Man’s best friend comes in all sizes, colors and breeds. Dogs, or as I like to call them “K-9 Americans,” have been an integral part of human lives for as far back as the Upper Paleolithic period, about 40,000 years ago. Dogs love you unconditionally. They are delightful creatures that offer companionship and stability to many people’s lives. There are about 340 breeds of dogs in the world, so anyone can find the breed of dog that fits them best. Dogs give you sloppy kisses, furry cuddles and those puppy dog eyes are enough to melt the coldest of hearts.

There are so many wonderful benefits that come with owning a dog. Dogs can offer both mental and physical health benefits to their owners. These benefits include: •Dogs can lift your spirits- Researchers have found that spending 15–30 minutes with your dog can help you feel more tranquil and peaceful. Also, your dopamine and serotonin levels increase when you play with your dog. Puppy kisses really do make everything better, right? •Ditch the medicine and get a dog- Dogs have been known to increase the health of their owners, except those who have pet allergies. Dog owners have been found to have lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and fewer heart attacks. Instead of a visit to the pharmacy, go to your local pet shelter and adopt a dog!
•Dogs keep you in shape- Owning a dog encourages you to exercise more. Taking your pooch for a stroll or even tossing around the Frisbee are great activities to boost physical health. Walk into shape with your dog by your side! If you don’t already have a fur baby or if you just want another, there are several pet adoption centers in Mobile. EXALTE MAN
The word “gentleman” can drum up countless meanings. Some people hear the word gentlemen and think of a polite, respectable man. To some, the word can mean just your average guy. For others, the word gentleman conjures the image of the typical 1950s man who pulls out the seat for his date. Unfortunately in today’s society, it seems that true gentlemen are hard to come by. Being a gentleman is a lifestyle. There are actions, rules and requirements that must be met and executed. A gentleman is sophisticated, stylish, cultured and so much more. •Dress to impress: Wear a suit, tie and nice shoes, especially in a work/professional environment. Your casual look should include nice jeans or khakis and polo shirts. Limit your jewelry to a watch, tasteful rings (class ring or wedding ring), or a simple necklace. •Be polite: Whenever you are in a social surrounding make sure you are always polite. Always be punctual. There is nothing ruder than being late, and a gentleman is never rude. Have contact, especially when you are meeting new people.
•Be well-groomed: The scruffy, 5 o’clock shadow look is not charming. Put effort into your appearance. Keep yourself clean, showered, and groomed. •Know how to treat a lady: Be respectable to women. Listen to them when they speak to you. Hold the door open for them. Never swear or cuss in front of a woman. It’s just in poor taste.

The holidays are swiftly approaching, and with that comes the stress of gift giving. But why stress over gifts, when we should be enjoying the company of our families and loved ones. In a study conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, researchers found that 38 percent of people experience an increase in stress during the holidays. During the holidays, stress takes on a different form than at any other time of the year. People feel a responsibility to make the holidays enjoyable for their families. Commercialism always increases during the holidays as stores and companies burden us to purchase expensive gifts. The real challenge is whether or not families can accomplish the perfect holiday without creating stress or racking up financial debt. This holiday season, try to stray
away from conventional gift giving and the anxiety that accompanies it. There are numerous ways to give meaningful gifts to friends and family without breaking the bank or your sanit y. The unconventional gift is cool, significant and can be less stressful when picking out.
The gift of nostalgia:
Who doesn’t love looking back on old photos and reminiscing on great times? Create a photo album for your loved one this holiday season. Include the good, the ugly and the silly. It’ll be super amusing flipping through pictures, and it’s a sure fire way to drum up some gifting excitement. You can create a printed photo album or if you’re more technologically inclined, you can create a digital photo album.
The tasty gift: If the person you’re gifting to is a self-proclaimed food connoisseur, then forgo the conventional restaurant gift card this year and give them a personalized food basket. You can include exotic, appetizing foods that they’ve never tried before. This gift caters to their taste buds and shows how much you care. The gift of culture: Do you have a friend or
family member who loves experiencing new and engaging things? Then the gift of culture is just what they need. Sign them up for a cooking class or a salsa dance class. Get them tickets to an art museum or to an upcoming play. This is a gift that they will cherish because it is so unique to them and it’s an experience they will be able to truly appreciate.
The crafty gift: Try your hand at a DIY (do it yourself) gift. It’s a gift that shows you put
time, effort and a personal touch on. There are millions of DIY ideas floating around the internet. All you have to do is pick one that best fits the person you’re giving it to.
The gift of charity: The holidays are all about giving back, so when all is said and
done, why not gift give to a charity this year. Local charities such as Ronald McDonald House Charities are great organizations to give to. Ronald McDonald House provides a supportive home environment to families with seriously ill and injured children being treated at local hospitals. You can prepare meals for the residents of Ronald McDonald House or give items that are on their wish list. Other organizations such as Heifer International offer various ways to help those that are impoverished. Heifer International is a charity organization working to end hunger and poverty around the world by providing livestock and training to struggling communities. A monetary donation can provide a family with an animal that will help them become self-sufficient in their community.
"Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to." Deuteronomy 15:10

de Happy Attitude… By Audra Warren
Photography by Elle Photography
Several years ago my health took an unexpected turn for the worst, and I found myself standing in the middle of one of the darkest periods of my life. Much like a domino effect, every area of my life was derailed off track from my career, to my finances, down to my living space and my personal life. At the time, it was very hard to see the sun through the mass amount of storm clouds that seemed to be an ever present shadow upon me. Social media was on the rise, which could be a good or a bad thing, depending on your perspective. During hard times, it’s easy to view the filtered worlds of your 600 plus friends as that of perfection. In comparison you will always find someone else who seems to have a better life than yours. Focusing on the things that you don’t have will never make you happy or get you what you want. In fact, focusing on what you don’t have is actually the opposite of happy, it’s sad, it’s depressing, and it’s anxiousness at its peak. It’s a toxic waste that needs to be expelled from your mind immediately. In the midst of what I would refer to as the dark ages of my life, I remember watching Oprah and hearing her talk about keeping a gratitude journal. I thought to myself, “that’s really cool Oprah, but I’m sure your journal is much fuller than mine could ever be.” In my mind, her journal went something like this: today I am grateful for my Hollywood hillside mansion with an ocean view and my gourmet breakfast prepared by my very own personal chef. Believe it or not, this was far from the truth. Back in 1996, three of Oprah’s entries from her gratitude journal stood out to me; a run around Florida’s Fisher Island with a slight breeze on my face, eating cold melon on a bench in the sun, and a long and hilarious chat with Gayle about her blind date with Mr. Potato Head. Reading this really struck a chord with me, and forced me to start my own gratitude list. Not only was the third entry pretty funny, Oprah and I actually had very similar things that we were grateful for. I am grateful for a warm cup of coffee every morning, having nieces and nephews I can spoil, laughing about private inside jokes with my closest girlfriends, a bike ride on a pretty day, quality time with my family, a good book on a quiet night alone, and so much more. I found myself realizing that none of these things had anything to do with personal finances, social status, or anything even remotely materialistic. When I started to focus more on the things that I did have, as opposed to the things that I didn’t, I began to see a major shift of improvement in other areas of my life. So, what are you grateful for today? Maybe you are living pay check to pay check, raising a child on your own, or driving an old lemon around town. Focus on the fact that you have a job, a car, and a child that loves you. Someone around the world is without all of those things. Oprah said, “If you focus on what you have, you will end up having more. If you focus on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” I figure she must be onto something…I mean those journal entries are twenty years old now, and just look at the empire she’s built since then. Anytime you start to feel like you are lacking something in your life, take a time out to think on the things you are grateful to have in the present moment.
7 Ways to Become More Grateful …
-Keep a gratitude journal -Express the things you are grateful for to others daily, not just on Thanksgiving -Do something simple that you really enjoy -Spend time with people who lift you up, and let them know you appreciate them -Remember the hard times, for they will make you appreciate how far you have come -Volunteer to help those less fortunate -Write out Thank You Cards the old-fashioned way
7 Proven Benefits of Gratitude… -Improves relationships -Improves mental and physical health -Improves self-esteem -Improves quality of sleep -Improves mental strength -Reduces aggression -Enhances empathy towards others
“Trade your expectation for appreciation and the world changes instantly.” – Tony – TonyRobbins Robbins
“In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. – Brother David Steindl-Rast

Alzheimer's Photography/Makeup by Katco Photography Written by Natalie Franklin
s
It happens to the best of us. Forgetting miniscule things or having lapses of childhood memories. You may find yourself asking, “Where did I put my car keys,” before quickly remembering you placed them on your bedside table. But what happens when you start forgetting the more important things. You can’t recall the date or the name of the woman you worked with for the past 10 years. What happens when your memories become fuzzy and the day’s events have turned into broken pieces that you can’t quite put together? Alzheimer’s disease is a serious condition that affects about 44 million people worldwide, according to alzheimers.net. Millions of people have the disease, and even more, including family and loved ones, are affected by it. But what really is Alzheimer’s disease? Many believe that it’s just forgetfulness that comes with old age, dubbing the disease as “Old Timer’s.” The disease itself is much more complicated than that. To understand Alzheimer’s, you must first understand dementia. According to alz.org, dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. There are several forms of dementia, including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and Vascular dementia. Dementia can impair memory, communication, visual perception and judgment. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. To put it simply, Alzheimer’s disease prevents brain cells from functioning properly, which eventually chips away at the brain. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include:
Difficulty remembering recent conversations, names or events Depression, Impaired communication, Poor judgment, Disorientation and confusion, Behavioral changes, Difficulty speaking, swallowing and walking The disease worsens over time. The less severe symptoms start off small then progress as time goes on. For example, in its beginning phases, memory loss is subtle, however in its later stage, the disease causes individuals to lose the ability to carry on a conversation or even respond to their surroundings. A common question asked is, “How can I prevent or reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia?” Leading researchers suggest that specific lifestyle measures can reduce your risk. These measures include:
Being physically active, Eating a healthy diet, Exercising the brain, Maintaining good cardiovascular health We can’t simply focus on the science behind the disease. We must also focus on the face of the disease, those who are living with Alzheimer’s and experiencing the startling changes. In an article posted to care2.com, several Alzheimer’s patients were asked about their battle with the disease. Their responses were enlightening to say the least. “It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. “ Rick Phelps, diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease at age 57, discussing how he felt after his neurologist informed him of the truth of his condition. “What’s happened with my telling people about my Alzheimer’s has been an incredible deepening of relationships. “ David Hilfiker, remarking on how going public with his diagnosis has been so beneficial to both him and his loved ones. “It’s a terrible disease, but there’s a lot of good left in life. You’ve got to learn to adjust to their world.” Michele DeSocio on how she has learned to find the light inside the darkness while dealing with her mother’s disease. There is care and support available for those battling Alzheimer’s disease right here on the Gulf Coast. The non-profit organization, Gulf Coast Dementia Services, seeks to aid those individuals and their families who are battling Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Their mission is, “to enhance the quality of life for individuals and family members affected by the various types of dementia, Alzheimer’s being the most common, by providing comprehensive education and training throughout our community.” For more information on Gulf Coast Dementia Services, visit their website www.gcseniorservices.com.
Caring for an Alzheimer’s patient goes deeper than treating their physical symptoms. Caregivers must be aware of the mental help that their patients need. If you do care for an individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia, be sure to take these tips under consideration.
Be patient, kind and understanding Talk to them on a regular basis Treat them with respect Show them love and compassion Reassure them Reminisce with them Encourage them Pray for them

“I called the clothing line “Blynd i”. The logo and the name is based on Matthew 5:29. “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out throw it away. It is better to be in Heaven with one eye than in hell with two.”
As a fashion designer I find beauty in the experience of dark times, because that’s where most of my life has been spent. Being homeless, having parents who were drug users and being in foster care helped to shape the outlook I have on the world today. On my 17th birthday, my girlfriend at the time bought me a bunch of fabric paint and a pack of Hanes t-shirts. My love for fashion became real at that point. The person I looked up to the most was Pharrell Williams, so it wasn’t just shirts that I painted on. Anything I could touch during that time I painted. I created art on pants, shoes and even hats. The shirt I remember the most was a Cheetos shirt I made whenI was 17. In art class we had to do a pop art project, and I chose a bag of Cheetos. I was so proud of that painting that I repainted it on a tee shirt.
The next time I really made a splash in my community was when I was in college in New Orleans. I designed my own t-shirts and got them printed up. I called the clothing line “Blynd i”. The logo and the name is based on Matthew 5:29. “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out throw it away. It is better to be in Heaven with one eye than in hell with two.” My first printed t-shirt received a lot of positive feedback. Ever since then I have been trying to get to that same spot.
This past year I have been slowly getting back into the fashion world. In January of 2016, I taught myself how to sew. After putting everything on hold to attend the Mobile Police Academy, I am back with a high-end take on streetwear. My line will be debuting on the runway at Coastal Fashion in New Orleans on Jan. 17, 2017. So this once homeless foster kid with lupus who grew up to be a police officer will make his fashion dreams come true by the grace of God. Photography by Elle Photography

I have always wanted to be a model ever since I first discovered America's Next Top Model when I was in the third grade. I used to watch that show for hours with my older sister. I would watch those beautiful women work in all these amazing places all around the world. When the girls were working and talking, I could see the passion in their eyes, and I wanted that for myself. I got picked on when I was younger, so I was never confident enough to go to any casting calls. A few months after I turned 18 I decided it was time to stop being scared and start taking action. I went to my first casting call for Pensacola Fashion Week. About a month later I received an email stating that I had been picked to walk. It was four days before P.F.W. and my fiancé brought me out on a nice date to the movies. Has Makeup Gone Too Fa By Natalie Franklin
L'Oréal and Tarte and bareMinerals, oh my! The amount of makeup brands on the market today can be quite overwhelming. If having to choose which brand to use isn’t overwhelming enough, women also have to practically become a 20th century artist in order to achieve that “perfect” look. With a stroke of foundation here and a flourish of blush there, women are transforming into somewhat unrecognizable versions of themselves. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian have popularized techniques like contouring. Contouring involves a myriad of makeup products like foundation or bronzer to enhance your facial structure, i.e. the cheek bones, chin and jaw line. If used practically and simplistically, contouring can be a subtle way to enhance your natural face. Keeping it in the family, I’ll move on to Kylie Jenner for my next example. Her look includes not so subtle lips. Before she came clean to the world about getting temporary lip fillers, those lips were infamously referred to as overdrawn, using lip liner and lipstick to make your lips appear plumper and fuller. Her entire face has been transformed into almost a caricature of her former self. Makeup is supposed to enhance your beauty, not change your entire look. Unfortunately, so many women have fallen into the mindset that they need to wear makeup in order to appear beautiful. Most women include makeup into their morning routine. At the sound of the morning alarm, women will migrate towards the bathroom to begin their tedious beauty regime. Speaking from personal experience, the whole routine can be rather monotonous and sometimes strenuous. However, hiding behind foundation and highlighter won’t do you a bit of good. If you don’t want to wear makeup, don’t feel obligated to wear it.
ar?
Recently, Alicia Keys, singer, songwriter and actress, made the decision to stop wearing makeup. Her makeup-free movement has inspired many people to ditch their cosmetics, too. When asked why she no longer wanted to wear makeup, Keys said, “Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul.” If you’re too scared to go completely natural, then try wearing only mascara and a little lip gloss. Start small and work your way up to a nude look. Once you’re comfortable enough to go 100 percent makeup free, you will feel unbelievably liberated.
Remember, makeup is an accessory not a necessity! Photography by Katco Photography Hair and Makeup by Katco Beauty
The Beauty of
ART
By Natalie Franklin
Photography by Katco Photography On Location @ Gallery 450/Exalte’ Magazine
What exactly qualifies as art? Painting, sculpting and drawing always come to mind when art is mentioned, but art is so much more than just these mediums. Art is limitless. Fashion is art. Photography is art. Even cuisine can be art in the hands of a skilled chef. Art is all around us. It is a living expression that can inspire, soothe and influence our lives. For many spectators, art can influence a variety of emotions such as astonishment, sorrow, passion, and even anger. Some artworks produce feelings quickly, while others take time to mull over and consider. Our response to art depends on what we know. Pablo Picasso’s famous painting, “The Old Guitarist,” may drum up different emotions in a musician than it would in a teacher. Art effects different people in many different ways. Art can get you to relax, take a break, and escape from your reality. Art can also spark your personal creativity. The essence of art is expression. You can learn a lot about yourself by sitting down and creating art. Whether your medium is paint, clay, fabric or even pen and paper, you can express yourself in the best way possible.
“Creativity takes courage.” - Henri Matisse
“The greatness of art is not to find what is common but what is unique.” - Isaac Bashevis Singer
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” - Thomas Merton
women in male dominated professions By Natalie Franklin
N
ot too long ago women all over the world were limited in the careers that they could have. Secretaries, librarians, nurses, teachers. These were the jobs that the majority of women who were employed had. While these are all extraordinary careers to have, these were generally the only jobs available to women a few decades ago. However, times have changed. Now it's common to see female doctors, lawyers, police officers, etc. Basically women can have any career that they desire. Today there is no career that a woman can't have. Women can and do succeed in male-dominated fields. Of course there will be tough times, there are tough times in every workplace. Focusing on the positives will give you a better outlook. In some cases, being a woman may even work to your professional advantage. Sometimes a woman's touch is just what a certain project needs. Particular situations may require a woman's intuition. There is no doubt that women are qualified to work in traditionally male dominated fields. Education gives equal opportunity for both males and females to compete for the same jobs. In today's society, it is not uncommon for women to raise a family and maintain a successful career. Actually most women prefer to work, and now there are more options to choose from. Here are some tips for women who work in male-dominated careers or who are considering working in male-dominated careers. 1. Don't second-guess yourself. Always stand by your decision is at work. In most cases, your initial decision is the best decision. Doubting yourself will only make your work suffer. 2. Speak your mind. If you have an idea, don't be afraid to tell your coworkers or your boss. Your ideas are valuable and should be heard. 3. Always be yourself. Don't feel pressured to be "One of the guys." You were hired because you are an unique individual. Don't hide behind a fake persona. 4. Ask for help if you need it. Don't waste your time trying to figure something out on your own. If you need help, ask for it. At some point everyone requires some form of help. Asking for help does not make you weak. 5. Remember everyone makes mistakes. Everyone is bound to make a mistake on the job every now and then. Don't let it defeat you. Learn from your mistakes and move on. As long as you're confident, self-assured and professional you will succeed at any career you choose.

Leatrice Gray- Air Force Reserves Leatrice has been in the military for 13 years, and she currently works with Aircrew Flight Equipment. She was in ROTC for four years in high school, then she went straight to the military. Her oldest child was the driving force for starting her career in the military. Leatrice has faced challenges while being in a traditionally male-dominated career. “Nothing that’s not cliche. Men are always at work. Women have mommy issues...being away from your kids, family issues.” Leatrice has a supportive family that she can rely on if anything ever comes up with work.
Eleni Conditt- police officer at the Mobile Police Department, 4th Precinct Eleni has been with the Mobile Police Department for nine years. She knew she wanted to be a police officer since she was about 5 years old. “I’ve always believed in justice and doing the right thing and helping people when they are in trouble.” Officer Conditt faces challenges from her coworkers and from the public as a female police officer. “Some people think that women don’t need to be in this line of work because it’s dangerous or there’s too much physical effort. Sometimes the guys [her coworkers] will like to step up and try to take over my calls, and I have to give them a look and say, ‘okay, back up.’” People say, “Aren’t you afraid?” Her response is, “yes I am afraid, I am a human being.” Officer Conditt is a great police officer and a beautiful woman. She is further proof that women can and do succeed in traditionally male-dominated careers.

Blinders By Natalie Franklin
Do you ever find yourself walking through life with your head down? Do you walk past people on the street without even mumbling so much as a “hello?” Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you do this? Most of us go through life with our blinders on, never stopping to think about our fellow neighbors. We are all guilty of it. Perhaps you’re focused on your own problems, be it financial, personal or spiritual. There’s nothing wrong with concentrating on your own problems (how else are they going to get solved). The problem ensues when we become so consumed with our own issues, that we become totally blind to everything and everyone else around us. A kind word to a passing stranger can go much further than you could ever imagine. The Bible says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” A simple smile to the man you pass by in the store or a greeting to your mail lady when she delivers the mail can really lift a person’s mood. Some of us are so used to not being spoken to by our community neighbors, that when it does happen, it’s a pleasant surprise. Take the time to say hello to the woman you pass in the parking lot. Smile at the man who’s ringing you up at the store. Once we come together as a human race and be kind to one another, the world will be a much better place.
