Welcome

I Dear Reader,

t is not really surprising that in times of uncertainty, the art world is experiencing an increasing interest. There is much talk about exploding prices, higher values at recordbreaking auctions, quite similar to what we see happening in commodities like gold and silver – and also in real estate. While government bonds, securities, endowment funds and other financial investments are increasingly met with larger degrees of doubts, many investors consider blue chip art to be one of the few safe havens. Then of course there’s the

passionate part of buying art: spending money in a worthwhile way, and to do so with pleasure. The fact that one componant of art has to be a certain degree of passion is demonstrated by the content of our latest issue, which is primarily dedicated to the topic of art and architecture. While many of the art fairs which we recommend are evidence of the growth of the market in monetary terms, they also showcase the true nature of art: the ability of human beings to use their imagination, envision utopias, to innovate, but also to conserve – as August Everding, former state musical director in Munich, once said. He added that art was exciting, inspiring and thought-provoking. Apart from painting, sculpture, music and literature, art also finds its expression in architecture, which embodies the visible aspects of our dwellings. It reveals, and offers ways of interpreting, the way we live our lives. It can therefore be inspiring, thought-provoking and exciting in every way. According to expressionist painter Franz W. Seiwert, art is the expression of a culture, and of an enriched approach to life made visible. As always we offer you the most beautiful pieces of real estate from around the world which all make wonderful homes to your collection of art. Sincerely

pHoTo: CHRISTIAn SCHoppE

THANK YOU CONTRIBUTORS

The Eye Paris, mon amour

BARBARA MARKERT Barbara Markert has been living in the French capital and reporting from there on fashion, beauty and lifestyle trends since 2003. The Tegernsee native loves looking behind the scenes, visiting the workshops of companies steeped in tradition, and being able to look over the shoulders of the busy craftsmen – and women – for example at Hermès. Under the leadership of its creative director PierreAlexis Dumas, amazing projects are underway, for example the artistic shop window displays designed by Kiki van Eijk.

On Tour

IWAN BAAN After completing his studies in documentary photography in The Hague, architecture became the focus of Iwan Baan’s work rather by coincidence. He is always on the road and has made a great success of putting buildings by the most renowned architects into the best light. Rem Koolhaas, SANAA, Frank Gehry, and Herzog & de Meuron trust his keen eye for the right angle and the best lighting. In London, he captured the pavilion of the Serpentine Gallery on fi lm (page 52).

The Linguist

KATJA ISELER Katja Iseler’s office is far away from the GG editorial headquarters in Hamburg – in Palermo to be precise. The Hamburg native has been living in Sicily, where she also studied art, for the last 26 years. She has worked as a translator for European theater projects and co-founded a production company for documentary fi lms. For GG, she translates articles into Italian – at times under aggravated conditions: while she worked on items for the last edition, an earthquake hit.

MARC HELDENS “My 20 years of experience have given me an eye for the ‘certain something’. It is not about me as a person, but more about my eye, which captures the moment,” said Marc Heldens, and sent us this picture. The producer and stylist simply has an unerring sense for great stories, as well as a great eye for documenting them visually. For this edition of GG, the widely traveled Dutchman photographed the Australian artist David Bromley in the latter’s studio (page 58).

The Aesthetics Expert

FLORIANNE WOHLFAHRT Florianne Wohlfahrt recently joined us and has been supporting the GG team in terms of editorial design. The graphic artist, who was born in the South of France and grew up in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, lays out the pages both cleverly and in a visually pleasing way. But there’s more to it than that: because she has complemented her passion for visual aesthetics with a degree in psychology (her favorite subject at university was “experimental aesthetics,” her main field of research: “visual perception”), she does quite a bit more than just move photos around on the page.

Outback Fan

JULICA JUNGEHÜLSING Australia has become her home: Julica Jungehülsing has always had a penchant for the land down under, and has been living in Sydney since 2001. The journalist likes surfing, swimming in the Pacific, and delicate sea urchins. On her many trips, she has also developed a passion for the deserted lands and nature of the outback. For GG, she penned a portrait of David Bromley, who has long been an acquaintance of hers. Having first come across his pictures by chance on a foray through Sydney’s art galleries, she has been envious of his floors full of curiosities and artifacts since they first met.

Welcome

This crazy thing called ART A dear friend took me along to the spring auctions at Sotheby’s in New York. A few weeks earlier the famous auction house had sold The Scream by Munch for a record breaking 120 million dollars, the highest price for an art piece sold at auction. We dashed across the red carpet and into the venue, where the Niarchos, Gagosians, Shafrazis and Mugrabis were sitting in high anticipation. A glimpse into the art universe, its most important events and personalities was the idea for this issue – and the fact that where art is collected, cutting-edge architecture is highly likely to follow suit. As our protagonist we chose Adam Lindemann, a mega collector and highly interesting man, who has built many houses for his spectacular art collection. His most talked about is the one in Manhatten PHOTO: CHRISTIAN SCHOPPE, ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT, FAMILY LAMP, 2009, PHOTO & COPYRIGHT: ATELIER VAN LIESHOUT

that he created with the help of architect David Adjaye. But Lindemann has another huge passion: his columns for the NY Observer, which are regularly devoured by all participants of the art world. Unforgotten remains Lindemann’s call to “Occupy Art Basel Miami Beach, Now!“ Simon de Pury, one of his admirers: “Adam is a true connoisseur, incredibly courageous and a collector of substance. An important player in today’s art world!”

We hope this issue will get you inspired,

Michaela Cordes

Love at first sight! Three years ago at the DesignMiami/Basel I discovered the bronze “Family Lamp” by Studio Van Lieshout at the booth of Carpenters Workshop Gallery. My favourite piece until today. I later learned that Brad Pitt is also a fan of the artist and owns two lamps as part of his own collection.

Masterpieces!

Rembrandt (center), Frans Hals (left) and Georg Pencz (right) grace the walls at Tefaf Maastricht – the major art and antiques fair that has taken place in Holland every year for 25 years. Some regard Tefaf as the leading art fair worldwide. 260 dealers from 16 countries, among them the Otto Naumann gallery for Old Masters in New York, like to save their best pieces for the big event in March: ďŹ ne art, jewelry, silver, furniture and antiques. Connoisseurs and collectors are never disappointed. Turn the page for more art-related events around the globe to note in your calendars!

PLAYGROUND TRAVEL

Follow the (he)art... Why not take a trip to Paris this fall to see some high-end interior design at the Grand Palais? Or fly to Miami this winter and combine scouting for contemporary art with some fun at the beach? Or perhaps go admire the Old Masters in Maastricht in spring and then, while you’re at it, head down to Art Basel – the mother of all art fairs. Check out the spring and fall auctions or seek inspiration at one of the many satellite fairs revolving around the big events. The respected journalist and art market observer Martin Tschechne reveals what’s worth seeing, buying and collecting when, where, and why – right through next summer.

1

SEPT 7–9, 2012, SH CONTEMPORARY, SHANGHAI. This is the sixth edition of the fair but it’s still making the air in Shanghai buzz. The Chinese art market is hot and the country’s young artists are, too. Don’t be fooled by the quaint gingerbread-house style exhibition halls.

2

SEPT 7–DEC 9, 2012, BIENAL SÃO PAULO. Spectacular architecture by Oscar Niemeyer and an art scene and art market that are making straight for the top. This year’s curatorial team is harnessing the power of poetics to the cause of global survival. São Paulo is in fast forward mode!

3

FALL

SEPT 14–23, 2012, BIENNALE DES ANTIQUAIRES, PARIS. Karl Lagerfeld is designing the backdrop for this famous fair. The glass dome of the Grand Palais is sensational. 150 dealers will display everything from high-end interiors to fine art.

4

SEPT 19–23, 2012, ART MOSCOW, MOSCOW. Now taking place in its 16th edition, this fair has become an institution. The 16th Art Moscow will draw gallerists from around the world and transform the city into a center for contemporary art. Last year, 20,000 visitors attended.

5

OCT 19–28, 2012, HIGHLIGHTS, MUNICH. Antique sculptures, Viennese Art Nouveau, furniture, paintings, silver, porcelain: you’ll find nothing but top quality at Haus der Kunst. The international art fair has the same high standards.

6

SEPT 20–23, 2012, VIENNAFAIR/THE NEW CONTEMPORARY. There’s more to the East than Shanghai. And more to the West than New York. Under its new director the Vienna art fair is starting to look over the fence – at the booming art scene in Eastern Europe. Or in Texas and L.A.

7

OCT 11–14, 2012, FRIEZE ART FAIR, LONDON. Young, irreverent and ten years old. This fair likes to run its own show – publishing a magazine, spawning subsidiaries and generally demonstrating to competitors that Regent’s Park is the ultimate venue for the young art scene and the art market. 170 exhibitors from 34 countries create an exciting platform for exchanging fresh, new ideas.

8

OCT 18–21, 2012, FIAC, PARIS. Larry Gagosian, Bärbel Grässlin, Paula Cooper and Contemporary Fine Arts, Michael Werner, David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth – in short: the cream of the international art market meets up at the Grand Palais.

9

CHRISTIE’S. September 13: Chinese art in New York; October 11: modern and contemporary art in London; November 7: Old Masters in Amsterdam. Christie’s has branches and offices in 32 countries around the world. Details of what’s coming onto the market and when are only a click away at www.christies.com.

10

PHILLIPS DE PURY. A Basquiat for 16 million dollars, an Andy Warhol portrait of Mao for ten. Visit www.phillipsdepury.com to find out about upcoming auctions. And which paintings fetched what price.

11

SOTHEBY’S. 250 auctions every year, in Hong Kong, Doha, Toronto and many other places. The established London auction house is proud of its ubiquitous presence in the global art market. Visit www.sothebys. com for a preview – like the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on November 5, 2012 in New York.

WINTER

NOV 15–18, 2012, PARIS PHOTO, PARIS. Professionals, aficionados, experts – Paris is a dream city for the photographers of this world. Under the elegant glass roof of the Grand Palais 135 galleries and publishers present everything captured by the eye of a camera, from daguerrotype to experimental digital photography. Plus the classics of photographic art, of course.

2

NOV 22–25, 2012, CONTEMPORARY ISTANBUL, ISTANBUL. Gallerists from New York meet gallerists from Teheran at this fair in Turkey. Sometimes the New Yorkers will display Iranian art and vice versa. Istanbul has become a forum for encounters and exchange, and the public love it. More than 60,000 visitors attended last year.

3

FEB 1–3, 2013, INDIA ART FAIR, NEW DELHI. Contemporary art from India is one of the blue chips on the international art market. Incredibly successful artists such as Subodh Gupta and Jitish Kallat are the vanguard of an art scene that is just waiting to be discovered – bright, critical young artists are responding to contemporary times with wit, poetry, and some ingenious techniques. And they’ve made their main forum into one of the world’s most important art fairs.

4

DEC 5–9, 2012, ART BASEL/MIAMI, MIAMI BEACH. It was a stroke of genius and it yielded phenomenal results: Let’s do the collectors a favor and take Art Basel somewhere warm and sunny in the winter. After all, art and joie de vivre are related. The organizers of this famous fair can be proud of their bold decision. Ten years later, it’s a fi xture for art lovers from Buenos Aires to Abu Dhabi. They flock to Art Basel/Miami to attend the beach parties, talk about art and seek inspiration. Some of them even find the piece they’ve always dreamed of here.

MAR 7–10, 2013, ARMORY SHOW, NEW YORK, (PLUS ADAA THE ART SHOW, INDEPENDENT, VOLTA NY, SCOPE). Piers 92 and 94 in Manhattan – an address with tradition. New York’s waterfront has been the showcase of modern and contemporary art ever since 1994. Half New York attends the five-day event with 220 exhibitors from 30 countries.

2

MAR 13–19, 2013, BADA ANTIQUES AND FINE ART FAIR, LONDON. When the British Antique Dealers’ Association members get together, they create a kind of museum of Commonwealth history featuring English furniture, exquisite silver, Asian antiques and fine art. It doesn’t get any more British than that.

AI WEIWEI TREE, GALERIE URS MEILE, ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH 2011

3

MAR 15–24, 2013, TEFAF, MAASTRICHT. We are in Holland. Waves of tulips undulate through the aisles. But they don’t distract us from the treasures that 260 art dealers are exhibiting at the world’s most important fair for fine arts and antiques – Old Masters, modern art, furniture that has graced royal courts, finest silver, illuminated manuscripts, antiques and Asian art. A fleet of private jets waits patiently on the tarmac at Maastricht airport.

4

5

FEB 13–17, 2013, ARCO, MADRID. Visitors prefer to leave the economic crisis at the door and just enjoy contemporary art. The fair is traditionally opened by a member of the royal family and is accompanied by a supporting program of parties, special exhibitions and other events throughout the city. This year’s guest country is Turkey. Collectors love the aesthetic variety on display and the art-loving public arrives in droves. Over 250,000 visitors last year.

MAR 28–APR 1, 2013, PARIS ART FAIR, PARIS. Asia, Africa, the Middle East – emerging art ignores frontiers. The same goes for this international fair of contemporary art at the Grand Palais in Paris. The focus in 2013 is on the new Russian avant-garde.

5

APR 17–21, 2013, ART COLOGNE, COLOGNE. For many years, Cologne was Germany’s No. 1 city for young art. But then the Wall came down and Berlin’s art scene caught up. Even so, it pays not to bypass this old-established art fair.

2

MAY 23–26, 2013, HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR, HONG KONG. A Motherwell for a million, a Baselitz for half – that’s no mean start for a fair that will be the Art Basel Hong Kong starting 2013. All the big collectors and galleries are here, the market is humming.

3

JUNE/JULY 2013, MASTERPIECE, LONDON. Summer in the city in a park by the river – the Masterpiece fair is held in the South Grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. It’s a feast of modern art, Old Masters, fine wine, glittering jewelry, French furniture and a bright red 1962 Ferrari. Even the royals are impressed!

4

SUMMER

SPRING

1

JUNE 12–16, 2013, ART BASEL, BASEL. There’s no doubt about it: Art Basel is the mother of all modern and contemporary art fairs. The successful concept has been exported as far as Miami and Hong Kong. The Basel show is surrounded by parallel and subsidiary fairs including Volta, Scope and Liste, plus the wonderful Design Miami/Basel – but if you miss the 44th Art Basel, you’ll miss the year’s most important art event.

MAY 10–13, 2013, FRIEZE, NEW YORK. The recipe is straightforward, the result speaks for itself: this fair is dedicated to nothing but art. There are no pretentious arrangements, no ritzy decorations. What 170 or so of the world’s leading gallerists exhibited in May 2012 on Randall’s Island off Manhattan was the youngest and freshest contemporary art in the world. It goes without saying that Frieze New York is modelled on Frieze London. It was held in a tent and could only be reached by ferry, but the public lapped up the opportunity for no-nonsense encounters with avante-garde art plus a sculpture show, sponsorship booths, sounds projects and Frieze Talks. To be continued in 2013.

Do look now! Two things you can never have enough of: inspiration and food for thought. STÄDEL MUSEUM The legendary Städel museum in Frankfurt has been refurbished and expanded. OSKAR DIAZ ... is a London-based product designer who produces fantastic objects. One of these is a paper calendar, which is able to update itself. The calendar absorbs ink only very slowly, a process which takes right to the end of any given month. HELMUT LANG The designer has long turned his back on fashion and towards art, collaborating with Jenny Holzer und Louise Bourgeois. His latest works are sculptures which are both abstract and concrete, made from rubber, plaster, tar and… sheepskin. On show at the Mark Fletcher gallery. NIEUWE NATUUR Melissa Peen, based in Amsterdam, is fascinated by the patterns in kaleidoscopes and used these to design wallpapers. Cost: approx. € 125 per square meter

BETH KATLEMAN The most precious things in life are often fragile and delicate. The sculptures by New York artist Beth Katleman are made of white porcelain and adorn walls like 18th century wallpaper. They tell ornate stories located somewhere between kitsch and Late Baroque. Worthless little objects – tiny dolls, miniature buildings, bridges and trees, which she finds at rummage sales – are cast in plaster and turned into icing-sugar-like installations, which look idyllic, delightful, romantic, but only at first glance.

PLAYGROUND INTERVIEW

It’s all a matter of taste Patrick Perrin is a veritable connoisseur. His family has been involved in art for four generations: as collectors, art dealers and gallery owners. The Frenchman, founder of the “Pavillion des Arts et du Design” fairs, explains why art is not just about money, and why collectors should go against the trend. 6 5

12 1 PAD has been held in Paris for 17 years, in London for seven and in New York for two. Next year will see its Milan debut. What is so special about

PAD in London (October 10-14, 2012): 1 Klaus Bürgel, brooch (Caroline Van Hoek) 2 Les French Desk (Gallery Fumi) 3 Billy Apple’s „A for Apple“ (The Mayor Gallery) 4 Andy Warhol’s „Mao, FS II, No 90“ (Gana Art) 5 David Bielander’s „Hedgehog“ (Van Hoek) 6 Line Vautrin’s „Ombelle“ (Botella) 7 necklace by Louis Osman (Didier Limited) 8 photo by Peter Beard (Michael Hoppen) 9 Bruno Martinazzi’s „Homo sapiens“ 10 brooch by Hubertus von Skal (both: Didier Limited) 11 Christophe Come’s „Lava Cabinet“ (Cristina Grajales) 12 Tatsuo Miyajima’s „Time Rings“ (Cipriani) 13 Myungsun Kang’s „From the Glitter Cabinet“ (Seomi).

The exhibiting galleries are handpicked and are of the highest international standard. It is all about putting the right dealers in touch with the right buyers, which is something that works really well at the PADs. The atmosphere in the tents is relaxed: visitors are able to have a good look around without feeling under any pressure. Even if they are not looking for anything specific, they let themselves be inspired by the interesting objects on show. So what is on offer? Designs by Jean Prouvé and Charlotte Perriand, as well as Zaha Hadid, Ron Arad, Marc Newson and Nendo; pieces of 20th century decorative art. Our range of paintings stretches from Picasso all the way to Warhol. And there are always a few rarities. Apart from quality, which we can guarantee by our choice of galleries alone, good taste is paramount to me. Our dealers are among the most sophisticated in the world and understand the significance of the works of art which they are offering. Often enough, they also help designers and artists from the middle of the last century, who are often rather unknown these days, find new acclaim. these fairs?

26 PG-Interview.indd 26

13

Are there national differences when it comes to

Yes, there are! In Scandinavia, for instance, people tend not to be collectors, but buy to furnish their homes, while in the US it is all about showing that you can afford these pieces of art. Fifteen years ago, we organized an art fair in Moscow. It was a lot of fun, but a bit premature. Back then, the only thing people there were interested in was jewelry. What advice would you give collectors? Collecting is not a question of money, but of sophistication. That’s why my advice is: only buy for your own enjoyment. The problem is that most people collect the same things. One person starts and everyone copies them, because they do not want to get it wrong. That’s not creative at all! And what do you, personally, collect? I actually buy something everyday.... The era does not really matter. Sometimes they are just small, obscure items. What is important is the quality of the individual object. At times, I don’t know myself where to keep all these things, but when I like something, I just cannot resist buy it. At the moment, I am very taken with contemporary glass art. The material is extremely attractive, and there are some wonderful pieces being produced by workshops in Italy, Germany and Belgium. UA collecting?

Stairway to ART heaven...

Light is mirrored in a pond, the walls are adorned with one of the most exquisite private collections of contemporary art. Guests who visit the art collector, columnist and, as of this spring, gallerist Adam Lindemann, gasp for air when entering his impressive home in Manhattan. Built by the British architect David Adjaye, it shows only one of the many talents its owner combines in one person. GG met with one of today’s most controversial and most interesting personalities in the art world: the talented Mr. Lindemann. Please turn the page!

dam Lindemann seems to have it all. A cultivated upbringing (he speaks French and Spanish fluently), a successful career (he built up and later sold his company Mega Communications, the first big Spanish radio broadcaster for latin music in the U.S.), stunning homes filled with a collection of spectacular art and a beautiful family (three daughters from his first, another two from his current marriage to Amalia Dayan, herself a respected gallery owner). But one of the biggest passions of the talented polo player, sailor, entrepreneur and writer seems to be his ability to question the art world with his regular column for the NY Observer. Last December Lindemann shocked some of the biggest players of the business with his provocative piece “Occupy Art Basel Miami Beach, now!” when he declared that he won’t go himself, because he was “through with it,” because of all the “phonies and scenesters.” The bold move first created a lot of anger but lately even more admiration. One of his biggest fans is the famous auction house founder Simon de Pury: “Adam might be unpredictable and likes to provoke. But he looks at the artworld from all kinds of perspectives, is a true connoisseur and a fantastic guy. An important acteur in the art world!” GG met the multitalent a few days after the opening of his latest venture - a brand new gallery space “Venus Over Manhatten”... Last summer when I turned 50, I had a real crisis! I got very depressed. It’s like the end of youth. I am super active, but I hit a speed bump. I had been so involved with the art world, consistently writing and collecting. I asked myself: Ok, what’s next? How do I continue to engage my mind? Raphael Yablonka – the great German dealer from Cologne – told me Leo Castelli had opened his gallery when he was 50. So I thought that’s it! Even if it fails, I’ll make sure that if it’s going to be a disaster, it’s going to be a really big one (he smiles). your own gallery?

The title of the show might be another hint: why would you name a show after a French word that no one understands. Maybe because you have taken on the role of a snob yourself? You surely have been accused of being one ever since your column “Occupy Art Basel Miami!” last December. Were you hurt by the powerful

Well, my parents are collectors themselves, but when I was younger I was never interested in art. When I was in my early twenties I had a girlfriend who was a dear friend of Andy Warhol’s and so I spent a lot of time with Warhol and some of the cast of characters at that moment in the mid eighties in New York. I was only 21 years old, I did not really understand much of anything. I enjoyed meeting Basquiat several times. I was not so much a gallery-goer, I was more of a partygoer. That was my kind of association. Dinners at Halston’s house with Victor Hugo and Andy and Steve Rubell – all very glamorous. But I was just a kid. Tagging along. Then, later, I met Peter Brant because we competed as polo players. The first work I bought was a Julian Schnabel because Peter introduced me to Julian. Then I called Jane Holzer and went to the Warhol estate. That was the beginning of my collecting. I just got more and more into it after that. it part of your upbringing?

get. When people have an unlimited budget it’s like when you ask: why does someone have a 400-foot yacht? Don’t you have room on a 200-foot yacht? It’s because they simply want a bigger one. Some people like to pay more and sometimes it’s a good strategy to pay more. Like you buy Google for 400 dollars a share and then it goes to 500 but it’s only worth 200. Why? It’s Google, everyone buys Google! Everyone buys Rothko. So it is more about the name and not so much about the craftsmenship… Absolutely not. Two people have a museum and two people want a Rothko, and they believe this is an opportunity to get one. You have written several books (Collecting Contemporary and How to Make it in the Art World). What are your passions besides art and writing? I like furniture. I collect vintage cars, I love them. And I collect art books, and I like music. I have several children. I like to spend time with my children. I really like architecture – it can also be an art – if it stands for itself. Your private home seems to be one amazing example of that. Rizzoli published a whole book on your house in Manhattan. What was

artists who enabled German photographic art to make its leap into the museums and its triumphant march onto the international art markets in the 1990s. As early as ten years ago, Höfer participated in the “Documenta” modern and contemporary art exhibition in Kassel. Together with Martin Kippenberger, she represented Germany at the 50th Biennale in Venice in 2003, and has been world-famous ever since. The works by the renowned photo artist are today exhibited in large, international museums, and are also sought after by collectors at art auctions, for example at Christie’s or Sotheby’s in London and New York. am always under time pressure. Because my photos are, whenever possible, taken without people in them, I have to work in very specific time frames. For example in the early morning when it is already light outside, but before the buildings open; or in the evenings when the buildings are closed, but when there is still daylight. Or simply any time I manage to get permission to work there,” Candida Höfer says, explaining her approach. In terms of choosing a subject, she usually researches in advance with the aid of books, and enlists the support of helpful individuals in the countries in which she is planning to work. Later, when she is on location with her Hasselblad or a digital camera, the photographer will spontaneously decide which perspective and which angle will do justice to her first impression of the space. But Candida Höfer does not always have her camera with her on her travels. In Japan, China and Korea – all countries she has visited in the last few years – it was all about “ just taking a look” for her, says the photographer. Her curiosity-based approach – exploring the world by looking, and by observing it objectively and dispassionately – has made Höfer’s art famous. The photographer herself considers her photographs akin to a school of observation. Through this “school” a kind of archive is growing which collects wonderful images of places near and far, and processes these for our collective memory, as it were. To put it in more bibliophile language, it safeguards the images in a sort of encyclopedia of our civilization. This is a side effect, which cannot be praised enough. Candida Höfer comments on her pictures of libraries: “Only later on did I become conscious of the fact that these are all spaces of a kind which may not exist in their current form ten years from now.” SH

All of them are on the routes of the Way of St. James: the traditional paths for pilgrims, which lead from all directions to their destination, the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. The Way of St. James has been culturally seminal since the Middle Ages, and even today its paths are used by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to get to their destination in Galicia. akumu! A remarkably fitting name. Sighting up to 70 elephants a day is not unusual here. Leopards, rhinos, lions – they all dwell on these hallowed lands; precious creatures that coexist as an innate part of this magical homestead. The luxury lodge, built in 2003 with some ceilings soaring as high as nine metres, is some two hour’s drive from the Kruger Park and only approx. 45 minutes from the nearest airport. At the same time, it is the glorious tranquillity, beautiful light and sheer abundance of wildlife that make this oasis so unforgettable. Whether over lunch drenched in the sunlight or at a romantic dinner by candlelight – the comfortable indoors and great outdoors seem to merge into one glorious whole. H Pristine beaches, crystal-clear bays, unspoilt dunes, beautiful backlands and the azure hues of the Mediterranean – welcome to Sardinia. On the Costa del Sud, near the charming little town of Pula with its winding streets and old patrician buildings, the luxury resort “Is Molas” offers the most exclusive comforts in the midst of this stunning natural paradise.

is designs are objects of desire, his visions are pure marvels of the future, and the models in his office are reminiscent of surreal sculptures – it is perhaps no wonder that the Italian Massimiliano Fuksas is an architect, designer, humanist, poet and painter. The diversity of his artistic output can now be admired on the Costa del Sud in southern Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean: It is here that he has created “Is Molas”, an idyllic and luxury resort with exclusive villas, a 5-star hotel, a spa and private beach club, boutiques, tennis courts and restaurants. The 18-hole golf course set in the heart of breathtaking natural surroundings is being extended to include a Gary Player designed 18-hole course and an additional 9-hole course. “Is Molas is all about exhilaration and clarity, exuding a lightness of living,” says the architect. “There is so much light and the villas form living sculptures that open up towards the land and the water. There is always a view of the green of the land or blue of the sky to cherish.” The detached villas also have a pool, garden and large terrace – guaranteed to ensure an all-round sense of well-being.

The Master of the Hermès Universe

At the center of Paris, near the Place de la Concorde, you’ll find the headquarters of Hermès. Pierre-Alexis Dumas (photo) presides over the French firm as a sixth generation member of the founding family. He is also its creative head, and largely responsible for the development of the distinguished luxury goods brand with the horse-and-carriage logo and the fabulous orange packaging. Hermès started out as a saddler in 1837; today, the company is famous for many beautiful products. Hermès’ secret? A perfectly balanced mix of innovation and tradition.

C’est magnifique! There is a reason that the prestigious house of Hermès continues to be one of the most successful luxury brands in the world. It creates products that are made with such extreme care and craftsmenship that one could easily define them as pieces of art. It is this certain aura which surrounds the famous company based at number 24, in the Rue du Faubourg-Sainte-Honoré in Paris. And a very special company philosophy. TexT: Barbara Markert

ast summer, the Avant/Garde Diaries

Festival celebrated its premiere in Berlin. The festival was curated by Dior fashion designer Raf Simons. This year, Transmission LA: AV CLUB, the second installment of the successful festival series featuring a fusion of creative disciplines, took place in Los Angeles, California. Beastie Boy-cum-curator Mike D was in charge of selecting the 17 international artists and trendsetters who, over the course of 17 days, transformed the Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA, into a music club and exhibited their work in The Geffen Contemporary. A wing of MOCA and a former police car garage, this space hosted a changing program of presentations, concerts, DJ nights, performances and installations – an inspiring mix of contemporary art, design, music and film. Anders-Sundt Jensen, Vice President of Brand Communication at Mercedes-Benz, used the following words to describe the innovative festival concept: “As time and products change, our brand and the way it is presented changes, too.” MercedesBenz took the occasion of the festival, which is scheduled to take place in a different city every year, to present a world premiere: the Concept Style Coupé. Due on the market in 2013, it was impressively unveiled as part of a stunning light and sound show into which it had been perfectly integrated.

Pinxit

Mark Ryden, Taschen, € 750

Not for kids! Pint-sized, big-eyed, with porcelain complexions, the fantastic creatures in this book are only cute at first glance. Look again and they become strange and disturbing. This is hardly surprising because they were invented by pop-surrealist Mark Ryden, an artist well known for the dark premonitions he awakens in those who view his work. Ready for 366 pages of pure fantasy?

Clowns

Cindy Sherman, Schirmer/Mosel, approx. $ 27

Have you read these books or are they waiting their turn? The “TarGetBooks” shelf will tell you at a glance. By Turkish designer Mebrure Oral, price on request.

“I came to clowns to show the complex emotional abysses of a painted smile,” the American artist said as she unveiled her clown photo series in 2004. All 19 photos are being re-published in a book with an essay and an interview on the occasion of the Cindy Sherman retrospective at MoMA in 2012. Smile?!

What’s real, what’s imaginary? The artist duo Cooper & Gorfer use photography and painting in their compositions to create an impressive trompe l’œil effect. The artists travelled to remote parts of Kyrgyzstan to produce My Quiet of Gold, and the result is both alien and wonderfully compelling.

Art Now Vol. 3

Hans Werner Holzwarth, Taschen, approx. € 10

Who’s hot, who’s not? This is the guide to the art world’s contemporary movers and shakers, and a must for anyone who doesn’t want to wait ten years to find out what they could easily know today. Art Now Vol. 3 is an A-Z of important artists and the most promising talent in the art scene, complete with contact details for top galleries as well as market prices and auction results.

Interior Pop!

Individuality is key: companies from Zurich to Singapore are using space to express and promote their corporate identity. Designers like Zaha Hadid transform interior spaces into three-dimensional canvases and invite viewers to explore fantastic new realities.

The Sky’s the Limit

R.Klanten/S.Ehmann/S.Borges (Eds.), Gestalten, approx. € 50

High, higher, highest was yesterday’s motto. Today’s architecture makes use of shape and form more freely than ever before, and what constitutes walls and roofs is becoming more and more incredible. The architecture featured in this 288-page tome is far removed from mere buildings and is based on visionary designs. MA

racing cars. The famous cars with the Cavallino Rampante, the prancing black stallion against a yellow background, have attained the status of artworks. And as an example of Italian cultural heritage, they have now earned themselves their very own museum. The competition for the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari, which was held in 2004, was won by the Czech architect Jan Kaplický. After his death, his former partner Andrea Morgante (pictured) took over the project and completed the distinctive building, which is shaped like the hood of a gigantic car and features giant skylights echoing the appearance of air vents. “It was a unique project which was primarily about uniting tradition and innovation, two aspects that are linchpins of the company’s philosophy.” After a construction period of only two years, during which the London-based architect and designer was aided by marine engineers, the dramatic hood now rises majestically out of what used to be an industrial site in Modena. Unlike the gas-guzzling sports car that inspired it, the building itself is exceptionally eco-friendly: the sculpted aluminum roof, which covers an area of 3,300 square meters, was built to comply with the latest energy-saving parameters and the museum is the first building in Italy to be equipped with geothermal heating, a photovoltaic system and water recycling. The hangar-like structure squats next to the 1830s building where Enzo Ferrari was UA born and which now houses an exhibition documenting the company’s history.
