Contents Dear Friend,
The Inner Work of Consciously Creating Your Life
A new year begins again. And, as with each cycle of the seasons, it offers a chance for renewal and rebirth. The Winter Solstice, bringing with it the lengthening of days, is often considered the birth of the year. In the midst of the cold and darkness and still of winter, the new year breaks through slowly with the return of more light. Each new year holds the sacredness of this change. I always feel a rebirth of sorts and usually enjoy burrowing-in during the cold winter months, using the quiet and renewal to plan the coming year, reflect on the past, and eagerly await the spring. Our New Year, New You issue focuses on the inner searching of the season. It's a chance to start anew, and many take on resolutions to take advantage of this exciting opportunity. Whether you're focusing on eating whole foods, manifesting financial gain, taking on a new project, or simply want to lead a life more in tune with your inner guidance, the articles this month help you to focus and get clear on your goals and motivations for achieving them. I wish you the most prosperous, joyous New Year — and beyond!

Journey to Wholeness
FOCUS ON:
The Mentor in the Mirror BY JUDE LACLAIRE, PH.D.
I
n Greek mythology Mentor is the trusted counselor of Odysseus. Athena, disguised as Mentor, guides the young Telemachus in his search for his father. She is the goddess of prudent intelligence, child of Zeus, able to bestow skill, courage and victory in war for those who revere justice and listen to her persuasive tongue. Mentor was a man of integrity, an excellent friend of his friends and did not deal in lies. The figure of the wise and trusted counselor or teacher has the nature of both male and female. Shakyamuni Buddha in his teaching, the Lotus Sutra, introduces his disciples to the Dragon King’s Daughter, a mythical figure who is part dragon and part girl child. Her presence challenges the belief that only learned men can attain enlightenment and that it takes a long time to attain enlightenment. She appears before the assembly praising Shakyamuni Buddha, offering a jewel to the Buddha, transforms herself into a male and instantly attained enlightenment. This mythical character speaks to us of the wisdom of both male and female and the capability within each living being to become that enlightened whole person. These two stories remind us of the multi-faceted nature of the mentor. There is the mentor outside of oneself that guides, leads and protects us. There is the mentor within that has the potential for wholeness. Think for a moment about the people in your life that have been there for you to be the wise guide. What qualities did they have as they guided you along the path of self-discovery? How did their actions and words influence you in some positive way? What part of this learning do you carry forward in your life? I imagine the mentor being the mirror that reflects the limitless possibilities to he person. Jean Houston says, “We all have the extraordinary coded with us, waiting to be released.” The mentor relationship can be the catalyst to help the person unlock this inner potential. Take another moment and think about how many lives you touch each day. Are you a good mentor for others, even in the casual contact? Do you receive mentoring from others so that you may guide others? A good mentor will be the ‘guide on the side’ rather than the licensed ‘sage byonIngram theImages stage.’ The poet, Kahlil Image
Coaches
Gibran says, “If he is indeed wise, he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to he threshold of your own mind.” We often forget the great power we have to influence others. Claire Nuer asks the question, “Will you be the rock that redirects the course of the river?” Each day we have an opportunity to make or break a communication with how we look, speak and act towards someone. It can change a moment, a day or a lifetime. Sometimes you need a teacher, a model, an encouraging voice and there appears to be no one available. From this tangle of emotions and thoughts, you may emerge with a new way to do something, a new thought, a clearer vision of yourself or a particular situation. Alice Walker in her book “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose,” describes how a mentor of hers found the model within. “When Tony Morris said she writes the kind of books she wants to read, she was acknowledging the fact that in a society in which ‘accepted literature’ is so often sexist and racist and otherwise irrelevant or offensive to our lives, she must do the work of two. She must be her own model as well as the artist attending, creating, learning from, realizing the mode, which is to say, herself.” As you grow and learn, you are being mentored by others, often mentor yourself and become a mentor for others. When you look in the mirror next time, see what faces of the mentor you can identify. Today, more than ever we need to remember “A mentor is someone who allows you to see hope in yourself” (Oprah Winfrey).

here’s something so easy about a savory kebab –an uncomplicated entrée long on taste, short on fuss. My pick for this as yet unduplicated niche is Indian restaurant, Kebab Nights, an Overland Park casual dining spot in the slot formerly occupied by Masalas. Kebab Nights gives diners the taste of a wildly popular and similar casual dining restaurant in India called Barbecue Nation. Not to confuse, this isn’t anything close to American barbeque. Billed as ‘Fast Food Indian Barbecue’, the savory skewers and pots of fragrant biryanis are a welcome change to the surrounding area’s ubiquitous quick fare. Owner, Roushan Kumar is no stranger to restaurant management helming the more formal, full service Kulture Kurry located in the Shops at Corporate Woods. “Kebab Nights is meant to satisfy the customer who doesn’t need a white tablecloth experience. It’s fast, friendly and is an alternative for anyone searching for something different. “We love the idea of centering a restaurant on kebabs. Not only do the varieties of meat and vegetables give us endless options for our customers, but the marinades and spices the chef is using and changing slightly each week is a subtle Indian flavor profile that will be universally pleasing,” said Kumar. “So far our customers have been pleasantly surprised to learn that these skewers are healthier than most fast casual food options with low fat meats, no fried foods and lots of delicious vegetables cooked to perfection.” The expertly grilled kebabs feature lamb, fish, shrimp and chicken. Vegetarians will find options including paneer (a firm cottage cheese) and grilled vegetables. The sensory essence is spicy (but not too) and offers a change in the menu normally found in Indian restaurants.

Plates have 2 kebab skewers that can be mixed and matched, i.e., chicken and shrimp, lamb/ grilled vegetables and fish accompanying white rice, mint and spicy ginger chutney. These are generous servings for either lunch or dinner but if you’re really hungry, get a platter, featuring combinations of 4 skewers, biryani and mango kulfi (a type of semisweet dessert). When the food is delivered to your table it looks like way too much but it’s actually not – which keeps you from over -indulging. How novel in the age of BIG food. Clean Eating Basics for the New Year and New You BY ANGELA WATSON ROBERTSON
I
f you’re into healthy living, I’m sure you’ve heard the term “clean eating” to the point that you roll your eyes every time you hear it. The truth is that clean eating may mean different things to different people because our bodies are unique and the type of food that works for one person may not work for another. We are all bio-individuals. Yet, let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater and say that eating clean, which may be better named “eating well,” is something we can’t strive for. When a client comes to me and says they want to eat clean I know what they mean- they want to eat in a way that helps them feel their best. Usually this means eating in a way that gives them energy and doesn’t leave them feeling wiped out from a sugar crash, bloated, or gassy. Plus, they want to lose weight, clear up their skin, and improve mental health. All of this can be accomplished with the right nutrition for your unique body.
The basis of Clean Eating The basis of clean eating is to consume primarily whole, unprocessed food. Eating clean revolves around maintaining a balanced and personalized diet of fresh, unprocessed food including fruits, vegetables, grains, healthy fats, and some meats, fish, and dairy. All of this being said, the type of food you eat to feel energized, lighter, leaner, and happier, depends on a variety of factors. Yet, if you’re looking to clean up your diet and optimize your nutrition, here are some basic principles to follow:
Image licensed by Ingram Images
“Eating clean revolves around maintaining a balanced and personalized diet of fresh, unprocessed food including fruits, vegetables, grains, healthy fats, and some meats, fish, and dairy.”
Clean Eating 101 Stick to Whole Foods. Eat whole foods— those that occur in nature and don’t go through processing at a lab or manufacturing facility. Examples are: fruits and vegetables, grass-fed and free-range meats, dairy, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Embrace Home Cooking. If you cook for yourself, you are almost guaranteed to increase the nutritional value of your food. Restaurant food is more processed, less fresh, and often over-seasoned. Start with simple recipes like vegetable stir fry and then try new dishes as you learn more about cooking. Remove refined sugar and carbohydrates. Remove white foods (white sugar, white flour, etc.) from your diet if you’re aiming to eat clean. This includes all the standard desserts containing white sugar as well as white pasta, rice, bread, and pastries. Maintain balanced blood sugar. Keeping your blood sugar balanced greatly contributes to healthy food choices. When you wait too long to eat between meals or eat processed foods that spike
blood sugar -leading to a crash in energy later- you’re more likely to reach for sugar, fat, or caffeine to keep your energy up. If you continue this cycle, you’ll always feel irritable and exhausted. If you ensure you eat whole foods every 3-4 hours, your blood sugar and your mental state will remain stable. Combine protein, fats, and complex carbohydrates. Your goal should be to get a serving of healthy protein, fats, and complex carbohydrates at every meal. This will create optimal blood sugar levels and stave off your cravings and brain fog. Some great protein examples are: grass-fed meat, wild-caught fish, and organic, fermented tempeh and tofu. Healthy fat options are avocado, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. When trying out complex carbs, try quinoa, brown rice, or sweet potatoes. Quality over Quantity. Clean eating focuses on quality of food over the quantity of food and not all calories are equal. When you stick to a wholefoods diet, you’re much more likely to keep your caloric intake at an appropriate level for your body and maintain a healthy weight as a result. Whole

foods actually fill you up and fuel you, whereas empty calories—like candy and chips—fill a mental craving, but don’t physically fill you up. The Inner Work of Consciously Creating Your Life Evaluate Your Life
T
ake a moment right now to think about how you've been feeling lately. If you've been feeling a little (or a lot) depressed, apathetic, anxious, antsy, irritable, exhausted, over-extended, or overwhelmed, this could be a sign from your inner guidance system that your life is out of alignment with what you truly desire. So many of us were raised to believe that we cannot have the life we truly desire that if we‘re going to be ‘responsible’ adults, we must maintain relationships (even unhealthy ones) no matter what, live someplace we don’t like and work at jobs we hate just to pay the bills. We’re running endlessly on a soulsucking gerbil wheel. I know this might sound extreme, but if you take an honest look at your life right now, it’s likely you’ll recognize at least some of that disempowered mainstream conditioning showing up for you, which is at least partially running the show. Despite your conditioning growing up (and what the world at large may be telling you), I’m here to tell you that you certainly can live a life that truly makes your heart sing. Now, it might not happen overnight, it might take a lot of focus, work and commitment to get there, but you can get there! Creating the life that you love often takes ongoing, incremental
steps. As you take each step, you'll gain more clarity on the next step and the next step. As you do so, your vision for your life will continue to evolve into an even greater dream that you are bringing into reality.
Assessment and Action An important thing I recommend is to check in with your life at least once a month and do the work. Take a minimum of one hour, or even an afternoon, to sit down with a pen and paper or your journal. Ask yourself these six questions: 1. What's working well for me in my life right now? What's flowing? What's feeling good? (Write about this for at least ten minutes. Even if you're going through a rough patch, take the time to notice even the small things that are going well for you.) 2. What's not going well? Where would I most like to see improvement? What's feeling out of balance? What needs attention or change? What is making me feel irritable, angry, depressed, of any other emotion indicating I'm out of alignment? (Write about this for at least ten minutes.) According to author Jerry Hicks, “emotions are accurate indicators of the vibrational relativity between where you want to be and where you are right now, and your ‘Emotional Guidance System’ is always accurate and available to you at all times."
BY MAYA ZAHIRA
3. Keep in mind what's not going well for you, and face these questions head on. What is it that I really want, and what do I want to improve? (Be specific. Don't let anyone tell you what you can or cannot have in your life. Dream big! What do you really want? Where do you want to live, work, play? What people do you want in your life? What do you want your daily life to be like?) 4. On a scale of one to 10, 10 being the strongest desire, how strongly do I want these improvements in my life? 5. What's been holding me back from achieving this desire? (Be honest, and do your best to not blame others. Look for possible ways that you may have been blocking yourself.) 6. What are three action steps I can take this week to get me closer to my goal? (List them now.) Let's dive a little deeper into action steps. Clear, concise action steps with specific timeframes are truly necessary in order to achieve your goals. Be specificbroad action steps are really easy to avoid! An example would be someone who is unhappy with their job, and writes a step that says, “look for another job." Because this step is quite broad and actually includes many smaller steps within it, a person will likely feel overwhelmed and never actually get around to completing this step at
all. It’s better to write smaller steps with a time frame. (Example: submit two online job applications each week, starting this Friday). If you don’t include a timeframe, it is really easy to avoid doing the step altogether, or to keep putting it off. Decide how long you’ll work on a task, and set a deadline for completion. If you really want to reach your goal, this is crucial. "Whether you think you can or you can't, either way, you are right." Henry Ford I recently manifested my goal of a perfect place to live in nature, despite some big road blocks! Diligence, persistence, and daily action resulted in achieving my goal of living in a sweet little cottage on the Kansas prairie! One of my favorite quotes is: "You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes each day, unless you're too busy, then you should sit for an hour." Old Zen Saying. And how true it is! But let's say your personal goal is less concrete. Perhaps you want to feel more peace in your life. In that instance, think about concrete activities that help cultivate this feeling within you. Perhaps meditation helps you feel more peace. Or, perhaps being in nature does it. Your goal will then be to meditate for x number of minutes each day, starting today. Or, you will walk out in nature three times per week for thirty minutes starting tomorrow.
Make it Happen Throughout the month, you'll work on creating and implementing three or more action steps, and then follow through on these steps on a regular basis. Then, every month, set aside time again to go through these questions, set new goals, choose new action steps, or keep doing the already-established action steps. Follow this process regularly. Have fun with it and be creative, as you artfully design the masterpiece of your own life!

New Year, New Brain Excerpted with permission from The Brain Boost Diet by Christine Bailey
N
ew Year's resolutions are a great way to focus your brain on what you want to accomplish in the coming year. But if you really want to get the most out of the year ahead you also need to nourish your brain. Whatever your age our brains have the continual ability to grow and change: we can choose activities and strategies that will calm the brain, boost memory and motivation and enhance our mood. Our brains are known for their plasticity - this means your brain has the ability to grow new neurons, make new connections, and dampen dysfunctional connections. So this year resolve to get your brain up to speed with new diet and lifestyle strategies.
The Brain Boost Diet With a weight of 1.3kg/3lb our brains are one of our heaviest organs, demanding the most oxygen and glucose, and using about 30 per cent of the body’s glucose and 20% of your daily calorie intake. For optimal function your brain requires an array of essential amino acids, omega 3 fats, phospholipids and vital vitamins and minerals to make the neurotransmitters that affect how we think and feel. The Brain Boost Diet Plan is a revolutionary 4-week diet based on the principles of functional medicine and the latest research designed to cleanse, protect and renew your brain, unleashing its huge potential. Perfect for adults and children, this dietary approach can boost your mental health and capacity, tackle low mood, eliminate and prevent short term memory loss, forgetfulness and increase brain-power. All the recipes in the book are gluten free, low sugar and packed with nutrients to optimise brain function. There are suggestions throughout for dairy free options. The recipes are also designed to suit everyday eating and ideal for all ages. The Brain Boost Diet by Christine Bailey, is published by Nourish Books (18th January 2018 - Paperback - £12.99). Here are some top suggestions for resolutions that will have your brain in peak condition all year.
brain cells and keep our myelin sheaths healthy. Omega 3 fats have been shown to improve concentration, memory, focus and mood. Foods rich in omega 3 fats include oily fish (mackerel, salmon, trout, sardines, prawns). For vegetarians choose flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, tofu and leafy greens. Other healthy antiinflammatory fats to include are the monounsaturated fats found in olives, avocado, macadamia nuts and cold pressed rapeseed.
Include More Eggs in Your Diet One of the best ways to kick start your brain in the morning is to include eggs for breakfast. The protein in eggs, particularly the yolks can significantly boost your blood plasma levels of tryptophan and tyrosine - the building blocks to mood neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. They also contain choline and omega-3 fatty acids, which can improve memory too.
Get Spicy Spice up your meal with plenty of turmeric. This deep-yellow spice is a key ingredient in curry powder and has a number of benefits for the brain. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier, meaning it can directly enter the brain and benefit the cells there. Curcumin has been shown to improve memory, delay age related cognitive decline and ease depression by boosting serotonin and dopamine which both improve mood. Whether it's turmeric lattes, curries, homemade soups and dhal - aim to get more of this fabulous spice in your diet.
Stimulate Your Brain The more you challenge your brain, the more you do something, the more synapses your brain fires and creates. This year consider learning a new sport, read a new book, take up a new hobby or learn a language. New activities are not only a great to de-stress the body but help broaden what you ask your brain to focus on, enhancing its overall capacity.
Don't Skimp On Sleep

Spiritual Horoscope
January 2018 Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Happy birthday Capricorn! The theme of your year is LOVE! Meditate on your heart, remembering a time you felt appreciated by another. Let that joy expand and radiate through your body, mind and soul. Let it melt away feelings of unworthiness as it opens you to receive more love, more connection, more finances. Create a list of goals with a spiritually-minded friend and inspire each other to focus on staying open. Also practice forgiveness of childhood and family “issues” so you can freely move onward and upward! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
It’s an exciting career month! You can achieve a long-desired job or position. Spiritually, you can overcome a part of yourself that holds you back from love. Aquarians often feel on the outside, as if they were living behind an invisible wall, observing everyone else connecting and blossoming. Meditate on being included in life and bonded with joy. Allow vulnerability to surface, without seeing it as shameful or weak. Embracing your humanity shatters that self-constructed barrier once and for all!
Don’t pooh-pooh your intuition! What you think of as common sense or a casual idea is a profound message from your soul. Pay attention to inkings and hunches and see where they lead. You can meet a new partner if single, or feel a renaissance in a current relationship. You can have a deep healing about a family “issue” you thought was permanent. You might get a wonderful job offer that has a generous salary or get a bonus in your current position. Meditate on opening to the unknown and begin to feel comfortable out of your comfort zone. It’s easy for Taurus to stay in a rut, especially if it’s a fairly good rut! Challenge yourself to expand into a new level of awesomeness!
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Uranus moves direct and brings money breakthroughs! Be mindful of how you can waste money unconsciously so you can stop financial “leaks”. Meditate on prosperity for even more abundance. Also be aware of how your thoughts can literally make you sick or anxious. Lovingly protect yourself from your own negativity. As you focus on gratitude, there’s no room in your brain for random fear or worry. You’ll be physically healthier and emotionally happier! (And financially richer!)
Aries (March 21 – April 19) Uranus moves direct in your sign, bringing a great opportunity to re-invent yourself! Meditate on habits of thought that are a part of your identity and become ready to release them. You are who you consistently believe you are! Relationship breakthroughs are possible, or you can begin and exciting new bond. Not that Aries has too many hangups with sexuality, but you can heal old “issues” in that department as well! Also, you can be recognized at work for a long or difficult project, and your job just seems to get easier.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20) It may sound dumb, but breathing is so important for you! Gemini rules the lungs, and you know how nervous you can get and how much you over-think things. Daily deep breathing, even just for five minutes will soothe your nervous system and strengthen immunity. You’ll sleep better, have less anxiety and think more clearly. You’ll even feel a deep connection with the Universe from this simple act. Try alternate nostril breathing, or even the yogic “Bee Breath” (block ear with fingers and hum as you exhale).
Cancer (June 21 – July 22) It’s a romantic start to the New Year! You can start a new relationship in a bold, brave way. Meditate on past hurts, betrayals or patterns of problems in previous partnerships. You can have major insights, be able to put experiences into perspective, and release pain. Now you can venture into the future with a fresh heart without baggage! Even if currently connected, the bond improves because you can see

him/her now, instead of looking at him/ her through “glasses of the past”! You’ll even have financial improvements as you let go of old beliefs about money.
meditate on opening to new avenues of prosperity. You can even have a windfall or a financial gift!
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)
Energetic Mars and abundant, lucky Jupiter are in your sign! You can make resolutions around exercise that actually stick. Also, meditating on forgiveness gives access to energy that’s been caught up in processing old anger. You can be amazingly creative, productive and positive. Relationships heal, and your self-esteem is at a twelve year high! Working with affirmations and gratitude brings amazing results. Look up the meditation style of “Open Focus” which fits your expansive Jupiter transit.
The total eclipse in your sign this month heals relationship problems, as well as issues around self-love. Meditate on forgiving childhood family drama. The more unconscious pain you expose and release, the freer you are to live and love from new chosen patterns, rather than just repeating habituated karmic cycles. Uranus moving direct inspires your spirituality in a new direction. You could start yoga, or feel more eager around your meditation practice. You could find a book or teacher that excites you about new possibilities for your life.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) The total eclipse this month helps uncover unconscious fears that hold you back from feeling fully alive! Meditate on the roots of these beliefs. They are not true, even if you’ve thought them thousands of times, they’re just thoughts! Right now you have extra energy to create positive beliefs that have momentum! Bravely think in these new ways until they become new habits and shape a new life for you! Uranus moves direct, awakening a level of trust. You can heal issues of intimacy and sexuality. You can also break poverty thoughts, so doors to abundance fling open! Enjoy yourself and don’t pick on the present moment. Allow yourself to see it as perfect just as it is.
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) As Uranus moves direct, you’ll have breakthroughs in relationships. You’ll have a totally new perceptive on a present partner. Old resentments can go in a “poof”! You’ll even wonder why you saw things as problems and come to a new level of appreciation and love. If single, you can attract someone who doesn’t reflect old patterns or childhood/family “issues”. Also,
13
January 2018
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) The total eclipse this month, as well as the conjoining of Mars and Jupiter connect you with a deep spirituality. Meditate on your closeness with Life Force. Imagine the power and wisdom of each of your cells, and the intelligence that guides them. Feel gratitude and see the benevolence of the Universe in all areas of your life. You’ll have financial openings, and a jumpstart in relationships, whether new or old. Keep a notebook or your phone by your bed to record dreams right when you wake up. There’s many messages you don’t want to let drift away as the day progresses! Aluna Michaels is a second-generation astrologer. She also holds a Masters in Spiritual Counseling and has been teaching and consulting for more than three decades. Her book “Spiritual Gifts of the 12 Astrological Signs” is now on Amazon in Kindle version and as an E-book on her website. Aluna is available for appointments in her home, by phone or Skype.
