Neurology Opens Office on Frick Campus

Vibrant oranges, reds and yellows are typically the colors of fall in western Pennsylvania. But this year, Excela Health welcomes autumn with an infusion of pink. The entire month of October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the facades of Excela Frick, Excela Latrobe and Excela Westmoreland Hospitals will be awash with a soft pink glow to put this significant health risk in the spotlight. A pink ribbon also will be projected prominently onto the exteriors.
To promote further awareness within the community, various high school and college football teams will don pink ribbons on their helmets. For each ribbon worn, Excela Health will in turn donate a dollar to Westmoreland Walks, Inc., which provides outreach and support to local individuals and families affected by breast cancer. Teams will be recognized for participating on the Excela Health Facebook page the weekend of their “Pink Out”.

While anti-gravity machines may sound like something from a movie, the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill is exactly that – a treadmill that uses anti-gravity technology to help patients restore normal walking and running mechanics while also supporting the healing tissue. It can be used to assist in recovery from fractures, stress fractures, knee or hip surgery or replacement, as well as for weight loss.
In the AlterG system, users gently “unweight” themselves with positive air pressure, reducing gravitational forces on the body and allowing for a greater level of comfort and mobility. This NASA-based technology can take patients to as low as 20% of their body weight and can be used for patients across a broad spectrum of injuries and at different fitness levels.
Excela Health currently has AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmills in Outpatient Rehabilitation at Excela Square at Latrobe and Excela Square at Norwin.

By mid-November, patients in Frick, Latrobe and Westmoreland hospitals will be able to download the GetWell Anywhere app directly to their phone or device. This app will connect with the patient’s medical information, allow flow of patient information, and will enable patients to stay educated and engaged throughout their stay, with a device that they are comfortable using.
*Select floors will not have access to this technology, based on patient care guidelines.
Staff will benefit from this technology in several ways:
1. Connecting patients to the education they need, when they need it will allow them to become more engaged in their care, helping to create a positive patient experience.
2. Time-saving benefits of technology allow staff to assign educational videos to the patient, which may be watched as many times as needed without the need for a staff member to be present.
3. Patients will be able place service requests through the app, allowing them to request room repairs, dietary concerns, etc. and allowing our clinical team to focus on clinical care while these requests are routed to the proper teams.
More information will be available in the upcoming weeks as we prepare to bring this convenient technology to our patients and our staff.
