I am thrilled to share Kendor Music Publishing’s Jazz Ensemble Music catalog for 2023-24. Long-known for our educationally-focused Jazz Ensemble music, we present 35 new works this year, including 13 from Doug Beach Music. You’ll find music for beginners through high school, college and professional groups.




Welcome Jazz Ensemble Directors MUSIC FOR JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Our charts are grouped into five grade levels: Jazz Quest Series (Grade 1), Jazz Gateway Series Grade (Grade 1½), Jazz Trek Series (Grade 2), Jazz Journey Series (Grade 3), and Jazz Summit Series (Grade 4 and up). So there is something in here for everyone!
I am grateful to work with a group of talented and creative composers who are passionate about Jazz and are just terrific people. And we are honored to continue to distribute Doug Beach Music. Doug is a world-class educator and composer, who always puts together a solid catalog from well-known composers.

Alternating between an easy “two” feel and a shuffle “four” this solid chart just sounds great. Composer Carl Strommen has a knack for making very playable charts sound full and appealing and there is a lot to like in this new selection. (2:32)

Kendor is happy to welcome new composer Andrew Lesick to the catalog. The Gumshoe is a medium bright swing that features a written Piano solo off the top. Everyone gets a turn at the melody as the chart develops and there is some fun interplay between the Saxes and Brass after the solo section. (3:49)

This is a happy-go-lucky medium swing from the pen of composer Greg Yasinitsky that is sure to bring a smile to the face of everyone in the audience. A great melody, fun harmony and engaging rhythms are brought together to make this chart a winner. Guaranteed to brighten any concert program! (4:06)

Duke’s Groove
Based on the chord changes to In a Mellow Tone by Duke Ellington
Peter BlairThe Ellington band was famous for laying down a swinging groove and this new chart based on In a Mellow Tone is a great way to introduce this feel to younger ensembles. Featuring clever interplay between the sections and a terrific Sax soli this solid arrangement is both a good teaching piece and a wonderful concert choice. (3:14)

A Warm Summer’s Night

If you are looking for a fresh sounding Latin-rock chart that features the full ensemble you should certainly check out this new piece from Terry White. After the dynamic introduction Tenor Sax and Trumpet 1 lead the way. Several harmonic, melodic and rhythmic themes are developed as the music unfolds which makes this a compelling choice for concert or festival. (2:41)
Swing It!

The title for this chart comes from the repeated eighthnotes that occur on beat one throughout the piece. A swinging excursion in D minor that your students will have a great time playing. There is a written solo in Trumpet 1 that is cued in Trumpet 2, and an optional improvised solo for Trumpets 3 & 4. An eight measure Alto Sax solo is followed by a rousing shout chorus. (3:19)
Bossa Doce

This delightful, breezy bossa has all the ingredients of a great chart...an engaging melody, a fresh harmonic approach and captivating rhythmic development. Written solos are included for Trumpet 2 and Trombone 1 over easy ii7 - V changes followed by an inventive passage that opens up some new harmonic vistas. (3:36)
This unique set of 17 warm-up pieces for the young Jazz Ensemble covers the essential rhythmic and harmonic elements found in two styles of Jazz: “even eighth note” (such as Latin Rock) and Swing music. After the initial two legato warm-ups, the music is divided into four sections: Even eighth note examples in B flat, Swing examples in B flat, even eighth note examples in F and Swing examples in F. Each exercise builds on the previous example so younger jazz students will be introduced to essential rhythms and phrases in a well-sequenced method. The rhythm section parts are carefully crafted to allow maximum flexibility for each player. All the Warm-ups are designed to work at a variety of tempos and with various dynamic shadings, so each one can be used in a multitude of ways.

Well here’s a blues chart that will surprise you at every turn! Vince has taken the traditional 12 bar blues and turned it sideways in this clever composition. Definitely a hip chart to look at if you need something that colors outside the lines! (3:23)

Kris Berg
Leave it to the creative mind of Kris Berg to come up with a swingin’ jazz piece inspired by the Ferde Grofé composition On the Trail from the Grand Canyon Suite! After a short Alto Sax solo there is a cool unison line for the band with just light accompaniment from the Drums. (3:37)
A Long Way to Go
Ed Gaston
Your band will have a great time digging into this “power rock” chart. Terrific horn licks and killer rhythm section parts add to the impact of this excellent new offering from Ed Gaston. (3:36)
We Three Kings Can Swing

Always a favorite among the jazz crowd the traditional carol We Three Kings gets a modern treatment in this swinging new chart. Fresh harmony and unique rhythmic development combine to make this a sure-fire winner at your holiday concert. (2:44)
Ace of Hearts
Ryan Erik Adamsons
This chart is based on the chord changes to Black Orpheus and features solos for any instrument over the A section of the form along with melodic segments for all sections. It is a great way to introduce Bossa Nova style along with syncopation and playing in a minor key. (3:58)
Power it Up!

Given the widespread popularity and accessibility of Jeff Jarvis’ infectious funk charts for big band, you’ll love this easy original. A solid introduction sets up the tuneful melody. The driving funk groove is coupled with a rich chord progression to give this chart plenty of audience appeal. (4:30)

One of the most famous (and beautiful) beaches anywhere is Varadero in Cuba. Listening to Michele’s new funk tune, it is easy to envision the clear blue water and white sand stretching for miles. (2:43)

This great new shuffle checks all the boxes: driving groove, intense ensemble writing, and vivid dynamic contrasts. Craig skillfully uses tension and release to create several high points throughout the chart and it is all capped off with a superb final 12 bars of ensemble. (3:36)

If you liked Jamie Roth’s blues chart It Is What It Ain’t you will definitely want to check out this latest composition. Brimming with energy this piece will showcase the band’s ability to create dynamic contrasts and play punchy rhythms. It also swings like crazy! (3:29)
Crafted in the style of the legendary chart of Bill Holman’s on Just Friends this new composition from Jack Cooper uses a unison line in the winds over a full chorus of the tune before it breaks into the exciting harmonized section. This chart is a workout for the whole band and will highlight the ensemble’s balance, blend, intonation and time. (3:29)

Your band (and audience) will love this intriguing new chart from Australian composer Cam McAllister. Beautiful and evocative this work, inspired by the music of Africa, moves through several extended passages that weave engaging melodic ideas and captivating harmony over a floating rhythm section feel. Jamie Roth
Get down and get funky! Lots of punchy brass and a hip, modern rhythm section groove are two of the components that make this Funk-rock chart a winner. There is a suggested written solo for Guitar with the chord changes also included in the Alto Sax 1 part. Each section of the band is layered over a drum solo that leads to a dynamite ending.
