Dear Animal Lovers, I have a new friend named Bear. He came into my life at a time when I especially needed a friend. After my youngest daughter had her baby in October I realized I missed having someone to nurture. I knew I wanted a Labrador, but figured it would take a while to find the right one. The first day I looked in the classifieds, the first ad I looked at, was for Bear. He had been abandoned and was bone skinny. His nails were so long he looked like he was walking on tiptoes. I knew he was the one.

15 Cuddle a Critter and Call Me in the Morning

We were both leery at first. I’m somewhat a loner by nature so it was an adjustment. And Bear needed time to learn to trust. I decided to put my mothering instincts to work and started cooking homemade meals for Bear. He loved them, I loved having someone to cook for, and he put on weight quickly. Now, a few months later, I can’t imagine life without Bear. As I work at my desk, he snores serenely by my feet. Riding in the car, I’ve noticed other drivers chuckling as he licks my ear from the backseat (small car, big dog). When I rub his belly and he grunts with unadulterated pleasure, I know I am blessed to have him in my life. Our relationship isn’t complicated like human relationships can be; he loves me as much as I love him.

16 Journey with Your Totem Animal(s)

Pets are like that. And there are so many benefits to having one: reduced stress, a reason to exercise, improved mood, decreased blood pressure and unconditional love. This issue has articles not only on pets and their benefits, but on the entire animal world. There are articles by two veterinarians, an article on alternative healing methods for pets and an article on finding your totem animal. Enjoy! I think I’ll go take Bear for a walk.

Communiversity’s Wholistic Health Fair The energy pulsing out of the double doors into Pierson Auditorium is palpable. Once through the doors, the intrepid visitor is swept up in a swirl of color, sound and healing vibes: tie-dye hangings from The Herb Shop adorn the walls while a soft djembe beat seems to echo the patterns on the fabric. This is UMKC/Communiversity’s Wholistic Health Fair, an annual event since 1999 where a plethora of alternative-health practitioners gather to share their knowledge, experience and philosophies with the public. The very first Wholistic Health Fair, held in the Spring of 1990, was the brainchild of Communiversity employee Jo Bonewits. Years ago, she was inspired to “give people in the community an event where they could find out about holistic health practices to better direct their own research and resources.” Her idea was that instead of throwing yourself down on a table and saying, “Heal me,” you could be an active participant in your own healing. That first health fair boasted twenty booths and twentyfive workshops. This March, Communiversity will host over 60 exhibitors and

Where: UMKC’s University Center When: Sunday, March 14th from 11:00 AM until 6 PM For more info: Call 816-235-1448, or visit www.umkc.edu/commu 20 workshops. Richard Mende, founder of the Gaura Haré Institute, has been helping out and exhibiting at the Fair since 1999. His take: “The Wholistic Health Fair is a happening. The semi-annual event is a cacophony of sights and sounds, representing a vast variety of healing modalities—from spiritual approaches such as Bhakta Yoga to well-known alternative applications such as acupuncture, chiropractic and herbs. And each year there are always a few new surprises to look forward to.” Barbara Criswell, owner of Aquarius, is a regular exhibitor at the fair. She is especially impressed with the noncommercial nature of the gathering and the sense of community the fair inspires. “People come to the Communiversity Health Fair as a way to enhance and expand their lives, not out of a sense of neediness. That’s why I enjoy it so much and participate every year.” In addition to the many exhibitors at the fair, they offer some great workshops at a bargain price. You can take three workshops for $5 if you pre-register by calling Communiversity. Workshops include: Bee Sting Therapy, Feng Shui, Stress Management, Peruvian Shamanism, Energy Medicine and much more.

The workshops offer participants a chance to enhance their knowledge and ask questions of the presenters. The reader might wonder, “Why does Communiversity offer this admissionfree fair?” A look at our history reveals that Communiversity began in the aftermath of the turbulent ‘60’s. The mission statement of this fledgling educational experiment, in the words of its founder, was to “transcend the definition of education which claims that it can be bought, or that a bundle of A’s guarantees it. Curiosity, imagination and a deep desire to take responsibility for one’s learning are the only requirements” (Alice Lawler, 1970). Since the fall of 1970, Communiversity has succeeded through the generosity and commitment of hundreds of conveners and thousands of participants. Non-credit classes have been offered, for a nominal fee, to change society, enhance yourself or just for fun. No one knows what the next trend will be, but chances are, someone will soon teach it through Communiversity. Communiversity is a great venue for anyone wishing to share a skill or an idea with others without the hassle of publicizing the workshop, registering people and finding a location. All those willing to learn, as well as those willing to teach, will find a special place in Communiversity to mingle and exchange ideas. You can find Richard, Barbara and the Communiversity staff and an array of innovative health concepts on the top floor of UMKC’s University Center on Sunday, March 14th from 11:00 AM until 6 PM. Twenty workshops will offer the health fair attendee new ways of dealing with physical and spiritual issues, while over sixty exhibitors will introduce their products, know-how and services. Call 816-235-1448, pick up a catalog of upcoming classes and the show guide at any public library or visit our website www.umkc.edu/commu for more information.

Interview with Donna Eden By Liz Brown Energy Medicine Pioneer Donna Eden is one of the most sought-after and authoritative teachers in the field of holistic healing. We caught up with her recently by phone, in advance of her first visit to Kansas City in almost 10 years. Here's what she had to say: As one of the Pioneers in the field of Energy Medicine why are people all over the world so motivated to learn more about their personal energy system? It wasn’t that long ago that we left our own natural healing roots. The important news is that everybody can learn to do this for themselves. This is your birthright; we’ve just forgotten. In our culture we’ve let it slip away because we go for doctors and pharmaceutical medicines. To recapture this is far more than healing, because energy is about everything in this world. None of us is even solid; we are energy. We are lattice works of force fields. If something’s not right, usually you’ve gotten on a different wavelength. One of the best things that happened to me personally is that Western medicine gave up on me and I had to heal myself. And that’s what I see a lot. It’s true that people are living longer, but in what condition? We want to live joyfully, happily, and be of our own rhythm… to find our energy rhythm and turn on our own energetic healer. How did we get so out of touch with understanding the importance of Energy Medicine? We’re simply not in sync—with our lifestyle, with foods and with unnatural foods. The world we evolved for ceased to exist about 100 years ago. It’s no longer here. It took us millions of years to evolve in sync with our planet. Our bodies didn’t evolve for millions of years around microwave ovens. People have got to get their bodies stronger because every square inch of our atmosphere is filled up with manmade energies and radiation now. So we better learn to be able to adapt. One of the reasons we have auto-immune illnesses is because people can’t adapt. We are not in the world we evolved to live in. So I think of energy medicine as an important evolver of us. Can you share an example of one of your techniques? The simplest thing I teach is a fiveminute routine that covers about seven little exercises that you put together. And it teaches your body several things, like how to get all the meridians to flow in the right direction and in harmony with you, so that all the cell communications start

to open up. And then if your energies are moving backward, how to move forward. If you’re feeling scrambled and crazed, how to get your stress levels down. Is learning how to use what you teach complicated or take a lot of time? You don’t have to spend tons of time working on yourself. Twice each day with this five-minute routine. And if you have something in particular that you’re dealing with, I’d add a couple of things, like what to do if you’re really depressed; there’s an exercise for that. I give a lot of things about how to get out of depression and how to get your vitality back, your aliveness back, how to sharpen your memory, how to strengthen your immune system, how to get your body back. All of these things you can do yourself or to someone else. You’ve been so generous sharing ‘how-to’ information on your website (innersource.net) and on YouTube. What makes your workshop experience different? People are going to learn these things and experience it in their own body. It won’t be like viewing something. This is very experiential. They will be very involved. And people will find that THEY can do these things. I am not the miracle worker. It’s all about working with your own natural healing vibes. On Friday evening, March 12, Donna Eden presents an audience participation introduction to Energy Medicine, followed by an all-day experiential workshop on Saturday, March 13. See ad on page 2 or Calendar of Events listing for more details. Tickets at www.CornerstoneFoundation.com or (816) 561-1627.

Sheila Dodson, DVM

My handyman finished our root cellar just in time to stock it up with winter squash. We are only now eating the last of them. He built it pretty much verbatim from Root Cellaring: Natural Cold Storage of Fruits and Vegetables by Mike and Nancy Bubel. During the single-digit cold spell, we suspect the cellar temperature dipped below freezing in some spots. The acorn squash on an upper shelf molded all at once after the weather warmed. Otherwise, the temperature was easily maintained by opening or closing the PVC pipe ventilation system. A digital thermometer mounted on the outer wall allowed me to easily check the temperature without opening the door. It was cool as most refrigerators, 38 – 45 degrees. I quickly learned that most leafy and root vegetables stay fresher longer inside a plastic bag. Otherwise, they dried out in a week. Turnips from before the December freeze are still delicious. Bulk nuts and dried fruit are keeping very well there as well. The biggest treat was the canned vegetables. Despite warnings of botulism and salmonella, I proceeded to put up tomatoes, tomato sauce, bitter melon, green beans and pesto. I am still here happy and healthy. The recipes from Preserving Food without Freezing or Canning by the Gardeners and Farmers of Terre Vivante, an ecological research and education center in southeastern France served me well. The book deliberately ignores energy-intensive freezing and hightemperature canning in favor of centuries-old methods that maintain and enhance the life of the food: preserving in the ground or cellar, drying, lacto-fermentation, sweet and sour preserves, preserving in oil, vinegar, salt, sugar and alcohol. The recipes are simple and are for small quantities, not bushels. This works for the produce I get from my small garden, CSA and farmer’s market. Most of the recipes suggest keeping canned goods in a cool place. The root cellar was perfect for this. I tried several different methods. Salting clearly wasn’t for me. The

Salting clearly wasn’t for me. The food kept well but it was too salty for my taste. My favorites were tomatoes in oil and lacto-fermented tomato sauce. food kept well but it was too salty for my taste. My favorites were tomatoes in oil and lacto-fermented tomato sauce. Fermentation was super easy, no stove required. Simply crush the tomatoes in a stoneware pot. Once they start fermenting, usually in a day or two, stir them once a day. When it stops bubbling, the fermentation has stopped. This takes 5 – 7 days. Rather than strain the sauce, I processed it in my Vita-Mix. Add one to two tablespoons salt per quart, bottle in quart jars and top with ¾ inch of oil. Cover loosely with a lid. Remove the oil before using. The sauce and tomatoes in oil together made awesome tomato soup. Here’s a sketch of the recipe. Sauté an onion until translucent, add chopped garlic and heaping teaspoon of fennel seed. Strain the oil off the tomatoes and add the tomatoes to the pot. Pour the oil off the sauce and add the sauce to the pot. Add 1/3 cup cashews and 4 cups water and simmer for 20 minutes. Puree in a blender, adjust seasonings and serve. Yum! Bethany Klug is a physician for whom food is a doorway to personal, community and planetary health. journey to wholeness

All My Relations By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. Chief Seattle Mitakuye Oyasin The Lakota people use the phrase “mitakuye oyasin”—we are all related, to describe the universal connection among all living things. Watching the movie Avatar, I was reminded of the beauty of the kinship between animals and humans. The Na’vi people on the planet Pandora live in harmony with the plants, trees and animals. It was awesome to watch as a Na’vi energetically connected by placing the end of her braid with an “energy outlet” on the Banshee, a birdlike creature that bonds with only one Na’vi in a lifetime. The growing popularity of Therapy and Service Dogs is an example of the mutually beneficial relationship between humans and animals. Dogs help people who are sight-impaired, wheelchair bound or have other physical limitations. The presence of these animals brings great joy and better health for everyone from toddlers to seniors. I have always been amazed that dogs can be trained to anticipate a seizure before it happens and help their owner be safe and protected during the seizure. There was a widely publicized story about a cat in a nursing home that seemed to know when people were preparing to die and would go to their room to keep a vigil. There are many stories of an animal sensing threat and taking steps to protect or remove a person from harm. Many of us watched with admiration as the “The March of the Penguins” moms and dads lovingly and constantly cared for their eggs and then their tiny offspring. “The Story of the Weeping Camel” is an enchanting film about a family of herders in the Mongolian Gobi region. When the mother camel rejects her calf after a difficult birth her keepers perform a ritual with folk music and chanting, eliciting deep emotion, causing the mother camel to weep real tears, then allowing her calf to suckle. There is a mounting body of evidence that animals have emotions similar to humans. Marc Bekoff in The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow and Empathy and Why They Matter says, “I’ve tackled a wide rage of questions, dealing with everything from social behavior, social organization, and social development to communication, play, antipredatory behavior, aggression, parental

behavior and morality. To me, the evidence for animal emotion is impossible to deny, and is widely supported by our current knowledge in animal behavior, neurobiology, and evolutionary biology.” It has become clear to me in listening to the stories of people’s lives for nearly 40 years that many people would not be alive and, certainly not very emotionally healthy, had it not been for their special animal friend. One very depressed young woman told me about her cruel and unstable stepfather who had sexually and emotionally abused her. Her only solace was to ride and train her horse. During her healing process she called upon the spirit and energy of the horse friends who had comforted and protected her during those painful times. Jane Goodall, a world-renowned primatologist, helped us to understand more about our relationship to animals by studying chimpanzees, our closest animal relative, for thirty years in Gombe. She defied the scientific convention by giving the chimps names instead of numbers, insisting on the validity of her observation that animals have distinct personalities, minds and emotions. At the age of 76 she continues to educate the world about animals, the environment and ecology through the Jane Goodall Institute which has 19 offices around the world and Roots & Shoots, a global youth program with 10,000 groups in 100 countries. She is a wonderful model for us about what we can do to acknowledge the debt of gratitude we owe our animal friends. Think about what animals have done for you in your lifetime and then ask yourself what you are doing for them. The words of Chief Seattle help us to understand this essential relationship. This we know: All things are connected like the blood that unites us. We did not weave the web of life, We are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. Evolving ...

March makes me think of St. Patrick’s Day, which makes me think of the color green… and that makes me think about greens. Green vegetables are the most important element in our diet, yet most people don’t eat nearly enough of them. Sure, you may have a salad here and a serving of green beans there, but there are just so many varieties of green vegetables to choose from! To be as healthy as possible, it’s important to eat a wide range of greens and not just standard lettuce. Choices include broccoli, arugula, green peppers, asparagus, bok choy, napa cabbage, kale, collards, watercress, mustard greens, dandelion greens and other dark leafy vegetables. Your goal should be to eat 2-3 cups of greens every day. Greens are very high in calcium, calcium magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamins A, C, and K. Greens are also one of the best possible sources of fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll (so healing and good for the immune system!) and micronutrients. And phytochemicals are found in green veggies—natural bioactive compounds that reduce the risk of cancer, high blood pressure and many other diseases, and seem to help slow the aging process. That’s not all, though! Greens help purify the blood, promote healthy intestinal flora, and improve circulation as well as liver, gall bladder, and kidney function. Green vegetables also strengthen the respiratory system and clear congestion in the lungs because they reduce the amount of mucous. So anyone with any type of respiratory health issue should be gobbling down the greens—as well as those who live in major and other areas where pollution and poor air quality is a concern. When you’re feeling tired or grumpy and thinking about reaching for a highcarb snack, try a bowl of dark leafy greens instead. All the good stuff in the greens will make you feel lighter and more energetic and will help lift your spirits. Western medicine will probably never embrace this concept, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if physicians first prescribed three cups of greens every day to treat depression—rather than assuming medication is the only answer? It’s important to know that certain greens should be eaten cooked rather than raw, because they are high in oxalic acid, which depletes calcium in bones and teeth and can lead to osteoporosis. These include spinach, beet greens, beets, chard, green peppers, and aspara-

gus. The oxalic acid is destroyed when these vegetables are cooked. Of course, an occasional spinach salad or raw green pepper is fine, but you shouldn’t eat these greens raw on a regular basis because the acid will interfere with your body’s ability to absorb calcium. There are lots of ways to cook greens. They can be steamed, boiled or sautéed in oil or water, for example. One of my favorite methods is called waterless cooking. Put the greens in a pan without water and cover it. The greens themselves produce enough water, once heated, to cook in. It’s terrific and so healthy! As a bonus, steaming makes greens fibrous and tight, so the body can’t completely break them down. This is excellent for the digestive system and helps with weight loss. Many leafy greens including kale, beet greens and mustard greens have a bitter taste. If that is keeping you from expanding your green veggie palate, believe me, I understand because I once felt that way, too. Even restaurants rarely get it right! But since they’re extremely good for you, please don’t give up. I experimented and found some very easy ways to cook them so they tasted fine. For example, cooking with garlic, shallots, tamari or olive oil can neutralize the taste. I promise that even the very bitter greens can taste sweet. To help you get started, I strongly recommend the book, Greens Glorious Greens: More than 140 Ways to Prepare All Those Great-Tasting, Beautiful Leafy Greens, by Johnna Albi. I challenge you to go green this month by increasing both the quantity and variety of greens in your diet. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel, even if you were already feeling pretty good! What a truly magnificent way to prepare for spring and warmer weather! Carmelita Davis-Beets is a natural healer and Holistic Nutrition Counselor living in Kansas City. in business

Mariposa Veterinary Center Negative public opinion can permanently damage a company. Businesses want a good reputation and relationship with the public. They strive to offer reliable quality products and provide excellent customer service. One consumer with a bad experience may not throw a business off course, but failing to manage even one relationship or allowing a growing number of negative experiences to occur, can bring a business to its knees. Once the public accepts an opinion as “the norm” a stereotype is formed. Whether resulting from a bad experience or from general consensus of a specific industry, such as debt collectors all being pushy and rude, a business must be aware of their stereotypes and implement measures to manage the potential affects. Being unique and innovative presents definite challenges for a business attempting to break “the norm”. Animal health care, for example, is an evolving profession which has its share of stereotypes. Humans have used animals for farming, food, transportation and companionship for thousands of years. As long as there has been a bond between humans and animals, there have been individuals, usually male, dedicated to animal health. Dr. Michelle Chappell, DVM CVA, became a veterinarian 20 years ago, specializing in surgical medicine. Her first hurdle was in being a female in a male-dominated field. On numerous occasions her patient’s human counterpart

would ask for a male doctor’s opinion or question her credentials. She overcame this challenge by taking the time to reassure her clients, explaining her surgical knowledge and ability instead of becoming defensive or dismissing their concerns. Interestingly, the next stereotype she faced was her own and overcoming it had a profound affect on her practice. Early veterinarians used holistic methods of healing to care for sick and injured animals until animal health became a formal science, producing highly-educated veterinarians who study animal anatomy, learn surgical techniques, diagnose and prescribe medication. Over the course of time, holistic methods were pushed aside and, for 300 years, medical preventative care had been the standard. In the 1980’s, holistic healing methods began to reemerge, but not without issue. Despite years of independent studies showing significant results in treating animal afflictions such as arthritis, anxiety, hair loss, diabetes, etc…, Dr. Chappell held fast to her strong scientific background. She, like most of the general public, viewed holistic animal healing as fanatical until she realized that conventional medicine had hopelessly failed to help her arthritic dog. Desperate to help her fourlegged companion, she turned to acupuncture as a last resort. To her amazement, the treatment worked and her dog regained full mobility.

Dr. Chappell’s personal experience changed her opinion and her practice. She now runs, Mariposa Veterinary Center, a “green” facility where conventional and non-conventional techniques are considered equally viable care solutions. Aware of the public’s view of animal holistic healing, she prepared to establish her practice as an innovative, full-service facility, dedicated to animal advocacy. She advertised in holistic magazines, attended health fairs, and implemented educational campaigns designed to reach the human population already embracing the benefits of holistic healing. More importantly, she shared her own story of disbelief and discovery. Although a large number of her patients come to her as a last resort, her two-year practice has seen an increase as a result of her approach to breaking down traditional paradigms. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), there are 61,000 highly-educated animal doctors providing conventional medical care to over 172,000,000 animal companions, counting everything from fish to horses. In Kansas City, there are less than a handful of nonconventional providers using techniques such as acupuncture, non-synthetic diets, chiropractics, and Reiki as part of their animal treatment practice. Although the animals are reaping the benefits, both conventional and non-conventional care givers face the common challenge of stereotypes.

Regardless of the industry, stereotypes exist and for a business to differentiate itself, it must first understand the consumer’s perspective and adopt a plan to communicate transparently. Unique, innovative businesses succeed because they are able to understand the consumer’s preconceptions, avoid dismissing a customer’s perception, and put more importance on demonstrating their understanding of how a good reputation is earned through actions and not words. living proof By Jill Dutton

Katie Dallam is a fighter. First as a boxer and now as a survivor. After sustaining a brain injury during a boxing match, Katie continues to fight daily for her recovery, using art as a tool. In December 1996, Katie took close to 140 blows during a match with Sumya Anani. After the fight, Katie passed out and was taken to the hospital. So much blood had accumulated on her brain, the doctors worried she wouldn’t make it through surgery. She did, but recovery has been a constant battle. Part of Katie’s recovery meant relearning what certain words meant. Her memory was affected and she labored with remembering words to go with objects. Prior to her head injury, in addition to boxing, Katie worked as a substance abuse counselor. Losing everything was hard. “I was pretty depressed after the head injury when I realized I had nothing. I went from having a master’s degree to being like a two year old. It was pretty depressing,” Katie says. Stephanie, her sister, knew that as

a child, Katie used to create a lot of artwork. She suggested she start painting. Stephanie found out about an art studio in Lawrence, Paint or Die, with Sarah Oblinger, so Katie started taking classes. The act of creation started her on a new path. Katie says, “I went wild with the paint—wild animals and demonic creatures were coming out. It turns out the right side of my brain, the creative side, was okay. I was just overflowing with creativity.” Katie enrolled at Johnson County Community College and started taking art classes as an outlet. She wasn’t doing any shows until she spoke on Dateline about boxing. After the show aired, Katie started booking shows and selling her art. “Whether getting ready for a show or not, I need to draw or paint or do something. It’s the only place where I feel real. I’m so much better than I was. I feel so ‘less-than’ in certain areas where you have to remember things and do things. But then I walk into the art room and feel wonderful, normal.” View Katie’s art at www.kdallam.com. Jill Dutton is publisher of Evolving.

Terry Hug Health Coach SICK AND TIRED OF WINTER? ~ How about Cod Liver Oil? With a long cold winter, what overall supplement is most beneficial for energy and overall health? Cod Liver Oil, along with lots of green leafy vegetables. Cod Liver Oil is a wonderful way to get Omega-3, a fatty essential oil for good health and full of vitamin D. The best way to get Vitamin D is the sun, but Cod Liver Oil is a good substitute when the sun is elusive. The rest of the year flax oil or fish oil are good choices, as well as other oils with Omega 3s. Check with your health store or professional. All disease starts with inflammation. Cod Liver Oil helps reduce inflammation and cardiovascular disease, improves arthritis pain and depression, and helps with asthma and fighting cancer. Belching: If you experience belching, you may need to take lipase, a fat-digesting enzyme, with the Cod Liver Oil. Belching is a gall bladder problem—your body is having problems breaking down the fat. If taste is a concern, find a flavored variety of oil. It now is refined better and tastes better than when Grandma gave it to us. Grandma knew best—Add Cod Liver Oil to feel and look better!

A Prescription for Human Wellness: Cuddle a Critter and Call Me in the Morning By Linda Faris, DVM, CVA The human-animal bond has been a hot topic at veterinary meetings and pet groups in recent years. More and more evidence is being gathered and many studies have already concluded that interaction between humans and animals can help people heal. In his book, Kindred Spirits, author Allen Schoen, DVM, proposes that the humananimal bond can improve pet owners' physical and mental health. Studies have proven that pet owners have lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and a diminished risk of heart attack. It is an overwhelming medical reality that love is one of the most important ingredients in a protocol for healing and recovery. A person's happiness is often directly related to the quality of their relationships with other living creatures. In this day and age, healthy relationships can be elusive. Loneliness is an epidemic and anyone can experience it, especially the elderly and chronically ill. Being lonely stresses the immune system and causes a myriad of disease symptoms. The affection and companionship that pets provide simply by being near can help people overcome the pain of loneliness and separation. They can satisfy our undeniable need to touch and to be touched. Having a pet can enhance or restore a person's self-esteem and purpose for living. It gives them a sense of being cared for and caring in return. Pets are one of the most reliable sources of unconditional love in this modern world. They encourage social contact with other people who are interested in animals and they are a stimulus for healthy exercise. For people who are isolated in places where security is not certain, they also can provide protection and decrease fearful feelings. In her book, Pack of Two, Caroline Knapp explores the intricate bond between

people and dogs. This story "illuminates beautifully how the dog's unconditional love filled a gaping hole in Knapp's emotional life." Publishers Weekly Even people who have been hospitalized or placed in nursing homes can have opportunities to interact with pets. Health professionals have started to recognize the fact that pets do more than pills for the elderly. Patients in hospitals or nursing homes who have regular visits from their pets have been shown to be more receptive to treatment. Research has established that even after a heart attack, pet owners are more likely than other coronary patients to be alive a year later. Human-animal bond groups have formed in many communities. These groups provide trained volunteers and therapy pets to make visits to people who do not or cannot have pets of their own. Therapy pets are specially trained animals that have been tested for temperament and personality. They are commonly taken into hospital wards, orphanages, nursing homes and prisons as a part of treatment and rehabilitation programs. Touching and playing with pets gives people a feeling of intimacy which is important for human existence. In prisons, the pet programs have been a magical ingredient to bring about long-term changes in attitudes and behavior. By caring for

pets, prisoners learn, sometimes for the first time in their lives, what it feels like to give and receive affection. A cuddle a day keeps the doctor away. Might it also be true that a cuddle a day keeps the veterinarian away? We live on a two-way street. These creatures that we call pets are a gift to the human race. They are our friends, our healers and sometimes our saviors. But they need us as much as we need them. They need touch, love and training in addition to clean food and fresh water. They need a warm, safe, loving environment where they feel appreciated and adored. They need medical attention and grooming. Remember, they are also affected when a beloved pet pal or human family member leaves the home or passes away. I've treated pets that were ill due to stress in a household and I've seen pets die of grief and loneliness. In times when they are suffering, seek help and guidance as to what solutions will be best for them. The holistic alternatives that you choose for yourself can be applied to animals. At my practice, I perform acupuncture and prescribe Chinese herbs in addition to doing conventional treatments. Holistic medicine recognizes that body, mind and spirit cannot be separated. These

guidelines apply to pets as well as people. Integrating complementary veterinary alternatives involves more "hands on" time than conventional medicine requires. At least an hour is scheduled for an initial consultation and evaluation of a new case. The patient history is explored in depth. Detailed questions are asked about environment, diet, medical history and the emotional factors that affect the pets and the people who make up a household. Frequently, the health of an animal is affected by the health of the caregiver, and vice versa. My prescriptions often include physical affection or massage and special activities and treats. Consider the alternatives when you make health care decisions for the little angels in your midst. Linda Faris, DVM, CVA is a 1986 graduate of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. For fifteen years, she has owned and operated Weston Veterinary Service in Weston, Missouri. By the end of this decade, Linda would like to see acupuncture, herbal medicine and other alternative treatments accepted in modern veterinary education programs and the practice of veterinary medicine. www.westonvet.com

Journey With Your Totem Animal(s) The Animal Totems we choose can be contacted through meditation and prayer. Most of the time, you will find a familiar face awaiting your query, while at other times, you may find yourself face to face with a being that you have no knowledge whatsoever about. By Rev. Aislinn Firehawk

I believe animals represent the purest of spirits. They do not prance and preen, gloat and boast or worry about what their peers think of them. They do not care what we think of them on any level, yet they can be unbelievably “loyal” when they trust the humans they choose to interact with. They are what they are, and never—except with human prodding or intervention—behave otherwise. When I walk through my day, I see all kinds of animals there to guide my steps. I do not need to worry whether or not each encounter offers me a message, because I know it has one if I’m willing to take a moment to “listen.” The question each of us has to answer is: am I capable of discerning each message? Look at the pets we choose to influence us on a daily basis. Why did we select the cat instead of a lizard? Why do we share our bed with our beloved pets? Is there a deeper con-

The bear as a totem animal helps us deal with healing issues. nection with our pets than most care to admit? I believe there is! We select pets—often on an unconscious or sub-conscious level— based upon our current psychological and physiological needs. And there are times when the animal selects us based upon these same needs. By realistically analyzing our choices in not only pets, but also the various “wild” animals that we are attracted to, we can begin the process of personal inventory of ourselves at our basest level. When people say such things as, “I don’t like this or that animal”, or, “this certain animal or creature seems to be everywhere I turn lately,” it offers insight to not only their personality, but also the specific issues that are either coming to the fore, or about to present themselves in the person’s life. The animals, and the influences associated with them, help us. For example: overcome fears—wolf; deal with healing issues—bear; deal with controversy—snake; motivate us— coyote; and much more. When we find ourselves facing certain situations in daily life, we can “recall” the energies of specific animals to help us through our life challenges on many levels. We use this personal power to be forewarned of others’ personalities and/or hidden agendas. When we make these determinations on a conscious level, we must look at the animal, the way it behaves in its natural setting, what is eats, where it lives, how it

interacts with other animals of its kind, and its correlations to other animals within its territory—and, is it a predator or prey? So what exactly are “Totem Animals”? These are creatures—real, imagined, mythical, extinct or even created—that we feel “connected” to on some level of our being. They are our guides, protectors, teachers, companions and sources of personal growth and empowerment. The quality of these connections determines just how well we will learn the lessons our Totem has to teach us. I do not believe we are limited to a single animal throughout our entire life-walk. As we learn and grow, our needs change, thereby changing the type of guidance and/or protection necessary for each new phase of development. Trusting your instincts will ensure that you will work with the appropriate creature at the appropriate time in your life. The Animal Totems we choose can be contacted through meditation and prayer. Most of the time, you will find a familiar face awaiting your query, while at other times, you may find yourself face to face with a being that you have no knowledge whatsoever about. By paying careful attention to your surroundings you can determine what animals may be trying to contact for interaction. Treating whatever animals choose to come to you at various times with the utmost dignity, courtesy and respect is key to any productive interaction—including those of the animal kingdoms. And, do keep in mind that this is not limited to the physical presence of the being; it can also occur in your thoughts, pictures, feelings, energies, dreams, visions and other modes of sensory input. Aislinn Firehawk has been working with her own Totem Animals for many moons. As a result, she finds her life-walk a much easier road to traverse, and her Totem Animals have enriched and enhanced both her personal and professional life-paths. Aislinn recently opened Amethyst Dreams Healing Center, Botanica & Gallery at 3937 Washington, (behind Aquarius), KCMO. Contact her at 816-231-1919.

Integrated Veterinary Medicine Alternative approaches like acupuncture, herbs, homeopathy, chiropractic and nutrition really shine in treating chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, kidney failure and allergies. By Michelle Chappell, DVM, CVA

Welcome to the world of integrated veterinary medicine. No longer do our pets have to go through life with only one set of tools to keep them healthy and happy. Western medicine is terrific for acute conditions like trauma and overwhelming infections. Alternative approaches like acupuncture, herbs, homeopathy, chiropractic and nutrition really shine in treating chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, kidney failure, allergies—the list goes on and on. Combining therapies will give most pets

the cancer cells, too, while still feeding the body and helping it heal. Allergies are another chronic condition that frequently need a combined approach. Chronic yeast infections in the eras are almost always related to allergies to food or the environment. Using a non-invasive technique called NAET (www.naet.com), we can test for specific allergies to food or pollens, dust, etc. Then the patient can be balanced for the allergy using acupressure. Sometimes there will be a need for a short course of antibiotics or antihistamines to give them tem-

For instance, a cat suffering from renal failure can often live much longer and delay the need for fluid injections when given a Chinese herb called Rehmannia Eight along with a canned food diet for more moisture and adding a phosphate binder. We have one cat that has been living very well on this protocol without any fluids for six years! Diabetes is another condition that we have a lot of success with. Nearly all cats can be taken off their insulin given the proper canned food diet that is low in carbohydrates. Some may need additional help in the form of herbs to fully resolve the condition. Dogs, on the other hand, will always need some insulin if they are diabetic, but tend to need far less if on a proper protein diet as well, and they tend to have much more energy with the diet and herbal combinations. Cancer is definitely a challenge worthy of a combined approach. Surgery to reduce the overall cancer load when necessary and then herbs or a topical paste called Neoplasene to dissolve the remaining cancer cells. There are nutritional therapies that help “starve”

porary relief while the balancing is taking effect. We will often recommend a home remedy of rinsing in a vinegar drench to help balance the skin pH. Another area where eastern and western medicine work well together is for anesthesia and surgery. We use homeopathic remedies to minimize pain and swelling before surgery, and a Chinese herbal formula to minimize bleeding. There are acupuncture points that relieve pain as well and these combinations can help reduce the amount of anesthetic and surgical risk. There are herbal calmers that we use in combination with mild sedatives to clean teeth for some dogs where a general anesthesia is not preferred. Experience for yourself how much more health and happiness are possible using the best of both worlds for your “fur kids.”

Complimentary Techniques for Your Pet

By Pat Hennessy

Many health and wellness methods that are not part of the mainstream are referred to as alternative. When it comes to animals, I like to refer to these non-traditional methods as complementary. Whether you are dealing with health or behavior issues, when choosing non-traditional techniques they should be totally complementary to conventional veterinary care or positive reinforcement training. Not all methods work equally across a species. The more tools you have in your toolbox, the better equipped you are to respond to a given situation. Let’s take a tour of some complementary methods that could help your companion animals. Do you have a dog or cat that is shy or anxious around people or new situations? Maybe you have a dog that is a bit reactive around other dogs. Or your companion animal may be in his senior years or dealing with an illness or injury and you wish you had a way to provide more comfort to him. For those pets that have anxiety, either in general or from a specific situation, using complementary techniques along with behavior modification will enhance the training process by providing a physical awareness which alters the mental and emotional state. Animals that have anxiety display their stress in several ways, most identifiably through body language and vocalization. From a training aspect, learning how to recognize those signs will give you the ability to help your companion. By acting quickly and consistently, and using positive reinforcement, it will reduce the anxiety cycle. It is our job to protect them from strangers and other animals and to give them signals that guide their behavior and build their confidence. From a complementary perspective, one of the best ways to help your anxious companion is to provide relaxation. It can be through touch, such as the gentle touch of the Tellington TTouch™ method or a light massage. Electrotherapy such as Alpha-Stim™ helps with relaxation, and energy work such as Reiki can calm as well as foster healing. Other complementary tools that may be useful for calming are essences, such as the Bach flower essence Rescue Remedy, or a pheromone scent (such as D.A.P. or Feliway). Once your animal companion is able to relax, the behavior modification training becomes more effective. We all learn more in the absence of fear or pain. If you are dealing with a behavior issue like shyness or aggression, either one is a stressful state for the animal. Another way to reduce your companion animal’s stress is to manage his environment by giving him appropriate space (be it smaller or larger depending on the issue), appropriate stimulation (such as activity toys), and appropriate exercise (for the breed and age of the pet). If the behavior is extreme and your veterinarian has

prescribed medicine, these calming techniques would be complementary with that as well. Many times behavior modification is recommended in conjunction with pharmaceuticals and achieving a calm focused state will increase the potential for behavior modification success. If your dog or cat is experiencing a physical challenge, there are several techniques that are complementary and integrate well with traditional medicine. Your veterinarian may have already suggested trying herbal supplements, homeopathy, chiropractic treatments or acupuncture. If not, you may want to check with a veterinarian for those possibilities. There are veterinarians in the are who provide those services. There are also other complementary services available to support physically challenged pets. TTouch™, from the Tellington Training Method, utilizes a very gentle touch which works at the cellular level and communicates with the body through the nervous system. This neurological input, along with specific movement, gives the body the ability to learn new ways to function within limitations and can potentially stimulate the body to regain functionality. The TTouch™ method has helped pets with spinal injuries regain mobility, helped pets with structural limitations learn to walk better by taking pressure off of other areas, and helped pets that were born with birth defects learn how to use their limbs more efficiently. Energy work, such as Reiki, can rebalance the body by utilizing life-force energy to focus on areas that need support. This is relaxing, rejuvenating, and healing. Reiki can be done either hands-on or hands-off, which makes it useful for our animal companions that are less tolerant

of being touched. The use of electrotherapy stimulation has branched into the animal world. Units are available now that use a low grade frequency of micro current technology (Alpha-Stim™). This level of stimulation sends a message to the cells to eliminate pain vs. older technology which uses a stronger signal to interrupt or override pain. Rehabilitation facilities offer hydrotherapy and some offer underwater treadmills. This helps build strength, tone muscle and is easier on the joints than regular walking. Hydrotherapy is an excellent choice for orthopedic post-surgery, weight management and pain management. If you are looking for ways to improve your animal companion’s physical or emotional state, there are several options to choose from that are complementary to standard veterinary care and training methods. Check them out and see which one(s) might be helpful to your furry or feathered companion. tation helps focus your dreams and find amazing solutions to financial issues. Be open to new types of spiritual exploration. Try yoga or tai chi. Read about other religions. Meditate in nature or experiment with chanting. You’ll feel connected to your soul in new ways that keep you interested in pursuing spiritual goals. Then you’ll find your “real life” becomes easier to manage, with far less crises! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Mars is energizing you and helping clear the way for new forms of success! It’s a great time to make changes, especially ones that make you nervous. That could be looking for a new job, or even making a drastic shift in your appearance. If you’re in a relationship, explore meditation together. You might even be interested in Tantric sexuality. It’s easy right now to blend your spiritual beliefs with your day-today life, so take chances! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) The Universe is helping you to open your heart at a very deep level. If you notice your mood or trust level changes abruptly in relationships, take a deep breath and meditate. You’ll find that an old, buried piece of anger is at the root. It’s not about

the current person, but about an unresolved pattern within you. You can create healthy boundaries that allow for love to flow in (and out!) while keeping abuse at a distance! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Relationships are going great– always good news for Libra! You could also be making new friends who have similar interests. It’s important to explore hobbies so you’re not obsessed with your love life! You’ll also have health and self-care breakthroughs. You might find a new eating plan that is healthful and scrumptious. Maybe you’ll discover a healing modality, like cranial-sacral therapy or acupuncture, which yields great results physically and emotionally. Enjoy your life! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Your romantic life is blossoming! Be open to new types of people to date if single. If partnered, explore new hobbies and fun activities together. Your career can take some exciting turns. Express your ideas boldly and supervisors will take notice. You might even get job offers if your current one is limited. But make sure you’re having plenty of playtime, so you’re refreshed when you have to be at work.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Be ready for emotional breakthroughs! You’ll be able to clear out childhood issues that keep you from bonding as deeply as you’d like. Your spiritual life will also open up further as you feel divine love coursing through your veins. True Sagittarius energy is about exploring unknown areas of the heart, not just jumping from relationship to relationship, or from one spiritual practice to another. You’ll feel more authentic as you stay present with your current circumstances. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Meditation gives “ah ha!” insights into longstanding problems. These could be about ongoing financial issues–or about trust in relationships. Be aware when bonding gets deep, you can get snappy to keep folks at a distance. Let your moods be a barometer of your level of fear of intimacy. Just vocalizing your anxiety can help partnerships leap forward in a positive way. With money, fear of failure is your demon. Talking about your vulnerabilities will also heal old patterns of self-sabotage. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You could be starting a new relationship or rekindling the fires of a present partnership! Let your sexuality blend with your heart energy. It’s easy to be “in your head” about your body. But passion is meant to be felt, not analyzed and intellectualized! Meditate on ways you can communicate and care for your body.
