Publisher’s Letter...

Contents Dear Friend,

While I have never traveled to what is traditionally considered a sacred site, I have experienced sacred moments during my travels. Last year, I spent more than 200 hours on the train traveling parts of the Southwest and Southeastern U.S.; but, it was off the beaten rail that I found what was sacred to me. Traveling from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, NM, rather than taking Amtrak’s direct route, I took the New Mexico Rail Runner commuter train. Because the train travels through Tribal Reservations, Right before boarding the cameras aren’t allowed. The view outside was Rail Runner in Santa Fe, NM. picture-worthy, for sure, but the view inside the train was what inspired me to take mental pictures. The passengers were in stark contrast to the opulence I’d just left in Santa Fe. Many Native Americans take the Rail Runner each day to sell their handcrafted items on the Plaza at the Santa Fe Indian Market. I studied the man next to me. His weathered hands. His worn boots. His quiet exhaustion. I watched as he stared out the window and wondered what he was thinking: Was it about that night’s dinner? Or perhaps recounting his day’s work? I, in contrast, sat with five pieces of luggage, taking up the space of four travelers...and was uncomfortably aware of my excesses. I watched as a woman who looked to be near 100 sat in a wheelchair and dozed throughout the journey. There was a weariness in the air that touched me. And I knew I was blessed to have this unplanned, authentic journey through life in New Mexico. Sometimes the sacred comes just from getting a chance to actually observe, and take a mental snapshot of, the lives of others. Our theme this month focuses on Sacred Journeys. I believe a sacred journey can be metaphorical of our path through this lifetime; and, it can also be a literal exploration of a sacred area. Or, as Jude LaClaire’s article illustrates this month, a sacred journey can be found as close to home as creating a sacred place in the mind. I hope you enjoy this special issue on the expansion of sacred journeys.

Journey to Wholeness

The Safe Place is the Sacred Space-Find It!

W

hen I ask people about their safe place many describe a place outdoors by a stream, the ocean, or in a wood or meadow. Often it is a place they have visited at one time in their lives or a place they can visit often. People make pilgrimages to special places to pray, to be inspired, to touch the spiritual in the special physical space. In my life I have found special places in the environment that feel special, safe, and, often, sacred. I have been on pilgrimages as well. I will be visiting some of these places as you may be reading this. I will be in Colorado, in the Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone Park and Mount Rushmore. Most of these places are special to me and some will be a first time visit. However we are not always able to travel to these special places in nature. So, what can we do to find the safe place that may become our sacred space? Since the brain is a marvelous organ that is versatile and flexible, it offers us a viable free alternative. When a sensory experience is registered the message travels through neural pathways to different centers of the brain. The amazing thing is that when we imagine this experience, the images travel the same neural pathways, lighting up the same parts of the brain as when we actually have the experience. Imagining something is very nearly as good as being there. With traumatic memories, this is not a good experience, and we work to release those memories. However, we can recall or create pleasant experiences by using our imagination. So, even if you cannot travel to your physical safe place, you can get there via your imagination. This is a very reasonably priced trip! How can we do this? The brain is designed cyclically to go to the brain rhythm associated with imagery, dreams, meditation or hypnosis, called alpha-theta brain wave state. The Ultradian rhythm of the brain is the 90 to 120 minute brain cycle. Once curing this cycle we got

BY JUDE LACLAIRE, PH.D.

into the alpha-theta BW cycle. Ernest Ross, Ph.D. in The 20 Minute Break: Using the New Science of Ultradian Rhythms calls this 20-minute period, “The Ultradian Healing Response.” This is the time to find a place in which we feel safe and can create the sacred place. The

Let me suggest that you find a time once or twice a day to take this 20-minute break. Taking deep diaphragmatic breaths, breathing out twice as long as you breathe in, will take you to this BW state. If you do not have a structured mode of imagery or meditation, there are many guided imagery sessions available free online or that can be purchased. I usually give people a CD of guided imagery sessions that I created to help them find the safe place. There are also many books on the topic of guided imagery and mindfulness meditation that are helpful. Hopefully, with practice, you will find yourself taking the deep breath throughout the day, even when you cannot take twenty minutes, to pause, self-calm and go to your safe place and sacred space. You will discover that finding the safe, calm space internally connects you with the eternal now moment, the spiritual center of Life. Make the internal trip often and you will find yourself energized, refreshed and feeling so much better for taking the break.

“Imagining something is very nearly as good as being there.” recent popularity of mindfulness meditation is a tool, among many others, to help us find the sacred within ourselves. We frequently disrupt this cycle with stimulating substances like caffeine, sugar or nicotine or we override it with activities. This can not only have very negative short-term and long-term effects on our physical and mental health but it can deprive us of this wonderful cycle in which we can naturally find the safe place and create the sacred experience.

ike Hursey knows all about hospitality. As a gourmet chef, Mike wields his talent with assurance at Casa Somerset where he and his wife, Christine, own a guest retreat. Nestled in the rolling hills of Paola, Casa Somerset makes the most of its bucolic surroundings. “Because Mike and I love to travel, particularly to Italy, we modeled our bed and breakfast after visiting Casa Caponetti, just north of Rome,” says Christine. But you don’t have to travel all that far to indulge the senses. Casa Somerset is only 45 minutes from downtown Kansas City. Christine tends to the front of the house, meeting and greeting guests, and bakes the retreat’s signature focaccia. The back of the house, including a spread of approximately 11 lusciously planted acres, is Mike’s domain. Here’s where the organic gardens overflow with bushels of organic produce that are almost too pretty to eat. Mike’s evolution as a chef and host followed an interesting path. “During my first trip to Italy in 1995, I was introduced to Slow Food and its mission to support small producers. Every day we went to the market to buy the freshest ingredients and talk to the small producers. Over the years, I have learned more and more of the importance of having chemical-free food. We believe in using local foods as often as possible to create meals you will long remember,” says Mike.

He proudly rattles off his crops that eventually star in his recipes. “I’m a certified beekeeper with eight beehives, 15 varieties of hardneck garlic, 160 heirloom tomato plants, mint, beds of horseradish and asparagus along with Ark of Taste Lettuces. (The Ark of Taste is an international catalogue of endangered heritage foods maintained by the global Slow Food movement.)” Amidst all of the goodness, Mike highlights the edibles with 100 peonies and 750 day lilies. With such a yield, it’s little wonder that Casa Somerset is 24 Carrot certified for sustainable practices by Cultivate KC and the KC Food Circle. Using Crystals for Balance and Energy BY SUZETTE SCHOLTES

S

ome people think of crystals as jewelry without much interest in their spiritual properties. Others, like me, hold a collection of crystals for various reasons. The two crystals which neither accumulate nor hold negative energy are kyanite and citrine, the ones I use the most. The best resource for crystal knowledge is Love is in the Earth by Melody (no last name), a 709-page book describing the spiritual properties of the mineral kingdom. I often hold two hunks of kyanite as this gem aligns the chakras and subtle bodies, bringing tranquility and a calming effect to the whole being. It is an exceptional stone for meditative states. The rapid transfers of energy from kyanite create pathways where none existed before. Like a universal bridge, it is an extraordinary crystal of connection, opening the mind, enhancing psychic abilities, bridging gaps in all communication efforts, and providing a link for transmitting or receiving healing energy. [Melody, 363-364] This blue stone inspires loyalty and fair treatment to others. It assists in working through disagreements and disputes, and can aid in repairing damaged relationships. It is beneficial in negotiations, diplomatic missions, and arbitration, allowing disparate energies to move into resonance and find a common frequency. Citrine is a premier stone of manifestation, imagination, and personal will. Carrying the power of the sun, it is warm and comforting, energizing and life giving. It stimulates the chakras like the sunlight of spring, clearing the mind and stirring the soul to action. Its frequency awakens creativity and imagination and sustains the process of transforming dreams and wishes into tangible form. With its pure energy, citrine encourages fullness of life, fresh beginnings, and new pursuits. Citrine does not hold or accumulate negative energy but rather transmutes, dissipates, and grounds it, making it extremely protective for the environment. It works out problems on

Sparkling yellow-tone, citrine attracts wealth, according to Melody. It encourages generosity and sharing of your good. I carry one in my purse. It attracts love and happiness and guards against those who may break your heart. It cannot hold fear. Anyone who asks me to hold healing for them writes out their “intent.” I place it under a huge citrine tower and it’s amazing how many dreams and/or healings come true. Way back in the 80’s, I was in a meeting with 12 or so workers and the topic of crystals came up. Half of the group reached into their pockets or purses and pulled out a crystal! I was astounded that those wearing their suits and ties shared such open minds toward crystals. Some people use them for decoration. The stone may “shut down” without the correct respect to the stones. Other than these two I write about, all other crystals need to be cleaned on a regular basis.

There are various cleansing rituals. I was taught to place them in water, maybe with a drop of lavender, and let them soak. I use a pendulum to read when the stone wishes to come out of the bath. My sister has drawers filled with jewelry from a life-long collection of pearls, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and diamonds. These are crystals and they make her happy. Why not?

magine a 21,000 foot mountain covered with shimmering blue-white glaciers. Think of people struggling up this mountain over the centuries to pay homage to the powerful deities that reside there. Your first thought might be of ancient pilgrimages in the Himalayas. Yet, a similar tradition exists in South America—the Andean Spiritual Cosmology. Maestros (teachers) in this pre-Inca cosmology have guided pilgrims and apprentices in ceremony and pilgrimage for thousands of years and continue to do so today. The principles of Ayni (reciprocity), balance, and harmony with Pachamama (Mother Earth) have always been basic to life in the remote Quechua villages of the Andes. Prayer and ceremony are intertwined with the daily struggle for survival at 15,000-17,000 feet.

As dusk fell, the temperature dropped and dark clouds gathered around Sawasiray. Adolfo, an altomisayok, knew a blizzard was imminent. He voiced his concern then disappeared over a hill. Two hours later, when he reappeared, the clouds had completely dispersed and hundreds of stars twinkled in the cold night. We were excited to see the Southern Cross for the first time! Later, Adolfo told us he had done a ceremony to change the weather, because he feared our group would be trapped in several feet of snow. exhilaration became a deep sense of sacred presence and for the rest of the day I had no desire to speak. Since then, Ausangate has been a protector in my travels and a benefactor in my life. For the local people who live near this mountain, he is a great deity who cares for them and their animals. Despachos (ceremonial gifts) are made regularly for Ausangate by the local paqos to insure fertility of the llamas and alpacas and health for the people. One afternoon, my group had gone ahead, and I found myself hiking alone on Ausangate. Suddenly, dozens of alpacas streamed over the ridge and down into the valley. They were about twenty feet from me, moving quickly down the steep slope. White and brown mother alpacas and their babies ran by without noticing me. I was enthralled with watching their adorable furry faces and graceful movements. Then, I realized I could not hear them. I thought perhaps the wind was carrying their hoofbeats in another direction but then noticed the air wasn’t moving.

I became aware of a vast stillness. My ears strained to hear sounds, but I was completely enveloped in sacred silence. The animals seemed filled with the same immensity of silence. I recalled a story I had heard from a Quechua villager. He said, “Ausangate not only protects llamas and alpacas, he creates them.” That day on the ridge, I felt I was witnessing the creation of a huge herd of magical alpacas whose hooves made no sound as they ran. Year after year, I return to the Peruvian Andes. The magic draws me back, and the sweet generosity of the Quechua people teaches me how to live on Pachamama in Ayni. I know I will always be a pilgrim in these mountains. Carol Parker, Ph.D. is an eco-therapist and wilderness guide. Experience Mother Nature's Energy in Sacred Sedona

H

aving the pleasure of journeying to the Southwest, to a sacred spot of amazing energetics with five dear likehearted friends, pales only in comparison to the vast sacredness held in Sedona, Arizona. However you make it to Sedona, do be certain to add this destination to your bucket list. I have been to Sedona many times and during many phases of personal development and soul awareness. Yet the journey I took to Sedona with my five friends most recently brought with it a whole new appreciation of the powerful energies of Mother Earth that arise, meld with the energies on her crust, and reach with open arms to the Sun. While Sedona in general is very energetic, there can be various energies to “sort through” upon arrival. As a practice, my friends and I have learned to allow about two days adjusting and discerning – especially for you sensitive, open, empathic souls out there. To experience the depth of Sedona, the true Mother Earth energies, it helps to “work through” the tourist energy, the various spiritual energies, and gain your bearings to support your personal experience. Trust yourself to successfully “feel it out” – this guidance comes from within you. Once you have your bearings and your inner compass is clear and activated, there are four vortexes that should not be missed! Each vortex has a unique life force and energy. While I’ll share how my friends and I experienced them, I

encourage everyone to tune into the vortexes on a personal level to uncover the messages and connection that Mother Earth is co-creating with you. Our first stop was the Airport Vortex, where we encountered the Masculine energetics of the natural male. The vortex stands proud, confident, grateful and strong, just like a naturally empowered man whose vision is vast. There is a trail that wraps all around the airport. While it is not for the faint of heart, walking the trail can bring great focus. We chose to travel this trail methodically, mindfully, with every step being conscious action. In this way, the masculine came to life within us women. I have never been more grateful to Mother Earth as she was sharing this masculinity for me to experience in my female expression. It felt as if I was transformed into the energy of a proud warrior Chief with the wisdom of the ages. The next stop in our journey was to the Red Rock Crossing/Cathedral Rock Vortex which held for us the Feminine energetics of the natural female. Earlier visits here found me walking straight up the edge of the mountain – wear good shoes and bring lots of water for this hike! However, my friends and I took the time to enter through Crescent Moon Park area, wind our way through Buddha Beach, and approach Cathedral rock from the West. This vortex is sensitive, yet strong, quiet, yet deafening. The complexity of the feminine permeates through every trail. Exploring these

energies and the various hiking trails was relaxing and comforting. We took time to pause more often and tend to our self-care, just like a natural woman honors herself, her physicality, and her expression. We took pause to notice not only the twisted junipers, but the small frog by the river, the color of each stone – diverse and connected. Third, we agreed to explore Boynton Canyon Vortex, the vortex of balance between masculine and feminine. As we entered Boynton Canyon trail for our hike, we noticed it quickly became straight and even narrow in places, like walking a natural tightrope. This effect encouraged us to bring forth both the masculine and feminine energies of the first two vortexes we explored and dance with them together in our heart-soul Images courtesy of Stephanie Forcier essence. To top it off, somewhere in the distance a Native American flute was calling to us with a sweet and Mother Earth, we enjoyed moments of intriguing melody. How fortunate we were silence. Spiritual Horoscope

September 2016 Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Happy birthday,Virgo! This’ll be an amazing birth year filled with prosperity! The more you meditate and open your mind, the more space you make for abundance to flow in. Connect with positive-minded friends who uplift you and support your sense of expansion and possibility. Dream big and don’t censor anything with doubt, criticism, or lack of worthiness! The Universe wants to fulfill you, so let it! Image licensed by Ingram Images

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Abundant, joyous Jupiter moves into your sign for twelve months! This is the start of a new twelve year cycle of spiritual, romantic, emotional, financial, and personal fulfillment! Meditate daily to visualize what your life will be like. Your dreams are waiting for you to call them into reality! Trust your intuition too, since it is very “on” right now! Working with forgiveness clears out even more room for the good stuff.

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Jupiter begins working with your subconscious mind, helping you forgive and heal old struggles, even from past lives. Meditate on self-forgiveness too, and make it your spiritual practice to be compassionate to yourself, even if you think it is wimpy! Open up to new friends and activities that are just pure fun. Give yourself a break and enjoy life so that “issues” will heal effortlessly.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) You can have awesome breakthroughs at work. You might get a surprising bonus or promotion. Or you might connect with a true soul friend through your job who becomes very dear to you. Your social life will flourish and you’ll be able to balance work and play. The New Moon eclipse early this month renews

your spiritual passion and might also bring travel opportunities. Enjoy!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Pluto turns direct in your sign, unleashing tremendous power to overcome fears and limitations and to achieve your goals! Jupiter moves into Libra for a one year stay, creating a once in a twelve year high point for career. The sky’s the limit in all areas of your life! You can also release old childhood traumas or negative thought patterns and rewire your brain for joy and fulfillment. Don't give up, because it is possible!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) The New Moon eclipse opens you to a new depth of trust, intimacy, and sexuality. You live in your head, but energies this month help you to be present in your body, experience the moment with joy and feel “real.” You’re able to let go of old emotional hang-ups and fears. You’ll also have a resurgence in your spiritual life and feel a true loving partnership with the Universe! Nurture that relationship with extra meditation and gratitude. You’re a beloved member of the planetary family and you’ll finally feel that in your core!

EVOLVING…IN KANSAS CITY

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Like your Aquarius friends, you’ll have deep healing in relationships and intimacy. You’ll also have an amazing flow of prosperity from surprising areas or circumstances! Just allow everything to be new. Practice seeing life with new eyes and come from a new heart. Reconnect with old friends who you’ve been “too busy” for and you’ll gain even a higher level of support and love!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) You don’t have to push for success. Just allow results of your hard work to roll in! Career stress and romantic issues unravel and start to flow. You can meet a new partner if single. If already connected, your bond will heal and blossom. Work wise, challenge people to get off your back and let you express your power and talents. Your health also improves since stress will melt away.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You’ll be in a cheerful frame of mind as your faith in the Universe is restored! It’s been a tough year and a half and now you’ll feel safe in the world, embraced in love and re-connected to your guidance. Your health improves because you’re under less stress and your body can repair itself instead of deal with crises. Spending time with pets can be very uplifting and healing.

13

September 2016

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Your mind and heart have been cleared of old blockages that inhibit intimacy. Your spiritual efforts to heal are paying off and you’ll have blessings in your current relationship if partnered. If single, a wonderful new bond can start with someone who is part of your improved and expanded consciousness! Also, face financial issues head-on and they will resolve in fast, surprising ways!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Positive thinking and “quantum imagining” creates breakthroughs for you! Don’t be shy about meditating on the “impossible” since many options are open right now! Long-standing relationship issues can heal and even old childhood traumas. Believe it and you can live it! See yourself in the healed reality, even if it’s like watching a fanciful movie. Also, if you want to move, you can find an amazing house to live in that represents the new you. Ditto for job opportunities!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Creative money ideas can spring into your mind or finances can come from surprising sources! Read prosperity books and apply the principles for even more abundance. Pluto moves direct, bringing breakthroughs in health issues that seem “permanent.” You can also make new friends who are positive and fun. You might even heal with a sibling and the relationship will blossom like it never has before.
