SCIENTIFIC COMMEETTEE Dear colleagues, I am really pleased to introduce next international meeting SCIVAC 2012. This year, the congress will be hosted in the wonderful new Congress Hall, an ideal place where any veterinarian will have the opportunity to spend a full three-day program of great continuing education. So many appointments not to be missed – over fifty worldwide experts will cover all veterinary specialties offering lectures of different level, from general overviews to advanced workshops. Simultaneous translation into English will be provided. Beyond the excellent scientific program, SCIVAC and Rimini offer an unique social program, combining the evening atmosphere on the beach with the best Italian flavours. Don’t forget the deadline for the early subscription… 30th April 2012.

RIMINI June 8th-10th 2012
ADVACED SESSION CARDIOLOGY FRIDAY, JUNE 8th 2012 Time: 2.20 pm-5.00 pm - Sala Del Parco How should we treat asymptomatic heart disease in cats? Speakers: Virginia Lluis-Fuentes (UK) Chairman: Marco Poggi (I) Language: English - Number of partecipants: 30 Fee: Up to April 30th € 65,00 From May 1st to May 20th € 95,00 Feline cardiomyopathy is very common but very variable in severity, ranging from mild subclinical disease to life-threatening heart failure or thromboembolism. One of the most difficult challenges in managing feline heart disease is the ‘all-or-nothing’ nature of their clinical signs, as it is often too late to achieve a lasting successful outcome once signs are manifested. How can we prevent at-risk cats from cardiac complications? This session will look at how we can identify cats at risk of heart failure and thromboembolism, and will critically evaluate the available options for reducing risk in these cats.
ORTHOPEDICS
FRIDAY, JUNE 8th 2012 Time: 2.20 pm-5.00 pm - Sala del Ponte
The Complete Management of both dogs and cats with chronic pain and dysfunction with osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal problems? Facts, Frustrations and Follies! Speaker: Steve Budsberg (USA) Chairman: Filippo Martini (I) Language: English - Number of partecipants: 30 Fee: Up to April 30th € 65,00 From May 1st to May 20th € 95,00 The Complete Management of both dogs and cats with chronic pain and dysfunction with osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal problems? Facts, Frustrations and Follies! This presentation will include information on all aspects of how we treat patients with chronic pain and dysfunction with osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal problems. Specifically, it will include thoughts and data on diagnosis (such as differences between dogs and cats, or differences between an acute painful flare vs a continued chronic situation); How we address the expectations of therapies with the owners; What owners can expect from the treatment methods and what we actually know (have clinical data) about some of the myriad of treatments we recommend. The presentation will also discuss those cases that are non-responders and how we approach these most difficult cases.
BEHAVIOUR
FRIDAY, JUNE 8th 2012 Time: 2.20 pm-5.00 pm - Sala del Lavatoio
CANINA-MENTE: cane/uomo, emozioni a confronto Speakers: Maurizio Martucci, Psicologo-Psicoterapeuta e Attilio Miconi, Istruttore Cinofilo Chairman: Franco Fassola (I) Langauge: Italian without translation Number of partucipants: 30 Fee: Up to April 30th € 65,00 From May 1st to May 20th € 95,00 Un’esperienza tra le emozioni del cane e dell’essere umano.

SATURDAY JUNE 9th 2012 Time: 9.20 am -12.00 am - Sala del Parco
Diseases of the pleural space Speakers: Lynelle Johnson (USA), Davide De Lorenzi (I) Chairman: Federico Fracassi Language: English - Numero partecipanti: 30 Fee: Up to April 30th € 65,00 From May 1st to May 20th € 95,00 Normally, the pleural space contains no air and only a few milliliters of pleural fluid. Pleural effusion and pneumothorax are typically a secondary phenomenon; therefore recognition of these conditions is not analogous to diagnosis of a dog or cat’s underlying condition and determining the underlying etiology is key to appropriate managing. Observation and auscultation of the dyspnoeic patient with pleural space diseases is usually sufficient to localize the problem and imaging confirms both pleural effusion and pneumothorax; in case of pleural effusion, properties of the fluid may be diagnostic in some cases but often enough the relationship between fluid characteristics and the underlying pathophysiological process is less well defined and there is often overlap between fluid type and etiology. This workshop outlines the practical approach to pleural space diseases focusing on early recognition, imaging confirmation, stabilization of the patient and logical diagnostic investigation to determine the underlying etiology.

The author will discuss the parameter used to choose witch modalities will be more costeffective to arrive at the right diagnosis.
