TWELVE “DON’TS” TO OBSERVE TO KEEP DISEASE AWAY

A Century Apart, Health Crisis Eerily Similar For Our Community A little more than a century after a global influenza epidemic cut a deadly path across Western Pennsylvania, the headlines are nearly identical – school, church and business closings, social distancing and universal disruption of the routine. Then, as now, our community hospitals based in Greensburg, Latrobe and Mount Pleasant were on the front lines frantically fighting a relentless battle in late 1918 and early 1919. Healthcare workers were the backbone of the county response in those hospitals each just a few years old having been founded by community leaders with a shared vision of community need. Thanks to advances in the understanding of medicine and disease transmission, those same hospitals – modernized by community support throughout the past 100 years – were equipped with the latest advances in facilities, equipment and technology to meet the current health crisis.

A Timely Gift To Pandemic Response The Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation’s $200,000 emergency grant helped to secure personal protective equipment and expand capabilities to provide appropriate isolation for those patients who require negative air pressure rooms for safe treatment. Donor recognition begins on Page 2.

With deepest gratitude … It is with profound appreciation that we share this special newsletter with you in recognition of the overwhelming community support given to our respective foundations on behalf of Excela Health during the COVID-19 public health crisis. While Westmoreland County has not been impacted as deeply by this novel coronavirus as other areas of the country and the globe, preparations for the unknown were tantamount to success. Donations of cleaning and disinfectant supplies as well as personal protective equipment including masks of various types and face shields helped to support Excela staff at its Frye Farm Road testing site. By directing all non-hospitalized patients to a single location, the health system minimized the contact risk.

The Latrobe Area Hospital Aid Society and the Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary spearheaded the collection of 100 video baby monitors to aid in interacting with COVID-19 patients in isolation during their hospital stay. While the monitors were unavailable for purchase from any source, these resourceful volunteers rallied their membership as well as friends and neighbors to donate monitors that were no longer needed in the home setting. The need was met in record time.

Excela Foundations Lead The Way Prior to the community appeal, Excela Health's foundations -- Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation and Westmoreland/Frick Hospital Foundation -- each provided $150,000 to the health system to aid in securing the necessary supplies for protecting frontline staff and caring for COVID-19 patients. Given the many unknowns in the early days of this public health crisis, the foundations acted quickly to ensure Excela Health had funds on hand for whatever would be needed. The foundations then turned to the community for support, identifying specific needs and encouraging donations to the Pandemic Response Fund.

Mellon Foundation Another Faithful Partner Since 1947, the Richard King Mellon Foundation has invested in southwestern Pennsylvania, helping to preserve and protect the resources that maintain the vitality of the region. Among them are organizations such as Excela Health, which provides for community health and well-being. The foundation's response to COVID-19 was no less robust, nor its continued generosity to Excela Health. Excela Health received a $250,000 grant from the foundation's COVID Emergency Operatiing Support Fund. The gift is helping to offset health system crisis-driven needs and costs that are not not being addressed by either federal or state stimulus. A second prong of the RK Mellon Foundation's COVID response is funding healthcare innovations and technology initiatives. One of those grants funded reusable, emergency use face shields made out of retrofitted full-face snorkel masks. Excela was among the organizations receiving samples of these masks to trial. The masks are not yet cleared by the FDA for medical purposes.

NOT TODAY, COVID | A Trio of Successes There were tears and cheers as families separated from loved ones who contracted COVID-19 were reunited after weeks of isolation. Although Westmoreland County has not experienced the widespread devastation - attributable in large part to the effectiveness of the state mandated stay-at-home orders as well as Excela Health’s preparedness to provide care - the unknowns related to COVID-19 exacted an emotional toll on frontline workers and the community alike. James Toth of Everson and Yvonne Demagall of Mount Pleasant were discharged from Excela Frick Hospital April 22. At ages 89 and 92, respectively, each has also survived a battle with cancer and by all accounts their personal fortitude contributed to a healthy return from the brink this time, too. May 13, the scene was nearly identical at Excela Latrobe Hospital, as 62-year-old Mark Nicholas of North Huntingdon was wheeled through the line of hospital cheerleaders. Nicholas was one of the first Westmoreland County residents to test positive for COVID-19 on March 20, Eight days later he was admitted to Excela Westmoreland Hospital with pneumonia. His condition deteriorated and by March 31, Nicholas needed a ventilator to breathe. Once his condition improved, Nicholas was transferred to Select Specialty Hospital inside Excela Latrobe for several days before being well enough to move to Excela’s EPIC Rehab on the first floor to build strength prior to his discharge. All three patients are continuing their recovery at home surrounded by loved ones after weeks of physical separation because of pandemic-related visitor restrictions. Chats by phone and FaceTime facilitated by Excela Health caregivers helped keep families informed throughout the ordeal, and offered some solace when the situations seemed dire. Similar support has been provided to every Excela patient who has tested positive for COVID-19. Regular check-in calls with all those recovering assure that needs are being met. This has led to an increased demand for the services of Excela Health’s Home Care & Hospice team. And as we move forward, Excela Health will have a greater role in supporting our community’s long-term care facilities.

When Fund-Raising Was All She Could Do … Karyl Nicholas felt helpless when her husband Mark was hospitalized for COVID-19, in isolation and fighting for his life. So she did the only thing she could – she turned her attention to the needs of frontline workers, like those caring for the love of her life, and started a GoFundMe online donation page on behalf of Excela Health’s Pandemic Response Fund. At the time of Mark Nicholas’s discharge, her efforts had raised in excess of $11,000. “We are all susceptible to this virus,” she said. “When I couldn’t do anything for Mark, I could express my thanks and support for those taking care of him.”
