STRATEGY MISSION

The American Cancer Society’s mission is to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. LENGTH of Primary Client Relationships

CLIENTS SERVED

The American Cancer Society serves individuals diagnosed with cancer, their families and caregivers, medical professionals, cancer researchers, and the general public with cancer information, resources, and support.

The PROBLEM

More than 1.7 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer this year. When we started this work more than 100 years ago, a cancer diagnosis amounted to near certain death. Today, two out of three people survive cancer. But there is still much work to be done.

N/A

At the American Cancer Society, we attack cancer from every angle. We promote healthy lifestyles to help prevent cancer, we research cancer and its causes, Your SOLUTION we fight for lifesaving policy changes, and we provide everything from emotional support to the latest cancer information, 24/7. 1-3 year PLAN

By 2020: 1.) To be the nonprofit leader in the fight to save 1,000 lives from cancer per day in the US, by focusing on our biggest opportunities of investing in research; driving up colorectal cancer screening and HPV vaccination; and improving access to care. 2.) To see an annual gain in operational efficiency and an increase in the allocation of more dollars to the mission from 75% to 80%. 3.) To increase overall revenue to $1.1B nationally.

IMPACT Long-term VISION

Save 1,000 lives from cancer per day in the U.S., reduce overall cancer mortality in the U.S. by 40 percent between 2015 and 2035, and advance the World Health Organization goal to achieve a 25% reduction in premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 2025. Thanks in large part to the work of the American Cancer Society, the U.S. cancer death rate has declined by 27 percent from 1991-2016. In that time, we have averted more than 2.6 million cancer deaths through improved treatment and cancer prevention. Last year, we helped nearly 29,000 patients access transportation to medical appointments by providing nearly 480,000 rides, and saved cancer patients and caregivers approximately $59 million in lodging expenses.

Impact STORY

In 2018, we launched Mission: HPV Cancer Free, a public health campaign to eliminate vaccine-preventable HPV cancers, starting with cervical cancer. Our ultimate goal is to have 80% of 13-year-olds in the U.S. fully vaccinated with HPV vaccine by 2026. So far, we have already implemented interventions in more than 700 health systems, raised vaccination rates in more than 300 health centers, and trained 15,000 providers.

Recent Program In 2018, our primary care and state health systems teams were merged, and the senior leadership team was reorganized to create a more nimble and IMPROVEMENT efficient structure as well as a balanced budget.

S.W.O.T. ANALYSIS STRENGTHS

WEAKNESSES

OPPORTUNITIES

THREATS

A 106-year history supports our reputation as a trusted leader. Over $4.8 billion in research funding has built a platform that moves science forward faster. And our work touches every community in the US.

Our widespread infrastructure allows us to work anywhere, but may challenge our focus and prioritization. With vast resources connected through technology, we must work to keep up with change.

Our history and reputation give us the opportunity to partner with organizations across the country to leverage our brand and expertise. We can accelerate the pace of progress by working together.

Cancer care, research, and prevention are changing dramatically at a rapid pace. We are a large historical organization, but must be forward thinking and integrate progress from all sectors.
