The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) once again has granted Three-Year Accreditation to the Cancer Program at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital.

To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet or exceed 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

Creating a Strong Brand

Excela Health offers cancer services as a joint venture with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, through the Arnold Palmer Pavilion’s medical and radiation oncology program which began more than 20 years ago. Excela Latrobe Hospital is the site of various cancer testing and treatment modalities, and the home to Excela’s Surgical Institute where cancer is a key focus for the Excela surgeons.

Heading the Surgical Institute is Excela thoracic surgeon Michael Szwerc, MD, FACS, Excela’s physician liaison to the accreditation program.

Excela Health Latrobe Hospital Family Medicine Residency Seven physicians recently completed the three-year Family Medicine Residency Program at Excela Health. Pictured at graduation with program director Mike Semelka, DO (center) are Alaina McClarren, DO; Jessica Witte, MD; Matthew Witte, MD; Tyler Watson, DO; Kathryn Rickard, DO; and Evelyn Jung, DO. Dr. McClarren and Dr. Jung will be remaining with Excela Health, with Dr. McClarren joining Derry Family Medicine in September and Dr. Jung becoming part of the Excela Hospitalists serving Latrobe Hospital. The Wittes are headed for New York State, where Dr. Jessica Witte will join a group practice in Olean while Dr. Matthew Witte has been accepted into a sports medicine fellowship program at the University of Buffalo. Dr. Watson is also headed to fellowship training in sports medicine at Auburn University in Alabama, while Dr. Rickard will become part of the primary care team of Unity Health Network in Ohio. Dr. Aucoin is also joining a hospitalist group at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

School-Based Behavioral Health Program Excela Health Behavioral Health operates outpatient therapy clinics in several school districts in Westmoreland County. Mental health professionals provide services year-round to students and their families including individual, group and family therapy.

Services are available for children in these districts K-12 and are provided in the school setting.

Creating a Strong Brand As humans, we tend to crave consistency in most, if not all aspects of our daily life. As marketers, we use this desire for consistency to create a brand. Branding a healthcare organization can include patient experiences, organizational values and the visual brand components that make the brand stand out (logo, colors, language). Consistency in branding contributes to brand recognition and can create trust and loyalty between the brand and its consumers. This is why it is important to work with the marketing team at Excela Health when starting a new project that may include fliers, video, photography and more. The marketing department protects the brand, and makes sure we are delivering a consistent message to our patients, community members and staff.

5 key elements of a strong, consistent brand: Mission Statement | Logo | Brand Color Palette | Brand Guidelines | Repetition Over the next few months, we will review each of these elements and explain their importance to Excela Health, beginning with a mission statement. A brand mission statement communicates the purpose, objectives and how it plans to serve its audience. The mission statement for Excela Health is “To improve the health and well-being of every life we touch.” This statement can be found on marketing materials, the website and other places.

For those exposed to these brand elements day after day, remember this tip: if it’s boring to you, you’re doing it right! Working daily with the brand can cause visual fatigue when using the same visual elements, layouts, and color scheme. However, these same elements provide a consistent, positive feel that lets you know immediately – this is an Excela Health product.

Music Therapy Group Exercise Excela Health has recently been awarded a grant by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) to conduct a Music Therapy program for employees.

Music therapy is an evidence-based treatment that can address a variety of healthcare and educational goals. Music therapy may be beneficial to many individuals. It can help with memory, lower blood pressure, improve coping, reduce stress, boost self-esteem and more.

Employees do not have to stay during the entire hour. Virtual sessions will also be available. To learn more about virutal sessions and view videos please visit the Excela Health Well-Being Center Intranet page. Employees who attend online or in-person will be entered to win a Giant Eagle gift card.
