishes come true,” Hansen wrote. Remember what Oprah said when a lady complained she did not receive a car? “You didn’t dream big enough!” Oprah said. Let’s shine our light on our golden resolve and make 2016 one of our best years yet!

Journey to Wholeness

Food First

The Most Important Meal

T

he mounting evidence shows your grandmother was right: breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day. A 2014 study reported higher insulin levels and insulin resistance in non-diabetic children who don’t usually eat breakfast. A recent study showed, as others have, that in type two diabetics, skipping breakfast raises blood sugar levels 30 40 percent for the rest of the day. The right breakfast could be key to curbing the epidemic of diabetes and diseases related to insulin resistance such as Alzheimers and osteoporosis. Many of us are still eating the breakfast Saturday morning cartoon advertisements promoted. This sugar and carbohydrate blast is the worst way to start your morning and with no better choices, it may be better to skip breakfast. The sudden rise in blood sugar causes the pancreas to overshoot the body’s need for insulin, leading to midmorning hunger or even a crash in energy, mood and cognition. Instead, I recommend saving the carbs for lunch and dinner and making breakfast the low carb meal of the day. The simplest way to accomplish this is to eat leftovers from dinner, a protein source, two fist-sized servings of veggies, including green and white ones, and a good quality fat source such as avocado, olives, nuts, seeds, olive oil, coconut oil or ghee. If this sounds weird, try putting those thoughts on hold long enough to try it. Most people experience even energy until their natural hunger kicks in at lunch time. Can’t give up the eggs? No problem. Enjoy them with steamed greens or a big salad topped with nuts or seeds, avocado and a drizzle of olive oil. Save the bread and potatoes for lunch or dinner. Rather have a portable breakfast? Try this smoothie for two:

All Morning Energy Smoothie 2 cups water 1/3 cup hemp seeds 1 handful (about 3/4 cup) cucumber cut into chunks 3 big kale leaves, stems removed 1 tsp cinnamon 1 handful (about 3/4 cup) frozen berries 4 TBSP olive oil 2 TBSP hemp seed oil Two large glasses or 2o-ounce blender bottles. Place all ingredients except the oils in a high-speed blender and blend until

smooth. Put 2 TBSP olive oil and 1 TBSP hemp seed oil into each of two glasses or blender bottles. Add the smoothie mixture. Stir or shake and enjoy. In 2011, 31 million, or 1 in 10 Americans skipped breakfast. The most commonly cited reason was lack of hunger. This could be a sign of poor blood sugar regulation and adrenal issues. When the blood sugar dips just before waking, the liver will correct the situation by releasing stored sugar into the bloodstream. If the liver overcorrects by releasing more sugar than needed, then hunger will be delayed. These folks really need to eat this kind of breakfast. It may be difficult at first, but it is critical to restoring proper blood sugar regulation, adrenal function and preventing diabetes and diseases related to insulin resistance. Many people like to exercise in the morning but not on a full stomach. It’s still important to eat or drink something before exercise. A few pieces of celery with sunflower butter, a handful of nuts or seed, 6 - 8 ounces of almond milk or 1/4 of the smoothie calms the body’s cortisol and adrenaline response by signaling the body to stop using its stores as a primary source of energy and to use food instead. Follow the workout with this kind of breakfast. Those who work out vigorously may benefit from a little more carbohydrate with their breakfast.

One Moment, Please!

L

iving in a world of uncertainty with change and challenge swirling around us, we can almost certainly feel overwhelmed. How do we not only maintain equilibrium, but also feel as if we are making a difference? One part of this recipe is acting as though every moment is the most important. No change is made or challenge met in any other way than one moment at a time. Another ingredient is the catalyst of personal experience. One’s pain, physical or emotional, can be life changing. We can become victims, drowning in our pain, or students of life, learning from it. I have met some amazing and resilient people at the ‘Relieving Pain in Kansas City’ meetings. This is a group sponsored by KU Medical Center and the Center for Practical Bioethics. People with chronic pain and practitioners meet to give support and to share and develop ideas for better treatment and research. I met Teresa, a chronic pain sufferer, who has founded ‘Share the Love House’ providing resources for the homeless. She carries food and supplies in her car, coordinating efforts to help those in need. A young woman, a former EMT, who suffered a traumatic brain injury on the job, shares that she is speaking to students and health professionals about brain injury. A young man who has spent over 20 years dealing with his Sickle Cell Anemia talks about how he and his family are working to establish residential spaces for people with chronic illnesses. One of my work colleagues, an immigrant from Mexico working hard to support his own family, collects money to send food and supplies to needy families that he knows. He doesn’t want others to suffer as he did. My experience with migraines since my early twenties and more recently with arthritis, has helped me to have compassion for people with acute and chronic pain. My work in holistic health was shaped by my own experiences over the last forty years. Searching for my own health solutions, I have explored many different treatment modalities. Having found approaches that work for myself and others, I know there is hope. This is

the ingredient that most profoundly affects us. Having hope in the midst of pain, loss and the inevitable ups and downs of life is the challenge for all of us. Learning the lesson of the importance and power of each moment is at the heart of finding hope. One of the Kansas City Royals players was asked how he dealt with the problem of being behind in a game. He replied that he paid attention only to playing his best at each moment, not really thinking about winning or losing. The forthcoming film about Mother Teresa, The Letters, based on the book by Brian Kolodiejchuk entitled Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light, promises to tell the story of the inner struggle of one of the modern world’s examples of compassion and hope. The revelation of her challenge of depression and internal darkness is good for us to know. Finding hope does not mean all is cheerful and rosy. It often means struggling with our demons. As we begin a new year, I hope we can all find ways to live the moment more fully, find hope and meaning in our lives knowing that changing ourselves will inevitably change our environment and others as well. Take your challenges and convert them into action and hope in your life. Be well, happy and hopeful in 2016!

Resolutions That Reap Rewards

E

very New Year, the topic of resolutions comes up. This is the time of year when people are fired up and optimistic about achieving their goals. I hear friends powerfully proclaim, “I want to lose ten pounds” or “I want to get out of debt.” I even heard one friend say, “I hope that this year Uncle Bob isn’t a pain in everyone’s neck at the family reunion.” One thing that all of these resolutions or goals have in common is that they’re going to produce more of what these people don’t want in their lives. Our subconscious is designed to help us achieve whatever we put our attention on. To make the statement “I want to lose ten pounds” true, you always have to be wanting to lose and never achieving. A better way to describe the desired outcome that you want is to say with gratitude: “I am so grateful that I have a physically fit, trim, toned, and energetic body that is pain-free and easily able to go on walks with my family and friends. We have so much fun together!” With a goal like this, your subconscious and your intuition are going to show up more often, and in more obvious ways, to point you toward steps you can take to make those statements true. Our words are powerful tools that help us to receive whatever we describe. Unfortunately, we often give voice to what we don’t want instead of what we do want, and then we’re surprised and disappointed with the results. For example, I know a saleswoman who often says things like, “I really hope that I’m not late for my appointment with ABC Company on Tuesday. They are a huge potential customer and I don’t want them to buy from my competitor.” Do you see anything out of the ordinary in these statements? Perhaps not, since many of us have learned to speak like this. We spend time talking about what we don’t want as a normal part of our speech. Then, we’re surprised with the results. In this example, the saleswoman is most likely going to be late for her appointment with ABC Company since that’s what she’s focused on, and she may lose the sale. Her subconscious recognizes that she’s focused on being late and her customer buying from a competitor. Accordingly, she may act in a way that makes those statements true. This is not what she really wants to happen. To enable her subconscious and intuition to help her, a more powerful statement would be, “I am so grateful to be on time and early for my appointments. I’m going to arrive at ABC Company 15 minutes early for my meeting, and I’m excited for the opportunity to sell our products and have my customer receive great value in return.” With statements like these, her subconscious and intuition will show up in a more obvious way to help make those statements true. She might get a strong, unexpected thought to check the traffic report before she decides on a route to the appointment and avoid a terrible accident and backup. She may feel an intuitive nudge to get ready sooner. She might receive an email or phone call that gives her insight into her customer’s needs so that her presentation can be designed to be more valuable. We can choose to use our words to achieve more of

BY MAY MCCARTHY

our goals in 2016. To do this, follow the three simple steps below:

Rewrite your goals daily with gratitude as though you’ve already achieved them. Describe the outcome that you want to experience and be grateful in advance for the achievement. For example, “I am so grateful that I am living in a beautiful new home that allows my family and me to feel comfortable, safe, and happy.” Or, “I’m delighted to receive a minimum of $____ that easily affords all of my living, giving, and entertainment expenses. I use my talents and skills in fulfilling and satisfying ways.” Rewrite your goals daily to keep them at the forefront of your thoughts and enable your subconscious and intuition to help you notice more possibilities throughout the day.

Read your goal statements out loud with emotion. The practice of reading your goal attainment statements out loud anchors the meaning more fully within you. This tells your brain that you’re serious about your goals manifesting so you can begin to notice more opportunities to take steps toward achieving your goals. Muhammad Ali, one of the world’s greatest boxers, said, “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” Speaking your goal statements out loud daily with emotion helps to convince you to believe that achieving your goals is possible. Once you believe, you can receive.

Set aside 20 minutes every morning to repeat the steps described above. The key here is to spend more time focusing on what you want to achieve rather than on what you don’t want or what others tell you that you can’t do. You have the freedom to choose! As you focus more of your time on your achieved goals, you will manifest more of them into your life. Earl Nightingale, a respected author and motivational speaker, said, “Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.” Repetition changes your beliefs; and once that happens, you will achieve your goals sooner and the results will last longer. This can be your happiest New Year of all time. Your well-worded resolutions can help you to reap the rewards that you want!

Imagine yourself achieving your desired outcomes. As you create a clear picture of your realized goals in your mind, you are creating new beliefs to make those goals manifest. Visualizing the successful completion of a goal is a powerful method that many professional athletes, musicians, and businesspeople use daily as part of their preparation and training for success. Fourtime Mr. Universe and seven-time Mr. Olympia, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has not only used mental imaging for athletic success but also credits it for his success as a Hollywood actor: “When I was very young I visualized myself being and having what it was I wanted. Mentally I never had any doubts about it.” Well-known author Robert Collier puts it this way: “Visualize this thing that you want, see it, feel it, believe in it. Make your mental blue print, and begin to build.” As you begin to see and feel yourself in your realized goals, you’ll welcome your achieved goals into your life sooner.

The 2016 Astrological Forecast

BY CINDY MCKEAN

R

eady for another exciting year? 2016 is full of promise and potential! It will have opportunities for new directions with health, personal goals, and conscious evolution. Starting on January 5–January 25, Mercury, the planet of communication, goes through the first of four retrograde motions this year. Retrograde motion means that a planet appears to be moving backwards in the sky. For around three weeks, there is a tendency for things to get jumbled or delayed. Back up your data, be careful when travelling, make sure to check and double check contracts before you sign them. All Mercury retrogrades this year are in earth signs, which brings a hue of sense and practicality to the retrograde energy. Mercury will retrograde in the sign of Capricorn, an earth sign. That will help you be focused on the practical aspects of life. It's an ideal time to reorganize into a simple structure that will facilitate your efforts for the year to come. Also in January, Jupiter, the planet of expansiveness, goes retrograde too. Jupiter is an outward-looking planet. During this backward motion which lasts until June, it's a great time to look inward, reevaluate, and reorient yourself to help you get ahead when the planet returns into direct motion. Being in the detail-oriented sign of Virgo until September, it's a great time to restructure habits with your lifestyle, diet, and expenditures. This will help you in particular if you want to eat healthier, decrease spending, and create healthy routines. Let your hair down in February and the first three weeks of March. Things are mostly smooth sailing. Aim for traditional ways to celebrate Valentine's Day when Venus, the planet of love, will be in Capricorn. If you’re serious about your partner, this is a favorable time to propose. March commences a time of changing storms over the next few months. Jupiter will be at a favorable angle with Pluto, the planet of transformation, and a challenging angle with Saturn, the planet of restriction. Saturn will go retrograde for around four and a half months; it may

ducks in a row before the holidays for the final Mercury retrograde of the year will occur from December 19 through the first week of the new year. As if coming full circle in a year, it will once again be in the sign of Capricorn. If you plan on travelling for the holidays, make extra time for delays and snafus. Have a backup plan prepared in case things don't go as planned during this period. Buy all your Christmas gifts before the retrograde. Once the retrograde hits, you don't need to wait until the New Year to follow resolutions—this period is a good time to start. By the end of December, 2016, all of the planets, with the exception of Mercury, will have left retrograde motion and gone direct. Overall, begin 2016 as a time for second chances, a time to revisit anything you may have overlooked or missed. With that, you can achieve completion of the steps in your path so you can continue to evolve during the coming year. not affect you personally—but it affects the population at large in the areas of finance, integrity, and government power. Overall, it'll be energetic awareness towards the greater good. Don't take shortcuts during this time. The road to personal evolution during the period between March and April is better followed one step at a time. These angles will clear in around three weeks but they'll hit again in May, June, and December as Jupiter meets them while in direct motion. At the end of April, the second Mercury retrograde for 2016 is in the sign of Taurus. During this time, reflect on your values—both physical and moral. If you feel like you haven't been following your higher purpose, you'll have a chance to redo your approach during this period. You may feel heightened enthusiasm when Jupiter goes direct the second week of May. If an infection breaks out before or around June, don't have too much fear. For a period of a year, you may hear about medical breakthroughs and advances in research as Saturn, the planet of restriction and research, makes a challenging aspect with Neptune, the planet of elusiveness, confusion, and drugs. In 2014 there was an Ebola scare.

EVOLVING…IN KANSAS CITY

The same planetary configuration between Saturn and Neptune helped scientists be very quick to work on vaccines and treatments. Saturn’s energy of quarantines may have prevented Ebola from becoming a lethal pandemic. Enjoy July and August, for the celestial sky will be more merciful on us during this period. On August 30, Mercury goes into it's third retrograde in the sign of Virgo until September 21. Virgo is a sign that expresses habits, hygiene, and meticulousness, among other things. Mercury rules Virgo and Gemini, so during this retrograde, if you have planets in the sign of Virgo or Gemini, you may feel a double dose of this energy. Review your health routines, your diet, and how you serve others. This can be a time to enhance the resolutions you started to follow at the beginning of the year. In September, Jupiter, the jovial planet of expansiveness, moves out of the sign of Virgo and into the sign of Libra for about a year. This shift will have an influence on aesthetics. It's a good time to decorate your home or office. Be sure to keep the habits you created while Jupiter was in Virgo, for Jupiter in Libra has a tendency towards indulgence. In December, be sure to get all of your

There Is No Right Amount of Devotion

I

n a recent moment of clarity I realized the key to achieving the happiness I seek does not lie in pleasing some supreme authority or following a specific set of rules to the letter. It is not about putting our desires below God's. It is not about self-sacrifice or denying and suppressing our power, creative expression, or aspirations. It is not about doing enough. (Enough of what? And how much is enough anyway?) There is no vindictive God sitting up in heaven with a clipboard and a stopwatch, observing us bumping around the maze, trying to figure out how to play a game to which we’ve never been given the rules—all along laughing his butt off as he continues to put checkmarks in the "she didn't get it right again" column. God is not setting us up to fail, judging and then punishing us because we made a wrong turn. I refuse to believe in a supreme being that would give us freewill, set us up to fail, then condemn us for eternity because we didn't get it right. But, oh boy, how that belief system has invaded the deepest corridors of our collective psyche. No matter how much my intellectual mind sees and rejects the glaring flaws in that system, I still shudder with incredulity as I observe my reaction to failure and disappointment. I act as if I have a debt to pay that I will never be able to settle—that I must be punished for my transgressions because, surely, I did not get what I wanted because I did not pray long enough and hard enough. Anybody got a cat-o-nine-tails I can borrow? We are not being punished when our life doesn't go the way we want! But it is so easy for us to backslide in our enthusiasm and wallow in that place of self-flagellation and doubt at the slightest hiccup in our plans. Somehow our understanding of how we achieve our dreams got coupled with a very specific set of do's and don'ts. Our guilt would have us believe that if things don't go the way we want, then it's

our fault because we didn't (fill in the blank) correctly or long enough. Plus, we now have to pay penance in addition to the toll already being extracted by our self-blame and humiliation. Here's the real truth: It isn't God who makes you feel flawed. We do it to ourselves. There is no right amount of devotion! There is no number of minutes a day that we must pray or meditate...or else. Likewise, there is no one formula for creating monetary abundance. There is no right amount of times to attend church. There's no secret "soul mate" dance to attract the perfect partner. There is no singular set of rules to follow to the exclusion of every other set of rules. Have you ever noticed what state of being you are in when things are going "right" for you? It isn't about how much you prayed that day. It isn't about how many candles you lit, how much money you gave to the homeless guy, or if you went to church on Sunday. Or, conversely, how much you sacrificed— in time, money, energy or dreams. When we are in the flow with, and feel connected to, our higher Source...this is when everything aligns for us. The peace, happiness, abundance, worth, love, and fulfillment we seek show up for us, effortlessly. That connection to Source, and what it takes to feel and sustain that connection, is yours to know and yours alone! No one or no thing has the right to tell you what or when or for how long you have to do your spiritual practice to "get" spiritual and then become worthy of whatever you are seeking. The point of establishing and maintaining that connection to Spirit in the first place is about staying in a state of balance and centeredness so that neither your internal slave driver nor external sources of perceived authority dissuade or define you. From that place of union, you

"Guilt: Punishing yourself before God doesn't." — Alan Cohen

can then feel and accept all you desire, pray for, and dream about. So what does connection to Spirit look like? It's different for everyone. Only you know what you need to do to feel connected to your Source and, therefore, walk with power and grace in your life. For me, I know I'm in that place when I feel solid and grounded in who I am, believe in my value, own my power, stay out of judgment, feel expansive in my energy field, believe in my dreams, feel connected to everything around me, have clarity about what I want, and experience an effortless sense of joy and trust. I feel an unlimited energy, a buoyancy in my Spirit, as if each step I take is being assisted, requiring little effort on my part. And, when we lose our connection to Spirit, the path to regaining that connection does not have to lead through self-deprecation, guilt, punishment, and sacrifice. If something isn't going the way you want, you have a choice in how you deal with it. You can abdicate your power, blame it on yourself and proceed to your 20 lashings. Or, you can simply recognize, "Oh, I've lost my connection." Then do whatever it is that helps you reconnect. That's it. No guilt necessary. No debt to be collected. No atonement extracted.

13

January 2016

So I have a challenge for you as you go into this New Year: Can you have the courage to release your guilt? Can you let go of whatever belief in punishment still clings to you? Can you trust in your own spiritual practice—defined by you!—to keep you nourished, connected and balanced in your life? Truly there is no right amount of devotion. There is only what is right for you.

Self Care: An Essential Key for Conscious Living

T

he hot water beats down on my shoulders, soothing aching muscles as I struggle to wake up. As I wash my body, I’m silently singing, “I am cleansing my aura, yes I am! I am cleansing my aura, yes I am!” to the tune of “She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain.” Next I rinse conditioner from my hair while holding my belly button and Third Eye in the Donna Eden Energy Medicine practice called “The Hook Up.” This practice activates the Radiant Circuits, our pathways for joy in the body. As I towel off, I affirm that my aura is strong and connected to my physical body. I apply rose body butter, blessing my arms, breasts, chest and neck. I rub cream into my feet, appreciating them for carrying me around everywhere I want to go. I pull cozy warm socks onto my feet and throw on a pretty satin robe as I finish getting ready for my day. By now, this practice has become routine. It has taken me YEARS to integrate all that my physical body requires in order for my spirit to live with fearless joy. My body sends me messages about what she needs and several bouts of serious depression have taught me that I better listen. If you’re a Giver, you may find that giving to others provides you with an

emotional charge, an immediate reward for your thoughtfulness and kindness. But giving to yourself may not give you that same reward. Giving to yourself is an investment in sustaining your personal flow of energy so that you can continue to give to others—but this is not necessarily supported in American society. Our culture doesn’t encourage time for reflection, leaving us with only surfacelevel attempts at self-care. We might indulge in a sugary, high-fat coffee treat at 3 p.m. when our circadian rhythms encourage sleep but the demands of our lives require caffeine. We order pizza to give us a break from cooking. We devour chocolate late at night, attempting to comfort and soothe inner stress. These are not acts of self-care; this is selfsabotage. True self care asks us to tune in, to listen deeply to what the body, mind and spirit needs in order to function at an optimum level which can only be determined by you. Creating a Self-Care Routine is simple and only takes a little bit of time to tune in and connect with your personal needs. Set aside 20-30 minutes to consider what has been happening with your energy level. Have you felt tired and sluggish? Do life and its demands leave you feeling overwhelmed? Has your Inner Critic

BY PRIESTESS KIM MACY

wreaked havoc on your attempts to create healthy boundaries? Time to take the wheel and set Intention for Self Care.

Step 1: Evaluate Personal assessment requires truth and respect. It is vital to check in with how you truly feel and do your best to respect what your energy level is trying to tell you. Where is your energy going? Are there people or situations that are draining...that you know are not good for you but you feel obligated to engage? What is your desired state of being? Observe what your body wisdom is saying to you and journal your findings. Do your best not to talk yourself out of what you feel or what you know to be true.

Step 2: Claim Your Energetic Field The magnetic field of the human heart extends several feet in all directions around the physical body. This means that your energetic field is constantly mixing with multiple energy fields everywhere you go. Personal relationships create energetic cords between us and those we care about and can be potentially draining if left unattended. Consciously pull all your energy from all people and places and bring it into your heart center. Breathe, expanding your body with the light of your own energy. Make sure that you are in your body and seal your energy field in light, imagining that you are able to contain your pure soul essence and nothing else in your secure field.

you quickly re-align when you are triggered internally or externally.

Step 5: Create a Self-Care Action Plan You know what you need in order to function in the world. Take some time and journal your specific needs. Include rest, exercise, food choices, supplements, spiritual nourishment such as meditation or Full Moon circles, emotional connections with friends, art, music...Have fun with it! A great place to start is with the Donna Eden Energy Medicine 5-Minute Daily Routine. These simple techniques support the body’s flow of energy along meridians, the neurolymphatic system, and keep our energies from getting scrambled and confused.

Step 6: Return to Your Resonant Field You will be pulled off center, but with daily care it will become easier to return to your Resonant Field and it will continue to strengthen with practice. The best thing we can do for ourselves, those we care about, and the consciousness of this planet, is to stay in alignment with our Higher Selves and with the Divine Source. A strong Self-Care Routine supports that alignment and has the potential to create a new reality of Heaven on Earth!

Step 3: Establish a Resonant Field I see creation of your Resonant Field as the act of holding space for the spirit within to shine through. This process was once automatic; but as humanity became more disconnected from Nature, Source and the Source Self (Higher Self)—the Ego has taken over, creating disharmony and confusion. Simply nurture your spirit, listen to your heart and let go of the “monkey mind” to get a sense of your own Resonant Field.

Step 4: Know Your Triggers What takes you out of alignment? Are there certain foods or substances? The news? Family members? Co-workers? Inner self judgment and thoughts of “not good enough?” Identifying what throws you out of your Resonant Field will help

Spiritual Horoscope

January 2016 Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Happy birthday Capricorn! This is a great relationship year as you release old resentments about others, and also negative beliefs about yourself. You’re able to let go of control and trust the flow of life. This month explore ideas about prosperity and financial abundance. Energy effortlessly pours into your heart and also your wallet! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Mercury is retrograde, teaching you the power of words and thoughts. Aquarians can deal with anxiety (because of your excitable ruling planet, Uranus), so it’s important to harness your mind. You’re here to transform restlessness into enthusiasm and creativity. Inner thoughts build your outer world. By observing habitual and subconscious thoughts and you’re on your way to freedom!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Do your friends and activities empower you? Or drag you down? Think about what you truly love to do — and the kind of people you want in your life. Cleanse out limiting situations and allow new energy and people to flow in! This increases self-esteem, and even your finances. Long-term partnerships improve and you’ll find things in common you hadn’t explored yet! Being authentic brings serenity, love and abundance.

Aries (March 21 – April 19) Exciting things happen with career! But since Mercury is retrograde, explore

options this month, but hold off on decisions. More is revealed in February, although you’ll be tempted by and convinced about right now. Believe it or not, something even better’s on the way! In relationships, so be patient, allow dust to settle, and communicate in depth later instead of saying/doing things you regret now.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) As a Taurus, your values and standards are very important. Make sure the spiritual path you’re on matches your deepest connection with the Universe. You might need to make changes, or at least stand up to someone about your beliefs that differ from theirs. You might also need to work out financial differences with your spouse. If single, don’t settle for people who are vastly divergent from your core self!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) With Mercury retrograde, it’s too easy to cause relationship challenges through misunderstandings. Meditate on releasing past power struggles with old or current partners. Take deep breaths before conversations of whatever sort. Find your center of power so you don’t

assume people are out to get you. If you’re coming for a balanced place, deep bonding happens in relationships — and maybe a positive shift at work too. Allow intuition to guide you rather than fear!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

Someone wants to know you at depth! Even if it’s a longterm partner, it’s an opportunity to become more emotionally intimate. In order not to be threatened or feel fear of possible abandonment (both of which pull you into your shell so you appear cold), meditate about letting go of old hurts. Be in the present moment with this person who loves you! It is safe to be here now!

Create a new budget for the New Year. Meditate about how you might overspend or be unconscious of money when you’re angry as an outlet for uncomfortable feelings. Getting clear about prosperity opens doors to a new job or better circumstances at your current one. You’ll also find inventive ways to manage your stress and improve your health when you’re fully present to emotions and not avoiding your inner signals!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

Mercury retrograde can cause confusion in the balance of career and relationships. Get clear about taking on extra work and how much is expected of you. Also let your spouse/partner know you’ll be less available. Be good to yourself. Get enough sleep. Treat your body well with good food. Breathe in between tasks to de-stress! It’s possible to be successful, happy and healthy!

I know it isn’t fun to contemplate focused planning, but it’s time to move toward goals. Meditate on your priorities. Distractions are basically wasted time and energy. You’ll have more joy from analyzing your thoughts and actions — and releasing what drags down your life progress. Relationships, money and self-esteem improve from this short time of discipline!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Childhood issues can be stirred up to be healed. Instead of reacting, meditate on the roots of the feelings. You respond so strongly now because you’re reliving a familiar emotional pattern. Examining your subconscious and letting go of the causes of your pain brings greater intimacy in a current relationship, or attracts a partner who is available on many levels. You’ll also heal old stress patterns and feel internally peaceful.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Libras seem harmonious, but actually you can be addicted to drama (and then you can re-establish peace). Meditate on this part of yourself, since you could be stirring up relationship trouble with Mercury retrograde this month. Balanced doesn’t mean boring! Also write about the positive and negative

things of 2015. Then rip up or burn the pages, setting yourself free and opening your mind to fulfillment in all areas!
