Keeping you connected. Expert Care. Here.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Family Additions Maternity Center at Westmoreland Hospital, part of Independence Health System, is featured in “America’s Best Maternity Hospitals” produced by Newsweek, which publishes the honor roll annually.
Independence Westmoreland Hospital is one of 384 hospitals and maternity care centers across the nation, and one of only 22 in Pennsylvania on the 2023 list which was compiled by the news magazine in partnership with Statista, Inc., a world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.
Independence Health System continues to be recognized for exemplary cardiovascular care as a recipient of the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain - MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2023. This is the seventh time the health system’s Butler Memorial Hospital has been recognized for this prestigious award over the past eight years. Butler Memorial Hospital is one of only 262 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.
The award recognizes Independence Health System and Butler Memorial Hospital for the commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that the hospital has reached an aggressive goal as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.
Recognition is based on sustained adherence to specific performance measures over a 24-month lookback period. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.
Butler Sam's club provided the Butler Food Institute with a $1,000 corporate giving grant. We were able to purchase utensils and supplies to help our community sustain a healthy lifestyle after participation in the Food Institute program.
The Food Institute specializes in healthy eating for the whole family, meal planning and preparing healthy recipes on a budget. Each month, program participants attend an appointment where education, ingredients, and cooking instructions for ten meals will be provided. For more information, click here.

“Being at five different hospitals I have never had a showing of support like the people of Butler Memorial Hospital during my CABG surgery with Dr. Lomago. A doctor from Independence Health System is among this year’s Top Physicians under 40 chosen by the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED).
Dillon Stein, DO, FAAHPM, Director of Palliative Care at Independence Health System’s Butler Memorial Hospital, is one of the early-career physicians demonstrating excellence in their field to be selected for the honor in 2023.
“We had a lot of great nominations, but these candidates stood out among the rest,” said Kristen Sandel, MD, PAMED president-elect and chair of the awards committee. “With their ambition and innovative ideas, they will shape and shine bright in the future of medicine.
To be eligible for consideration, physicians must be PAMED members under the age of 40. All nominees are selected by their colleagues and peers within PAMED, a physician-led, member-driven organization representing physicians and medical students throughout the state. PAMED advocates for physicians and their patients, educates physicians through continuing medical education, and provides expert resources and guidance in navigating challenges in today’s ever-evolving healthcare system.
“It is humbling to receive this type of award from your peers,” said Dr. Stein. “I am grateful for the support of Independence Health System, and I am proud to be a part of the care that we provide to our communities.” Dr. Stein joined the health system in 2016 and became Medical Director of the Division of Palliative Care at Independence’s Butler Memorial Hospital in 2021.
Palliative Care takes a team approach when treating patients with serious, chronic, and life-threatening illnesses. Team members not only focus on the physical and emotional needs of their patients, but also the spiritual needs, tailoring care to each individual. A graduate of Alfred University, Dr. Stein earned his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at Western Pennsylvania Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, where his leadership skills resulted in his selection as chief resident. He pursued specialty training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he completed a hospice and palliative medicine fellowship. Most recently, Dr. Stein was one of six physicians nationwide to receive the Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Foundation Award for his work in providing outstanding care to patients nearing end of life.
