Excela Health Accolades For Patient Safety Continue Excela Health continues to be recognized for exceptional patient care, with Excela Westmoreland Hospital and Excela Frick Hospital each receiving an “A” in The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2021 Hospital Safety Grades. The A designation marks the third consecutive grading period for Westmoreland Hospital. Excela Latrobe Hospital maintained its “B” for this evaluation period. Excela Frick Hospital was previously not rated, but there was sufficient data for the grading period for Frick to be included in the evaluation. “Patient safety and quality care go hand in hand and both require vigilance across multiple disciplines 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” noted John Sphon, Excela Health Chief Executive Officer. “To do so requires a strong healthcare team dedicated to infection reduction and preventable harm. This is an expectation of everyone in our organization and we continually focus on it for the greater good and well-being of our co-workers, our patients and their families,” Sphon added. Read More

Excela Health Corporate Store Update We have had many inquiries from Excela staff regarding the opening of the Excela Health Corporate Store. While the holiday season is a perfect time to open the store and allow employees to purchase gifts, we are unable to at this time for one main reason. Nationwide, there is a limited supply of product inventory which includes apparel selection. Our vendors have expressed caution to us regarding the promotion of our corporate store offerings due to this nationwide shortage and limited sizes. We plan to re-evaluate opening of the corporate store in early 2022. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

How To Stay Healthy Over The Thanksgiving Holiday Food and family are the focus of the upcoming holidays. Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the season where eating takes center stage to all of the festivities. While it’s also the season of indulgence, it can be easy to plan a holiday meal that’s delicious and healthful with some help. The typical Thanksgiving meal includes several “superfoods”… turkey breast (low in fat, high in protein and B vitamins), sweet potatoes and pumpkin (high in vitamins A and C and a good source of fiber), Brussel sprouts (high in vitamin K and cancer fighting compounds), and cranberries (rich in Vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants). For many of us, this holiday is a favorite because of all the delicious foods! The healthy part of the holiday meal comes in when the food is prepared with minimal added fat, sugar, and salt, portions are kept in control and sweets are enjoyed in moderation. Click here to read tips to ensure your Thanksgiving holiday is healthy.

Great American Smokeout The Great American Smokeout® is on November 18, 2021. This day is used to bring awareness to the dangers of smoking and encouraging individuals to quit. About 34 million American adults still smoke cigarettes, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. November 19, 2021, marks the one year anniversary of Excela Health becoming smoke free. The strengthened tobacco free policy prohibited the use of tobacco and tobacco smoking alternatives such as e-cigarettes or vaping by Excela Health employees during the employees’ shift or work hours. The Excela Health Advanced Lung Center offers smoking a cessation program for those looking for assistance to quit.
