Area Feature • Helena
Historic Helena Montana may be known as the state’s capital, but those who have personally experienced the area have come to discover its captivating history and abounding cultural lifestyle. The Helena area grew rapidly in popularity during the 1864 gold rush in the Rockies along the Last Chance Gulch. With the discovery of over $19 million worth of gold in only 4 years, one can imagine how the area swelled with over-eager miners and their accompanying families. Due to the major increase in residents, Helena was named the territorial capital of Montana in 1875. Since then the town has built upon its vibrant past through creating a welcoming place for both locals and visitors alike. Due in part to its memorable past, Helena has paid homage to history by preserving various sites and structures reminiscent of a bygone era. The most notable and outstanding of these is the Cathedral of Helena, a looming Gothic cathedral built in 1908. This famous cathedral stands out not only because of its 230 ft. twin spires which stand guard atop the roof, but also because there are very few places in America where true Gothic architecture can be found. Whereas most Americans travel abroad to find massive cathedrals and ornate churches, here is an American-made cathedral of impressive design and build that can be viewed on any day without the hassle of international travel. Being the capital of Montana, Helena is home to the state’s grandiose capitol building. Built in 1902, the structure’s exterior is a balanced combination of brass and marble while the interior is embellished with varying original works of American art. This magnificent capitol sits amid 10 acres of sprawling lawns and gardens as it casts its dignified shadow over the Prickly Pear Valley. The Governor’s Mansion, a Queen Anne style home located near the capitol, is another historic building that was originally built in 1888 by a local prominent man of wealth. Later it was bought to serve as the residence for the governor, and remained the main residence until 1959, when the building of a more modern and up to date home was initiated. Tours are available at this lovely piece of land which include the main house, a 3 story building with over 20 rooms, and the carriage house, all situated on one acre. As for the cultural appeal in Helena, there’s plenty to choose from. Unique local breweries and restaurants are spotted across the town, and many trails and nature walks attract outdoor enthusiasts in multitudes. Helena’s advantageous location between Glacier Nat’l Park and Yellowstone Nat’l Park provides a welcome and interesting rest stop to any visitor tired from the fatigue of road tripping. Visiting Helena is the perfect opportunity to get out, see some history, taste local cuisine, and relax for a bit before heading to the next adventure.
