GROSORB Baileys Grosorb is an environmentally friendly, organically based, soil wetter—tailor made to overcome hydrophobic conditions common to Australian soils. It enables water to penetrate these soils and assists absorption, movement and retention. Grosorb promotes plant root development by facilitating an even distribution of water to all areas of a plants container. When applied to gardens and turf it eliminates run-off, allowing water to soak through the soil. Grosorb also assists the effective use of fertiliser by channelling the nutrients directly into the plant root zone. This product is safe and easy to apply and comes available in both granulated and liquid form for various application needs. Cost effective, it conserves water and reduces the frequency of irrigation treatments.

HYDROPHOBIC SOILS: The term hydrophobic means resistance to wetting. Soils, particularly sandy soils, become hydrophobic when weak organic acids form during the breakdown of organic matter. These organic acids coat the soils particles and when they dry out leave a water repellant layer of material on top. When hydrophobic soils are watered, the water simply rolls off and is not absorbed.

HOW GROSORB WORKS: Grosorb employs a surfactant ( short for surface active agent ) to overcome this problem. Surfactants are compounds that contain a hydrophilic ( water loving ) and hydrophobic ( water hating ) segment. The hydrophobic end of the molecule binds with the water repellant soil particles. This allows the hydrophilic segment to coat the soil, creating a way for water to wet the surface and be absorbed. Grosorb is a mix of two different types of block polymer surfactants. These are large molecules which work well as soil wetters because they bond strongly with water repellant sand and the water soluble end extends into the aqueous phase to draw water to the soil surface. Laboratory testing has proven that when Grosorb is mixed with dry soil at the recommended rate, moisture retention is improved by up to 28%. We also know from testing that Grosorb is not burning. Liquid Grosorb has been tested at twice the recommended application rates in very hot conditions and observed no burning, while granular Grosorb releases the wetting agent when watered in, ensuring little risk. Grosorb is also biodegradable and non-toxic, its high concentration means that it is fast acting and long lasting. Grosorb is ideal for use in both commercial and domestic situations. Smart Approved Watermark accreditation identifies Grosorb as an innovative, water-wise product and reflects our commitment to responsible natural resource management and best fertiliser practice.

GROSORB IN ACTION: Steve Smees, superintendent of Marri Park Golf course in Kwinana, Western Australia has had great results using Baileys Grosorb.

“I applied the Grosorb granular to my fairways at a rate of 200kg per hectare over 10 hectares. My normal watering run is for 11 hours every 3 days. This has now been reduced to an 8 hour cycle, and could be looking to reduce down to 7 hours. It is quite noticeable exactly where the Grosorb has been applied with the turf being stronger and able to withstand this current hot weather. The saving of water for this 3 hours equates to 260,000 litres of water per cycle.
