Introduction At Age Concern Colchester & North East Essex we change lives. Our main purpose is to improve the Health and Wellbeing of those in later years. We achieve this through befriending, our advice service and our friendship groups. Within what we do we aim to take people from complete loneliness to new friendships and a new life. If you are feeling lonely contact our team and we will work out how we can support you to a new and enriched life through our network and clubs. We have 70 people who receive befriending at home and we are set to see over 10,000 people attending more than 25 clubs in our centre in Colchester. We aim to bring people together to enjoy life in retirement and through shared interests. Since moving into our new home in April 2018 the centre has grown considerably and there is a constant bubble of enjoyment. We have also enjoyed growing our volunteer base by 100 people this year and have volunteers from 16 years old and upwards. What we can do for you... Millions of pounds are missed in unclaimed benefits each year. Our advice workers assist people of pensionable age with claims for benefits and allowances including Attendance Allowance and Personal Independence Payments, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. Working together with the client and family members, we can oversee the entire process from sending for application forms in the first instance to completing them with the client, and going to appeal if necessary. We can visit clients in their own homes and the service is free of charge, confidential and independent.

Advice Service We provide a comprehensive Advice Service to those aged 60 and over. We understand that as people age they may need social and health care to remain independent and in their own homes. Arranging care at home can be a stressful experience for older people and their families. This can happen after a period of hospitalisation or at any time when disabilities dictate that someone needs help to continue to enjoy living in their own home. When that time comes, you need to know who to contact and what your legal rights are, and how to enforce those rights. You also need to know what free services you are entitled to from the NHS such as continuing care, either in or out of hospital. The provision of care, and who pays what charges, is governed by a complex set of laws and regulations. We can assist in these matters as well as with enquiries about residential care and its cost, and we act as your representative with Social Services and/or the NHS, etc, to ensure that you receive the level of care to which you are entitled, either in your own home or a residential setting.

Please ring our office to make an appointment for your Benefits Eligibility Check or for advice regarding any issues you require help with. We are also able to assist those faced with decisions they feel unable to tackle alone or who may need someone to deal with others on their behalf to ensure that their voice is heard or needs are met. We have dedicated staff and volunteers ready to help and support.

Please contact the office for further information.

Information Service We offer a free, confidential and impartial service covering a wide range of local and national information on many matters of interest to older people, booklets and local information about services and agencies. We are happy to give presentations on the services of Age Concern Colchester and North East Essex to local agencies and organisations. (No charge but donations are always gratefully received).

Legal Advice Surgery We offer a thirty-minute free and confidential advice session with a solicitor every other Wednesday between 11am and 12.30pm in our offices at 63 North HIll.

Pension Wise Appointments There is a free appointments service to review your pensions arrangements through Pension Wise who are here on site twice a week.

Health and Wellbeing Our Centre “The Veranda” has over 25 different clubs and activities that are focused on Health in Mind, Health in Body, Emotional Support and Education / Information.

Befriending Service Social isolation is one of the biggest challenges facing our society. Loneliness can affect everyone but older people are particularly vulnerable after the loss of friends and family, reduced mobility or limited income. Being lonely has a significant and lasting negative effect on blood pressure, is associated with depression (either as a cause or as a consequence), and also with higher rates of mortality. Health issues arising from loneliness and isolation add pressure on statutory health and social care services. At Age Concern Colchester and North East Essex we have a superb befriending service to help combat the issues of loneliness which are a growing problem. We almost exclusively deliver befriending in the home as a one-to-one visiting service because we believe in personal contact not telephone befriending. There is no substitute for face-toface company. We also run a ‘circle of friends’ service which consists of groups of three people and a volunteer who are in contact with each other.

Computer Courses Do you want to learn how to use a computer, laptop, tablet, notebook, or learn more about IT or the World Wide Web? Then why not enrol for some of our computer classes with an individual tutor? We can offer three one-hour sessions, on a one-to-one basis, that are tailored to your own requirements. This is a 3-week course which is £5 a session. If you prefer we also run a group tech session which is as much about friendship as it is learning technology.

Winter Warmth Each year Age Concern Colchester runs a Winter Warmth Campaign aimed at helping older people to stay warm and safe through the colder periods. We organise electric blanket testing sessions with a qualified electrician. This is financed by volunteers knitting miniature hats used by Innocent Smoothie on their bottles as a festive promotion. If you enjoy knitting do come and join in with knit and natter.
