EXAKTA VP A VERSION (A 1), 1933 #403455

This was the first Exakta! This version is very rare with its 22mm in diameter milled knob for film tranport and shutter tensioning. The lens thread diameter is 39,5mm with 0,5mm pitch. This camera is in very fine condition, except the left curtain (as often happens, wrinkled). The camera works but the curtains must be registered. No sun and moon over logo Ihagee.

Si tratta della prima Exakta prodotta. Questa versione Ă¨ molto rara, riconoscibile dal pomello di ricarica (diametro 22mm e di spessore maggiore rispetto a quello del modello successivo (26mm). Questo esemplare funziona ed Ă¨ in straordinarie condizioni, ad eccezione della tendina di sinistra, arricciata, le tendine vanno registrate. Non ci sono sole e luna sopra il logo Ihagee.

EXAKTA VP A VERSION (A 2), 1933 #412148

This is the second version of the VP A, made in 1993. The pith is 0,75mm while the knob diameter increses to 26mm. The lens is cloudy and the black paint shows corrosion near the speed dial. The camera is in good condition except the curtains who are dry and pinholed. The synch plug on the left side was added.

Questa è la seconda versione dell’Exakta, prodotta sempre nel 1933. Il passo aumenta a 0,75, il diametro del pomello di ricarica passa a 26mm. L’obiettivo e opaco e lo smalto nero presenta segni di corrosione vicino alla ghiera dei tempi. Per il resto la macchina è in buone condizioni salvo le tendine che sono secche. La presa sincro è stata aggiunta.

This 3rd version is like the preceding one except for the lens infinity lock lever (now on the left hand side). The camera is in avg condition, the curtains are bad even if the shutter fires.

I added this camera to my collection for the film pressure plate. It looks professionaly made like the number viewer on the back of the camera which was added up/down. The camera is in fine condition, but it doesn’t work (curtains, as usually).

This camera is in bad functional condition, bad curtains, the lever doesn’t reload the shutter, the ground glass is missing, mirror with some discoloration but cosmetically fine, good for display. I bought it because of its film window (professionaly made) and take-up spools for 828 film, the same used by the Kodak Bantam cameras.

Questa macchina non funziona: le tendine sono in brutte condizioni, la leva di carica non carica l’otturatore, il vetro di messa a fuoco manca, lo specchio è in parte scolorito ma esteticamente è bella, ottima per mostra. L’ho comprata perchè adattata professionalemente alla pellicola 828, la stessa usata nelle serie delle Kodak Bantam.

In the traditional version 2 there is the milled knob instead of lever, so I called this camera Version 2-3-4 (the 4 is for the bipolar plug). Cosmetically good, bad curtains (need to be replaced)

Il blocco dell’infinito è sulla destra e per giunta c’è la presa bipolare vacublitz (come nella versione 4). Nella versione 2 l’avanzamento della pellicola avviene col pomello da 22mm, mentre in questo caso c’è la leva di carica, così ho attribuito a questa macchina la versione 2-3-4 (un cocktail). Esteticamente buona, tendine pessime.

Usually the two holes connection VP (V 4) had serial numbers below 480000 (I had ten of them) and the chrome version (V 6) is in the range 515000-535000 (I must find an article by Tim Sharples, where he writes about ranges of the different models). This camera is made few months after V 4 so I call it V 4chrome. The camera works and it is in fine condition.

Di solito le macchine con presa flash a due connettori (versione 4) hanno numeri di serie inferiori a 480000 (ne ho avute una decina) mentre la versione cromata ha numeri di serie nel range 515000-535000 (su Exakta Times c’era una ricerca di Tim Sharples sui range dei diversi modelli). Sulla base di queste considerazioni questo modello è stato prodotto pochi mesi dopo la versione 4 e quindi le attribuisco il nome di V 4chrome. La macchina funziona bene ed è bella esteticamente.

Not easy to find. Black body and leatherette (small grain, easy to see the differences with the VP leather). Milled knob for shutter setting. Wind knob. No vacublitz sockets. Ihagee Anastigmat 7,5/4,5 without number. Slight corrosion on chrome finish, as usually. Shutter fires, the curtains’ condition is very fine even if the left curtain, when you press the release button, moves slowly.

Non facile da trovare. Corpo nero e finta pelle a grana sottile, facile da confrontare con la pelle delle VP). Ghiera dei tempi zigrinata. Non c’è ancora l’attacco per il flash. Obiettivo Ihagee Anastigmat 7,5/4,5 senza numero di serie. Leggera ossidazione delle parti cromate. EXAKTA VP NIGHT “1/400” AND OTHER ODDITIES Hereafter you can find few lines and some pictures about some rare VPs. The message arrived from Jim Hayes, Detroit, US, on Oct 24, 1996. Jim wrote few lines on the back of the photos. I use them as titles. Then I use some parts of his letter, so everything can be better understood. A photo copy of your the same kind of Exakta Chrome Night Exakta unique VP B was cameras and Ihagee with no serial # sent to me by a mutual friend, Gary Cullen. I find it very interesting and wondered if what other odd and unusual Ihagee cameras were out there. I have requested that the Exakta Circle survey the Members to see what they have, send photos and even write articles on them. I have sought information on one of my Night Exaktas, a chrome one with no serial number and 400th second on the fast speed dial and 1/5th second on the slow speed knob instead of 1/10th second. Which speed does your’s have? (Reply: 400th and 1/10th) Your camera differs from mine in that mine has a focusing scale in feet, is a Night Exakta with no serial number, and has a Biotar lens. It may be that we have

used what parts that were available to assemble as many cameras as possible at the end of the VP production. Remove the lens mount to see if there are two scews in the focusing mechanism as in the sketch. Your camera has an unusual lens arangement that look like my chrome Schneider except for the added extension ring. I’ve never tried it but I wonder if a VP would focus properly if a night lens was installed with no other adjustments, and I also wonder if that added extension is to bring the lens forward enough to focus to infinity. If the extension ring is really removable (Reply: No) you might try focusing with a VP C back. It might have been the making of a new C. Who knows just what was on Ihagee’s mind?

This brings me to mind another odd Exakta bought at a camera show last month. It is a chrome B with a chrome Exakta junior lens mount with serial number 590772. According to IHG in 1988 590751 was the

latest serial number known for a Junior. The lens is an Ihagee Anastigmat M f 3,5 7,3cm (is the M for Meyer ?) . Who would screw up a rare Chrome Exakta Junior to create an oddity like this? Again; could it be that in closing out the VP model it was decided by Ihagee to assemble any and all parts that would fit to use up all remaining parts, thus creating strange bed fellows?

In addition to previously mentioned oddities I’m enclosing photos of a VP B with no focusing scale, modified viewfinder with 38mm magnifier, masked off focusing screen and film chamber to sqaure format, red window lowered to correspond to lower numbers on film, and an additional aperture scale. The infinity lock engages when focused to either extreme.

EXAKTA VP C VERSION (A 5), 1939 #??????

Non ho mai visto un’altro esemplare di questa versione. L’ho comprata per posta in un negozio di Vienna. Quando la macchina è arrivata ho scritto al venditore che mi ha fatto uno sconto: l’elicoide originale, mancante come l’anello distanziatore, era stata sostituito da uno preso da una VP B. A questo punto ho aggiunto questo strano obiettivo Schneider. Avevo pensato di sostituire la parte riadattata con una presa da un’altra C chrome, ma...

I never saw this version before buying this camera (by post) from a shop in Wien. When the camera arrived I wrote to the seller. The original lens mount was replaced by a VP B and, of course the numbered ring was missing. I added this strange Schneider lens to increase the oddity! I had one (bought from David Woodford, at those times he was my contact at Jessop’s, London). I did not know which version it was. Stein Falchenberg wrote me... IHAGEE (JR) - CLASSIFICATION I am a lucky collector. Mimmi Zucco (a wellknown Italian dealer and collector) sold me a VP Night, in very fine condition. Few days later he called me an he told me that an English dealer had an Exakta Jr (marked Ihagee) for sale. I replied immediately “Buy it for me, don’t discuss about the price”. A week later I had it at home (#413629, lens Ihagee 611169), together with the first one (#413561, lens Ihagee 611129 then sold, as I promised to do, to a friend collector), out of the small initial first batch of perhaps at most 50 cameras as you can read on the following letter from the late Stein Falchenberg: “You should be very pleased to have got one of the rare and little known Ihagee Jr. cameras. I have known of these cameras for many years... Most if not all that has been written in modern times have ignored this camera, but interestingly it is illustrated as the Junior in Gerhart Isert prewar “Standard” Exakta book. Even Hummel in his new book refers

only to Exakta Jr. Anyway it is quite clear that the original model was called Ihagee Jr, and I have a group of 4 serial numbers between 413522 and 561, a small initial batch of perhaps at most 50 cameras. Then one at 418888 and surprisingly a sole Exakta JR AT 419059, and then the first batch of Exakta Jr from 429362 to 430270, say 1000 cameras. It may be significant that the sole early Exakta Jr which appears to be of the same batch as the last Ihagee Jr was in USA. Perhaps the US importer insisted on the camera being Exaktas?” I never had the Hummel’s book simply because I do not undestand the German language. There was the idea of translating this book in English, I think that Thomas Ackermann begun with Exakta pages.

Ihagee Jr Classification Few of them were made. In the upper table you can look at the list of the survived Ihagee Jrs. Here you can find the body number, the lens number (all lenses are Ihagee Anastigmat ), the owners, where the cameras were bought and, where you read yes or not, yes means that there is the red window sliding cover on the back. On the last column the day of assembly (you can read here after the article by Gary Cullen).

I notice two (or perhaps 3) things which are different from the other Ihagee Jr.’s (but I don’t have your experience with these rarities). 1. - No Sun and Moon on the hood (like an early A). Perhaps the factory used no Sun and Moon logo on the early Ihagee Jr. since there is already one engraved on the front plate of the camera? 2. - No guide or locking feature on the lens when pulled out. On the Exakta Jr.’s that I own, you pull out and turn to lock the lens in place. This camera has no lock or guide mechanism to prevent the lens tube from rotating. The tube will rotate 360 degrees even when collapsed. Perhaps this is the original design of the Jr. and the factory realized the difficulty of using a lens without a tube that locks into place? I think the problem was fixed very fast. I’ll inspect the lens mount to see if this feature is original (or perhaps a part is missing)when I disassemble the camera to find the mirror date. 3. - Location of serial number on the lens mount.

It’s been found that most of the prewar Exaktas have dates written in pencil on the back of their mirrors. This could lead to a lot more knowledge of prewar Ihagee cameras in regards to production if we collect enough numbers over time. This is for the Ihagee Jr but is similar for most other VP Exaktas as well. 1. - remove the 4 front lens mount screws and remove the lens assembly. 2. - set the shutter to "Z" and open the shutter, to release the shutter you will have to press down on the shutter lock release, it’s the piece of thick wire sticking out of the bottom of the mirror

(it will not damage the camera) 4. - lift tabs on either end of mirror (see photo) 5. - use the hook to pull the back of the mirror down about 5mm 6. - look through the back at the exposed bottom edge of the mirror glass and check for a date. The camera in the photo has the number on the bottom right edge (as viewed in the photo) and it’s 3/ 10/33. The serial number of the camera is 413561.

If you look at the front of this camera you can classify it as a Exakta Junior. But if you look at the back you can find the “C” back. A distance ring is needed and you look for it. You find it. So this camera is not the usual Jr. It is a very rare camera. You can find more information on third page of this pdf. The camera is in very nice condition.

If you ask to Douglas St.Denny, the Editor of Camprice.com, he knows that this camera was referred him by a wellknown collector (I think to remember he was Myron Wolf) This is the only one I found during years.
