Welcome to AGE Concern Eastboune ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The Venton Centre The William & Patricia Venton Centre was donated to AGE Concern Eastbourne and opened in November 2000, and ever since it has been used as a place for older people in Eastbourne to socialise, enjoy lunch, partake in a variety of activities and seek information, advice and guidance. Our activities include line dancing, tai chi, creative writing, art classes, computer lessons, dancersize and more. All designed to promote independence and wellbeing, and to enhance later life. Information and advice on health, welfare benefits, consumer issues and local concerns can be obtained at the Centre. We also offer a number of free services, providing professional legal advice, will-writing (conditions apply) and pension assistance. The Pantry CafĂŠ, our modern coffee shop cafĂŠ is open to anyone of any age, and offers a selection of delicious snacks and sandwiches freshly made on the premises. These are accompanied by a selection of specialty teas, coffees and homemade cakes.

The Venton Centre is located opposite AutoWise car service centre in Junction Road, and can be easily accessed from the Arndale Centre by the exit next to Sainsburys. AGE Concern Eastbourne is THE local independent charity for older people in Eastbourne and surrounding areas. Everything we do is about Eastbourne and the areas around it. Every penny raised locally is spent locally, to provide a fantastic range of activities and services that make such difference to the lives of so many people, and in simply being there when help is needed. With your support we can secure an even brighter future for older people in Eastbourne and nearby areas.

This Guide to Activities & Services shows the variety of support we offer – both free and chargeable services.

Contractor Call Contractor Call provides a free referral service to home owners of all ages in Eastbourne, Pevensey, Hailsham, Polegate, Seaford and Bexhill-on-Sea. We serve to protect local residents from rogue traders by maintaining a register of vetted and approved contractors, to whom we refer work. We do not complete any of the work ourselves. We do not provide regular services such as gardening, window cleaning or domestic housework.

Welfare Support The Welfare Support Department encompasses Welfare Rights, Information and Advice, Outreach and Advocacy. Welfare Rights: We mainly help with form completion for non-means tested benefits (Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Carers Allowance) but will help with any form if WR visitors are available. If WR visitors are not available then the WR department will signpost or refer on to another appropriate organisation.

We have an arrangement with DWP, who provide an Information Point staffed by DWP advisors on a Friday here at the Venton Centre between 9.00 am – 13.00 pm. Appointments for this service have to be made through Reception.

Our visitors can also advise on potential entitlement to other benefits and allowances such as Pension Credit, Council Tax Reduction and Social Fund Payments and can signpost or refer on to other agencies for further assistance. We can help clients in getting their benefit refusal decision reviewed and if necessary can pass on cases to our Advocacy Service who will assist or represent the client at an appeal tribunal. We can signpost clients to CAB for independent benefit checks and refer cases to DWP for specialist help with State Pension and other benefit queries.

Information and Advice: The I & A Team operates an Information Point Monday to Friday 9.30 – 1pm at the Venton Centre. They can assist with a range of queries and concerns including: • • • • •

Welfare benefits Consumer issues Housing & care options Health matters Local concerns

The system that operates here is a type of triage system. Leaflets and quick queries are dealt with at the Reception Desk; more difficult or time consuming questions are taken by the Information & Advice advisers in the morning. The more complicated or involved queries are dealt with by the Head of Department or one of the Co-ordinators. We deal with queries that cannot be resolved in a day but can be resolved without a visit. If we cannot immediately provide an answer we will research the enquiry and get back to the client, as soon as possible. If you require specialist advice we can, with the client’s permission, refer them to a relevant organisation such as Social Services, Trading Standards, Department of Work & Pensions and Citizens Advice Bureau, etc, where they can be appropriately advised. Alternatively, there are various free professional services provided at the Venton Centre available on different days and times of the month, with a booking facility through Reception: Financial Advice, Legal Advice, Will Writing, Pensions and Tax Advice.

Outreach: This service provides information & advice to people out in the community, in the areas surrounding Eastbourne. It is also for people who can’t get in to the Venton Centre or don’t wish to travel in to Eastbourne. Enquiries made by older people or their representatives in person, when attending an Outreach event can sometimes be dealt with straight away or a home visit may be arranged. These sessions usually “piggy-back” on to existing sessions eg lunch clubs or coffee mornings, held by other organisations, thus enabling maximum networking between other voluntary and charitable organisations and spreading the word to as many people as possible. The aim of the Outreach service is to promote the well being of older people in and around Eastbourne, maximise benefit take up and advise on housing and care options. The Co-ordinator takes on specific topic cases referred from the other sections of AGE Concern Eastbourne, including Housing Options and adaptation advice.

This may include making a Will, which will enable them to make choices about what happens to their estate upon their death and helps provide for family and dependents. Many people understandably find it difficult to discuss matters relating to death, money and inheritance, which can be emotive topics. However, having a professionally drafted Will is important, especially with today’s more complicated family arrangements, which may include providing for a new partner whilst protecting assets for the benefit of children from previous relationships. Married and civil partnership couples do not necessarily inherit all their spouse’s assets and “common law” partners are not recognised at all. Failure to make a Will can not only lead to unexpected results, but can cause heartache and unhappiness for those who survive At Hart Reade, our specialist legal advisors are here to listen to what you want to achieve; to understand your unique situation, explain the legal position in plain English and discuss the best way to achieve your wishes. This could be basic and straightforward or include more complex arrangements such as holding assets in trust or discussing tax consequences and efficiency. Our experience confirms that, once you have discussed the distribution of your estate and have received our professional advice to help you accomplish this, there is great reassurance in setting out your wishes plainly within a Will; achieve peace of mind that whatever the seasons might bring your affairs are in order. For more information please contact us at our offices in Eastbourne, Hailsham and Polegate.
