[ MISSION & VISION ]

LETTER FROM CATHY Milestones offer great opportunities for reflection. This year marked EWB-USA’s 10th anniversary, and I can say with confidence we are stronger than ever. You don’t have to take my word for it--this overview of 2012 shows the strengths of the global leaders we are proud to call our members as well as the many programmatic success stories of the EWB-USA headquarters team. But we didn’t do this alone. EWB-USA is fortunate to have many great assets that have helped us reach this milestone. Our members, donors, community partners and staff unite diverse skills and resources that have allowed our impact to grow exponentially. Although skills and resources are essential, passion for our mission is what brought us to this point and drives us forward into the next decade. In 2002, EWB-USA began with a handful of passionate individuals. Today, we are a vast, diverse network of 13,800 dedicated members. These hard-working members volunteer their time to more than 300 chapters across the United States working in 47 countries around the world. Passion was and always will be our tie that binds. I invite you to flip through the 2012 Annual Report and celebrate the accomplishments of EWB-USA’s global movement to build a better world. I’m eager to see where this continued momentum carries us in our next decade! Sincerely,

Cathy Leslie 4

SNAPSHOT OF AN EWB-USA PROGRAM

Chapter: Lehigh Valley Professional Chapter Location: Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone

Our programs originate with a community self-identifying their needs and requesting support from EWB-USA. Our members work with the community to assess, design, implement and monitor appropriate solutions for water supply, sanitation, energy, agriculture, civil works, structures and information systems. The EWB-USA Lehigh Valley Professional Chapter’s (EWB-USA LVP) partnership with the Centennial Secondary School in Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone exemplifies the breadth of the EWB-USA community development model. Ten years ago, rebels occupied the Centennial Secondary School during the Sierra Leone Civil War. The war took a significant toll on both the community and its infrastructure. As a result, the school’s water supply, sanitation system and electrical systems were completely destroyed.

TIMELINE

The EWB-USA LVP chapter united with the community in Mattru Jong in 2009 to design a multidisciplinary program to improve all facets of the school’s infrastructure. Today, the school is reopened and currently educates approximately 1,500 students.

The most prolific impact of EWB-USA’s work across the globe is the transfer of knowledge. Our education initiatives lay the foundation for all EWB-USA programs. From classroom to the field, they offer our members transformative experiences that enrich global perspectives and create responsible leaders. EWB-USA’s 2012 conference series gave our members the opportunity to collaborate, network and share best practices through multiple events, including the international conference in the spring and seven regional conferences in the fall.

EWB-USA conferences always inspire me to keep moving forward. I don’t think I could have had a more rewarding time and learned more anywhere else. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

We celebrated EWB-USA’s 10th anniversary at the 2012 international conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
