Magnet Minute Week of 8/15/22 Structural Empowerment Staffing Support
Staffing is at crisis levels across many industries including food service, retail and even accountants and CPA’s. Healthcare workers are certainly no exception, resulting in many teams working short-handed for extended periods of time with open positions outnumbering applicants. Excela Health Nursing has created several new initiatives geared toward attracting quality staff. One strategy is the NEW Nurse Extern Scholarship Program beginning this fall. The EH Education department worked with local nursing schools to design a program that will best meet student needs, while respecting school schedules. The goal is to offer an opportunity for senior level nursing students to shadow and be trained by an RN while gaining valuable clinical experience and building relationships that hopefully will attract them to work at Excela Health upon graduation.
The program is a 16 week, paid externship with participants working a minimum of 44 hours per month • 32 hours of precepted direct clinical care on a med-surg, telemetry, PCU or step down unit plus • 12 hours consisting of both classroom learning sessions and the opportunity to shadow specialty areas. In addition to the wage earned throughout the program, upon completion, students will receive a scholarship to help fund tuition or other items. Nursing students graduating in December 2022 or May2023 are eligible to apply!
