Dear Friend, The theme this month, metaphysics, is an ethereal one. The technical definition is the philosophical study of being and knowing. So, to know thyself is true power. Or, as Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” From the Socratic view, we must assess our morals to truly examine life. And that he who is virtuous is happy. Sometimes asking tough questions of ourselves is painful, but the journey of self-discovery is worth it. I wrote in my journal once, “Ignorance isn’t bliss. The quest for morality is the highest priority, even if it makes us uncomfortable.” Some questions to ask when examining a life include: What is my most significant virtue—and how did I acquire it? What is my most significant vice— and how did I acquire it? By looking truthfully at our vices and virtues we may better understand ourselves. The articles this month focus on metaphysics, and various ways to examine your life—whether through hypnosis, color, self-examination or living without regrets. Because with self-knowledge comes the ultimate purpose in life, “a love of beauty, truth and goodness.”

The Pachakuti Mesa Tradition: Cross Cultural Shamanic Arts for Personal and Planetary Renewal Walk a path of ancestral wisdom in the modern world

Wholistic Health Fair Scheduled The energy pulsing out of the double -doors into Pierson Auditorium is palpable. Once through the doors, the intrepid visitor is swept up in a swirl of color, sound and healing vibes: tie-dye hangings from The Herb Shop adorn the walls while a soft djembe beat seems to echo the patterns on the fabric. This is UMKC/Communiversity’s Wholistic Health Fair, an annual event since 1999 where a plethora of alternative-health practitioners gather to share their knowledge, experience and philosophies with the public. The very first Wholistic Health Fair, held in the Spring of 1990, was the brain child of Communiversity employee Jo Bonewits. Richard Mende, founder of the Gaura Haré Institute, has been helping out and exhibiting at the Fair since 1999. His take: “The Wholistic Health Fair is a happening. The annual event is a cacophony of sights and sounds, representing a vast variety of healing modalities—from spiritual approaches such as Bhakta Yoga to well-known alternative applications such as acupuncture, chiropractic and herbs. And each year there are always a few new surprises to look forward to.” Barbara Criswell, owner of Aquarius, is a regular exhibitor at the fair. She is especially impressed with the noncommercial nature of the gathering and the sense of community the fair inspires. “People come to the Communiversity Health Fair as a way to enhance and expand their lives, not out of a sense of neediness. That’s why I enjoy it so much and participate every year.” In addition to the many exhibitors at

our fair, they offer some great workshops at a bargain price. You can take three workshops for $5 if you pre register by calling Communiversity. The workshops offer participants a chance to enhance their knowledge and ask questions of the presenters. Since the fall of 1970, Communiversity has succeeded through the generosity and commitment of hundreds of conveners and thousands of participants. Non-credit classes have been offered, for a nominal fee, to change society, change yourself or just for fun. No one knows what the next trend will be, but chances are, someone will soon teach it through Communiversity. Communiversity is a great venue for anyone wishing to share a skill or an idea with others without the hassle of publicizing the workshop, registering people and finding a location. All those willing to learn, as well as those willing to teach, will find a special place in Communiversity to mingle and exchange ideas. You can find Richard, Barbara and the Communiversity staff and an array of innovative health concepts on the top floor of UMKC’s University Center on Sunday, November 8th from 11:00 AM until 6 PM. Twenty-four workshops will offer the health fair attendee new ways of dealing with physical and spiritual issues, while over sixty exhibitors will introduce their products, know -how and services. Call 816-235-1448, pick up a catalog of upcoming classes and the show guide at any public library or visit our website www.umkc.edu/commu for more information.

Janet Dallett, a nationally known writer and Jungian analyst specializing in the psychology of creativity, will present three programs in Lawrence, Ks, October 16 – 18. The events, sponsored by the Kansas City Friends of Jung, will be: a lecture, “Listening to the Rhino: Where Psyche and Body Meet,” Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 pm; a workshop, “An American Archetype: The Explosion as Icon of the Drive for Independence,” Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 am to 4 pm; and a reading and book signing, Can the Writer Change Her Spots, Sunday, Oct. 18 from 2 to 4 pm.

The Friday lecture and Saturday workshops will be held at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Rd. The Sunday book event will be held in the Stained Glass Room (inside Buffalo Bob’s Smokehouse), 719 Massachusetts St. Dallett explores issues surrounding personal growth, inner healing and illness, topics she says the scientific community is only beginning to investigate. According to Lawrence analyst and KC Friends of Jung Board member Dr. Lois E. Wilkins, Dallet’s work is of special timeliness.

The Mystery School Temple of the Goddess in Kansas City, Missouri announces the 2010 Mystery School with a series of workshops introducing the Mystery School experience. The Mystery School is a Lunar Initiation celebrating the participant’s higher wisdom while providing a supportive container to explore unique soul gifts, personal inner calling, and full earthly expression of Divine Purpose. Through a variety of celestial and earthly spirit journeys, participants strengthen their access to Higher Self and merge this timeless, infinite knowing into a Heaven on Earth experience. Facilitator Priestess Kim Oursler says, “This journey carves out dedicated space and time to explore your unique energetic field within a supportive circle of fellow seekers. Through the shamanic process of identifying Universal patterns woven throughout your life, you are able to make conscious choice to release imprints that no longer reflect your soul's vibration, while integrating your personal divine nature. From this strong foundation of Integration, you connect to your

ONCE LET GO By Paul Goldman Hands unclenched have dropped the featherweight heirs of deception. What remains are golden nuggets fired in a Tibetan monastery kiln. A familiar smile returns as the sacred laughter arises beyond the altar, deeper still, the notes of silent songs sing. There is no gathering up here, only a constant letting go of that which comes next and— always another letting go… Promises to self separate from their owner, a true path unfolds each step set in stone before this time. This moment sizzles electric as you taste the sweetness of the Beloved’s breath. For a single instant you think you have at last found IT, and then you realize it does not exist separate. You gather together all that is, avowing holy to remain in union, to remember that once let go, everything is in your grasp, to cherish, to love, to simply give away as if it were never yours.

Calcium Without the Cow By Bethany Klug, DO Where am I going to get my calcium if I cut dairy out of my diet? This is the most common question asked when I explain the merits of a dairy-free diet as I did in my August column. Allow me to introduce a far better source of calcium than milk: dark leafy greens. No, not romaine lettuce or spinach, I’m talking kale, collard greens, watercress, dandelion greens, Swiss chard, beet greens and cabbage. Most people who eat what passes for a healthy diet have never tasted this delicious treat. I encourage everyone to have at least one serving of dark leafy greens daily. Dark leafy greens are an excellent source of calcium without the fat and inflammation-causing casein of cow’s milk. Remember cows don’t get those big bones by drinking milk. They get them by eating grass. We get them by eating dark leafy green vegetables. Dark leafy greens have two-tofive times the antioxidant vitamins A and C of other vegetables. They contain unique phytonutrients that causes the liver to do a better job at detoxifying cancer causing substances. They also cause cancer cells to stop multiplying and die. So let’s transform an all-time favorite food into a calcium and phytonutrientrich taste treat. This pizza has a pesto base. Red miso, the Japanese fermented soy paste, creates the sharp flavor of parmesan cheese. Find miso in the dairy case at your local health food store. Walnuts in the pesto sauce are a good source of calcium and omega-3 fats. This recipe calls for Swiss chard, but is delicious with kale, beet or collard greens.

Too Good to be Healthy Pizza 1 Whole Wheat Pizza Crust 10 sun dried tomatoes 1/3 cup non-dairy pesto (recipe below) 3 water packed artichoke hearts ½ bunch Swiss chard 12 Kalamata olives Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Wash the greens and trim any rough ends. Chop the leaves into bite size pieces and the stems into ¼ inch pieces. Place the

stems into a steamer basket first, and then add the leaves. Steam for five minutes. Hydrate the sun-dried tomatoes by simmering them in water for five minutes or as directed on the package. Allow them to drain and cool in a strainer. Meanwhile, smash the olives with the flat side of a chef’s knife. This loosens the seed. Slice the olives in half lengthwise and discard the seeds. Slice each artichoke heart lengthwise into 3 or 4 slices. Slice the sun-dried tomatoes lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices.

Place the pizza crust on a pizza pan. Spread 1/3 cup of non-dairy pesto on the pizza. Using a fork or tongs, spread the Swiss chard evenly over the pesto. Arrange the olives, artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes over the Swiss chard. Bake for 9 – 10 minutes or until crust reaches desired crispness. Serves 3 – 4 people.

Lose the Blues By Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all. Emily Dickinson As the days become shorter and the nights longerm the weather a bit cooler, the fall and winter “blues” may be coming to visit some of you. I thought a review of the many wonderful ideas that help alleviate depression would be helpful. Dr. Stephen Ilardi, a psychology professor at Kansas University, just published the book, The Depression Cure, detailing his research on a six -step program to beat depression without drugs. Researchers like Dr. Ilardi have found that in modern hunter/ gatherer societies depression is nearly non-existent. Looking at their lifestyle reveals something interesting. People who live more connected to the earth and the environment for their sustenance tend to get enough sleep, exercise, sunlight, eat healthier regular

meals and have daily social interactions. Their spiritual practices and tribal culture provide them with ways to interpret the sufferings of life as more natural occurrences. If we look at most people’s life style today, it would be quite the opposite. We never seem to have enough time to fix really good meals, get enough sleep or have fun with friends. The couch gets entirely too much company while we are eating those tempting high fat and sugar snacks watching TV. And of course, vitamins and herbs are too expensive or you just can’t remember to take them. Dr. Ilardi recommends reclaiming these lifestyle habits: • •

• • • •

Dietary omega-3 fatty acids Engaging activity (rather than negative or ruminative thinking) Physical exercise Sunlight exposure Social support Sleep

The key is to begin with something that you know you can accomplish. Take one item on the list.

Maybe exercise appeals to you. Pick a time, preferably early in the day, and a type of exercise (maybe rotating) and the amount of time you can schedule. At a time in my life when I was recovering from a significant loss, I happened to run into an old friend. We scheduled a time to get together for a walk and visit. It was so enjoyable we decided to walk every day from 7-8 am. We did that for over a year until my friend moved to another state. Once you begin to feel those endorphins kick in, you will want to continue to exercise. Perhaps you would choose to add a social activity on a regular basis. Maybe your grandchildren need you as a baby sitter or a group you are connected with needs someone to volunteer for a special activity. When we are pushed into an activity, we are often pleasantly surprised that we feel better, less depressed. This is the “hook” that will keep us working on making more changes. Change your Brain, Change Your Life by Daniel Amen incorporates the positive thinking element, along with life style changes. He

also talks about brain function problems and ways to change them. If you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), then Winter Blues: Seasonal Affective Disorder by Norman Rosenthal is very good. He talks about light therapy, psychotherapy, medications, herbs and vitamins, among other topics. So, time to get started. To begin, pick one life-style change and begin your journey. Shake the blues, remind yourself of what you already know and feel better very soon. Or better yet, don’t let those blues catch you. Though winter is coming, let hope keep sitting in your soul, singing out those positive refrains. Jude LaClaire, Ph.D., LCPC, LCSW is a counselor, educator and author. The High Price of “Cheap” Foods By Carmelita Davis Beets If you’re like many shoppers, you may wonder why there’s such a price difference between organic and nonorganic, or conventional foods. After all, it’s all food, isn’t it? What makes organically grown food so much more expensive than conventional food? To start with, it’s important to understand how these foods are grown and processed. Conventional food is grown and processed using chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, sewage and sludge, irradiation or genetic manipulation. This food is loaded with systemic chemicals that can’t be washed off. Organic food, on the other hand, is grown and processed without any of these toxic and unhealthy things. Meat, including beef, chicken, pork and lamb, are laced with hormones, antibiotics, prions and multiple strains of resistant bacteria—all of which are difficult, if not impossible, to cook out. On the surface, conventional food appears to be much cheaper than organic food. But once you realize how toxic that food is, you begin to see that you actually pay a very high price for that food. The price you pay for organic food is quite clear because you pay once, at the store, when you buy it. The majority of the costs associated with conventional food are actually hidden—in fact, you pay for conventional food at least four times! The first time you pay for conventional food is the amount paid to the store when the food is purchased. The second time you pay for it is with your tax dollars that go toward farm subsidies. The crops that receive the most government subsidies in the U.S. are soy, cotton, corn, rice and wheat. In fact, these five crops receive more than 80 percent of the farm subsidies paid with our taxes. It is estimated that more than 70 percent of conventional food in the United States is processed in some way. Food that comes in a box, jar,

package, bottle, can or bag is processed. Most of the ingredients that make up processed foods come from soy, corn, canola, cotton, rice or wheat. More than 75 percent of all processed foods have genetically modified ingredients. The third time you pay for conventional food occurs when your tax dollars are used to clean up chemical spills, contaminated wells and polluted ground water, save rivers that have been trashed, investigate ocean dead zones and help injured farm workers. In short, taxes are used to help our toxic land and countless victims of food-related diseases. The fourth time you pay is at the doctor’s office, when you are treated for illnesses, diseases and conditions that compromise your quality of life—all caused by years of eating conventional food containing toxic and dangerous substances. These include obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Parkinson’s and birth defects…plus a hundred or so other diseases that are related to pesticides or toxic foods. Organic food takes quite another approach. The goal of organic farming is to restore and feed soil life, honor nature and food grown on the land and respect the sustainability of our planet’s resources. Soil is supported by applying composted manures or vegetables that aid the development of microorganisms. Then,

organic matter is added to the soil to feed the microorganisms. Organic farmers also add lime, gypsum, potash and a bit of phosphorus to the soil. They use fertilizer crops in order to restore nutrients that may have grown scarce over time. Rather than using pesticides, organic farmers closely monitor their crops, release beneficial insects, plant companion crops (to confuse pests!) and through watchfulness, they plant when pests are not such a scourge. So yes—organic food costs more, if you only consider what you pay at the store. But there is actually a very high price to “cheap” food. I encourage you to start integrating organic foods into your diet. Start with some produce items and expand from there. You don’t have to change everything overnight! But the more you eat organic, the better you’ll feel; and, after awhile, organic food won’t seem so expensive. Rather than focus on the cost of organic food, focus on how much better it is for you! Designs of Spirit By Jill Dutton Successful business owners frequently comment that the idea for their business originated from a personal need. Cheryl Heywood, owner of Designs of Spirit, is no exception. What started as a way to process through self healing led to a business venture to aid others on their healing journeys. Working as a registered nurse, Cheryl has always been interested in the healing field. She created her website with dual intentions: to create handmade jewelry which is designed to support mind/body issues for healing; and to educate

the reader about holistic healing methods she feels are beneficial for adults and children. One aspect of her business is the gemstone jewelry she creates to

promote healing. Cheryl believes different stones have the ability to aid in correcting the energy fields, thus allowing healing to begin. “A lot of illness is started by the emotions and our energy fields. If we can assist those emotions in being felt and moving on then we have a better chance to heal,” Cheryl says. Although Cheryl focused on chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia issues previously, her focus changed in May, 2007 after a Prairie Labyrinth burn. She says individuals spoke their stories and expressed things they’re like to “burn”. “I decided I needed to dissociate myself from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.” Later, in 2009, she removed the page from her website. Now the pages on her website focus on various gemstones. She offers several varieties of cancer support bracelets. Of the need to balance energy for healing, Cheryl says, “Medicines, drugs or herbs work to heal our body-mind because the vibration produced has the right harmonic relationship to the part of the body-mind in a state of disease. “At times those methods eliminate the energetic imbalance that caused the disease to begin with. But sometimes we need more help to raise our vibrational levels and

improve/reverse the disease process. Engaging in alternative vibrational healing methods can assist us. Essential oils, flower essences, hands-on healing (e.g. Reiki) and gemstone therapy are just a few of the therapies that can change our vibrational frequency and influence our overall health. “ Another set of bracelets she creates focus on goddess guidance: “Throughout the ages many different cultures have revered goddess energy as the creative feminine power which guides the universe. Now many people choose to learn about goddesses in order to honor the female, nurturing aspects of

What Is Metaphysics? By Teresa Martin As a teacher of metaphysics I am often asked, “What is metaphysics?” For a complex sounding subject, there is a very simple answer. Metaphysics is the study of what is beyond the sensory realm. It is the realm of extrasensory perception, experiences of the mind, intuition, nightly dreams and thought. It’s an intangible world that is directly connected with our physical world. Metaphysics is the practical use of the mind’s skills to understand ourselves and our world more completely. For those with scattered attention, it becomes the practice of focusing the mind. For the stressed out individual, it is the effort to bring the self to peace. For the one who has been hurt by others, metaphysics becomes the study of forgiveness and gratitude. The lessons of life take on many forms and by developing the mind we can learn those lessons more quickly. The 10 Essential Life Skills of the Mind: Self Respect is the capacity to look at ourselves rather than others as cause. There is power and freedom in finding personal responsibility in any situation. Growth-filled life experiences provide fodder for understanding our strength and capabilities. By the same token, experiences leading to regret or sorrow can be a stimulus for change. The best focus is “How can I change?,” rather than expecting others to change Attention is our ability to focus the mind on one thought or object. Building the ability to focus the mind’s attention is mental efficiency which leads to physical efficiency. So if you’ve ever wanted to have more hours in the day, then developing attention is essential. Memory is our capacity to recall a moment ago, a week ago, or years ago just as clearly as if the events were happening right now. Developing better memory builds on focused attention as experiences are received more completely and can then be recalled with accuracy. Concentration is the ability to hold the attention for as long as you want on whatever you have chosen. Becoming a concert pianist, parenting, writing a book require concentration skills to become excellent. Practicing a skill every day is a guarantee for eventual accomplishment of a goal or development of a personal skill. Listening is a skill that is endearing to other people and is a wonderful gift to give. Everyone October 2009

Living a No-Regrets Life by Shani Enns

wants to be listened to and unfortunately is a rather rare experience for many. Building listening skills coupled with meditation can open up to receiving wisdom from within our own minds. This begins with having a still mind, ceasing the chatter that typically goes on in our minds. Imagination is the skill of our mind that improves everything. Look around you at the environment you are in and imagine how it can become better. It might be as simple as adding some plants or removing unwanted “stuff”. Imagination is the capacity to see with the mind and bring the image to life. Reasoning builds upon three Essential Skills. It is a combination of attention, memory and imagination. With attention in the present moment, memory of what has worked and imagination as to how improve upon the present moment, reasoning is brought to bear. Intuition comes to those who have a focused mind and can receive impressions energetically. It is combined with reasoning to discern probabilities. For example, you may have an experience of thinking of a good friend and then the phone rings. You pick up the phone and it’s the very friend you’d just been thinking of. Did your friend call because you’d been thinking of them? Or were you thinking of them because they were about to call? Either way, it is a metaphysical/ intuitive experience of connectedness for both of you. Breath is more than a movement of the diaphragm pulling air into the lungs and then pushing it out again. It is the very energy that enters our being and becomes life force. The energy known as chi, or ki, or prana can be directed by visualizing its flow and understanding it’s nature. Breath is the life force that enervates the body and the mind. Entrainment is an aligning of all parts of the mind. It is the experience of being “in the zone.” Everything works under conditions of entrainment. Thoughts manifest instantaneously; energy flows easily and readily and there are no limits. Metaphysics is practical and the daily practice of mental exercises can improve your life significantly. If it’s simple and it works then metaphysical principles are activated.

I've always heard that no one on their deathbed says they wish they'd just put in a little more time at the office. Or, that they regret not having balanced their checkbook regularly. Forgiveness, gratitude and the expression of love are the qualities I've seen over and over again, longing to be expressed when we are faced with tragedy or loss. Ten years out of high school, with three babies at home, my doctor told me I had ovarian and breast cancers. Two things became apparent to me very quickly. The first was that I wanted to live. Truly, for the first time in my life, I knew beyond a shadow of doubt that I wanted to be alive—not as I had lived up to then, but really gloriously, vibrantly and fully alive. And the second thing was that I needed more than anything to say “thank you” and “I'm sorry” to some people. I needed that even more powerfully than any need to take care of my physical self. With my doctor impatiently tapping his watch and telling me time was of the essence, I refused to have surgery or treatment until my soul was satisfied. Without telling anyone why or what was going on with my health, I drove back to my hometown, went to my old school and apologized to some teachers I'd given a hard time. I looked up an old friend and told him that I wouldn't have made it through junior high without him; and, how profoundly he impacted my ability to trust. I became really present with my children. Cooking and washing dishes became a gift of love, an exercise in gratitude that I cherished because I had no idea how many more meals I would have the honor of making for them. I poured love and gratitude into every action and task as much as I was able. I got out the good dishes, the wedding china that had been given to us; I served grilled cheese sandwiches to my toddlers on it. I started using paper plates when guests came over—I'd wink at my kids and they'd giggle. I wanted them to know they were worth the best I had to offer and more. Every chip in the china became an opportunity for me to make sure my kids knew they mattered more to me than any possession. When I finally agreed to surgery some months later, I knew I was going to live. And also, I was no longer afraid to die. I no longer had regrets to carry with me and my heart was peaceful. Live with the end in mind. Live each moment of life asking yourself, when I am living my final moments, will this have been important to me? Will I remember this five years from now? Ten years from now? A week from now? It is in this mind-set that we can live fully and without regret, choosing in every moment the life we wish to live, the legacy we wish to leave. Without the weight of regret, we can embrace change as it comes and moment by moment build a past and future with which we will be at peace.

The Power of Color By Leiola Reeder What’s your favorite color? You probably have no idea why you prefer one color over another. Color is powerful! Color can attract or repel. It can change your mood by soothing or exciting you. And, as advertisers know, it can make you want to buy something. Scientists have studied the effects of color for years. They know that color has power. In many animal species, including humans, red quickens the heart rate and causes the release of adrenaline. When chickens see blood, they peck. Red contact lenses prevent the birds from seeing that color – and thus from killing each other. Inmates are reported to be calmer when held in cells painted pink. The same pink suppresses appetite, while orange stimulates. There is no doubt about it, color can affect us psychologically—and it is now believed that every part of our lives can be affected by color. Color therapy uses the energy emitted by different colors to tap into the energy that we need for every situation, including health, career, money, success and even our sex life. Without realizing it, you are probably already using color in your lifestyle to reflect and change your mood—from your choice of outfit to the color you paint your home, though few people stop and question why color makes them feel a certain way. So what exactly is color? Why is it so powerful? It is LIGHT. Color is light vibrating at different frequencies. The wavelength and speed of each color varies. For instance, red is seen as the lowest frequency of the visual spectrum, while violet is seen as the highest. The human eye sees these colors to bring us the whole of the rainbow: red, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Different parts of our body also vibrate at different speeds and frequencies. When there is imbalance in our vibrations, color may be able to help bring us back into equilibrium. Color therapy/Chromotherapy has a long history, from Egyptian

There is much to suggest that the healing benefits of color may have been known to civilizations as old as the Sumerians–around 3000 B.C.–and maybe even long before that.

and Greek therapies as well as Chinese, Indian and Ayurvedic medicine. Many are based on Eastern medicine’s chakras, where each of the seven major chakras has its own color energy and vibrates at a different frequency. Red is the slowest energy, governing vitality and sexuality; whereas violet, at the opposite end of the spectrum, is responsible for creativity, inspiration and strength. There is much to suggest that the healing benefits of color may have been known to civilizations as old as the Sumerians—around 3000 B.C.— and maybe even long before that. Certainly, texts dated back to around 1550 B.C. reveal that the ancient Egyptians not only used color routinely as a therapeutic tool, but also developed this art to extremely high levels of efficacy. At the time of the pharaohs, healing temples were constructed. These incorporated quartz crystal screens which acted like prisms, splitting light into its component colors. These crystals directed individual colors into separate chambers, where patients were placed accord-

ing to their ailments. Those who were low in energy, for example, might be revitalized in chambers flooded with red light rays; while others needing to be tranquilized might have been placed in rooms that were bathed in blue light. Today, color therapists continue to recognize the effects that color can have on our entire wellbeing. One of the most exciting systems that work with color is Aura-Soma. It is a holistic tool that works on many levels. It consists of a range of oils combining the energies of the natural world: herbs, essences, gem and crystal energies in solutions of mesmerizing colors. The Aura-Soma Color Care System brings together these ‘color energies’ at a profound level. Through utilizing the Aura-Soma System, we may enter a new found self-awareness. We can move toward awakening an enthusiasm for life, finding more ease in our relationships, appreciating ourselves and our talents, experiencing more love and caring in our lives, rebalancing, revitalizing, and harmonizing our

energies and reconnecting with our inner selves and intuition. Aura-Soma System was founded by Vicky Wall in 1983. Vicky trained in both pharmacy and surgical chiropody in England. In the twilight of her years, clinically blind, suffering from heart ailments and diabetes, she was guided through meditation to “Divide the waters.” Although she had no idea what this could mean, she went to work in her laboratory and created the first dazzlingly beautiful Equilibrium bottles. Vicky believed that hands greater than her own were her guides. Quite rapidly, people began to report that the contents of these bottles had extraordinary effects. Vicky continued their development, over time becoming more aware of their usage. She began sharing her findings with others and proliferating the message. Vicky passed in 1991, leaving the Aura-Soma System in the good hands of her chosen successor, Mike Booth. Today, the Aura-Soma is represented in most European countries, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, Russia, U.S. and many, many others. The best way to discover what the Aura-Soma Color Care System can do for you is to receive a consultation. In a consultation, over 100 dual colored bottles are displayed with their jewel-like colors shimmering. The trained Practitioner asks you to choose the four bottles which call to you the most. The bottles speak of our choices and our journey through “the color code”, revealing aspects of our personality, our gifts and talents, our present situation and our potential. “You are the colors you choose and these reflect your being’s needs.”

Remembering the Past Through Hypnosis “Hypnosis is a self-awareness technique used to overcome the programming of the past.”

exist in us. Regression/past-life hypnosis can assist you in remembering your life purpose, releasing physical and emotional pain, enhancing relationships, and providing understanding and acceptance. Solutions for struggles in your present life and release of fear that blocks you from your current path may be overcome—allowing you to more fully live your life purpose.

By Jay Peters I have always had a yearning to know how the mind works and how to make better connective decisions while improving the quality of life. The subconscious part of our self-awareness remembers all experiences and stores them in a memory vault, much like a recording device. All of our behavior flows from our subconscious mind and is managed by the conscious part of whom we appear to be. It is very difficult to access subconscious memory because our mind is designed to guard and protect whatever we have recorded and stored. It can only release that which the conscious mind allows.

Past-life memory, like love, is an experience to be enjoyed and to be embraced for emotional growth and spiritual development. Most people will agree that love exists; yet, they cannot explain the feeling of love for another person. Although you might not be able to prove the existence of love, you continue to experience it. Perhaps it is not necessary to prove love in order to share its benefits. It is the experience, not the proof, which is important.

Hypnosis is designed to convince the conscious mind to let go, thereby allowing change, healing and release of buried information from a very distant and vague past. The process of regression hypnosis is an opportunity for spiritual growth and emotional development. It can provide change, healing, understanding and greater selfawareness. Many people plod along day after day, feeling that something just isn’t right in their lives. Who am I? What am I about? Where did I come from? What is my purpose in life? What they don’t realize is that there is a deep spiritual or divine power in them to change and understand through remembering and knowledge. It is a scientifically proven fact that the secret begins October 2009

with self-awareness. Hypnosis is a self-awareness technique used to overcome the programming of the past. It is a state of mind that can be used for self-improvement. It moves us toward the natural process of self -awareness.

Regression hypnosis penetrates channels of awareness that give significant meaning to our life experiences. Most people are curious about past-life regression hypnosis. We may have wondered about the past or may be aware and are sure that past lives

The history of the soul, i.e., the cumulative total of lives spanning many centuries, is recorded in the person’s subconscious mind. Many of us have no conscious memories of such past events; yet, the associated emotions, talents and behaviors have a direct and profound effect on our current lives. Gaining access to those records can be the adventure of a lifetime! We talk about the mysteries of the mind, but only a few people become involved with the investigation. Some are skeptical of the concept of past lives and of the connection that past lives have in our current life. They seek empirical evidence.

Trying to prove through the senses, or by logic, the authenticity of past lives is like trying to prove the existence of love. Critics question whether past-life memory is authentic. The names, places and dates could have been recalled from existing records, which had been heard or read and then forgotten by the conscious mind. It could also be from the imagination or from generational cellular memory. In some instances, these opinions might be accurate; however, the reports of so many people who believe that their recollections must have come from past lives have led many therapists and researchers to accept the idea that we have had many lifetimes on earth.

astonished and skeptical when she began recalling past-life memories that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks. Using past-life therapy, he was able to cure the patient.

In his book, Old Souls, Tom Shroder profiles scientific evidence presented by Dr. Ian Stevenson, a professor at the University of Virginia. Dr. Stevenson provides compelling scientific evidence of past lives from small children who spontaneously were speaking of previous lives, begging to be taken “home” calling for mothers and husbands and knowing things about other people and families with no normal way of knowing them. From the moment these children could talk, they spoke of people and events from previous lives and of identifiable individuals who may have died just before the birth of the child. These individuals are often unknown to the child’s family and live in different towns or a different part of the country. As reported by Dr. Stevenson, when these families are brought together, total strangers united by a child’s claim, the emotional force of mutual recognition and the factual verification of the child’s past-life memories can be utterly astounding.

The past-life record of who you were on the inside, your individuality, is much more important than who you appeared to be on the outside. The true value of knowledge of past lives is in the lessons you have learned. Our soul’s memory is our true wisdom. How close did we come to fulfilling the purpose for which we came to earth? Did we work to bring ourselves and others closer to the understanding of life? These and other similar questions seem to be more important than the data of whom, where and when. The progress of the soul toward connection with God is the measuring rod by which we view a lifetime. Each life contains histories of splendor and tales of tragedy along with wonder and growth. Regression exercises are gifts to refresh your memory. They are like pieces of a complex puzzle that you fit together, revealing a full panorama of your soul.

Dr. Brian Weiss, M.D., Psychiatrist and Hypnotherapist, a graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School, profiles one of his patients recalling pastlife traumas in his book Many Lives, Many Masters. He was

In past-life regression, the mysteries of the inner self and the subconscious mind are explored. Many people are apprehensive about embarking on this journey without a guide. The work of a regressionist is like that

of an archaeologist who studies the sites and artifacts of prehistoric people. The regressionist digs through the strata and substrata of memory. Hypnotherapy and remembering the past through hypnosis is a non-threatening peaceful experience designed to enhance the quality of a person’s current life and relationships. It gives us a spiritual connection with our spirit or soul. It helps us to learn from our many experiences about ourselves. My experience as a regression hypnotherapist has been an adventure watching people come alive connecting with the past that they believe is truly their own history. Observing people light up with the experience and feeling they now understand, for the first time, something about themselves and their relationships or habits they always questioned. The truly successful result of the experience is knowing that a person’s life will be free of pain, guilt or confusion about who they are and what their life is all about. Results are also measured by their ability to continue to mature and grow with a greater sense of self and deeper selfawareness. WHO is Manifesting Your Life? By Rev. Maitreya Zohar Often we feel powerless to transform ourselves and thus the circumstances in which we choose to live. This month’s Evolving poses the topic of manifestation and I am asking, “Who is manifesting your life?” On August 20, 2009, I moved from Los Angeles to Kansas City. My daughter and I had moved from New York City to Los Angeles to manifest her dream of attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) acting program. Her strong inner calling to move to Santa Monica for her senior year of high school ultimately created our move; a move that for me was temporary— four to six years. She did her part wonderfully: SATs, graduating high school, essays and entrance exams, auditions, etc. and became one of 70 accepted students out of just over 1000 applicants to the Theatre, Film, and Television program. This past April, in the spring quarter of her junior year, my daughter expressed her readiness to live in her own apartment. Six months earlier, when moving was my idea, she was adamant about living with me. Now she was fully aligned with taking the next step toward her independence; so much so, that within two weeks, she had found the perfect apartment, had a new roommate lined up and I was giving my notice for the end of May. So, who is manifesting my life? Sometimes it seems that as my daughter goes, so do I. Then I remind myself that 21 years ago, I chose to be a parent; it was at that time that I made the choice to guide this soul to adulthood. How is it that I could feel emotionally tossed about and “victim” in one moment as my daughter made powerful choices for her life and in the next breathe I could feel rooted in the knowing that I had done what I had set out to do, 21 years before? We are made up of multiple facets and at any one time we may have various inner voices sending us signals. I believe the strongest signal in the moment is the one that becomes our manifest reality. Here is a list of a few of the voices that could be speaking in you right now: adult self, inner child, male self, female self, physical body, emotional body, mental body, spiritual body or your inner saboteur. I wear several “hats”, three of which are Healer, Channel, and Intuitive Tarot Reader. During a reading with a single mother, we looked October 2009

16 Evolving…

into career matters, as she was unemployed. The reading showed two paths: 1) the path her female self wanted to take, which included time with her young daughter, healing people with Reflexology and Reiki—being self employed and 2) the path her male self wanted to take, which was of job security with a company that had benefits and a steady paycheck. I shared with her that in order to manifest her new fulfilling, well paying career, she would need to get her male and female selves working in partnership. I explained that the energetic fight going on inside her was creating a stalemate and thus she wasn’t manifesting her career, but was instead manifesting experiences like procrastination, confusion, indecision, powerlessness, insomnia, excess TV watching and overeating. She thought she wasn’t manifesting. I explained to her that we are always manifesting; however, we are not always conscious of what we are manifesting. Another client, healing cancer, was struggling with the choice of healing herself with allopathic or holistic treatments. The reading showed that her inner child wanted to travel the allopathic route and her adult self wanted to travel the holistic route. The inner conflict between her adult self and her inner child was manifesting itself as extreme stress and complete powerlessness around making a choice with which she could feel truly at peace. It was explained to her that either path, allopathic or holistic, taken from the place of true peace—her inner child and adult self working in partnership—would manifest a full healing. From my own life: I am in the grocery store. My inner child is calling, “Ice cream, mint chocolate chip, we need some ice cream.” My mother’s voice echoes, “Not before you finish your veggies.” Off to the vegetable aisle I go. My female self chooses something colorful and nurturing and my male self pipes up with, “We need some meat to go with that.” “Dessert, we need dessert,” my child self calls again. Sensing the judgments of my mental body and the denial of sweets for my inner child, my spiritual body counsels, “Everything in moderation, balance is key.” I pass the flowers on my way to the ice cream aisle and my mental and emotional bodies feel calmed and relaxed. I could keep going with this supermarket adventure but I suspect you get the point.

By fully receiving the aspect of us that is in fear, we reconnect with the love of our Spirit. So, who is manifesting your life? I have chosen one voice to have the final say. The lessons of free will versus divine choice have taught me that this voice leads to liberation. This voice is the voice of my Spirit. Experience has led me to observe that the majority of people have a deep need to be completely “gotten” by other human beings. I believe the same of our inner world. By fully receiving the aspect of us that is in fear, we reconnect with the love of our Spirit. I believe in miracles. I personally have seen the unexplainable numerous times and now believe that when we align the various facets or aspects within ourselves on the desire of our Spirit, that intention becomes our reality. Part of my new reality is the manifestation of Land of OM, LLC—a new spiritual community center in Overland Park, KS. May you fully align with your Spirit’s desire and may you manifest your dreams. Rev. Maitreya Zohar is currently living in Olathe, KS and is available for healing/energy sessions, readings, channelings and other lifetransforming opportunities. Aries (March 21 – April 19) You’re going to have insights into your relationship patterns. Enjoy being in your own skin. Work issues will become less stressful since you’ll have the clarity to resolve tangled situations. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) You’re likely starting a new relationship or rediscovering how much you love your current partner. It’s just a good time for you! The one trick is to remember your spiritual practices. It’s easy to reach out to the Universe when you feel desperate and miserable. It’s another to continue meditating, practicing yoga, etc, when you feel fantastic. It might be tempting to know your happiness will last longer if you connect with your soul each day. Most importantly, be aware of the old pattern beginning to creep in of getting bored and/or critical of your loved one when the intimacy gets intimidating! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) It’s a good time to make an investment in or improvement to your home. It’s important for you to feel secure in your home environment. An inexpensive method could be a major purge of what you call “stuff”, and others call “crap”. Get rid of junk and you’ll real-

ize how much it held you back and held you down. It’s strange, but having less house clutter will create more room in your heart to trust others and feel more loved. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You’ll have a blossoming in the relationship department. A new love can come to you or you’ll feel reawakened appreciation for your current partner. Begin a gratitude journal with your loved one. Each person can write a positive thing about the other each day. You can also meditate together, practice yoga, walk in nature or do some other type of spiritual work as a team. If single, keep an affirmation journal for yourself so you will draw the positive person you’re seeking. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Meditate on money and your thoughts about finances. It’s a great time to clear out negative messages about money inherited from family or that have built up in your own consciousness. Try to avoid the media and the economic fears it is accentuating. Read books on spirituality and prosperity. You have a chance to draw in plenty of funds if your mind is open to receive! Cleanse your mind, open your heart and let the miracles happen!
