This Summit will focus on the Southern Appalachian states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, and specifically on rural communities. Urban partners are encouraged to attend and consider joint policy interests.

Featured speakers: Anne B. Pope serves as the tenth federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), an economic development partnership between the federal government and 13 governors. Among her public appointments, Pope served in the cabinet of Tennessee Governor Sundquist as Commissioner of the Department of Commerce and Insurance and as the Executive Director of the Film, Entertainment, and Music Commission. In the private sector, Pope has served as President of Proffitt’s of the Tri-Cities, Inc. and as President/CEO for the Parks-Belk Company. She is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and grew up in Kingsport, TN.
Mark Sorrells is Senior Vice President for the Golden Leaf Foundation, a nonprofit funded through the North Carolina settlement agreement with cigarette manufacturers. Sorrells oversees the Foundation’s day-today operations as it helps North Carolinians transition from a tobacco dependent economy. Previously, he was Executive Director for NC REAL (Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning) Enterprises. He serves on the NC Commision on Workforce Development and the Kentucky Governor’s Planning Committee for the Appalachian Crafts Center. He earned his MBA and BS from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He grew up near Waynesville, NC and has worked in family owned businesses since the age of seven.
