Invited Speakers DOROTHY M. AINSWORTH DVM, Phd Diplomate American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Dorothy M. Ainsworth is a Board-Certified Large Animal Internist who has worked at the Cornell University Hospital of Animals, Ithaca, NY since 1991. After having completed her residency training in Equine Medicine (Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI), she undertook PhD studies in pulmonary and exercise physiology at the University of Wisconsin (Madison, WI). Her research interests include neonatal infectious disorders and equine pulmonary inflammatory conditions.

TIM BRAZIL BVSc, PhD, Cert EM (Internal Medicine), DECEIM, MRCVS Tim Brazil qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon from Liverpool University in 1988 and has spent most of his career working with equids of different shapes and sizes. That time has been divided between University posts in equine medicine/respiratory medicine research and private equine practice. He holds a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Equine Internal Medicine and is a recognised European specialist in Equine Internal Medicine. He was awarded a PhD from Edinburgh University in 1999 for studies on lung inflammation in the horse. In 2005 he established an ambulatory equine internal medicine consultancy service (Equine Medicine on the Move) based in the Cotswolds providing diagnostic and second opinion services to equine practices throughout the UK. Despite having spent the last 12 years in private practice he continues to teach Veterinary students and regularly contributes to continuing education meetings and conferences for practicing equine vets. He is a consultant to The Brooke, a charity that provides free health care to working equids in some of the world’s poorest communities for whom he runs a clinical audit programme worldwide.

GUIDO CASTELLANO DVM, Roma Dr. Guido Castellano graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Perugia in 1984 follows a specialization in Medicine and Surgery of the Horse at the University of Teramo in 2003. Currently is the Veterinary Director of the General Command of Carabinieri. Professor at the University of Camerino from 2000 to 2010. President of the Central Veterinary FISE committee and President of the Anti-Doping FISE Scientific Committee.

MICHELLE M. LEBLANC DVM, DACT Michelle LeBlanc received her DVM degree from Michigan State University in 1977. After graduation she was in a mixed animal practice in Elkton, MD

until 1980 when she joined the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida. She held the positions of Professor and Director of the Equine Research program for the College. In January 2002 she joined Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. While at the U of Florida she received numerous awards including the Carl J Nordon Distinguished Teacher and the McDaniels Clinical Research Award for her work with oxytocin in infertile mares. Michelle is a 1982 Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and is a past president of the College. She received the Theriogenologist of the Year Award from the ACT in 2000 for her research, teaching and service efforts. She has published on the areas of mare infertility and perinatology and holds the patent on the equine colostrometer. She is a member of the Committee for International Symposium on Equine Reproduction and is a past board member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. She is presently one of two Theriogenologists on staff at RREH in central Kentucky. She divides her professional time between Lexington KY and consulting in Ocala, FL.

MARCO LIVINI DVM, Milano Dr. Marco Livini was born in Milan in august 24th 1962, graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1988 The first experience in equine medicine are conducted abroad in Sweden for 3 months at the clinic of Dr. Peterson. In 1990 he began working in the gynecology field in Scone in Australia and then for other 6 months in Ireland with Dr. Stefania Bucca. In Ireland at Rathbarry Stud he works as head of the stud farm for the stallions of the National Hunt He returned to Italy in 1991 and began working with Dr. Cesare Rognoni with whom he works for a breeding season at “Allevamenti Toniatti”. After the breeding season continues the collaboration with the veterinary Luxardo and Rognoni, of which he became a partner in 1994. Currently he is still part of the “Ippovet Veterinary Associates” based in Carpiano (Milan). In 2001 he became the SIVE regional referee in 2005 he is one of SIRE coordinator. Joined the SIVE Board he became president from 2009 to 2011. Currently covering the position of past-president. Its activities are concentrated in gynecology and management of stallions.

DALE L. PACCAMONTI DVM, MS Dr. Paccamonti completed his undergraduate and veterinary education at Michigan State University, receiving his D.V.M. in 1981. After four years in a mixed practice in Chestertown, Maryland, he pursued advanced training at the University of Florida where he completed a residency in Theriogenology and received his M.S. degree. Dr. Paccamonti joined the faculty at Louisiana State University in 1988 where he is currently a Professor of Theriogenology and Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Dr. Pacca-

XVIII SIVE International Congress Bologna, February 3 rd - 5 th, 2012 monti is a Diplomate and former President of the American College of Theriogenologists and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the Society for Theriogenology, and currently serves on the International Equine Reproduction Symposium Committee.

RICHARD J. PIERCY MA, VetMB, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, MRCVS Reader in Comparative Neuromuscular Disease, Royal Veterinary College, London, UK Richard qualified from Cambridge University in 1994. After two years in private equine practice he moved to the USA and completed a residency in equine internal medicine at The Ohio State University and a Master of Science degree in muscle physiology and disease. He returned to the UK to complete doctoral training in molecular and cellular biology of neuromuscular diseases as a Wellcome Fellow at the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre, Imperial College from where he attained his PhD. Richard is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College and University College London. In 2010 he was appointed to the position of Reader in Comparative Neuromuscular Disease at the Royal Veterinary College. Richard’s research interests include comparative aspects of primary muscle disorders, including exertional rhabdomyolysis, polysaccharide storage myopathy and atypical myopathy in horses, centronuclear myopathy and dystrophin-deficient muscular dystrophy in dogs and Emery Dreifuss muscular dystrophy in humans. His laboratory also has a growing international programme of research into recurrent laryngeal neuropathy in horses. In addition, with collaborators at the RVC’s Structure and Motion laboratory, he has an active research interest in the use of gait analysis for objective assessment of equine ataxia, particularly in cervical vertebral stenosis (Wobbler syndrome) in horses. Richard directs the Comparative Neuromuscular Diseases Laboratory, which provides a service for the histopathological assessment of muscle biopsy samples from veterinary clinical cases across Europe.

SARAH E. POWELL MA, VetMB, MRCVS Sarah graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2002 and went on to complete an equine internship in Canada before returning to the UK to first opinion equine practice in the South of England. Sarah joined Rossdale & Partners, Newmarket in 2005 as an assistant and is now one of four senior orthopaedic clinicians at Rossdales Equine Diagnostic Centre. For the last 5 years she has been responsible for the development and running of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging department, and, in 2008 oversaw the installation of the Computed Tomography suite. Her day-to-day caseload concentrates on external orthopaedic referral cases and internal Thoroughbred referrals, with an emphasis on diagnostic imaging and she heads the three-dimensional imaging

and scintigraphy departments. Sarah speaks widely at international meetings and has authored book chapters and scientific papers on a variety of subjects.

MICHAEL W. ROSS DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons Dr. Ross is a Professor of Surgery at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation from Cornell University’s New York State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1981, he completed a large animal internship program there. Dr. Ross then completed a 3-year large animal surgical residency program at New Bolton Center where he was appointed Lecturer in Surgery from 1985-1988, Assistant Professor of Surgery from 1988-1993, and Associate Professor of Surgery from 19931999. Dr. Ross became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1986 and is an active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Dr. Ross has broad clinical interests including equine gastrointestinal, respiratory, and musculoskeletal surgery, but in recent years has concentrated efforts in the area of orthopedic surgery with a particular interest in arthroscopic surgical techniques. Equine lameness diagnosis and management has always been a clinical focus, with a special emphasis in the Standardbred and Thoroughbred racehorse. Dr. Ross developed and is Director of the Nuclear Medicine Program at New Bolton Center and is the author of over 295 scientific papers, proceedings, abstracts and book chapters. Ross and Dyson’s new lameness textbook and companion CD, Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse, published December 2002 by WB Saunders (Elsevier Science), is the culmination of over 30 years of study and interest in clinical examination and management of the lame horse. Ross and Dyson were recognized by the Association of American Publishers for outstanding achievement in Professional and Scholarly Publishing (2003 award in the field of nursing and allied health). The second edition, with a companion website, www.rossanddyson.com was published November 2010.
