The pandemic had challenged the Nurse Recognition and Retention committee (NRRC) to plan activities for Nurse Month while adhering to the latest health and safety guidelines. In early winter, the committee started to plan the spring events. Without knowing what the spring would bring, with respect to national guidelines, the committee plunged into developing plans they had hoped to accomplish! The NRRC committee reached out to the Well-Being Center for assistance and after a few conference calls the Twilight Walk started to become a reality. The two entities worked together in dividing up the tasks, dependent upon who could accomplish what and reached out to other departments for help as well. It became apparent that the event could take place and the goal of the event was to have fun! The Twilight Walk took place on Wednesday, May 19 from 5 to 6:30 pm. at Excela Square at Latrobe. Each lap of the walking track is 0.7 of a mile. At the event each person was given three raffle tickets to put into a basket at the completion of a lap. Later the prizes, donated by Marketing, were selected from the basket of tickets. Energizing music was played during the event. Environmental Services (EVS) staff helped with the set-up of the event and the Well-Being Center provided balloons with humorous quotes on each light pole around the track, as well as candy bags for the completion of the walk. A hot day was anticipated, but there was plenty of water to drink, provided by the Nursing department and was set-up by Food and Nutrition Services (FANS). There was not a charge for the walk, but participants were asked to donate to the Friends of Nursing. In addition to other contributions made for the luminarias for the Blessing of the Hands events, all contributions will be passed onto the Friends of Nursing. The Leadership of Excela Health was seen around the track including Home Care & Hospice, nursing administration and more motivating all! The planning committee received positive feedback from all. All who participated said they had fun, the timing was perfect, the track was beautiful! Being able to be home for dinner and still share special “off work” time with colleagues was a positive to many. Watch for another Twilight Walk to be scheduled and be sure to sign up to join the fun!
