2016 EastWest Institute Awards Gala October 5, 2016 | New York City

Chairman’s Letter

I

would like to personally welcome all of our distinguished guests from across the globe to the EastWest Institute 2016 Awards Gala. It is a true pleasure to recognize our esteemed honorees this evening with the John Edwin Mroz Global Statesman Award. Both Mr. Tung Chee Hwa and Mr. Maurice R. Greenberg have proven their leadership in helping to forge U.S.-China dialogue, and strengthen bilateral relations between these two countries. Mr. Tung and Mr. Greenberg have made exceptional contributions towards improving understanding and collaboration between the U.S. and China on issues pertaining to commercial and economic development, education and culture. They have both been long engaged with the EastWest Institute, making an indelible impact on our China, East Asia and United States Program—in particular, proving highly instrumental on our Sanya Initiative, which regularly brings together retired U.S. and Chinese senior generals and admirals, in order to build stronger military-to-military ties, and to better understand mutual issues and concerns to help prevent potential conflict. Their support and thought leadership is invaluable to the EastWest Institute, just as it is to numerous other organizations and policymakers. More than ever, their efforts underline the growing need for “east-west” cooperation and mutual understanding, and it is with this in mind that we honor them this evening. Thank you for joining us.
