Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service. It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them. Steve Jobs

Many desperate acts of design (including gradients, drop shadows, and the gratuitous use of transparency) are perpetuated in the absence of a strong concept. A good idea provides a framework for design decisions, guiding the work. Noreen Morioka I would show my jobs to my mother, and she would always say the same thing: “That’s nice dear.”•And then she would say, ”Did you write it?”•or “Did you do the drawing?”•or ‘Did you take the pictures?”•I’d always answer “no,”•then I realized the problem. My answer was then, “I made this happen. The problem is there are no simple “right” answers for most Web design questions (at least not for the important ones). What works is good, integrated design that fills a need—carefully thought out, well executed, and tested. As a rule, conventions only become conventions if they work. It doesn’t matter how many times I have to click, as long as each click is a mindless, unambiguous choice. In reality, though, most of the time we don’t choose the best option—we choose the first reasonable option, a strategy known as satisficing. If you want a great site, you’ve got to test. After you’ve worked on a site for even a few weeks, you can’t see it freshly anymore. You know too much. The only way to find out if it really works is to test it. Steve Krug

Websites should look good from the inside and out. Websites promote you 24/7: No employee will do that. A website without SEO is like a car with no gas. Running a business without marketing will kill it. Great web design without functionality is like a sports car with no engine. Paul Cookson Most sites need to prevent breadth — many many pages that are organized cohesively. A site that presents a single webpage is unlikely to present sufficient depth of content to justify extensive SEO. The SCO trick is to draw traffic with desirable content, and to ’seduce’ the traffic into portions of the site that may not directly have anything to do with the content — this is the ultimate goal of the SEO campaign. Harold Davis 58
Visual design is often the polar opposite of engineering: trading hard edges for subjective decisions based on gut feelings and personal experiences. It’s messy, unpredictable, and notoriously hard to measure. The apparently erratic behavior of artists drives engineers bananas. Their decisions seem arbitrary and risk everything with no guaranteed benefit. Scott Stevenson Remember, the web isn't about control. If a visitor to your site is familiar with using a browser's native form doodad, you won't be doing them any favors if you override the browser functionality with your own widget, even if you think your widget looks better. Jeremy Keith The site's look and feel (and overall UX) feels 10 years old. I wouldn't trust the content EVEN if it were great, because the UX is so rough. Rand Fishkin 59
Why is it when some people decide to ask for some action, they lose their minds on the appearance of the page? Bad fonts, garish colors, cheap highlighting, and silly clip art do not make for better conversions in most cases. What they do is crush your credibility Brian Clark The other big factor in building trust quickly is site design quality. Mint.com has one of the best graphic designers ever (Jason Putorti) – he cares about every pixel, all the fonts, all the transparencies and effects. And that shows instantly. People do make judgments of trust on appearance – in the real world and online. Aaron Patzer When a designer gives you a bill, what do you see it as? An expense, right? When a designer gives me a bill, I see it as an investment. For me, it is something that appreciates and helps your business grow. Neil Patel 60
The difference between a Designer and Developer, when it comes to design skills, is the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it. Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. Apple Commercial
