Dear Friend,
Conscious living can be scary. I’m reminded of a trip several years ago while working in Colorado. On the drive in, I went through a dangerous mountain pass. Because it was nighttime, I didn’t realize the danger and the drive was uneventful. On my return home during daylight hours, I saw the sharp turns and steep drop-offs that encompassed this part of the journey. I became very afraid. What I eventually realized was that neither the road, nor the journey, had changed. There was the same danger and potential for fear both trips. But on the return trip, fully awake, I clearly saw the potential danger and felt a mind-numbing fear. However, my awareness didn’t change reality: It was the same road and passage whether I traveled in the dark or awake. Transitions in life are similar. No matter how hard a particular phase may be, whether job loss, empty nest, death or illness, the pain or pleasure we experience is in good part based on our perception of what we consider “reality.” My hope is that the articles on life’s transitions in this issue will help you on your journey and to possibly see that a pass through a mountain is only as scary as your perceive it.

News... Sage Center for Yoga & Healing Arts Opens in Crossroads Nestled in the urban crux of the Crossroads District, the recently opened Sage Center for Yoga & Healing Arts is a sanctuary for the mind and body. With services designed to restore, rejuvenate and invigorate, Dr. Sarah Kucera and a team of massage therapists, yoga teachers and chiropractors address health holistically and comprehensively. Sage was formerly known as Kansas Siddhi Yoga under the ownership of internationally known yoga teacher Gina Caputo. Caputo relocated to Colorado this year but maintains a deep relationship with Sage. Kucera, who already had a flourishing chiropractic practice within the studio, assumed leadership and fully integrated her business with the studio. Kucera studied extensively under Caputo and carries forth Caputo’s legacy of expert and intuitive yoga teaching while adding a constellation of wellness services to antidote the maladies magnified by city life. Staff additions of massage therapists Molly Root and Natalie Hoskins as well as chiropractor Whitney Shoults round out the Sage kula, or family, and its diverse menu of treatments in addition to a full yoga
class schedule. The reborn Sage reflects Kucera’s own approach to health as a result of the mind and body functioning in concert and harmoniously thriving. Her passion for Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of natural medicine that is rapidly gaining popularity in the West, has blossomed into a full offering of Ayurvedic consultations and treatments. Recognizing that each individual requires a unique balance in diet and lifestyle factors to maintain health, Ayurveda — often called yoga’s “sister science” — aims to restore harmony in the body when seasonal changes, stress, and other events cause imbalances. Kucera holds a degree as a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner through the Mount Madonna Institute in California. She received her degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas and her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City. She and the Sage family look forward to offering health, wholeness and vibrancy to the Kansas City community. www.experiencesage.com

News... Walking the Labyrinth
LunaBella Labyrinth Walk. Breathe. Pray. Receive. What is a Labyrinth and How Do You Walk It? We walk the labyrinth in silence, respecting one another’s private time in prayer. Call it a prayer walk, meditation, think time or just a walk on sacred, stewarded land — you will feel burdens ease and fears quiet as you spiral in, then back out of the labyrinth. At its most basic level the labyrinth is a metaphor for the journey to the center of your deepest self and back out into the world with a broadened understanding of who you are. To walk the labyrinth is a metaphor in the physical, of taking an act of power: 1. Stating your intention to, or making your request of, the Universe as you spiral inward. What do you wish to let go of, receive, pray for, become more of, etc.? 2. Listening for and receiving your wisdom, information, illumination, answer or blessing from within the center. Stay here as long as you wish. 3. Acknowledging that all is now unfolding in divine timing, and offering up heartfelt gratitude as you wind your way back out into the “real world.” In other words — here you may take time to find “that still small voice within.” Here all are welcome. Contemplation is a vital part of every tradition on the planet, and we honor the wisdom of all traditions. There are many ways to walk and many ways to pray. Allow yourself your way. There is no “right” way. If you want to cry, allow yourself the tears; if you want to laugh, allow that as well; each
person reacts to the labyrinth differently. It may not be a “feel good” or moving experience for everyone every time, but as you stick with it — returning over time — it will change you, and you will come to find your peace. About LunaBella Labyrinth LunaBella Labyrinth is of the 11circuit medieval design — a la that found in Chartres Cathedral in France and numerous places elsewhere — and thought to date back to at least 1000 C.E. (~1000 years B.C.). It is said that one purpose of a labyrinth has been to allow those who couldn’t make a long pilgrimage to a sacred site meaningful to them...to be able to do so on a smaller scale in a place more convenient. It was constructed with love and intention by Joan Clark and David Bartholomew at LunaBella, on Sat/Sun, May 5-6, 2012...and is a fulfillment of a steady push given to them by the universe many years back. The total walk from beginning to end is approximately three-quarters of a mile and it occupies a circle of approximately one hundred feet in diameter. What it weighs on a given day...depends on what you ate the night before. They look forward to the hearts of many adding their blessings and mojo unto this path, enabling all future walkers to draw from an increasing reservoir of love, support and healing. The LunaBella Labyrinth is located in Lawrence, KS. Visit www.joanclark.com for more information.

Let’s Get Naked—by Heidi Alfrey Playing with the Inner Child
L
isten to the Child within and your Genius will be revealed! What did you enjoy doing as a child? What was joyful; what felt natural? It’s hard to believe in a world that focuses so much on “growing up” that what you intuitively loved as a young person can often be the map to the road of true success. As a spiritual therapist for the last 15 years, I’ve witnessed the importance of revisiting one’s childhood as a tool for revealing one’s life purpose; but, it is rarely an easy sell. The usual derogatory comment is… “Oh, I just loved that as a kid, but I could never make a living doing that.” Somehow we’ve been taught that connection to one’s gifts and passions can’t co-exist with financial prosperity. Nothing could be further from the truth. This month’s “naked” article is a story of a man, after living a life of “pretending” to be what he thought the world wanted him to be, he broke down with exhaustion and then broke through to the life-giving power of his authenticity. Young Tim Colley loved to write greeting cards to friends and family, expressing the endearing qualities he recognized in them or reminiscing about past times together. The recipient would often comment, “Timmy, I love getting your cards, they always make me cry...you say the sweetest things.” Tim felt elated that the activity he enjoyed provided such great joy to others. That encouragement did not exist in many other areas of Tim’s life. Being sensitive and creative was not celebrated at Tim’s school. Most of the boys did not enjoy school and were pushing, shoving and being unkind to each other and to Tim. Excelling in academics was not helpful either — he was teased and over the years it seemed that this talent of creative writing was more of a hindrance than an asset. So Tim started to cover up the most important aspect of his life...himself! So many people live in this way, having an early story of shame around the gift and talent that we are here on the planet to share. We wonder why depression, anger and frustration are so prevalent. It is really not that big of a big mystery when you consider it in this way. Tim’s journey as “not-Tim” took him into some dark places, denial of his true sexual orientation, a lifeless vocation and after many years, not surprisingly, Tim felt suicidal. It is always darkest before the dawn… and during this “lost time” in a conversation with a counselor, Tim was asked, “What do you want?” In that moment, he realized his response to that question EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

had always been based on what he thought others wanted to hear. The gift of his creativity had been so deeply buried that its life-giving qualities had produced the feeling of not wanting to live. What an insight: To stay alive I MUST connect to that which brings a sense of personal value and worth! What Tim wanted was to feel alive. Isn’t that what we all want? I met Tim at this time because on every encounter, he would launch into a story of a line of greeting cards he was creating and how excited he was to open a store for people to feel uplifted by these messages. Immediately I was inspired by his clarity and passion. Even though he did not know exactly how it was going to happen, he knew it would. I’ve watched this incredible dream unfold for Tim over the past five years. Tim’s inspiration, Bird Sings, has grown into a greeting card manufacturer, inspirational gift store and seminar center — and is appropriately located on the lovely Country Club Plaza. Bird Sings exudes love, inspiration and the inescapable importance of heart-centered living. Tim and his partner, Angel Salcedo, keep the store’s inventory new and invigorating featuring many artists’ works. Give yourself a gift and drop by Bird Sings...your Inner Child deserves to play and the world needs you to remember who you are! Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. Cycles: Chaos or Calm “We never step in the same river twice.” —Heraclitus “Nothing endures but change.” —Diogenes Laertius
C
hange is the nature of life, often manifested in recurring cycles. The evolutionary nature of change challenges us to be in a constantly flowing universe — both inner and outer. We are dealing with our personal transitions, those of people around us, the society in which we live, nature, the earth, planets and stars — life itself! Well, that is just a lot of change. The hard part is that we are so aware of the subjective change of ourselves and have become more aware of external change through education, news, media of all kinds and instant worldwide communication. We may feel powerless to effect change with so much happening. The good part is that both cultural traditions and science concur that everything is connected and that a change in one part of the universe effects change in everything else. In the poetic realm, Walt Whitman writes about interconnectedness, “I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey work of the stars.” In Buddhist terms, Daisaku Ikeda writes, “The great universe and the self — the great macrocosm and the microcosm — are one. Since the self and all phenomena are one, all things are interrelated. Termed dependent origination, this teaching explains that all things weave a singe whole in which individuals live in relation to all others.”
David Bohm, an American-born British quantum physicist, explains it this way, “…we say that inseparable quantum interconnectedness of the whole universe is the fundamental reality, and that relatively independent behaving parts are merely particular and contingent forms within this whole.” He encourages dialogue between people and groups as essential to making a change in the whole. Interesting that a modern day scientist mirrors the philosophies that are thousands of years old. What does this mean for us as we face change, cycles and transitions in and around us? If we begin with the belief
that everything is connected then we know that any action we take will have significant effects on a personal as well as a universal level. I read this quote from Anne Frank recently which really put this philosophy into perspective. “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Terry Gross, interviewing David Rakoff on NPR, described his writings as a “festival of negativity.” He was a humorist and author who wrote about challenging circumstances with great humor. I must say that my brain sometimes has its very own “festival of negativity” as I face the challenges of change. Personal problems sometimes feel huge, amplified as I look at tsunamis, global warming, the economic slump, the Midwest drought, all my friends’ problems and it goes on and on. I pull myself back from the precipice by remembering that I need only to live this moment and that this is not only good enough, but is a courageous thing to do. The trite sayings are often true and one of those is about being in the moment, savoring its joy, sorrow, peace and

power! When you find yourself overwhelmed by the many challenges in your life and the world around you, remember the power of the moment and the interconnectedness of the universe. Your single moment can change your life and the life of others. Then, perhaps we can do as Anne Frank suggests and not wait a single second to make the changes we want to see, creating peace and calm from the chaos of change. Holistic Medicine—by Nancy Russell, M.D. Is SUGAR a Sweet Old Friend?
I
s sugar a sweet old friend that is secretly plotting your demise? There is a vast sea of research suggesting that it is. Sugar, in your food, in all its myriad forms, can take a devastating toll on your health. Joseph Mercola, M.D. discusses sugar in detail on his website, www.mercola.com. The single largest source of calories for Americans comes from sugar, much of it in the form of high fructose corn syrup. Just take a look at the sugar consumption trends of the past 300 years. • In 1700, the average person consumed about 4 pounds of sugar per year. • In 1800, the average person consumed about 18 pounds of sugar per year. • In 1900, individual consumption had risen to 90 pounds of sugar per year. • In 2009, more than 50 percent of all Americans consume one-half pound of sugar PER DAY — that is a whopping 180 pounds of sugar per year. Sugar is loaded into your soft drinks, fruit juices, sports drinks and hidden in almost all processed foods — from bologna to pretzels to Worcestershire sauce and cheese spread. Most infant formulas have the sugar equivalent of one can of CocaCola…so babies are being metabolically
poisoned from day one if taking formula. In Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D.’s book, Beat Sugar Addiction Now, he explains four types of sugar addiction and gives a step-by -step workbook approach on how to remedy each situation. Dr. Teitelbaum explains the health consequences of sugar addiction: sugar increases both insulin and leptin levels and decreases receptor sensitivity for these vital hormones. This can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and premature aging. It is easy to become confused by the various sugars and sweeteners, so here is a basic overview: Dextrose, fructose and glucose are all monosaccharides, known as simple sugars. The primary difference between them is how your body metabolizes them. Glucose and dextrose are essentially the same sugar. However, food manufacturers usually use the term “dextrose” in their ingredient list. The simple sugars can combine to form more complex sugars, like sucrose, which is table sugar and is half glucose and half fructose. High fructose corn syrup is 55 percent fructose and 45 percent glucose. Ethanol (drinking alcohol) is not a
sugar, although beer and wine contain residual sugars and starches, in addition to alcohol. Sugar alcohols like xylitol, glycerol, sorbitol, maltitol, and erythritol are neither sugars nor alcohols but are becoming popular as sweeteners. They are incompletely absorbed from your intestine; so, they provide fewer calories than sugar but can cause gas, bloating and sometimes diarrhea. Sucralose (Splenda) is not a sugar. It is a chlorinated artificial sweetener in line with aspartame and saccharin, with potential detrimental health effects. There are three natural sweeteners that can be used and generally tolerated well. You can substitute these natural, healthier alternatives for refined sugars. The first is agave nectar or syrup. Agave is a high-nutrient sweetener that does not contain any processed chemicals, best in its raw version (completely unprocessed) as it contains vitamins and minerals. Next is honey, best in its raw form, a good sweetener with many health benefits including antioxidant qualities. Another is stevia; a highly sweet herb which is safe, helps balance blood sugar, contains no calories and aids in digestion. Other good substitutes for refined sugar are brown rice
syrup, maple syrup and molasses. To begin your journey to being healthier, eat plenty of raw vegetables and some fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes and (if desired) small amounts of lean meats, dairy and grains. If you are not feeling optimally well, take a trial diet off of sugar, dairy and grains for at least four weeks and see how you feel. A good resource guide to this program is a book called, Special Diet Solutions, Healthy cooking without wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, yeast, or refined sugars. If you would like assistance on your journey to optimal health, you are welcome to visit my medical office for a consultation visit. See coupon on the back cover. Nancy Russell, M.D. is a holistic Internal medicine physician and has practiced in the Kansas City northland for 30 years. eeling separate from love, feeling separate from your spirit, feeling more negative rather than positive, may mean your negative ego is blinding you. The search engine on being free of ego revealed almost 31,000,000 sites. A hot topic indeed. Now I know a 500 word column may lack substance, but I will do my best. We have a negative and positive ego and it serves as our eye to the world. We view the “maya” or illusions of our reality. Our job is to place that information, once delivered by the ego, in a context. It’s complex. Many things go wrong. Responsibility When I hear how a person is blaming the world, the boss, the stars, the gossip, I know being responsible is a missing link. The self talk may be: If this did not happen; if that person had not hurt me. Now, pretend for a moment your boss or partner or
parent told you to take over responsibilities that belonged to them and you knew you could not handle them. So you feel inadequate and esteem falls and self worth is questioned. You may feel frustrated, anxious, frightened and perhaps angry. Maybe you would feel sorry for yourself. Real panic sets in...as now you will get “blamed” for messing up and it’s not your fault. It takes maturity, wisdom and a strong act of will to overcome this. Think about this. Have you felt this way? Choice At every moment, even as you read this, are you choosing fear or love? Most of us dance with both feelings throughout the day. I’m really conscious of it. The inhale in yoga (Puraka) is intended to absorb hope, love and life. The exhale (Rechakra) gives peace and calm. With the pause or the Kumbaka (base of exhale) we gain equanimity and

Steadfastness How do you remember the love? The line itself feels sophomoric. How do you? That’s why we as yogis are committed to our daily prayer or meditation with God and love and our souls and spirits. After time, the love affair with this quiet time is habit. Judith Hansen Lasater, famous for her restorative yoga says, “We say we don’t have time.” Now I understand her point. Do you not have time to give five minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes to devote to your spirit, your esteem, your high self, your love? ave you ever wondered what it means to know your own soul? How about to align with your highest self and live your purpose? This is the journey that begins within; and as your inner world shifts, the outer world follows suit. The Akashic Record journey encompasses all aspects of who you are and how you interact in the world from the perspective of truth. In the Akashic Records, you may explore: life transitions, relationships, career, finances, health, ancestral patterns and past lives to name a few. So, what are the Akashic Records? The Sanskrit root word, “Akasha,” means “primary substance” or that out of which all things come into being. They are a soul level spiritual resource, which are open and available to everyone. The Record is a vibrational library, or computer system, of infinite archives that is accessible in another dimension and upholds the purpose of supporting us with the energy and wisdom to have a more conscious relationship with our soul. The Records are completely nondenominational, and all who seek them are welcome. In fact, most religions reference the Akashic Records, such as The Book of Life in Christianity. Working in the Akashic Records advances us into a knowing of our existence from a divine perspective. There are some misinterpretations regarding the Akashic Records. They are not a resource to be feared, judged or resisted. Instead, the Records contain the energy, wisdom and truth behind any circumstance, situation or relationship, with the express purpose of elevating the individual beyond their current obstacle and placing them in harmony with their highest self. The energy and information is clear, yet presented gently and from a place of love. There is no competition in the Records. Like many yoga practices, one works at one's own pace and comfort level. Many equate past lives to the Akashic Records; and, past-life information is certainly contained within the Records. However, the Records are not a mixedup soup of fascinating past lives to be shared at parties. Past lives will present if an issue the individual is having in present day life is rooted in a past life. If appropriate, the energy and wisdom come forth with the healing, understanding, peace and joy that the individual needs to rise beyond the old pattern or problematic thought form. Additionally, the belief of reincarnation is not a requisite. Anyone, regardless of their belief system, may benefit from working with the Akashic Records. Historically, the Akashic Records

were the province of Saints, Priests and Priestesses — their access kept secret. In the last century, the Records were brought into public awareness by Edgar Cayce, who would enter a trance-like state to convey the information. And now, while there are many ways to access the Records, they are accessible through fully conscious states and reliable methodologies. One such method is known as the “Pathway Prayer Process,” created by Linda Howe of the Center for Akashic Studies in September of 2001. This process takes the practitioner, and/ or individual, directly into the heart of the Akashic Records. The primary focus is to access the heart or center of love within the Records and work from there. Working in the Akashic Records is interactive and experiential. Preparing questions in advance of having a session or opening your own Records sets the intention. The most beneficial questions are those around areas of your life where you feel stuck or challenged, as well as questions around situations that simply don’t make sense. During a session, the individual’s telling of their story or situation sets the groundwork. From there, one gains an understanding of the causes, conditions and soul level truth of the issue. Many have experienced the benefits the Akashic Records can add to their individual journey or to other systems or practices including counseling, body work, energy work, yoga and business. During this time of planetary transition into higher consciousness and dimensional shifting, the Akashic Records are an accessible and reliable resource for spiritual growth and development. Why not get to know yourself better? Your soul is waiting!

ccording to Robert F. Moss (food writer & historian), fried green tomatoes are apparently not a Southern dish. By all accounts, they entered the American culinary scene in the Northeast and Midwest, perhaps with a link to Jewish immigrants. From there, the dish moved onto the menu of the homeeconomics school of cooking teachers who flourished in the United States in the early-to-mid 20th century. It appears that the 1992 release of the movie popularized what has come to be regarded as a southern comfort dish. No matter its origin, it’s still simple and good. Executive Chef Charles d’Ablaing tops his Fried Green Tomatoes with Shallot Braised Chicken Breast, Arugula and Sauce Bercy. et’s continue last month’s discussion of “Standard American Healthy Diet,” a way of eating promoted by the food industry and popular media. It’s typically composed of white meat, cheese, Greek yoghurt, packaged whole grain products, fruit, and very few vegetables. Standard American Healthy eaters know white sugar and high fructose corn syrup are bad so they favor Nutri-sweet, Splenda, xylitol, agave and stevia. On the onehand, it’s a step forward — people have gotten the message that whole grains are better than processed and red meat is linked to heart disease and cancer. Followers of Standard American Healthy think they are doing something to prevent chronic disease, but most of them will end up in an oncologist’s office or in the cardiac cath lab, if they are lucky. Standard American Healthy isn’t healthy enough. Here’s more on how you can improve upon it.
green vegetables by now. Retreat from Sweet! Our taste for sweet foods once ensured the survival of our species. Sweet foods naturally grow during summer, and easily convert to fat, which was needed to survive the winter when food was scarce. To this day anything that tastes sweet signals the body to store fat. Thank goodness we don’t have to starve during winter, but to stay healthy we need to recognize that our metabolism still lives in the Stone Age. Studies have shown that artificial sweeteners increase appetite, cause more weight gain and slow the body’s metabolic rate more than white sugar does. Stevia is promoted as a sweetener diabetics can use because it isn’t absorbed by the digestive tract. I question this. The signal to store fat starts in the mouth, triggered by the taste of sweet — before the food is even swallowed. I would use stevia sparingly, and instead, tame your taste for sweet with six servings of green vegetables daily! Now you know how to move beyond Standard American Healthy to take real steps to truly improve your health. This article is the third in a series which began in July. You can find all three articles in the blog se ct ion of www.bethanyklug.com.
Think Vegetables First! The observation that most people say “fruits and vegetables” instead of “vegetables and fruits” reflects what I see in my practice: people favor fruit over vegetables and think they are interchangeable. Not so. Vegetables have all the nutritional benefits of fruit, but not vice versa. Most people experience a giant step forward in their health when they eat six fist-sized or fist-full servings of vegetables daily, especially green ones. Avoiding fruit, especially tropical fruit, can normalize blood sugar and promote weight loss. This is because our metabolism is Bethany Klug is a physician for whom food is a doorway to programmed to store fat when personal, community and we eat sweet foods. Books 7 Keys to Lifelong Sexual Vitality An interview with Drs. Brian and Anna Maria Clement
D
r. Brian R. Clement and Dr. Anna Maria Clement are certified nutritionists, medical doctors, and health counselors who lecture on health, healing, and longevity before thousands each year. They live in West Palm Beach, FL and are the authors of 7 Keys to Lifelong Sexual Vitality.
Why is sex healthy? Sex is healthy for a number of reasons. We have seen firsthand at Hippocrates Health Institute that people in committed relationships who maintain sexual intimacy have three times the chance of achieving their health recovery goals. The physical benefits of sex include higher levels of hormonal activity, allowing the body to grow healthier and stronger. The hormonal symphony that arises from the sexual act, particularly in a committed relationship, instills an unsurpassed vitality. As you and an intimate partner age together, the continued biochemical exchange of sexual union will fortify your health and extend your life. How does your diet affect your sex life? There has always been a close relationship between food and sex. A poor diet, consumption of highly processed foods and lack of exercise can lead to sexual problems. Unfortunately, many young couples experience fertility issues and many young men experience impotence. In addition to one’s diet, chemicals and radioactivity in our environment can also negatively affect one’s sexual ability.
before being sexually intimate, you will most likely experience greater arousal. Are men or women more expressive about their sexual needs? This depends on the culture that you grow up in. For instance, in America, when females are young, they are less likely to express themselves sexually since they will be looked down upon. High school can be unforgiving to girls who are more open with their sexuality, whereas, for a young man, having sex is considered a coming of age. Additionally, women don’t peak sexually until their 30s and 40s, which reflects their sexual desires and needs. Hundreds of women have said that sex is more satisfying after menopause (partly because women are concerned about pregnancy when they have sex in their earlier life). What are some ways to detox your body to energize your sexuality? Everyone who stays at Hippocrates Health Institute as a guest has an opportunity to detox their body fat and organs of synthetic chemical toxins. The main eight detox techniques that we recommend to energize your sexuality are exercise, far-infrared saunas, fasting, supplements, colon hydrotherapy, therapeutic drainage massage, pure water and wheatgrass and green drink juice. All of these will regenerate and heal one’s body.
Can you explain about the brain's love chemical and how to train it? The hormone oxytocin (latin for “quick birth”) allows us to bond with other people and fall in love. We release large amounts of this hormone when we have an orgasm; mothers release it when breastfeeding and some women are given a small amount of it to promote contractions during childbirth. Ways to train and release the chemical on a regular basis are by making love, receiving massages and participating in mind/body exercises likes yoga.
Describe a sexually active mind. How can you keep your mind sexually active? Your imagination and dreams can keep your mind active, no matter your age. A sexually active mind experiences sexual arousal and even orgasms during sleep. Both men and women can use sexual imagery to benefit their mind, body and soul. Beyond “wet dreams” during the night, people can become physically aroused by a sexual fantasy at any time of the day. By using the powerful placebo effect, people can use visualization and guided imagery to bring about cellular and chemical changes in the body. Over time, everyone can train their mind to do this and it’s a great way to promote one’s sexual well-being.
What are the best nutrients/ supplements for maximizing sexual vitality? Some of the best nutrients for maximizing sexual vitality are natural aphrodisiacs like nutmeg, clove, apricots, zucchini, tomato seeds, lettuce and lentil sprouts. If you consume these nutrients

Feature—by Tim Freke 3 Simple Steps to Spiritually Awaken in Your Everyday Life
S
pirituality teaches us how to transform our state of consciousness, so that we feel really alive. It is easy to get so caught up in our daily dramas that we become consumed by worry. To deal with the pressures, we often numb ourselves to the intensity of living--which means we miss the joy of simply being. When we "spiritually awaken," however, we cast off the numbness we call "normal" and truly appreciate the world around us. And then life becomes WOW! Here are 3 simple steps to help you transform your state of consciousness. 1. Remember to wonder. We are living in wonderland. But, usually we don't notice that! The easiest way to spiritually awaken is to remember to wonder...to look at the world around us with new eyes...to see things as if for the first time and the last time. Dennis Potter, the British playwright, gave a moving interview shortly before he died of cancer. He shared the wonder that arises in the face of imminent death. Have a look at this and get what he is trying to tell us. "…at this season, the blossom is out in full now, there in the west early. It's a plum tree, it looks like apple blossom but it's white, and looking at it, instead of saying, 'Oh that's nice blossom' ... last week looking at it through the window when I'm writing, I see it is the whitest, frothiest, blossomest blossom that there ever could be, and I can see it. "Things are both more trivial than they ever were, and more important than they ever were, and the difference between the trivial and the important doesn't seem to matter. "But the nowness of everything is
absolutely wondrous, and if people could see that, you know. There's no way of telling you; you have to experience it, but the glory of it, if you like, the comfort of it, the reassurance… The fact is, if you see the present tense, boy do you see it! And boy can you celebrate it." Life is WOW and Dennis Potter could see that as he was dying. But why wait until you’re dying? Now is WOW if you open up to it. Just take a moment to really wonder. As the American author Ray Bradbury says: "Stuff your eyes with wonder...live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories." 2. Enter the mystery of the moment. Life is a breath-taking mystery. We are alive and we don't know what life is! That's truly astonishing. Yet most of the time we become so embroiled with the story that we tell ourselves about life, that we don't notice the deep mystery of existence. We live as if we know what is going on, when actually life is an enormous enigma. To spiritual awaken, we need to step out of the story and into the mystery. We can do this by entering a state of "knowing and notknowing." This means recognizing that on the surface of life we may 'know' a lot of things; yet also appreciating that deep down--life is utterly mysterious and miraculous. A simple way to do this is to focus on the present moment. When we do this our state of consciousness spontaneously changes because we come out of the story and into the mystery. This is because the story exists in time. The story is how we understand life with thoughts. And thoughts are a sequence of words in time. You can
To spiritual awaken, we need to step out of the story and into the mystery. We can do this by entering a state of "knowing and not-knowing." easily see this … if … you … read … this … sentence … slowly … because … you … don’t … know … what … I … am … going … to … say … until … the … sentence … ends. And that takes time. The story exists in time, so when we bring our attention into the present moment, there’s no story about the past and future. This can be a great relief. In the here and now we don’t understand life with words--we experience the mystery of the moment. 3. Become sensually alive. Spiritual awakening is intensely pleasurable, because we truly appreciate all we see and hear and touch in this world of wonders. When we're only superficially awake, we only partially feel the enjoyment available to us because we're partly numb. When we're "deep awake," we find ourselves really savouring the pleasures of life. The body wakes up to how sweet it is to be alive.

To spiritually awaken we need to open the doorway of wonder…step into the mystery of the moment… and become sensually alive. We need to relish the colors and sounds and feelings we are experiencing. And, as we do, they become rich and vibrant. The world starts to sparkle. There is an experience of profound gratitude that arises when we see how glorious life really is. Tim Freke has an honors degree in philosophy and is the author of many groundbreaking books, including his newest, The Mystery Experience: A Revolutionary Approach to Spiritual Awakening. Freke runs “mystery experience retreats” internationally, in which he guides others directly to a spiritually awakened state. He also performs as a “stand-up philosopher,” a concept he developed from the ancient idea of a philosopher as a traveling spiritual entertainer who transforms peoples consciousness. www.TheMysteryExperience.com.

I
know someone who locks her keys in the car whenever she’s in a hurry to get somewhere. Plane leaves in an hour? Her keys are in the car – potentially it’s running and her cell phone mocks her from its perch in the passenger seat. Important meeting? You guessed it … keys safely locked inside the car. Locking her keys in her car is just one symptom. She’s also been known to confuse her children’s names, her phone number and forget to pick up the aforementioned children from soccer practice. As a working mother she has a lot going on. Not only must she manage multiple schedules and myriad responsibilities, she also must handle stressors she may not even recognize. The human brain processes huge amounts of information from muscles. Such information is largely handled below the conscious level, so she may not notice it. Still, the information from her body floods her brain. Too many stressors and too much incoming information limit my friend’s ability to function well. She suffers from neurotic stupidity.
Neurotic stupidity is a failure to use the real capacity of our brain due to its being overloaded by information. • Neurotic stupidity manifests as a failure to process information needed to function well. • Symptoms of neurotic stupidity include missing important details, having needed information readily drop out of memory, failing to pick up on important social cues and loss of creative problem solving skills. • Multitasking and muscular tension are major sources of neurotic stupidity.
they are teaching her to look for peace. By learning to control her body’s response, she can control the information sent to her brain. Abdominal breathing is another opportunity for my friend to manage flood of information to her brain. By practicing abdominal breathing exercises, she’ll send more oxygen into her blood stream. The oxygen will improve the lactate levels in her blood and lower the lactic acid in her body. Lactic acid contributes to anxiety. A simple abdominal breathing exercise follows:
•
Unless she wants to spend more time locked out of her car while her children wait in vain, my friend needs to learn some techniques to handle that flood of information. The first and easiest thing she can do is add a brisk 30-minute walk to her day. There is growing evidence of an association between exercise and cognitive health. The brain begins to lose nerve tissue beginning at age 30. Aerobic exercise tends to reinforce neural connections by increasing the number of dendrite connections between neurons, creating a denser network. A dense network is better able to process and store information. Exercise may even aid with the production of new neurons. The good news
Symptoms of neurotic stupidity include missing important details, having needed information readily drop out of memory, failing to pick up on important social cues and loss of creative problem solving skills.
Place one hand your abdomen. When you take a deep breath in, the hand on your abdomen should rise as you inhale and fall as you exhale. You want to fill your entire lung with air. After exhaling through the mouth, take a slow deep breath in through your nose and hold it. Slowly exhale through your mouth. As all the air is released with relaxation, gently contract your abdominal muscles to completely evacuate the remaining air from the lungs. Remember, respiration deepens not by inhaling more air but through completely exhaling it. Repeat the cycle four more times for a total of five deep breaths and try to breathe at a rate of one breath every 10 seconds (or six breaths per minute). If she learns to manage her stress and tension, my friend might remember when her daughter’s next soccer game is.
for my friend? The neurological effect of exercise is largest if started in middle age. Other strategies to combat neurotic stupidity include meditation and breathing exercises. My friend gets tense when confronted with daily bumps in the road – the clerk at the DMV, a telemarketer who interrupts dinner and the near daily war her children wage over whose turn it is to sit in the front seat of the car. An insight meditation could help. If she imagines those same situations as an opportunity for enlightenment, she can change her body’s response. The clerk at the DMV? He was put on earth to teach her patience. The caller who interrupts your dinner? Her job is to teach my friend kindness. The bickering children? Well obviously,

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels September 2012 Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Happy birthday Virgo! You’ll have insights about relationships. Meditation, journaling and inner reflection help you see subconscious patterns. Don’t get hung up on each specific example – just work on forgiving yourself and others, so you can be free from the entire cycle! Instead of criticizing yourself, be grateful that you are evolved enough to “pull out inner weeds”. Be happy with present and future results rather than dwelling on old hurts and heartbreaks. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Meditate and journal about your dreams. You’ll receive guidance about old issues – especially concerning family of origin stuff. If you forget your dreams, ask for insights in meditation – and look for answers throughout your day. You could also get to the root of longstanding health challenges by seeing the spiritual lesson your soul wants you to learn. Also, seek out new friends, or connect with old pals for play time! Be with people who love what you love, so you don’t end up pleasing others. Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You’ll have a work-related “goodie” – a raise, promotion, new job offer. You’ll also be feeling quite happy. Make sure to surround yourself with other upbeat folks. Don’t be negatively affected by other people’s dramas! Seek out someone interested in meditation, power of positive thinking, or affirmations. You can support each other when you have dips in the road. Stop retreating within when challenges come. Build the bond now, so your pal won’t let you run away later!
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) You’re going to have improvements with finances! Meditate on prosperity so you can attract money – and also be guided as to how to best use that money! The timing is right to make important changes, so have those goals be the top priority rather than splurging on whimsical things. You might make a new friend at work who also has spiritual ideas about money and prosperity. Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) You’ll have major improvements in relationships and intimacy! Pluto moved direct in your sign, helping you feel at peace about parts of your subconscious that unearthed and released. It will feel safer and more appealing to be close to your loved ones, your own self and to your spiritual source. You’ll also find financial improvements, because increasing your level of trust increases your prosperity!
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Like your Capricorn friends, you’ll

have big changes in relationships. You could be starting a new relationship – or are entering a new level in your current partnership. Be open about your “issues”. Exposing yourself emotionally does cause vulnerability, but also bonds you more deeply. Try meditating each day with your partner – or maybe doing some yoga postures or deep breathing exercises. Also watch for messages from dreams! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) It’s time to come out of isolation! Connect with friends who have your hobbies and interests. Share with your partner what has been going on in the depths of your soul. Renew your commitment to meditation to strengthen your link with Spirit. For Pisces, when you withdraw, it is often due to shame. Forgive yourself for being in the process of soul evolution – you’re not perfect yet – but we all still love you and want to be with you! Aries (March 21 – April 19) New relationship possibilities are coming for you! You’ll have more time for fun with your current love, or you’ll meet someone new. You’ll also be happy because work problems will be solved and you might even get a raise or promotion. Enjoy your confidence and enthusiasm. If you’re an animal lover, it’s a great time to get a pet – or to spend time bonding with the creatures already in your life! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) When things are difficult, it’s easy to feel the Universe has abandoned you or that God doesn’t care. But this month, you’ll have breakthroughs in meditation so you experience a deep connection with Spirit. You’ll be able to see the wisdom of events in your life, and see ways out of tricky karma so things are smooth again! When you feel all alone, it’s because the Universe sees that you’re smart and capable enough to discover your own answers. Your Teachers and Guides are by your side even if they seem quiet. You don’t need spoon-feeding, and that’s exciting! You’re a powerful soul continuing to evolve in wisdom! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) It’s time to trust more in relationships. Forgive the past and be fully in the present moment in an optimistic way. Open up to your partner about fears, and ask for help to move beyond them. If single, meditate with a spiritually-

minded friend who knows your past and concerns. Together you can visualize a future of fulfillment. Also use this line of thinking with financial or debt issues. Better things are coming! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Meditate to release negative images of yourself! People see you as wonderful – you’re the one that is critical. As you let go of false ideas, you’ll be open to receive love, since you’ll know in your heart that you’re lovable! This makes a current relationship better, or attracts a new, healthy bond! Finances are also good. Treat yourself to something you love – a new outfit; a trip to the museum; a decadent meal at a classy restaurant. Nurture yourself and even more blessings will stream towards you! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Praise your body – whatever its shape or size! If your body struggles, it could be you’re overloading it with challenges. Meditate on how you can take better care of your body temple. Maybe you could eat better; cut back on coffee; practice deep breathing for serenity and cleansing. Find a way to ease up on your body as you would lighten the burden for a beloved friend. You’ll find your intuition flourishes and you’ll feel balance and bliss!
