Grades 2-2 ½

First Achievement Series (Grade ½)

Houses music for the early beginning musician. Intended for use at the first concert performance.

• Playable by first year students with limited study

Early Achievement Series (Grade 1)

Home to any work in the Wingert-Jones Catalog that falls in the grade level of 1.

• Playable by first-year groups

This dedicated grade level of 1 ½ provides a much-needed bridge between grade 1 and grade 2 literature.

Janelle Zook Cunalata provides us with a charming piece for the youngest of students using only the first 6 notes of the D scale. She pulls from her experience as a music educator to create a piece that will give students a sense of success right from the start! (1:40)

Perilous

Larry Clark

Perilous – full of danger or risk. This describes the type of piece composer Larry Clark has created for the youngest of string players. The piece uses only the first 6 notes of the D major scale but it is aggressive and energetic. Students will enjoy the strength of the piece and the cinematic nature of the music. (2:14)

Composer John Dupuis is new to the WingertJones catalog, giving us an enjoyable work for beginning string orchestra. It is a short three movement suite reminiscent of music from the Renaissance. A strong choice to highlight your group at festival. (2:21)

Jason Taurins

Strong from the start, Dark Matter will engage the students with bold sounding minor music. The piece has the flavor of action movie music but for beginning students. This piece will come together in a hurry, and students will love playing it again and again! (2:05)

Gothic Quest sounds like it’s from another time but powerful! Composer Emily Golan draws from her experience in the classroom to deliver an aggressive composition for younger students that takes them on a musical journey that is first aggressive, but then moves to a more heartfelt lyrical theme before returning to the bold minor themes for an intense conclusion. Nordic Steel

Doug Spata

Popular composer Doug Spata presents us with a solid new piece that will help teachers introduce students to simple cut time and the key of G minor. The rhythmic pulsation is consistent in presentation throughout so the students can focus on more musical matters in this driving composition. (1:30)

Never Summer Mountain

Perry Holbrook

We are pleased to have master educator and composer Perry Holbrook join the Wingert-Jones catalog with a rhythmic composition that students will love. The teaching potential in this piece abounds, but the energetic nature of the music will stimulate the students to practice and enjoy this work over and over again! (2:51)

Chariot Race

Liam Ramsey-White

Liam Ramsey-White is an up and coming composer who is writing fresh music for string orchestra. With Chariot Race he gives the student the opportunity to play dramatic music that is very idiomatic for the instruments because of his knowledge as a string music educator. This piece starts out slow and lush and then leads to a powerful minor thriller to the finish of the race. (2:30)

A clever piece combining the famous Ukrainian Bell Carol with the seminal We Three Kings by arranger Anthony Susi. Anthony infuses some excellent syncopated rhythms into the piece to give it a really nice groove. It is a fresh perspective on two classic holiday songs that students and audiences will love. (2:07)

Resolute is the perfect description for this music by composer Gary Fagan. It has a seriousness yet regal demeanor at the same time. There is a wonderful contrapuntal section that will give students the opportunity to work on their independent musicianship. This one is strong, firm, and bold with sophisticated craftmanship. Katie O’Hara LaBrie

Dynamic Forces launches into thematic material from the start without introduction. This energetic and rhythmic composition is exciting from start to finish and is a perfect example of why composer Katie O’Hara LaBrie is fast becoming so popular. (2:06)

Composer Doug Spata does it again with a tuneful piece reminiscent of western movie soundtracks. It is a jaunty tune which students and audiences will love. Every section of the orchestra gets a chance to shine with melodic material. (1:31)

Music for a Night Sky

Music for a Night Sky is an introspective composition from composer Jorge L. Vargas. The piece has a moderate flowing waltz that begins reflective but then builds in complexity. It escalates to a more joyful climatic sound before retreating for a reflective conclusion. (2:19) POW2304

Falconwing

Christian A. Williams

Take a ride on a Falcon’s wing with this rhythmic, yet soaring, piece. Composer Christian A. Williams takes us on a musical journey with lots of contrasts in this delightful composition. It will be a ride worth taking for your students and audiences alike. (3:09) POW2306

Jalapeño Tango

Christian A. Williams

The Tango is a dance of romance, and Jalapeño Tango contains all of the dramatic flavor of a native Brazilian Tango. There is the push and pull of the tempo, dynamics, and rhythmic variety that bring about the intrigue of the Tango. The piece is perfect to introduce this vital musical form. (2:37) COW2301

Gary Fagan

You’ll hear the emotion in this piece from start to finish. A wonderful opportunity awaits to improve your student’s musicianship with this Gary Fagan piece. It’s lush, pensive, and has a multitude of places for students to push and pull the tempo and phrase for great musical effect. (2:59)

Steve Parsons

Composer Steve Parsons brings us a sentimental composition that will stretch the musicianship of your students. The piece is lush and flowing with beautiful harmonies and countermelodies that move with such intention. A wonderful heartfelt addition to the repertoire. (3:35)

Shudder to Think

Doug Spata

The bows will be shuddering in this piece as the students dig into aggressive sixteenth rhythms in this piece. Composer Doug Spata does it again with a dramatic composition that will get the students excited as his pieces do. We are honored to have Doug’s music in our catalog! (2:00)

This is the gorgeous second movement from Symphony No. 1 by Russian composer Vasily Kalinnikov as arranged for strings by Caryn Wiegand Neidhold. It is a beautiful symphonic movement that stands on its own. It is the epitome of the late 19th century romantic style with its lush harmonic choices and textures. This version is a welcome addition to the string orchestra repertoire. (3:45)

American Patrol

F.W. Meacham

Arranged by Steven L. Rosenhaus

Originally a piano piece by composer F.W. Meacham written in 1885, this piece depicts the approaching, passing, and fading away into the distance of a military unit. While there are many versions of this popular piece, including one by the famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, composer/arranger Steven L. Rosenhaus has skillfully created a toetapping rendition for string orchestra that will impress your audiences. (2:50) SOW2302
