10 KNOW Things you should
in High School
By Natalie Franklin
You don’t have to be in a romantic relationship to have fun in high school Your GPA does not define your intelligence There is nothing wrong with standing out from the crowd Always be your true self Don’t procrastinate Study Don’t sweat the small stuff Be nice to your teachers Talk to you school counselor Don’t be afraid to make mistakes

Peer pressure is defined as “influence from members of one’s peer group.” Typically, your peers are your classmates, teammates, really anyone your age that you are around for the majority of your time. Your peers are your friends. But what happens when your friends try to pressure you to do something you don’t feel comfortable with. Succumbing to peer pressure can lead you to make poor decisions. Sometimes it feels difficult to tell you friends “no.” So how do you say no to peer pressure? Deliver a firm and resounding “NO”: Make eye contact and say “No” with confidence. The more certain you are in yourself, the less people will pester you. Leave the situation: Don’t stick around if you don’t feel comfortable. It’s fine to make an exit and go somewhere else. Avoid the situation completely: If you know there’s going to be some activities at a party that make you uncomfortable or that you don’t agree, then just don’t go. Make other plans! Find a mutual friend: Stick with a buddy who shares the same beliefs as you. You two will be able to back each other and hold each other accountable. Like the saying goes, two heads are better than one. Don’t fall for cliché lines: “Everyone’s doing it.” NOT true. You’re not doing it, and if you’re not doing it, that means there are others who aren’t doing it either. By Natalie Franklin

Friendships: Friends provide both mental and emotional support. They are there for us when we are happy and sad. They can make us laugh and cry. Friendships are important to us and it’s important that we maintain our friendships. Stay in touch with your friends. Hangout as often as possible. Tell them how important they are to you. They will appreciate the kind words.

Boyfriend/girlfriend relationships: Nourishing your romantic relationship is important to maintain it. Be kind to your partner. Listen to them, and don’t be afraid to share your feelings. Always be yourself in a relationship. Be honest to your partner and the relationship will blossom. Parent/Child relationship: Maintaining a loving relationship with your parents starts with showing respect and gratitude towards them. They’ve cared for you your entire life and dedicated their lives to your well-being. Showing respect towards them goes a long way. Once you give them respect, they show you respect as well. They will be able to recognize your maturity and applaud you for it.

Bullying By Natalie Franklin
Photographed by Elle Photography
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. This old adage is just that: old. Words do hurt. They affect us emotionally and mentally. The reasons for being bullied reported most often by students were looks (55 percent), body shape (37 percent), and race (16 percent), according to Davis and Nixon, 2010. It seems that bullies are everywhere. One out of every four students (22 percent) report being bullied during the school year, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics, 2015.
Bullies are in school, on your sports team and most especially on social media. Social media has given a whole new rise to bullies. In fact, 14.8% of high school students in the US reported being bullied online, according to the Center for Disease Control, 2014. These bullies hide behind computer screens to taunt you.
If you are being bullied, don’t lose faith! Don't let anyone's ignorance, hate or negativity being the best person you can be. Instead, use the light inside of you to help brighten cruelty can be hard to handle, but there are resources available to help you. “It might b it can’t rain forever.”
•Tell someone: Don’t be afraid to talk to your parents or tell a teacher. They can and will help you. •Don’t see yourself as the problem: The person who is bullying you is the one with the issue, not you. •Don’t isolate yourself: Distancing yourself from support won’t resolve the issue. Isolating yourself will only make things worse. Surround yourself with po people who will listen to you and help you.
y prevent you from the world. The be stormy now, but
ositive
If you see someone being bullied, don’t be a bystander. You do more harm than good when you don’t say anything. Get help or speak up. Use these tips to help combat bullying. •Be an example for others. Saying a kind word to students as they pass you in the hall or helping someone who has dropped their books are great ways to be a kind example for other students. Your positive behavior will spread throughout school. •Stick up for someone you see being bullied. Let that bully know that what they’re doing is wrong. •Don’t like, share or post any material online that is being used to bully another person. You’re just adding fuel to the fire and hurting someone in the process.

It is quite possible that you have checked social media in the past 5 minutes before reading this article. Social media is such a major part of our reality now. Instagram, Twitter and Facebook are the most prevalent social media sites, but there are several more. These sites enable you to post pictures for all your friends to see. But what happens when you’re always an observer, and you find yourself looking at other people’s posts as opposed to making your own. Sometimes this affects your mood. You feel jealous or sad that you aren’t at that cool party or shopping with you friends. Some would say you’re experiencing FOMO, “fear of missing out.” We’ve all had those lazy weekends. Those days where you don’t feel like going out, so you just cuddle up on your couch and binge watch Netflix. It seems like those are the times when everyone else is going out and partying without you! Constantly seeing other people’s portrayal of happiness while you’re stuck at home having a boring weekend can literally be the worst feeling in the world.

Social media is designed to connect people, but in most situations it doesn’t connect people, instead it creates more distance. Rather than living in the moment and enjoying what’s in front of us, we’re too busy snapping pictures. Then we spend an insurmountable amount of time posting these pictures to numerous sites in hopes to impress someone or make others jealous. Social media is addicting. That’s why people’s faces are constantly glued to their phones. No one can seem to put their phones down. According to venturebeat.com, there are 1 billion+ users on Twitter. As of December 2014, there are 890 million daily active users on Facebook, reports newsroom.fb.com. It was recently stated on blog.instagram.com that there are more than 200 million users on Instagram. A report on emarketer.com estimated that in 2014, 1.97 billion people used social networking sites. This means that 28.14 percent of the population uses social media, and these numbers are only going to grow!
Excessive use of social media correlates to depression. Honestly, FOMO is just another form of depression. Constantly comparing your life to others is very dangerous. Who’s to say that the people on your Timeline are super happy with their lives? They could be feeling the exact same way you are feeling, but they are playing the age-old game: fake it till you make.
Limited social media use is a freeing feeling. You won’t be as attached to yo nor will you harbor feelings of jealousy or sadness towards others.
This must be what the generation before us felt like with a life with no socia Blissfully happy!
our phone,
al media:
To ward off your case of FOMO try to reduce your social networking use. Here are some things you can do instead of using social media:

Read a book Go for a walk Do some crafting Watch a movie Listen to music
