Fred Rogers taught children (and adults) how to handle life … and death … as part of his television programming. Excela Health Home Care & Hospice in collaboration with the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media and Seton Hill University is addressing grief in our Neighborhood using the teachings of Mister Rogers as a guide. A conference held May 23 at the Rogers Center serendipitously coincided with Gov. Wolf’s designation of the date as 143 Day in tribute to Pennsylvania’s kindest native son. This fall, Excela Health Hospice will begin offering Neighborhood Kids, a series of grief groups for children, which will include art therapy and pet therapy and be held in the Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services outpatient area at Excela Latrobe Hospital.

Latrobe Area Hospital Aid Society Scholarship Recipient Latrobe Area Hospital Aid Society presented this year's first place scholarship of $2,500 to junior volunteer Karsyn Vallorani, daughter of Jimmy and Becca Vallorani of Latrobe. Karsyn sings in the Greater Latrobe High School Choir, has sung the National Anthem at GLHS athletic events, and was a high school cheerleader. In addition, she coached youth cheerleaders, volunteered as a 6th Grade Camp counselor and at the West Point Baseball Field in the concession stand. During her time as a junior volunteer at Excela Latrobe Hospital, Karsyn worked 299 hours in several areas. It was this experience that helped her make career plans. Karsyn will attend WCCC to earn her associate's degree as a radiology technician and hopes to then work for Excela Health. She plans to work while earning her bachelor's degree in radiology.
