Volume 3 Issue 16 Prepare to go Smoke Free During Work Hours The strengthened smoke free policy goes into effect in only four short months on November 19. Once effective, tobacco use and tobacco smoking alternatives such as e-cigarettes or vaping by Excela Health employees will be strictly prohibited during the employees’ shift or work hours. Employees who use these products can begin to prepare now with the help of the Excela Health Well-Being Center. A smoking cessation program is available and an individualized plan can be created for employees who express interest in attempting to quit smoking or using tobacco products and nicotine related products. The Well-Being Center can be reached at 724-830-8568 or ewellness@excelahealth.org. Questions about the smoke free policy can be submitted here. Questions along with answers will be included in Insight and on Featured News.

Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Certification Blairsville Family Medicine, Excela Square Frick Family Medicine, Excela Square Latrobe Family Medicine and Saltsburg Family Medicine have successfully met all requirements for recertification of Patient-Centered Medical Home as set by The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) . A patient-centered medical home is a model of care that puts patients at the forefront of care. PCMHs build better relationships between patients and their clinical care teams. Research shows that PCMHs improve quality and the patient experience, and increase staff satisfaction—while reducing health care costs. Practices that earn recognition have made a commitment to continuous quality improvement and a patient-centered approach to care.

Andrew D. Bagby Family Medicine Scholarship

An aspiring family physician, Barak Marshall, is the recipient of this year’s Andrew D. Bagby Family Medicine Scholarship in which he will gain experience through the Excela Health Latrobe Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. The Bagby Scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of first-year resident Dr. Andrew Bagby, who died tragically in November 2001. It is supported by the Bagby family, as well as private donors, to give opportunities to aspiring family medicine physicians. Marshall, 24, completed his undergraduate studies at the Pennsylvania State University and will be entering his second year of medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) this fall. He felt a calling to family medicine as a result of his experiences with EMS crews in State College, Greensburg and Latrobe where he worked as a certified EMT for nearly four years. “What an honor it is to be the one responsible for another person’s health, even if it’s for a short while.”
