Editor's Letter Back in 2009, I was diagnosed with incurable Follicular Lymphoma. It was ironically one of the hardest days of my life as well as one of the best days of my life. Hard to explain if you have never been in that situation. Being diagnosed with something that is scientifically giving you 7 to 10 years to live is an eye opener. Through my journey I have had a lot of time to think about what is important. Early on in my diagnosis, I had a dream that I was going to write a book. I was wearing work books with a pink gown on the cover. I couldn't figure out why I would have on work boots. Sometimes you just can't see the obvious when you are in the middle of it. After telling my friend about the dream, she laughed at me and said that I was working for the Lord in a glamorous way. The work boots represented my steps and works in my new life following Christ completely. It was one of those moments that I knew I was suppose to inspire the world with my story and my talents. The ugly black work boots became bright, shiny bling boots in all colors. I wear my bling boots anytime I do public speaking, attend certain events and just want to feel spicy. The Rough & Tough photoshoot in this issue is dear to my heart. It shows that you can still feel powerful and even pretty when you are facing some of the biggest struggles of your life. It takes courage to step up and change to be a better person. It takes courage to try new things, not listening to anyone saying you can't do it. It takes courage and strength to put on your boots everyday when facing demons. I am here to tell you that you can do it. You can do anything you set your mind out to do. Why not do it with some bling at the same time. Life is all about the ups and downs. There is no such thing as a perfect life. If there was, we wouldn't need our work boots to get out their and change the world.
God Bless You Kymberly Soule’
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

About Joyce Penas Pilarsky... Joyce Peñas Pilarsky, A Filipino couture designer based in Germany, Classis Mrs. Asia International 2014, Benevolence Awardee 2014, Ms. MWI International Ambassador 2013. She’s a multi-talented artist, known for her paintings, ceramics, hosting. She recently released her first album, book author, model, beauty queen, jewelry and fashion designer and philanthropist. Through her own experience in her homeland, Joyce has always understood that not everyone grows up in the same conditions. As a child she had already witnessed a great deal of poverty, and had always wished to be in the position to be able to make a significant difference. Her parents, particularly her lawyer father who had had similar experiences, taught Jocelyn from a young age that the basic premise of sharing is critical to a good and just world. As an English teacher, the education and nurturing of children is a subject that lies particularly close to Jocelyn's heart. Due to her background and the contacts she made, together with her frequent visits to the Philippines, Jocelyn has learned how donations can be best put to use.
Some of the significant projects: Gintong Palad Foundation – supports the promotion of education, the provision of school food, shool books and basic medical supplies. Works of Mercy – supports the street children in Manila by providing them with food, basic education, essential medicines, clothes and toys. St. Martin - Here, children who have been mistreated or abandoned by their parents are "gathered up" off the street by Father Boyet. These children sleep partially cramped together in old buses. In order to improve these circumstances, we are supporting this project with the hope of building a "Children's Home", so that the children can grow up in more dignified surroundings. Floating school– this is for the Manobo children (tribe) in Agusan del Sur Her foundation helped to build the classrooms in Bohol and also supports the victims of the super typhoon “Haiyan” and earthquake also in Bohol.
Fashion... She is making a new trend in Couture and fashion accessories by creating daring jewelries and cocktail dresses and gowns that is truly special and has a unique style. She describes he collections as sexy and daring but sophisticated that will makes her clients happy, proud and confident. She aims also to promote Filipino fabrics and other Filipino indigenous materials from different regions in the Philippines (like pineapple, abacca, pearls, natural stones and other Filipino materials) at the same time will provide more jobs for creative women. Joyce believes that every woman deserves to feel beautiful and stunning; wearing her creations makes a woman more confident, fabulous and a head turner.
Collections... Joyce Penas Pilarsky unveiled her latest summer collections together with other designers from different parts of the world at the first ever Angelman Syndrome Collections Showcase last April 25, 2015 at the Studio Arte, 265 West 37th Street, New York, NY 10018. The Collections Showcase provided a launching pad for up and coming emerging designers. The aim is to exhibit to a vibrant audience of consumers, fashionista’s and the press. Angelman Syndrome is an extremely rare condition that is characterized by laughter, energetic movement, hugs and a mutual fascination of all things shiny – including water. Those with Angelman Syndrome will typically have profound special needs, some physical disability, a significant lack of verbal skills, sleep disturbance and epilepsy as well as other possible complications. Angelman Syndrome does not reduce normal life expectancy but those with the condition will always need round-the-clock care. “The event was very important for me, especially for giving importance and awareness for this kind of genetic disorder. I am very happy to be part of this event and I hope everyone would continue to support.” says Joyce. The Exalted Soul
Life of a Realtor In the day-to-day trudge, as a Realtor I get caught up in the hustle of networking, marketing myself and the never ending pile of paperwork. It can become pretty exhausting sometimes, as the drive to make the next commission is stressful. Don’t get me wrong, I get to see excitement at the closing table as someone buys their first house or even sells one to be freed from the financial responsibility of owning it. The best feeling I ever got from helping a couple sell a property, takes me back to several years ago. This older couple owned 60 acres of land, it had been on the market for a couple of years with another company and when the listing expired, they listed it with me. I also had it listed for a while, and we had lowered the price twice to make it more appealing. Needless to say, this wooded acreage in a bad neighborhood in South Mobile County, didn’t appear to be sellable. Then one day, I was talking to my sellers and they told me that they were filing bankruptcy. Plus, they both had illnesses and were unable to buy the medicine they needed. They needed between $200-$300 a month to afford the medication. My heart broke for them. I started including them in my daily prayer. I knew My God can make a way when there doesn't seem to be a way. Every time they would cross my mind, I would pray that this property would sell. Within about 2-3 months, I got the phone call. Another agent said she had a buyer for all 60 acres if they would consider owner financing. They were happy to do it. The large down payment got them cleared from the bankruptcy court and pay off their car. Then, the monthly payments to follow would be more than enough for them to afford their medicines. In my book of life, this has been included as one of the best days of my life. This transaction was WAY more than a sale of property. It changed people’s lives in a way that only God can. I get giddy when I realize God has let me have a glimpse of His works of faithfulness. Although we don’t always know everyone’s story, everyone has one and God is writing it. God is the great Author! I can't wait to see what's on my next page. Shelli Bell Roberts Brothers

Each year, in communities across the country, passionate candidates engage in an exciting competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) "Man & Woman of the Year" titles by raising funds for LLS blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar counts as one vote and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of ten weeks. The top local fundraisers in the country win the national titles. To date, these dedicated leaders have helped LLS invest more than $1 billion in research to advance breakthrough therapies that are saving lives today and helping us all achieve the LLS goal of a world without blood cancers. The funds raised through Man & Woman of the Year are used in many ways: The continuing research and development of breakthrough therapies. Free blood cancer information, education and support. To support patients in their communities through our 61 chapters across the U.S. and Canada. To drive policies that accelerate the development and approval of new treatments. To advocate for blood cancer survivors and their families, helping patients navigate their cancer treatments and ensuring that they have access to quality, affordable and coordinated care. 2015 Man of the Year Patrick Byrne Hargrove Engineers + Constructors Men of the Year Candidates Bryan Comer Tobias, McCormick & Comer Bill Daniels Burr Forman, LLP

LLS Woman of the....
Earlier this year when I was asked to run for LLS Woman of the Year, my immediate response was, “Sure, I’ll run.” People who know me well already know how near and dear cancer is to my heart. Having family members and friends battle this terrible disease really made the decision for me to run a no-brainer. In years past, I have been to events to support other LLS candidates running, and our dear family friend Starla Chapman was LLS Girl of the Year in 2012. All of this said, I really had no clue what I was getting myself into…I only knew I wanted to help. Shortly after making my decision to run for Woman of the Year, I met with the people of LLS, and was given loads of information on the campaign process. The campaign is 10 weeks long, and each candidate uses this 10 weeks to raise as much money as they possibly can for LLS. Every Man and Woman candidate entered comes in with the expectation of a $10,000 goal, but sets their own personal goal from there. Anything raised during the campaign is kept completely secret so that no other candidate is aware of where another stands in the process. At the end of the campaign a Grand Finale is held to announce the winners in front of family, friends, and supporters. After setting my personal goal at 60K, I later heard that highest ever raised by a Woman of the Year candidate was around 39K, and that men were into the 50K range. I won’t lie, I was a little scared at first, but decided to leave it as is and work to reach that goal. I am very blessed to have lifetime friends and family who support me, so the first thing I did on my quest to reach my goal was enlist some of these wonderful people, and form Team McCarron. At the beginning of the campaign I was introduced to this year’s Boy and Girl of the Year – Jon Bryant Orso and Sydney Upchurch. I already knew of the Boy of the Year from Facebook and was praying for him, but I have to say the best part of this experience was getting to know these two wonderful children and their families. If ever a time came throughout this process that I became tired or stressed with the demands of life or work I thought of these two precious children and was quickly reminded to suck it up. Team McCarron planned several events and my desire at each event was not only to raise money, of course, but to spread awareness. So at each event the parents of our Boy and Girl of the Year would share a little of their story with those in attendance. Collectively as a group, we the candidates of 2015 wanted to raise more than the 2014 group did, which was a record high of $215000.00 for our area. We all really focused our efforts towards this goal and in the end not only did we beat the past amount, but blew it away by raising 50K more for a total of $265,000.00. All in all I think our little team of misfits (that’s what we nicknamed ourselves - LOL) did an unbelievable job. Not only did I meet my very aggressive goal to raise 60K but I surpassed it…Team McCarron raised over 71K alone. I really loved getting to know the other candidates and showed my support for a few of them by attending some of their events. Even though it’s a friendly competition, in the end we are still all on the same team, and that’s Team LLS. I loved being a part of Team LLS 2015 because they truly are a great group of individuals. Anyone can see a cause and want to join it…want to believe in it, but when you hear the stories first hand of how cancer forever changed the lives of a family… you truly understand how important your support is…and how each donation does make a difference. This process is something that has forever changed me. I am truly honored that I was asked to run and feel very humbled, and thankful for all of the love and support that was shown by so many to myself and our team. Although the campaign is over I won’t stop raising awareness and money to ensure we find a cure for all cancers. Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed, and every 10 minutes someone losses their battle to cancer, so we can’t stop until the “someday” for a cure is TODAY… Special Thanks to my amazing team and supporters… Thank you to Debbie and Tommy Hartley and Ray Weinshenker who served as captains for me. My cousin Mindy Downey who joined in to help along with wonderful dear friends – Gwen Ledger, Kathy Bush Smith, Elizabeth Ripp, Kirsten Marks, Leah Jarrell, Jay Simpson, TJ Hodges, Megan Price, Johanna Farmer, Shelby Mitchell, Craig Savage and of course my children – AJ and Kat McCarron and Corey McCarron. I also was blessed to have members of the Order of Venus Mardi Gras Organization come to all my events and help me by volunteering or doing whatever was needed. They really supported me in this and for that I am so thankful.
“We held a Champagne and dessert benefit at the home of my friends, Dr. and Leah Brown, which really was a good time for all.
“We had a concert event with bouncy things for kids and made a day of swimming & sharing. At the end of the evening a video played with pictures of those we know battling these diseases and primarily our Boy and Girl of the Year – JB and Sydney. It was very emotional and moving.”
“We had a fun time in the rain at a golf tournament. My two boys were in town and AJ’s Bengal teammate and former Bama Great – Wallace Gilberry came to show support. Everyone had a fun day!”
“We did a 5K drawdown, yard sale and enjoyed a day at Hungry Owl, where they were kind enough to donate proceeds from the day to our campaign.

11 Ways to Make Yourself Happy Every Day
Photographer: Jozef Zidarov Retoucher: Andre Askew www.facebook.com/AskewPhotography
Here are 11 acts of kindness happy people perform for themselves--and so should you: 1. Commit to doing one nice thing for yourself every day.
Take a 31-day pledge to do your best to do something loving for yourself, however big or small. Making the commitment means you'll remind yourself on a daily basis to treat yourself with loving kindness. Keeping that commitment will bring real benefits, It motivates you to take better care of yourself, go after your dreams, and not let people treat you poorly.
2. Listen to yourself.
That is, listen to how you talk to yourself, and the internal tone of voice you use. We often criticize ourselves in our own heads and that brings down our confidence. When you love yourself, you know you're good enough that you have to stop talking to yourself in negative terms.
3. Forgive yourself.
Forgiveness is a big part of it. It's hard, because most of us have been getting angry at ourselves for all the things we do wrong all our lives. People get into trouble because they try so hard to be perfect and then they beat themselves up when they're not. Loving yourself means accepting that you're stuck inside your own imperfect skin. Start this exercise to help forgive yourself: Look in the mirror and say, 'I love you and I forgive you.
4. Accept yourself as you are right now.
For starters, that means accepting the body that you have today. Body image is a big stumbling block, and so is age. When you love yourself, you try to be the best person you can be in the body that you have, and that's as much as you can do. Self-acceptance also means accepting your income and success level as they are. It's OK not to be making a certain amount by the time you get to a certain age. Entrepreneurs get a lot of criticism when people say, 'Why are you wasting your time doing that?' or 'You're not successful enough!'" Instead, ask yourself a simple question: "Am I happy with what I'm doing?"
5. Eliminate toxic people in your life and workplace.
This may be easier said than done, but avoid tying yourself to clients, business partners, investors, or employees who make you unhappy. It's obviously harder to take the same approach with family members, but there's no reason to put up with people saying or doing things that are unkind. If people say mean things to you, let them know if they talk to you like that you are going to walk away or hang up the phone.
6. Prioritize your health.
Taking supplements and vitamins, exercise and cutting out sugar are acts of self-love. But be careful--don't let caring for your health turn into a reason to beat yourself up if you slip. If you want a Twinkie or cupcake, don’t be mad at yourself for eating it.
7. Stop skipping meals.
People say, 'I've been so busy I had no time to eat today.” That's a very unloving thing to do. Grab something, even if it's just a salad. Neuroscience tells us that letting your blood sugar sink sends stress signals to your brain. So if you truly can't stop and grab a meal, make sure you have healthy snacks at your desk.
8. Breathe!
Don't forget that when you're feeling stressed, overworked, or upset, simple breathing exercises can up your happiness quotient dramatically. If you do some deep breathing during the day, you can calm yourself down and not let stress get to you or make you sick.
9. Give yourself a welcoming space.
If you don’t make your bed everyday, you should start. When you walk into my bedroom and your bed is made it will make you happy. Take the same approach with your workspace. Make it as orderly as you can. Neatening up your workspace and getting rid of stuff you don't need will make you feel calmer and more in control. But don't limit yourself to just decluttering. Make sure you have your environment and office space the way you like it and that it's a pleasant place for you to work. Have fresh flowers on your desk. Take it seriously.
10. Get some sunlight.
A lot of people work in dark spaces. That's very unhealthy and unloving. Try to work in a place where you have access to natural light. If that's not possible, invest in full-spectrum light bulbs. Either way, make sure to get outside for a walk as often as you can.
11. Buy premium products for yourself.
Does this sound like you? If you're bringing a bag of coffee to someone else, you pick out a luxury brand in a nice package, but if you're buying it for yourself, you pick the store brand or another inexpensive option. That's fine if you're one of these people to whom all coffees taste alike. But if you prefer the more expensive brand, you should go for it. Very often we spend money on others but we're cheap with ourselves. The better brand is only a few dollars extra, and every time you use it you're reinforcing to yourself that you're worth more.
