The Far-Reaching Influence of America’s “Sleeping Prophet” Edgar Cayce

Dear Friend, As an editor, you know you have a special issue on your hands—or a special publication overall—when certain words or phrases or ideas appear in more than one story. Especially when these stories are about entirely unrelated subjects, written by people in different fields, with very different styles. I see it as synchronicity. And while some people might be right to attribute this issue’s synchronicity to this month’s theme of New Directions (and how this theme unconsciously steered the writers into these similar ideas and phrases), I prefer to see it as evidence of something deeper. How is it, for instance, that Victoria Erhart’s story on labyrinths said that one of the keys to walking a labyrinth is to “Move out of headcentered intellect into more heart-centered wisdom,” and Astarte channeled advice on how to stay on one’s soul path as being “beneficial to discern what your mind is directing in your life and what your heart is steering in your life, and to know the difference,” and Heather Robertson stressed, in her column on how to harmonize life and work, that “The number one key is discovering the sacred bridge of knowledge (mind) and trust (heart)”? Coincidence? Is this recognition of heart and mind and how they affect our lives the underlying key to everything? Most likely. Is it then so weird that it would come up again and again and again? Maybe not. Nevertheless, it’s pretty cool. And, even cooler, to me it means that this direction Evolving is heading toward, this new direction is true and worthy. That there’s some deeper force (or forces) at play helping it to grow and move forward. That’s my hope, anyway. Because, certainly, Evolving in Santa Fe is a new direction for me. And for Jill as well. I’ve edited magazines, and written for them, but I’ve never overseen one from a business standpoint. And Jill, well, Jill’s not in Kansas anymore. Meaning: Santa Fe poses certain challenges, and has certain expectations, that’ll either force Jill and me to adapt and grow, or, well, discover things about ourselves we hadn’t known (or wanted to know) before now. Change, a new direction, is never easy. But we’re both hopeful that Evolving in Santa Fe continues to evolve and change and grow. For us and for you.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Becomes Destination for Wellness Retreats From January 16 to 19, 2015, Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe hosted a Wellness Retreat featuring Los Angeles-based master yoga instructor Jorge Luna. Showcasing a weekend of yoga, meditation, hiking, fitness and healthy cuisine, Four Seasons welcomed guests to enjoy two types of private classes per day, either fitness or yoga. With cuisine from Executive Chef Andrew Cooper, guests started the morning with healthy breakfasts

and ended the day with dinner at Terra, the Resort’s restaurant. “Participants had a wonderful time as they enjoyed the short distance to downtown Santa Fe but appreciated the serenity of the Resort, and most of all —the scenery,” commented Jorge Luna. “The movement studio, with its

incredible views of sunsets over the mesas, was the perfect setting for our yoga, fitness, and meditation classes.” With more wellness retreats planned for 2015 and beyond, the Resort offers guests outdoor excursions with its on-site Adventure Partners team, rejuvenation at the 10,000-square-foot (930 square meters) Spa, and transportation to the city of Santa Fe, which attracts visitors year-round with its museums, art galleries, Southwestern cuisine, and rich culture. “We look forward to more retreats at the Resort, as it possesses the magic combination of elements—the luxury of the Four Seasons brand; delicious cuisine by a talented, award-winning chef; proximity to Santa Fe; and outdoor adventure, from hiking to cycling and star gazing,” said Luna. The Resort will welcome guests for the next wellness retreat in the fall, October 9 through 12, again with Jorge Luna. Reservations can be booked online.

Our Wounds Are Our Medicine

Y

our body holds your life’s secrets: every time you’ve been hurt, traumatized, overwhelmed, your body remembers. It remembers these wounds not in words but in tension patterns. The body remembers the reaction to the trauma or wounding and the energy state you were in when the stressful event occurred. This is key. Your energy state, whether low, neutral, or high will determine how you are able to cope with (or transform) your experience. If you were in a low energy state, where it felt like all you could do was survive, then you will perceive the event as traumatic. If you were in a resourceful energy state, then you might perceive the event as an opportunity. Your body assesses if it has enough energy to process the information of a stressful event. If the body doesn’t have enough energy to be present with whatever is happening, it will wall off the energy in a shortterm solution of protection. To be present with what is happening means to be able to experience the entirety of the stressful event, so that whatever you need to feel is felt. Emotions must be felt in order to create a behavior change. Energy in motion is E-motion and it’s important to be able to respond rapidly. If you are not able to respond authentically to e-motion, the energy is not resolved and therefore will be stored until you can be present with it. Ideally, if a stressful event occurs and you can be present with all the feelings and energies it creates, the e-motion passes through and has no need to be bound up or held in your body. However, when you don’t have the resources to feel everything you need to feel in the moment, the energy becomes walled off. Walling off the energy is a physical as well as emotional phenomenon. The muscles of your neck, back, and hips can contract. Your head may come forward and get locked into that position. The small ligaments and muscles in front of your vertebral column may tense, creating rigidity in your spine. This all happens in an effort to keep you protected in a time when you can’t process your experience. Over time, without resolution, this state leads to chronic and debilitating conditions. You know that you have bound energy when you feel tightness in your muscles, your posture is compromised, you’re fatigued, your head is positioned forward (defense posture), or when you can’t seem to recover from a condition. In this state, you are not

moving energy effectively through your spine and body. Our wounds are our medicine, the disease is the cure. You don’t heal from cancer, you heal through it; you don’t heal from migraines, asthma, irritable bowel, sciatica, chronic fatigue, cardio-vascular disease, anxiety, depression, you heal through those things. In order to heal through, you need energy. When your body is challenged with a disease, trauma, or chronic illness, it looks for any available energy to heal. If there is not enough energy, the body shuts down functions, downgrades your life experience. This wisdom allows the body to survive—a great short-term strategy, but in the long term one with a very high cost. Where do we get this essential energy we need to heal? One very significant way is the energy that is stored in our body from our wounds, in our musculature, bones, ligaments, which is called BOUND energy. This bound energy, the tension patterns from old traumas, is what can be liberated and utilized to help you heal. A powerful way to access bound energy for transformation is to be present in your body with your experience. The moment you are truly present, the body releases the bound-up energy. And when you are present with the truth that your body shares with you, you can receive its wisdom, become more whole and heal.

To be present with what is happening means to be able to experience the entirety of the stressful event, so that whatever you need to feel is felt.

Harmonizing Life and Work

T

he idea of work-life balance first came about in Europe in the 1800s, entered the US during the Great Depression, then gained solid footing in the 60s and 70s when women were asking for support in the workplace while being a mother and an employee. During the 1990s, with the birth of large-scale technology and dual working households, the idea of work-life balance exploded. It has been a push-button issue ever since. This is a hot topic for some and an overdone topic for others. I have discovered, though, through working with clients, that it’s not as simple as cultivating balance. Rather, it’s a rediscovering of harmony in life and business— rediscovering a deeper, more sustainable place within us, within our hearts. Our efforts at a work-life balance have historically come through compartmentalization: calendars, list builders, phone apps. It’s as if we’ve said, “Let’s be in our minds now and our hearts later.” Not realizing that that attitude is really the root cause of our chaos. To be clear, I love calendars, lists, and all the rest. However, when they are used mindlessly, fragmentation and overwhelm can set in. Life and work harmony requires the awareness of our hearts and minds continuously, finding the real ground that unites. The number one key is discovering the sacred bridge of knowledge (mind) and trust (heart). When the two are working harmoniously life and business tend to flow and opportunities open. We can trust all day long, but if one lacks the knowledge of resources, relationships, or information, trust doesn’t really serve us. On the flipside, we can have an abundance of knowledge, but if we don’t trust ourselves or others the knowledge does very little for us. The union between the two is the key to harmony and will cause any business to flourish for the long-term. Bridge your inner knowing with your inner trust and you will find the solutions you seek to life and work harmony. You will discover what you need and it will be up to you to leap and embrace what is needed for change. It begins with choice. Decisions made through trust and knowledge can be applied to your thoughts, your perceptions, your choices with business collaborations, your choices with how you spend your beautifully earned money, your choice with how you want to feel and be in the world and with others. This will transform your business and expand it. The outcome is less worry and a lot more fun! In my work I discuss the “5 Roots.” The

Heart & Business

primary root is well-being. Well-being is the heartbeat of all you do and the place to start for life and work harmony. Discover the tools to maintain and evolve your mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being and you are more than on your way—you’re “in it,” and you will be in a harmonious life before you know it. To get the ball moving with well-being, trust, and knowledge here are a few suggestions: 1. Whatever it is, don’t do it alone. We thrive together. 2. Sleep: 56 percent of Americans say that dreams reveal deep truths! 3. Be gentle with yourself. 4. Breathe: Breathe in trust and breathe out worry. 5. Commit: Cultivate your willpower, your fire. 6. Patience: When your buttons get pushed practice patience. 7. Give more: Give with no expectation in return. 8. Receive more: Let it in. Today. 9. Be vulnerable: Open the door. 10. Let go: Step back, take in the big picture, and determine your next steps. 11. Engage thoughtfully: All great achievements involve this. 12. Do something to crack your heart open and connect. 13. Forgive. Now. 14. Own what you believe with compassion. Your heart will thank you for it. 15. Love.

Wild Spring Foods

W

orried about what you will grow and eat this year with our water shortage? Relax! Our Great Mother Earth always provides just what we need. I had a great big grin on my face in April when I saw three of our best edible wild greens poke their heads out of my desert soil. By the end of May, I’ll be preparing some of my favorite dishes full of vitamins and minerals, and I didn’t have to water a thing. So here is a description of what to look for in your backyard. First up was Common Mallow or Malvas in Spanish. This is a super-abundant plant in our area and even grows in disturbed soil. Mallow is high in calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin A and C. What’s more, it tastes good! Mallow makes a tasty raw salad green and is also excellent cooked in casseroles, with eggs, or marinated in olive oil. Nobody will starve with this beauty around. Second out was Yellow Dock or Native Sorrel (Hierba de Sangre). Yup, this plant is a potent “liver and blood cleanser.” The leaves need to be cooked and are best when young. Look for Yellow Dock in moist areas against your house, along clean ditches, streams, etc. The leaves have a mild sour flavor and are high in caloric value, calcium, potassium, and vitamin A. Third out was Dandelion or Diente de Leon. The leaves make an excellent spring tonic green salad or they can be lightly cooked. And yes, these are the same dandelions that our fellow Americans spend millions of dollars worth of herbicides to kill each year. Dandelions are high in protein, calcium, phosphorus, and extremely high in vitamin A. Allergy sufferers take note: eat dandelion greens regularly. And remember bitter is better! All of the above natives will love you more if you toss a little rainwater on them. They are free, local, drought resistant, nutritious, perennial, and darn good.

Give a little back in the form of prayer, dance, and song. Nettles (also known as Stinging Nettles) is a common edible and medicinal plant that grows worldwide. It is consumed in soups and vegetable dishes for its savory and blood-building qualities. As a tea it assists in relieving inflammations from allergies and skin disorders. It is really one of our “green superfoods” and is quite easy to cultivate in Southwest gardens. Nettles are very high in proteins, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and many trace minerals. Try this favorite of mine as an early spring tonic dish for a delicious wild dinner!

Tomas Enos studied with Michael Moore in 1990 and then created Milagro Herbs. Erin Galiger has worked with herbs for 10 years. Their philosophy of health and healing is holistic and rooted in the ancient tradition of “Solar Living,” synchronizing our bodies according to the biological time clock, circadian rhythms, and seasonal patterns found on Earth. www.milagroherbs.com 505-820-6321 info@milagroherbs.com 419 Orchard Drive (off Paseo de Peralta next to Kakawa Chocolate House)

Spring Nettle Pie Always use fresh Nettle leaves; that means either growing your own or gathering them in the wild from a clean place. Cut off the leaves from the plant where they meet the stem (wearing gloves) and then before cooking, cut off the small leaf stem. The stinging from the plant is formic acid and is nullified by cooking; it is, however, a valuable medicinal component for other ailments (such as allergies and arthritis). Pie Shell ½ cup olive oil 1 cup quinoa flour ½ cup oat flour Pinch of salt 4 Tablespoons cold water Blend the oil into the mixed flours and salt until crumbly; add the cold water a little at a time to blend into a smooth ball. Press the pie dough into an 8-inch pie pan. Pie Greens 4 Tablespoons olive oil 6 cups Nettle leaves, lightly chopped 4 cups red Chard leaves, chopped ¼ teaspoon salt 3 Tablespoons chopped Parsley Saute the chopped onion in olive oil at medium heat for 10 minutes until transparent in color; then add the Nettle leaves and continue cooking until they are completely wilted. Now add the chopped red chard, salt, and fresh parsley; cover and reduce heat until all ingredients are equally cooked (about 10 minutes). Now spread all the vegetables into the pie crust evenly with the rich sauce in the pan and place in the preheated oven at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool 5 minutes before serving.

The Far-Reaching Influence of America’s “Sleeping Prophet” Edgar Cayce

A

ny time we try something new or take our lives in a new direction, our intuition speaks up. From the mundane task of choosing a restaurant in a foreign place, to choosing a fulfilling career, we trust our intuition to identify what will truly be worth the effort and serve our unique life. The person that put intuition on the map in America is the great American psychic Edgar Cayce, 1882-1945. He did this by displaying such phenomenal talent that millions of people paid attention, becoming aware of human potential through the abilities he displayed. Although his “differences” emerged as a pre-teen, a baseball head injury at the age of 15 may have increased his abilities. The mythic story about him I heard as a kid, that “there was a guy who could put his schoolbook underneath his pillow at night and recite the whole book in the morning,” was the unique way young Edgar could learn things before the baseball accident. Also, Edgar’s grandfather had unusual abilities that people talked about in hushed tones; these striking talents were in his family.

EVOLVING…IN SANTA FE

There are debates about whether Cayce was a psychic or a medium. He appeared to be both because he gave most readings in full trance with no memory afterwards, and that phenomenon is considered mediumship. What set Cayce’s source of information apart from other mediums is the amount of detail, range of knowledge, and degree of accurate information he produced. Unlike many spirits that work through mediums and give people guidance, “the Cayce source” never gave a name. Although his insights were on myriad topics, most people asked Edgar Cayce about their pressing health issues. He could diagnose someone’s illness, prescribe original healing methods still in use today, and even tell the client on what shelf and in what store they would find a particular medicine. The range of Edgar Cayce's gifts was astonishing whether awake or asleep. One time, Cayce needed the help of a banker for a pet project. Edgar had a psychic flash and called to a stranger walking by, addressing him by his full name. The banker was so astonished that he took Cayce to lunch. At the restaurant, the banker gave him another test to see if Cayce really had psychic powers: “Write down the combination to my bank’s safety vault on this napkin,” he required. And Edgar Cayce could do that! Convinced, the banker became a supporter and lifelong friend. Growing up to be an extraordinary source of

information for others was a responsibility Cayce took seriously. He was uncommonly committed to his Christian principles and the work ethic of sacrificing for others, and spent hours a day in trance and in prayer. One day, his own wise source of information told him to stop doing so many readings or it would kill him. But Cayce felt the weight of the daily letters for his help that arrived by the truckload, literally. He kept on extending his working hours until they were six times what his own spiritual guides suggested. This soon put him in the ironic position of correctly predicting the date of his own death. An admirable trait of Cayce’s is that even though he could see into the future, and see his own failure up ahead, it didn’t stop him from trying to live his dreams. His big dream was to found and run an alternativehealth hospital based on the health principles revealed to him by his intuition. Early on, Cayce had a complete vision of the beginning, middle, and end of his beloved hospital, and went ahead with the project anyway. He built it and had it for as long as it could last, until its donors were wiped out by the Great Depression. It brought up many unexpected challenges and disappointments, but he understood the greater value in the doing of something and not necessarily succeeding. A legend in his own time, Cayce was always humble and willing to answer questions about whatever people wanted to know about. However, he noticed the correlation between the level of consciousness of his clients, revealed by their questions, and the level of his readings: in the presence of amazing people, he produced amazing and helpful insights

about their health, past lives, career developments, etc. Recently, I came across a very old article from a beauty magazine, featuring beauty tips culled from the many recorded Cayce readings: clients at various times had asked him how to repair their aging faces and sagging skin. The most important aid to maintaining beauty, Cayce proclaimed, was “The Mind!” and having a positive outlook. He also recommended a simple headroll exercise that when performed each day, “… will stimulate the circulation to the entire face, head and neck: keep the throat and jaw line firm; and prevent the formation of double or multiple chins.” (The catalogue of 14,000-plus readings is available at the Association for Research and Enlightenment, www.edgarcayce.org.) I tried this exercise myself and noticed a difference in about a week. Here’s how it goes, and the key is to do it gently. To begin, your eyes are looking straight ahead, your head is level with your mouth closed. You very slowly stretch your neck up with your eyes looking back at the ceiling; then you bring your head level again and look straight, then bend your neck forward so your chin touches your chest, and very slowly, roll the head over to the right shoulder, then roll it slowly to the back; then continue and roll it to the left shoulder, then down to your chest, and slowly bring it up to level. Repeat by stretching your neck again so you’re looking at the ceiling. You do one roll in one direction, and then switch and roll in the other direction. Alternating, you do about ten of them or more. If you smile as you stretch your neck up, it’s good for jowl-tightening. When I do them, I feel their alternating left and right motion also serves to balance my energy. I also imagine that I’m releasing

whatever energy has accumulated from the day’s circumstances, as I let my head gently roll as far as my neck will allow. (This exercise must be done slowly.) I also imagine that this releasing movement makes me receptive to new thoughts and spiritual guidance. Of all the insights about psychic work gained from reading about the life of Edgar Cayce, what impresses me the most was not his talent, but his strength of character. Working in an era when his gifts weren’t accepted, he still followed his own path, made a name for The Sixth Sense, and brought it to the attention of millions of others. Because Edgar Cayce did not limit himself and did his best to fulfill his own creative potential, as a country and beyond, we learned more about intuition and our own greater selves.

Let Passion Be Your Guide “Forget your perfect offering. There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” —Leonard Cohen

F

rom a shamanic perspective, change is seen as a journey through a doorway. To make any changes means that a door must be cracked open, that we dare to look around and peek into what exists beyond the current landscape of our lives. Moving through the opened door, we leave behind what’s familiar and head toward something new. Cracking open the doorway boldly sets things in motion—because the light gets in. We’re able to see what we could not see or perhaps even dream of before. We begin to wonder about possibilities, taste the potentials, sense the adventure, get curious and hungry for more. Change is ever present in the natural flow of life, yet we often fear and fight against the cycles of endings and beginnings. We struggle to hold onto what’s known and familiar while longing for something fresh, exciting, and new.

Endings often get fueled by anger, regrets, and disappointment. Beginnings often evoke selfdoubts, fears of unknowns, and confusion about which direction to go. So how do we find our way?

Lean Into the Ending Every step through the doorway of change is a death of sorts. So it’s essential we befriend death, learn to recognize and honor the gifts that come with completions and endings. My dad, in his dying, was a great teacher about accepting death and courageously going with the momentum of transformation and change. So was Jasmine, my beloved canine friend. With both of these loved ones, I didn’t want to miss a moment as they made the passage from this world to the realm of spirit. Instinctively, I dove deep into the sharing of their journeys, offering care and companionship, even though this was new territory for me filled with notlived-before experiences. The gifts of the learning and the love that was shared, even with significant losses, will forever be cherished. When we lean into the ending, we stay connected and engaged. This may be an ending of a health challenge, our job, a relationship, familiar daily schedule, or old ideas and beliefs. Staying present with the process of the ending, the dying-away, opens space for learning and enrichment, for exploring the mysteries, and allowing genuine feelings to be felt. Endings and completions are filled with gifts we can search for and find.

internal change which allows the leaves to naturally fall away. Without the letting go, the well-being of the tree is compromised. Letting go nourishes health, balance, and well-being for the trees and others in the web of life. We too can be intentional with our process of letting go. There will be more effectiveness and ease when we feel respect and appreciation, even gratitude and love, for whatever is being let go of—clutter in the closet, addictive patterns, completed projects, an illness, old ways of relating, judgmental thoughts. We can honor the purpose that has been served and which now is complete. Letting go opens space for the new.

“Change is a passage, a journey through the doorway leading from what has been into something not yet known.”

Let Passion Be Your Guide Change is a passage, a journey through the doorway leading from what has been into something not yet known. Heading right into the mystery can be rather daunting and fearfilled. So what carries us through? What compels us to open doorway after doorway of change? If we reach beyond the fears, we’ll find the passion of our hearts calling us, guiding the way. Like a butterfly coming out of the chrysalis, readying to fly into an entirely new existence. Like snakes shedding skins, creating space for expansion and full self-expression, not staying small and confined. Like little birds tapping open eggshells from the inside and moving out, boldly leaving behind the only world they have known. Unstoppable uninhibited passion—let this be your guide.

Love What You’re Letting Go Of Moving through the doorway of change involves letting go of something familiar and known. Letting go is a natural part of growth, healing, and transformation. With the letting go, essential energy is freed up to move into the next cycle, to pursue and manifest what now fully supports the flourishing of life. Nothing is stuck or blocking the way. Remnants from the past aren’t weighing things down. There’s much we can learn from the natural world about letting go. Take a look at the ways the trees drop their leaves in the fall. Leaves serve a vital purpose for the life of the trees. Once that purpose has been served and the cycle is complete, the trees make an intentional EVOLVING…IN SANTA FE

Astarte & Eriene

T

he following is a channeled piece from Astarte and Eriene on the topic of New Directions.

Q: How do we stay on our soul’s path? A: Your soul makes decisions on what you will experience in your present lifetime before you incarnate. Throughout your life, you work with the energies of these decisions. These decisions are not something that can be directed with the intellectual/mental body. Soul path guidance comes from the heart center. This is a big lesson that everyone who comes into this planet at this time is learning. It is beneficial to discern what your mind is directing in your life and what your heart is steering in your life, and to know the difference. They are both useful, but when you focus on your soul path in life, it is your heart connection that you need to follow to be able to fulfill your soul path.

Q: Any tips to help people with this? A: The mind often calculates what move to make by your memory of a past experience. The mind has the most baggage of all because you are not making decisions based on what you’re seeing in the present moment. Instead, you’re making decisions based on what you are seeing all the way into your past. For instance, if you recognize a situation coming up in your life that triggers a memory of a very similar situation where you got burned, your mind will calculate that past experience with what is happening in the present and it will merge these two experiences together and make decisions based on that comparison. When you contemplate a decision, your past memories can create heavy thought-form energy within the body. You balance this heaviness in your emotional body during the decision-making process. The goal is to make decisions based on the intelligence in your heart. Staying in the present moment and using the emotional energy created in the heart will direct you to make the most beneficial decisions for your soul’s path. By doing this, the heavy energy will be released and you will

have a feeling of relief/lightness come over you. The key is to discern which choices feel heavier or lighter within you. Q: Do you have any offerings around the themes of “New Directions”? A: Downsizing relates to religion in that when you desire to be closer to Spirit/God, there is a very strong belief system that you need to release physical belongings and the drive to obtain things. There is a belief that this is very much connected with ego and that being connected to Spirit/God is the opposite of being connected to ego. Therefore, by releasing some of your physical belongings, you attain a stronger connection to the spiritual aspect of your human experience. It is like when you switch your focus—or change the channel on your radio or TV—from that of focusing on bringing material possessions in and making money to buy things to that of focusing more on connecting to Spirit/ God, that you find it helpful and desirable to not focus as much on obtaining material things.

“It is beneficial to discern what your mind is directing in your life and what your heart is steering in your life, and to know the difference. ”

Q: Any advice on how to move through life transitions? A: Often when an individual is faced with a transition in their life, they know the transition is happening by the feelings they are experiencing, and often it is a time of unsettledness. It is a practice of letting go what you already know and are familiar with, and creating a space for a new life adventure to come in, be it a new career, a geographical move, a decision to have a child, adopt, etc. All these life decisions bring up a good deal of fear in the personality. What we would recommend during these times of transition is to recognize the fear when it comes up, acknowledge it, love it, and decide if it is triggering you to stay on your right path, or if the fear is being facilitated from mental/intellectual analysis of the present situation and what you have experienced in the past. Filter the fear that is coming up through your mind filter and then through your heart filter. Discover where the fear is coming from and ask yourself why this fear is being presented to you at this present time. EVOLVING…IN SANTA FE

Labyrinths: History and Healing

hat do medieval Christian pilgrims, Greek myths of the Minotaur, modern brain research, Southwest Native American basketry, ancient fertility rites, and modern energy healing share? All are connected in some way to labyrinths, curvilinear patterns traced on caves’ walls or embedded in cathedral floors. Labyrinths have been used for communal and personal healing, decision making, storytelling, and spiritual transformation across cultures for tens of thousands of years. Labyrinths can be constructed in complex or simple patterns, in circular or rectangular shape, from whatever materials are available—stone, sand, pieces of tree, tall grass, fabric, tracings in dirt. Neolithic peoples used labyrinths in fertility rites. The labyrinth symbolized the womb, the Sacred Feminine. Entering the labyrinth symbolized the act of creation of a new human being. Winding one’s way out of the labyrinth symbolized

birth or emergence, a concept still embedded in “man in the maze” basketry woven by present-day Southwest Native Americans, especially Hopi.

Labyrinth History Ancient Greeks used labyrinths in their mythological tales. King Minos of Crete had his architect Daedalus construct a labyrinth to imprison the dreaded Minotaur, a half-bull, half-human creature. Daedalus and his son Icarus could only escape by building wings to fly over the labyrinth walls. Elated at his escape, Icarus flew too close to the sun, melted the wax holding his wings together, and plummeted to his death in the Icarian Sea off the coast of Greece. The Romans used labyrinths constructed of stone and lumber for very nonmythological purposes. Roman cavalry horses were trained in labyrinths to make them more sure-footed in open country and to learn to execute complicated maneuvers with other horses in very tight spaces, both necessary skills on the battlefield. Labyrinths were very popular in medieval Christianity, as evidenced by ornate carved stone labyrinths built into cathedral floors, most notably the elevenring labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral near Paris. The Middle Ages were known for both crusades and pilgrimages. Many

people could not participate in either venture, yet wanted the blessings associated with each activity. If a wouldbe pilgrim walked a labyrinth with the full intention of making a pilgrimage, performed charity and meditated on the events that occurred in the holy places such as Jerusalem, then a labyrinth pilgrim was considered to be united in spirit with those making the physical pilgrimage, and emerged from the labyrinth a person transformed in mind, body and spirit. Readers of Dante’s Divine Comedy will recognize labyrinth imagery and metaphors as Dante spirals his way down through Hell filled with darkness and suffering, only to emerge moving in the opposite direction as he ascends the Mountain of Purgatory finally to emerge into the light of the Beatific Vision.

All of these historical labyrinth associations are present in modern labyrinth design, construction, and usage, in which the labyrinth is viewed as an archetype of consciousness itself. idea that labyrinths hold energy connects them with healing. Many people connect the seven circuit labyrinth found on Crete with the seven primary chakras or energy points of the human body. As a locus for walking meditation, labyrinths hold the energy of individual travelers, each of whom walks a unique journey of intentional consciousness that is at the same time a communal path. Walking the labyrinth allows the student to experience calmness, to know what that feeling is, and to access it the next time it is necessary.” Children find the labyrinth experience very helpful, as is clear from their own comments. “My dog died two weeks ago and I have been very upset. After I walked the labyrinth, I realized my dog would live in my heart forever.” “I figured out a way to talk to people to get their attention. It is better to talk than to grab someone’s neck when they are bugging you.”

Labyrinth pathways become sacred geography, carrying a type of knowledge not accessible in our everyday reality. Feel the energy of perhaps centuries of uttered prayers. Upon reaching the labyrinth’s center, pause for several deep breaths. Note how the body and mind feel— quieter, more in sync. Be open to whatever spirit guide may be present in the labyrinth. Amma: The Mother of All Gurus

O

f all the people who’ve written about Amma, Ammachi, Mother, Mata Amritanandamayi, perhaps the most evenhanded and honest and open account has been the one given by the ex-Mr. Katy Perry. AKA Russell Brand. Brand, the recovering sex addict, occasional film star, stand-up comic, selfdescribed “ex-junkie twerp,” and now an informed and informative (if quasilibertarian autodidact) and selfproclaimed mouthpiece for revolutionary change. Odd, that. Odder still, if you can look past most everything Brand has been and been through, and actually listen to what he’s proselytizing, he’s really after many of the very same things as Amma. Chief among them: love. As Brand observed just this past January (on his own blog) after visiting Amma at her ashram in her home state of Kerala, India: “What Amma has intuited, or was born knowing, is that everyone wants to be loved and that everyone is worthy of love. Like a Mother she loves unconditionally and serves expediently. . . . What she demonstrates, we in our loveless social structures are scrabbling to discard. In Amma we have an example of what can be achieved if we build upon the principle of love.”

managed to do is nothing short of, well, nothing short of miraculous. From her humble status and beginnings, Amma has brought into being an ashram (Amritapuri, also known as the Mata Amritanandamayi Math), a university (Amrita University, which has 17,000 students), a hospital and scientific research facility, a business school, and a largely all-volunteer charity network, Embracing the World, that has raised over $70 million for disaster relief (since 2004), handed out nearly 50,000 scholarships for children in poverty, helped over 100,000 women start their own business, built over 45,000 homes in India, planted 1 million trees worldwide since 2001, and treated over 3 million patients free of charge since 1998. And much more so than when E.F. Hutton supposedly spoke, when Amma says mobilize, her people move—fast. And they not only respond more swiftly than most governments,

they maintain a presence long after most everyone else has moved on. For instance, when a tsunami nearly wiped out part of southern India in 2004, Amma and her people responded in a matter of hours, providing food and shelter to thousands, and over the next several years, built or rebuilt more than 6,000 houses. When an earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, Amma and her people were among the first on the scene there as well. And just last month, she and Embracing the World were among the first responders to the Nepal earthquake. “My duty,” Amma has said, “is to console those who are suffering.”

“Amma describes herself as coming to the spiritual path through meditation, hearing and composing sacred texts, and her experience of poverty.”

Not just her duty but everyone’s. According to Hinduism, the suffering of the individual is due to his or her own karma (the results of actions performed in one’s past or past

lives). Amma may have accepted this concept but she’s also turned it on its head, asking, “If it is one’s karma to suffer, isn’t it our dharma [duty] to help ease his suffering and pain?” But this is all in the realm of the material. For most who’ll be showing up at Buffalo Thunder later this month to get a hug (or two or more) from her, to listen to her talks (where she offers up her take on everything from personal fulfillment to climate change), to sing with her, or merely to be in her presence, Amma’s true gift, her real power, is spiritual. Her connection to the divine. If you are able to align in her divinity, you feel the divine that’s inside you— that’s inside all of us. You can touch your divinity and tap into it, through her. JUNE 2015

Spiritual Horoscope

June 2015 Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Happy birthday Gemini! Gain control of your thoughts and make them work for you! Meditate and visualize what you’d like in life, whether job, relationship, self-esteem, finances— whatever! Project thoughts in a specific direction rather than allowing them to be random. Fulfillment comes fast! Also be gentle with your body. Get a massage, take Epsom salt baths, and use healthy affirmations. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Like your Gemini friends, this is an extra powerful affirmation time! Prosperity is waiting to fall into your lap if you open your mind to receive. You can have an exciting job offer. You can also heal roots of negative relationship patterns to improve love and kid connections. Meditations are especially deep so dive in and enjoy the bliss!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Venus enters Leo, making you feel extra beautiful and awesome! New relationships start, or current ones get better. You can also magnetize money! Make room for more joy by meditating on family wounds or heartbreaks that create walls. Delve into forgotten areas of your soul, write about them, forgive them, and let them go. You’ll be trusting, serene, and happy!

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Challenge negative thinking! Why give it more attention and time than affirmations? You’re creating your own reality anyway, so take charge of internal world and make it better! Relationships can bring worry right now, so meditate on what positive shifts you’d like. Release past patterns (they aren’t blueprints for the future!) and write a new soul plan for love and joy!

loud with strength! Then create positive solutions in your mind and dwell there. Even if on a budget, spend fun time with friends and enjoy their love. Seek out new forms of soul connection to tap into the riches within.

abundance as well as love and trust. You can receive gifts of money! Honor your body as your temple and treat it well with good food and enough rest, so you’ll have energy for work and play!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You’re suspicious when things come too easily, but expect extra success at work. You deserve it, and have struggled spiritually these past two years—open up to your rewards! Relationships heal in terms of trust, money, intimacy, and sexuality. Again—let it all in! It’s also a good time to discipline yourself for better health. You’ll be able to stick with the release of bad habits in terms of food, fitness, relationships, or self-esteem.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Make this a great relationship month by releasing resentments caused by unfulfilled expectations. Meditate and write about deep soul needs, so you can discern from shallow desires (or even inherited family issues which keep you attracting trouble!). You’ll know if you need to move on or just reframe your mind and heart. Also, new forms of spirituality re-invigorate your growth. Travel if possible, even if a day trip.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)

If feeling money, health, or work stress, meditate on the spiritual principle of abundance! Your fears or doubts are not the truth — they just slow the flow. Say “NO!” to limiting thoughts — say it out

Venus and Jupiter combine for a sensuous month! Explore spiritual sexuality, like Tantra or Chinese Taoist practices. Visualization can also bring financial

EVOLVING…IN SANTA FE

Like Capricorn friends, you’ll have a sexy month! Relationships are loving and easy. Someone new feels like from a past life. Current partnerships have joyous renewal. Meditate on finances and career. Visualize changes, listen for guidance, and take action steps. Go over your budget and see what expenses are unnecessary. You’ll feel wealthier from saving!

from your heart’s cravings. Be open to unexpected surprises that bring joy you long for!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) This is a prosperous and happy time! Have a party or gathering so loved ones can enjoy the serene energy in your home, and you can soak in the vibes of your “spiritual tribe.” Meditate each day to keep soulful feelings flowing in your house, and also at work. You’ll have a calm aura that blesses whichever environment you’re in. If relationships seem tense, ponder being more flexible. Break old patterns that no longer serve both of you.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Work on healthy boundaries. You can still be loving while setting limits. It could bring up old fears from childhood, but as you do it anyway, you’ll become empowered! Be aware of channeling nervousness into overeating. Devote time each day to your spiritual practice for added soul strength. Workwise, you can get a raise, a new job, or meet a kindred spirit who inspires you.

Aries (March 21 – April 19) Affirmations are a powerful way to cleanse your subconscious and heal old wounds. But beforehand, meditate on unfulfilled desires that swirl in your head causing obsession and resentment. Release them, knowing the Universe will fulfill them in the future as you forgive. Now affirmations can create a new Life Plan
