Excela Health Employees Raise $80,000 for Westmoreland County Food Bank Due to the pandemic many in our community have had to turn to the Westmoreland County Food Bank. Excela Health has recognized this and was able to collect over $80,000 from our generous Excela Health family! “It was unbelievable,” said John Sphon, CEO of Excela Health. “We were overwhelmed by online donations from our employees across the board, across the entire organization, so it was as easy as that.” Click here to read the full article

Mental Health Services Changing to Meet Patient Needs Social distancing and the anxiety over the coronavirus have caused an increase in people opting-out of scheduled appointments. Over the course of the pandemic fewer and fewer patients are seeking help at the Behavioral Health crisis center and the emergency room. However, the Excela Health Behavioral Health Services team continues to provide services – now with virtual options. Behavioral Health director George Mizikar says, “We are developing virtual programming for our members and we continue to provide psychiatric rehabilitation services using virtual face-to-face platforms for group therapy and psychoeducational groups.” Medical management and therapy continue through both tele-therapy and face-to-face if necessary, and the partial hospitalization program remains open with a move towards virtual groups. The majority of insurance companies are now allowing their members to receive treatment in this fashion.

Employee Engagement How the Census Benefits the Excela Health Community

Federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities are based on population totals and breakdowns by sex, age, race and other factors. Your community benefits the most when the census counts everyone. When you respond to the census, you help your community gets its fair share of the more than $675 billion per year in federal funds spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs. Businesses use census data to decide where to build factories, offices and stores, and this creates jobs. Developers use the census to build new homes and revitalize old neighborhoods. Local governments use the census for public safety and emergency preparedness. Residents use the census to support community initiatives involving legislation, quality-of-life and consumer advocacy.

Nightingale Awards In honor of Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday, the World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife.” What better reason to celebrate our own excellent nurses! Each month will have a theme and we will recognize an individual nurse or group of nurses who embody Flo’s example of excellence in nursing care through their contribution in addressing the strategic priorities of Excela Health. Anyone may nominate a nurse or nursing team for one of the awards! For more details and to learn how to nominate click here.

Kudos & Recognition Thank You Westmoreland Hospital “Spent two nights in the Westmoreland Hospital after a minor health scare. I hear nothing but negative things about that hospital, but I interacted with only fantastic doctors and nurses during the 48 hours I was there.”
