Nurse-Driven Research to Improve Health Literacy Deb Lewis, DNP, RN, CNE, Clinical Director PCU/SDU Frick Hospital was selected as a grant recipient by the Eta Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing for the Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob 2022 Quality Award. The funding will be used to support the upcoming research project at Excela Health, titled “Leveraging a Nursing Shared Governance Structure to Measure and Improve Organizational Health Literacy: A Nurse-Led, Interdisciplinary Quality Improvement Project.” The goal of this research is to identify gaps in health literacy and to create additional resources and education for staff and patients. Lewis credits Helen Burns, PhD, RN, FAAN, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer and Lisa Bernardo, Research Consultant for help in submitting her idea for the project to Sigma Theta Tau for consideration. Lewis’ research will be conducted at all three Excela Hospitals along with co-principal investigators, Jessica Love, MSN, RN, CNL (FH), Monica Krinock, BSN, RN (LH) and Karen Scanlan, MSN, RN, CCRN (WH).
