Dear Friend,
Contents
I admit I’m more than a little bit interested in natural remedies. I love herbs and grow them each summer. Then in the fall I harvest them to create tinctures, hang to dry, store in the freezer (basil, in particular, is nice to have all winter), and create rubs mixed with spices. The tinctures are used medicinally all winter. To create them, the herbs are stuffed into jars filled with vodka until covered. Tightly seal the jar and shake every few days. Depending on how strong you want it, the tincture is usually ready in a few weeks to a few months. You can strain the flavored vodka or leave the herbs in the liquid. Store out of direct light. Then when needed, take a dropper-full of the tincture and add it to hot water with lemon and honey for a natural remedy for what ails you. Different herbs have their own medicinal qualities, but some of my favorites are thyme tea for congestion and cough, and chamomile for anxiety and stress. I also drink Rooibos tea for its antioxidants. Other hot drinks I enjoy on a regular basis are ginger tea (ginger root, honey, and lemon steeped in water) for digestion, and golden milk (milk of choice warmed with cinnamon stick, ginger root, and turmeric root) for an all-around wellness booster. Turmeric (Curcumin), in particular, is getting a lot of notice for its healing properties including killing cancer cells in a Petri dish, plus it’s anti-inflammatory and a natural pain reliever. Other star foods for healing include garlic, milk thistle, ginseng, aloe, and so many more. While I’m particularly drawn to herbal remedies, in this issue, our writers explore additional natural remedies like binaural beats, essential oils, CBD oil, and natural skincare products. Here’s to living naturally!

EATING APPALACHIA EATING THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST What is American food? When you dissect the typical American meal, you will find that almost every ingredient is an “immigrant.” Foods like beef, pork, chicken, apples, tomatoes, corn, wheat, and oranges all originated from lands outside the United States. Yet there are dozens of indigenous fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish and game animals waiting to be rediscovered by American epicures. Appalachia and the Pacific Northwest are two regions with exceptionally diverse ecologies. And diverse ecologies mean diverse, superlative flavors. In Eating Appalachia and Eating the Pacific Northwest, Darrin Nordahl also discusses some of the larger agribusiness, governmental agency, and ecological issues that prevent these wild, and arguably tastier foods, from reaching our table and illustrates how our food choices impact our local ecosystems. Additionally, he profiles the champions of these native foods and the annual festivals that celebrate the ingredients. Some of the festivals featured include the Feast of the Ramson in Richmond, West Virginia; the Pawpaw Festival in Albany, Ohio; the Dungeness Crab Festival in Port Angeles, Washington; and the Oregon Truffle Festival in Eugene. Each book is packed with dozens of color photographs and recipes for every ingredient—including Pawpaw Panna Cotta, Chianti Braised Elk Stew, Pan-Fried Squirrel with Squirrel Gravy, Wild Oregon Berries with Limoncello and Mascarpone, Wild Ginger Poached Pears, and Geoduck Fritters. The Why and How of Nutritional Supplements BY JUDE LACLAIRE, PH.D.
L
et’s explore the complex terrain of nutritional supplements. I want to walk you through the reasons we need to take nutritional supplements and give you some guidelines for the task of finding helpful supplements you can trust. Consider this. Fifty years ago one carrot would supply the same amount of zinc found in twenty carrots today. You’d have to eat twice as many vegetables to get the same amount of calcium you got twenty years ago. The article, The Roadmap to Supplements, published by Beyond Health, tells us, “Premature harvesting, factory processing and other practices of agribusiness have dramatically reduced the nutritional quality of our food.” When the produce arrives at the store, picked before it is ripe and shipped, it is losing as much as eighty percent of its nutritional content. The introduction of massive use of herbicides and pesticides
began in the 1940s in this country. In 1962, Rachel Carson wrote and published Silent Spring, the origin of the modern environmental movement. This groundbreaking book gave us the scientific studies warning of the degradation of our soil, air and water. Over thirty years later, Our Stolen Future (1996) by Theo Colborn, Dianne Dumanoski, and John Peterson Myers, further explored the continued devastating damage done to the environment; animals, plants and humans, by manmade chemicals. I heard Theo Colborn speak at the Beyond Pesticides Conference (2001) about the effect of herbicides and pesticides as endocrine disruptors. The health of our planet and all the living beings that inhabit it are affected negatively by the use of destructive chemicals. The Roadmap to Supplements tells us, “While our food sources are diminishing in nutrients, there is an unprecedented burden of exposure
to an increasing number of environmental toxins being placed in our bodies, dramatically increasing our need for nutrients.” Let’s look at how you can choose nutritional supplements that work. First, look for Quality Assurance. Find products that have been manufactured at a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) facility. These facilities must comply with high standards. To assure that the raw materials are of high quality, confirm that the manufacturer has a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each ingredient. Check to see if the product is certified by a thirdparty quality assurance organization. These organizations determine if supplements meet quality standards: NSF International, US Pharmacopeia, Consumer Lab, or Informed Choice. These standards assure that the supplements are free from contamination and are accurately labeled. The article, How to Choose Nutritional Supplements That Work by Deane Alban states, “A study of 55 brands of vitamin D supplements found they contained between 9 percent and 146 percent of what was listed on the label! Choosing supplements that meet quality standards guarantees the efficacy of the product. Cutting cost for lack of effectiveness saves you nothing. What supplements should you be taking? The articles Roadmap to Supplements and The Fundamental Big Three by Lisa Everett Andersen and Shana Curtis Webb tell us that a good multi-vitamin with the sufficient

vitamins and minerals and Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3 and Omega 6) are a must for a person of any age. Formulas may be different for younger children. These two supplements are the foundation for good mental and physical health. Vitamin C is a great addition for almost anything. Linus Pauling, a winner of two Nobel prizes, one in Chemistry and one for Peace, was an advocate for the liberal use of Vitamin C. CoQ10 plays an important role in fighting free radicals, is a powerful antioxidant and helps support the cells that support our heart, liver, kidneys, and immune system. There are certainly many other important supplements that could benefit you. My life and the lives of others have been made healthier, happier and more vibrant through the informed use of nutritional supplements. Choose well! You won’t ever regret spending more for the best products. Enjoy!

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever) and What You Can Do! BY NANCY RUSSELL, M.D.
A
s the seasons change, especially from winter to spring and summer to fall, allergic rhinitis or hay fever can plague many of us. Symptoms include sneezing, stuffed, runny nose, red, itchy eyes, headaches and feeling tired and out of sorts. Medical scientists don’t know why humans have allergies. Your immune system has mistaken pollen from grasses, trees or weeds for a foreign invader and revved up its defenses, triggering these symptoms. Mold, animal dander, microscopic dust mites and dust itself can also cause airborne allergies. Hay fever affects about one in five Americans. Chronic inflammation and nutritional deficiencies can cause allergies to be worse. Chronic inflammation is caused by the standard American diet (SAD) with processed foods, bad fats and too much sugar and white flour and refined carbs. The first way to start decreasing inflammation in the body is to eat mostly fresh, whole foods, grassfed and free range meats, cage free eggs, nuts and seeds, omega-3 rich fishes, plenty of vegetables, fruits instead of processed sweets and substitute olive, avocado or grape seed oil for vegetable oils. Assess for nutritional deficiencies as vitamin D, vitamin C and magnesium deficiency can cause allergies to be worse. When going outside for an extended period of time, such as yard work, when allergens are high, wear a mask to minimize your exposure. Also consider a nasal irrigation when you come in from outside. Nasal irrigation is performed with warm, distilled water with salt and baking powder using a neti pot, a NeilMed or Nasopure device. Nasal irrigation can wash out allergens and pollutants and lessen symptoms of allergy. There are many different natural approaches to allergy
A good method to use peppermint oil is five drops in a diffuser and inhale the vapors. Basil oil reduces the inflammatory response to allergens and supports the adrenal glands. Eucalyptus oil opens the lungs and sinuses, thereby improving circulation, acting as an expectorant and reducing symptoms of allergy. Lemon oil supports lymphatic drainage, kills bacteria and can eliminate allergy triggers in the air when diffused. Tea tree oil is also antibacterial and can eliminate allergens in the air. A combination remedy with lemon and tea tree oil is to add 40 drops of lemon oil and 20 drops of tea tree oil to a 16 ounce spray bottle. Fill the bottle with pure water and a teaspoon of white vinegar and spray the mixture “When going outside for an extended period of throughout the home to eliminate allergy triggers and cleanse the air time, such as yard work, when allergens are high, and furniture. wear a mask to minimize your exposure.” Blending the best of both worlds for treatment of allergic relief. Weekend Getaway All aboard the Missouri River Runner train to Hermann, Missouri where you’ll discover wineries, German food, shopping, and a unique glamping experience in a tree house BY JILL DUTTON
“
I need to get away for a few days,” my youngest daughter, Tara, announced. Her statement came at the perfect time as I had just been offered a chance to go glamping via Glamping Hub. With more than 35,000 properties hosting 27 different types of glamping, we found numerous locations near Kansas City. When I saw a property in Hermann, MO—in a treehouse, no less—I knew we found the perfect weekend getaway. I booked our train tickets online. It turned out that Amtrak was having a buy one, get one free offer that weekend so we got both tickets for the price of one! We packed a cooler with snacks, threw a few outfits into our luggage, and were ready to go.
Missouri River Runner The train runs daily from Kansas City to St. Louis with a choice of the morning ride that departs at 8:15 a.m., or the afternoon ride at 4:00 p.m. For about four hours, you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the scenery. Unfortunately, because of the recent flooding, the train wasn’t
running. They put us on a bus instead, and although we missed the adventure of riding the train, the chartered bus was comfortable and fun too.
Glamping We were booked to stay at The Cottage, a rustic getaway set in the woods just outside town. Our first night we slept in the cabin, a delightful space with a queen bed downstairs and a loft that held two twin beds and an entrance to the deck with a hot tub. Each morning we would walk to the dining room, a sunny and vibrant space where Keely Pettijohn, the host, would chat with the guests while serving some of the best meals of our trip. My daughter is sensitive to gluten, so the first morning Keely whipped up the best gluten-free pancakes I’ve tasted, with bananas and walnuts and topped with maple butter. Each breakfast comes with a smoothie, a savory, and a sweet, and that morning, in addition to the pancakes, we enjoyed a ham and cheese egg and a mixed berry smoothie.
The second morning brought a Monkey muffin (think pull-apart cinnamon roll covered with cinnamon butter) that I still think about today—it was that good— plus an orange and banana smoothie and a Tuscan frittata with roasted peppers. We slept in the treehouse on Saturday night. It was all about the view. Set high in the woods, there were two decks to sit and drink coffee or watch the wildlife, plus an abundance of windows inside to savor the view into the evening.
Dining With a late arrival Friday evening, the Tin Mill Steakhouse, where we’d planned to have dinner, was about to close. Instead, we ran across the street to the Tin Mill Brewing Company which stayed open an hour later. They were accommodating and quickly had a couple of cheeseburgers and a beer flight ready for us. For lunch on Saturday, after touring the Stone Hill Winery, we dined at their Vintage Restaurant. Nominated a “Best German Restaurant in America” by GermanDeli.com, it was satisfying to sample their authentic dishes. For a variety, try the German Trio, a smaller portion of schweineschnitzel with your choice of sauce (I always pick the Jager sauce, a delightful wine and mushroom sauce); tender sliced, house marinated beef sauerbraten with a spicy Hermannsberger wine sauce, and a locally produced wurst served with whole grain mustard. Dinner that night was at Harvest Table, where they serve freshly cooked items using locallysourced produce and meats when possible. Tara enjoyed a huge piece of prime rib with smashed potatoes and I had the schnitzel with green beans. We departed on Sunday at lunchtime so made a point to stop by Hermann Wurst Haus to buy a couple of sandwiches to eat during the ride home to Kansas City. You’ll want to allow plenty of time to peruse this deli and store as it’s packed with unique food items,
L to R from top: Tara and Jill depart Union Station, breakfast at The Cottage, downtown Hermann, Hermann Wurst Haus, treehouse at The Cottage
their award-winning bratwursts, plus artisan beers and craft sodas.
Shopping Hermann is a walkable town. Print a map from the Visitor Center before you go, or pick up a Visitor’s Guide at many of the businesses, to be sure and not miss any of the unique shops like Sugar Momma’s candy store, Antiques Unlimited2, and Topiaries garden, gifts, and art store.
Museums History buffs will enjoy touring the Deutschheim State Historic Site, Historic Hermann Museum, and more. Learn about all the museums on the Visit Hermann website.

Wineries And of course, there are the wineries for which Hermann is famous. Set in Missouri Wine Country, the lush landscape provided the perfect location for German settlers to plant grape varietals. Check out the Hermann Wine Trail before you go to plan your route. The Hermann Trolley makes regular rounds to the wineries and you can book unlimited rides for a day for $25. *While parts of this trip were hosted, the opinions are my own. Stop! Do You Know What You Are Putting On Your Skin? BY KAREN IVES
O
ne of the most important parts of living is looking and feeling our best. We spend a lot of time and money in search of the perfect magic solution, and we are promised amazing results, but at what price? Most of us have NO IDEA what is in the beauty and skin care products we used this morning. We are either uninformed or unconcerned with safety and often believe that someone, somewhere, is watching out for us. Not So! You may think that if it on a store shelf, it is safe. WRONG. The FDA has no authority to require companies to test products for safety. There are hundreds of deadly chemicals that are commonly used in skin care products. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states that the average adult uses 10 personal care products each day, with 150 unique chemical ingredients. Do you know the lipstick you are wearing or kissing, may contain lead? Do you know that your mascara may contain mercury? The products that we smear and rub into our skin and onto our faces may be harming us irreparably, and we don’t even know it. Consumers can be exposed to several toxins in “beauty” and “health” products through skin absorption, inhalation, and ingestion. We think because we pay a higher price our cosmetics are safe; when in fact many are linked to cancer, hormone disruption and other health risks. Some of the ingredients in beauty products aren’t that pretty. U.S. researchers report that one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Many products include plasticizers (chemicals that keep concrete soft), degreasers (used to get grime off auto parts), and surfactants (they reduce surface tension in water, like in paint and inks). Imagine what that does to your skin, your internal organs, and the environment. How do you feel about using those types of products on your delicate skin? Even in small, cosmetics-sized doses, exposure to these toxic ingredients can become dangerous. Have you heard of the Dirty Dozen of Skin Care? You can avoid
harmful chemicals when you audit your bathroom and make-up stash using this list of harmful ingredients: 1)BHA and BHT: Common preservatives, BHA and BHT are found mainly in moisturizers and makeup. BHA and BHT are known to have adverse affects on the reproductive system and immune system. They are suspected to disrupt the endocrine system and may cause cancer. 2)Coal Tar Dyes: Occurs naturally in coal, crude oil and gasoline. These are found commonly in shampoos and cosmetics that are dyed (such as hair dye). Coal Tar Dyes are recognized as a human carcinogen, and many contain low levels of heavy metals, which can be linked to brain damage. 3)DEA-Related Ingredients (Diethanolamine): DEA compounds are the chemicals used to make our cosmetics creamy and foamy, so they are routinely used in moisturizers and shampoos. On a surface level, DEA’s can cause skin and eye irritation. High doses of DEA can cause cancer. 4)DBP: Nail care products, such as nail polish, use Dibutyl Phthalate as a solvent for dyes. It is also used as a plasticizer, which keeps nail polishes from becoming brittle. It is banned from being an ingredient in cosmetics in Europe. The effects of DBP are far-reaching. For adults, DBP impairs fertility. For young girls, Dibutyl Phthalate has been shown to cause early puberty. And there is evidence that it leads to developmental defects in unborn babies. 5)Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a preservative used to increase the shelf life of cosmetics. It is a known carcinogen, as well as a toxin to the immune system. Cosmetics which utilize Formaldehyde continuously release small amounts of the chemical, which are leeched into the body. 6)Parabens: Chemicals with many uses for the cosmetic industry, including as a preservative and antifungal/ antimicrobial agent. 75-90 percent of cosmetics contain parabens, and are most commonly found in lotions, creams and underarm deodorant. Parabens are some of the chemicals most easily absorbed by the skin, and linked to breast cancer, male reproductive functions, hormonal disruptions and DNA damage. Not-so-Fun
Fact: parabens are registered with the government as a pesticide! 7)Fragrance: We love to smell good, right? Unfortunately, there is a price to pay to enhance your scent: the 3000 different chemicals that are used to create synthetic fragrances are linked to endocrine disruption, reproductive issues, triggering allergies and asthma, and even cancer. Parfum has been found in some products marketed as “unscented.” 8)PEG Compounds: If you use cream-based cosmetics, you have most likely encountered PEG’s. They are used as softeners, solvents, thickeners and moisturecarriers. Polyethylene Glycols are shown to irritate the skin but have also been linked to contaminants that cause cancer. 9)Petrolatum: A mineral jelly oil used in hair products, lip balms and moisturizers to lock in moisture. It is the bi-product of the manufacturing of sudsing cosmetics including shampoos, body wash and children’s bath products. Europe has deemed Petrolatum as a carcinogen and restricts it being used in cosmetics. And while it is ranked as a possible carcinogen in America, the United States government has placed no restrictions on its usage. Petrolatum may also cause allergies or skin irritation in small doses. 10)Siloxanes: Siloxanes are used in hair care products and deodorants to soften, smooth and moisten. They also aide hair products in drying more quickly. When checking ingredient lists, look for words ending in ‘-siloxane’ or ‘-methicone.’ Siloxanes inhibits hormone function and have been found to harm the reproductive and immune systems. They may also impair fertility. 11)SLS: SLS’s are used to make cosmetic products foamy, and therefore found in shampoos, cleansers, bubble baths and cleaning detergents. These
EVOLVINGMAGAZINE.COM
chemicals can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide, both of which may cause cancer. SLS’s can have an adverse affect on the nervous system and human development. 12)Triclosan: This chemical can be found as an antibacterial agent in cosmetics products such as toothpaste, cleanser, antiperspirant/deodorant and hand sanitizer. This is another cosmetic ingredient that has been classified as a pesticide by the US government. Not only is it an endocrine disrupter, but it disrupts normal breast growth and contributes to bacterial resistance. Remember this is only a tiny fraction of the deadly chemicals in your beauty and skin care products. There are hundreds being discovered every year. It is important that the public is educated about potentially harmful ingredients in our personal care products. As the saying goes… ”There’s An App For That”. The EWG has developed an App “Think Dirty” to check your cosmetic products for harmful ingredients. At the very least, when you go to the beauty counter or drug store, read your ingredients. Make your body and the environment happy!

Balancing Your Chakras with Essential Oils BY CHRISTI CLEMMONS HOFFMAN
P
lant essences and oils have been around for thousands of years. Long ago, frankincense and myrrh were used for their antimicrobial and immunostimulant properties. The ancient Egyptians used aromatic oils for cleansing and protecting the skin, in addition to connecting with the gods and as aids in mummification. Today, we use essential oils for cleaning and purifying the home and the air (lemon, black pepper, grapefruit, to name a few), to relax and aid with sleep (lavender, sandalwood, vetiver), for energy (eucalyptus, rosemary, basil), and to perfume the body or home. But did you know that you can also use essential oils to balance and clear your chakras? Chakras are energy centers throughout the body. There are seven principal chakras running vertically through the body from the tailbone to the crown of the head. Together with the aura, the chakras comprise the energy system. Each chakra has physical structures in the body, as well as energetic and emotional qualities, that it governs. When open and balanced, the chakras control the flow of energy and well-being through the body. When blocked or imbalanced, the flow of energy is impeded, much like kinking a garden hose. What causes chakras to become blocked or imbalanced? Stress, trauma, injury, negative thoughts and beliefs—in short, life. Consistent, longstanding patterns of stressors, including negative beliefs, create bigger blocks. Fortunately, there are many ways to realign chakras, including meditation, affirmations, stones, and essential oils. Root Chakra The Root chakra is located at the tailbone. Red in color, it’s concerned with trust, security, grounding, and having physical and material needs met. Root chakra problems can stem from disruption in the family, a distant parent, poverty, trauma, job loss, etc. Physically, the Root chakra governs the feet, knees, hips, spine, intestines, legs, rectum, genitals, and tailbone.
When the Root chakra is blocked or imbalanced, we can experience obesity, hemorrhoids, constipation, sciatica, bladder issues, trust issues, security issues, “spaciness,” or food issues. Oils to use: Cedarwood, Frankincense, Patchouli, Vetiver
Sacral Chakra The Sacral chakra is located between the navel and the pubic bone. Its color is orange, and it is concerned with creativity, passion, relationships, sexuality, and feelings of gender identity. Sacral chakra issues can arise from sexual trauma, internalized messages about gender and sexuality, and suppressed creativity. The organs and areas associated with the Sacral chakra are the bladder, lower back, testes, uterus, ovaries, fluid functions, kidneys, urinary tract. Sacral chakra dysfunction is linked with creative blocks, low back pain, infertility, sexual dysfunction, emotional stability, depression, or allergies. CBD Oil As a Natural Alternative
C
annabidiol (CBD) oil has become the hot new ‘natural health’ trend in states that have legalized medical marijuana. The nonintoxicating marijuana extract is being credited in many natural news media platforms as a treatment for a host of medical problems such as epileptic seizures, anxiety, pain management, or even insomnia. CBD is the naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of cannabis. This plant has a long history as a medicine going back thousands of years. The fact that CBD is therapeutically potent, as well as non-intoxicating and easy to take as an oil, makes it an appealing treatment option for those who are cautious about trying cannabis for medicinal benefits. As a Certified Holistic Nutrition & Natural Nutrition Clinical Practitioner, I support people to address unpleasant symptoms and general health and wellness through the use of particular nutrients, whole foods, wellness practices, and supplements. Over the past two years, I have seen a dramatic increase in clients coming to me with medical prescriptions for CBD oil. Typically my clients are using their medically prescribed oil to address anxiety disorders, sleep disturbances, chronic pain, and PTSD. It is important to know that there are several strains and dose ratios of CBD oil that are intended for different uses and symptomatology. Therefore, before you dive into the world of using CBD oil, I strongly recommend that you speak to your doctor for a referral and find a reputable company with trained advisors that can counsel you on the best dose, ratio, and strain of CBD oil that will meet your health goals. The negative stigma of using CBD oil is starting to wane as it becomes more mainstream. Your mom, brother, or grandma may be regular customers. What I hear most often from clients is that by using the CBD oil they were able to stop or reduce taking strong sleeping pills or arthritis cortisol creams which caused them several unpleasant side effects. By using prescribed CBD oil, they now have reduced anxiety or pain, and are sleeping better but don’t have the digestive issues or foggy mental

Once a client has seen his/her doctor and/or their CBD expert and has decided to use CBD oil as a natural alternative, a common question I get is “How can I take the oil in a way that is pleasant?” I often recommend adding their prescribed oil to a simple elixir or latte that they can make at home. Binaural Beats to Get Your Muse Singing BY ANGELA YURIKO SMITH

eadline approaches, and the screen is blank. You place your fingers on the keyboard, but your mind is also blank. All you can think of is another coffee and the laundry that waits. Where is the muse? The third email has just popped in your inbox asking for a sneak peek at the painting you’ve been commissioned to do. You glance at the photograph of the beloved pet you’re supposed to immortalize and then back at the canvas. So far all you’ve managed to capture is a lot of nothing. Where is the muse? You have three chords set, but hardly enough to put all the words you’ve been given to music. You strum aimlessly as you stare out the window. Nothing is coming except the mail, which proves to be just enough distraction to pull you away for a few hours. Where is the muse? Know that you're not alone in these moments. All creatives at one time or another have experienced a lack of production due to an absence of ideas. It’s a frustrating, humiliating experience to have the opportunity but not the creative energy to take advantage of it. Reasons for blocked creativity can range from the physical and metaphysical to the emotional and spiritual. For every reason we have to create, there seems to be five reasons to put it off. From the mundane day-to-day tasks that require our attention to deep rooted emotional damage, anything that keeps us from expressing ourselves creatively can be detrimental to our growth. It’s vital for our well-being to overcome obstacles and create in spite of it all. Emotional roadblocks are a leading cause of creative distress. Before I learned to identify and overcome these energy sappers, I sometimes found myself one sentence into an article I needed to finish with no words to fill the page. Fortunately, there are many ways to get through your creative blocks and move on. Once you have found a few effective ways to woo your muse, you’ll find

Spiritual Horoscope 13
May Horoscope Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Happy birthday, Taurus! There’s extra power in your words and thoughts! Make a list of changes you wish to happen within yourself and in your life. Write affirmations about those shifts. Meditate on each one and truly feel what it’ll be like when they occur. Don’t feel selfish asking the Universe for your desires. When you’re happy, more energy radiates from you to bless others! Also, be aware of being irritated. It’s likely you need to set clearer boundaries and higher standards with others. Do it firmly, yet kindly. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) This is a great money month! If things aren’t flowing, meditate on your beliefs. Do you have negative thoughts about finances? Do you set limits on your abundance by thinking you don’t deserve it, or that it’s not possible for you? Trust knowledgeable people to help you streamline your spending to pay off debts, create some savings, and even small investments! Marinate your mind in books about prosperity and spirituality, and let the blessings into your life! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Mars moves into your sign, which happens once every two years, filling you with enthusiasm and energy! Have the courage to try new things, even if it’s changing your hair or fashion style. You’re a creature of habit, so outer changes actually reflect deeper spiritual shifts. If relationships are blocked, examine your value system. Do partnerships reflect your beliefs and standards? Declare what you want with confidence. Worthwhile connections evolve. Ones that need to go will end. New people attracted to you will align with your heart! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You’ll have great breakthroughs and advancements at work this month! Even though you’ll be busy, make sure to take care of yourself properly. Eat healthy meals, and don’t skip any. Practice deep breathing or yoga. Treat your body (and mind!) to a massage. In meditation, don’t be alarmed if old anger surfaces. View this as your
heart cleansing “stuff” that’s been blocking your vital energy. Allow the feelings to arise without attaching a huge story to them. Do some journal writing if needed, then tear it up or burn it. You are free! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You work hard and worry so much, Virgo! For May and June, focus on being playful, developing hobbies, and having fun with friends. Also explore new spiritual avenues like a different form of meditation or yoga. Maybe you’d like to visit a church or temple. Just don’t make personal growth your new “job.” Keep your mind curious and open. You might like to ponder your past as a child. What made you stop being playful? When did you start to judge yourself harshly? Come to a place of healing with these experiences so you can let them go. Enjoy your balanced new self who “gets the job done,” but views enjoyment as valuable and empowering! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) This is a great month for career success! You’ll feel efficient and popular. It’s like everything you touch turns to gold! Keep up your daily meditation since it’s creating a clear line to your intuition. Financially, look into investments. Emotionally, relationships take steps towards more depth and trust. You might even explore Tantra, which merges sex and the spirit. Practice positive thoughts about body image. Praise your body for all the magic and power within it. It’s almost an addiction to pick on your form. Get “sober,” and
your internal life will be incredibly serene! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You can begin an incredible relationship, or a current partnership renews in a surprising way! Keys to success are clear communication, and taking action with common values and interests. For instance, practice yoga or meditation together and inspire each other by discussing your spiritual growth. It’s vital for you to trust someone before opening up. Examine yourself to see if you hold onto old betrayals that inhibit your heart opening in the present moment. Let go and believe people can truly love you! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) This is a great time for financial breakthroughs! Find a trusted person to go over your finances with you. You can quickly find ways to resolve debt and create savings, while also living with “wise abundance.” Curtailing spending doesn’t have to be miserable! If partnered, this new money plan opens doors to deeper trust and even more sexiness! Also, find unique health practices. Maybe try juicing, intermittent fasting, or a new style of bodywork. You’ll feel empowered and vitalized. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Meditate on how your harsh critique of yourself limits how close you allow others to get to you. A new relationship can be starting, or even a long-term partnership can revitalize in amazing ways, but only if you see yourself clearly. Write down your strengths, your level of integrity, your loyalty, not to mention your fabulous dry humor! You’ve spent years focused on your flaws, so now “obsess” about your wonderful qualities to create balance in your psyche and in your heart. Observe how people respond to you, whether your friends, kids, co-workers, even pets. They adore and respect you, so adore and respect yourself! Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You can start a great new job, or feel excited about a current one. It’s also fun to start a new health regime, even if it’s just praising your body in your meditation time.

Blessing this incredible “machine” you live in creates joy and vitality! You’ll also find it easier to let go of old childhood “issues” that have bogged you down for years. It almost seems silly to carry such a heavy burden when you can just simply put it down and walk forward lightened up and unencumbered. Phew! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Research how much gratitude changes your brain chemistry and your immune system. With the new science of epigenetics, you can even change your DNA by shifting your thinking! Take these intellectual concepts to your heart and live them out. Carefully selecting your words and thoughts help you craft a new life filled with joy. You’ll see solutions to tough problems and build resilience with life stressors. Hang out with friends who reflect your beliefs so they can lift you up again when you get into old patterns. Aries (March 21 – April 19) If you’re feeling blocked at work, don’t vent about your frustrations with gossip or grumpiness. Meditate on how your supervisors or the “system” at your job mirrors issues with your parents or family of origin. It sounds bizarre, but huge breakthroughs happen in your mind and in your outer world when you have that “ah ha” moment! You can even get a promotion or a brand new job that moves you away from the difficult characters. Also, financial abundance is in order, so get ready to receive!
