Welcome to Age UK Buckinghamshire and thank you for picking up our Guide to Services

............................................................................................................................

We are a successful independent local charity working for all older people in our county, and effective and accountable in what we do. As an organisation we make a real difference to the lives of older people and are responsive to their needs. We are dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing and empowerment of older people in Buckinghamshire. We believe in older people remaining independently in their own homes safely and with dignity. To support you in doing so, we offer a range of services. This brochure will tell you about the services we currently offer, and how you can get in touch to find out more. We are always researching our local area to determine the need and the resources to implement further valuable services to improve later life. Information & Advice .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

We have a telephone Information & Advice service to provide answers to help older people, their carers and relatives. No matter what the query, if we can’t help you ourselves, we will refer you to someone who can. Our Helpline is open from 9.30am – 12.30pm Monday to Friday.

Welfare Benefits ............................................................................................................................

Are you claiming all your entitlements? We can help you find out. Contact us for a welfare benefit check. We can visit you in your own home to give advice and to fill in complicated benefit application forms on your behalf. Ring to speak to an adviser.

Befriending ............................................................................................................................

At Age UK Bucks we provide a befriending service for those older people who are isolated and lonely. This service is delivered by volunteers who give up at least an hour a week of their time for weekly visits of friendship and support. The aim is to enhance the quality of life and we aim to prevent deterioration in mental health often associated with isolation and loneliness. This is achieved by giving each client undivided attention with particular emphasis on listening skills. Befriending volunteers visit an older person in their own home and enjoy a friendly chat, ideally sharing a mutual interest. We try to match the volunteers to the older person very carefully, so that both parties get the utmost enjoyment from the relationship. We are always looking for volunteers to join our team of over 300 throughout Bucks. Volunteers receive full training before they are matched to an older person. To find out more about our service, or to have a chat about volunteering with us - please contact our Community Services Manager on 01296 431911.

Day Care

............................................................................................................................

............................................................................................................................

This is a means of maintaining contact with a friendly voice once a week when you are feeling alone. Referral to this service is via the befriending co-ordinator once a client has been assessed for our befriending service..

The Day Care Service provides a good day out for older vulnerable people at two small community based centres in Aylesbury Vale. It’s an opportunity to meet and make new friends, enjoy the company of others with a freshly cooked lunch and take part in a variety of activities.

This regular contact is well received with many clients expressing their thanks to our staff, who are able to offer a friendly ear to the day to day worries and problems of older people.

Our day care volunteer team have been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2012. We provide innovative day opportunities for older people with levels of mental health difficulties. This also provides many carers with an invaluable period of regular respite. Regular day opportunities are available in Wing on Thursdays and at Steeple Claydon on Tuesdays. Transport can be arranged. Our aim is to enable older people with memory impairment to improve their quality of life and to help them maintain their independence and continue living in their own homes for as long as possible. We try to cater for all interests at our clubs and offer a range of activities. For more information and to access the service please call us. What a difference a day makes!

Independence at Home .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Handyperson

Gardening

If you have simple DIY jobs around the house that need doing, we are here to help.

If you can no longer cut your own grass or keep your garden tidy, our Garden Maintenance service is ideal for you. Our gardeners can come as often as you need.

............................................................................................................................

There are lots of older people who want to stay in their own home for as long as possible before having to give up their independence and go into care. Over 40% of people going into residential care homes do so because they cannot do simple chores and NOT because of health issues. This is not only a terrible loss to them but also a great cost to the state. By performing a few DIY jobs for someone it helps maintain their independence for as long as possible. Our Painting & Decorating service will give fixed price quotations for larger jobs. The service is not intended to provide complex or skilled labour solutions to problems and does not replace qualified trades people.

............................................................................................................................

Hairdressing ............................................................................................................................

Rather than you have to travel to get your hair done, our mobile hairdressers can cut and prepare your hair for that special event or just simply to keep up your appearance. Therapeutic Care Service ............................................................................................................................

This massage service promotes a sense of well-being and relaxation through gentle massage of head, shoulder, hands and feet. Seamless Relocation ............................................................................................................................

Neat Feet (Toe Nail Cutting) If you struggle to cut your toenails we can refer you to one of our trained footcare agents who will visit you at home to assess your needs and provide a regular cutting service.

If you are thinking of moving, but not sure where to start, you will want to know that help is at hand. This service provides a complete package of supporting care to help older people move home. This can be as much or as little as you want.

............................................................................................................................

Computer Training

Independent Financial Advice

............................................................................................................................

............................................................................................................................

We provide individual tuition for older people in their own homes, tailor-made to your own needs and using your own computer.

We work with trusted independent financial advisers to help you make the most of your money. We also have arrangements with solicitors should you have a legal issue to deal with.

Home Cleaning

............................................................................................................................

If you are finding it difficult to cope with housework, this service will provide cleaners as regularly as you want, and includes laundry and ironing if needed.

To find out more about any of these services please contact Age UK Bucks on 01296 431911.

.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

How you can help us .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Each year Age UK Buckinghamshire assists over 8000 local older people. To continue to do this we need your support both practically and financially.

Volunteering ............................................................................................................................

If you like to make a real difference by what you do, become a volunteer to help older people. People of all ages say it’s great fun and very rewarding. Whether you give an hour or two a month, or a day each week, you could help us deliver our vital services. We can put your skills to good use. You could help by being a befriending volunteer who spends an hour a week visiting a lonely, housebound older person. Or you could be trained to help older people claim the welfare benefits to which they are entitled, which could make the difference between them having a warm home this winter or staying in bed wrapped in blankets. Volunteers can help at our day care centres as hands-on training is provided, or you could assist in the office or fundraising or on the events team. Our volunteers receive training and are reimbursed for their out-of-pocket expenses. Whether you are ready to use your existing skills or learn new ones ring us at 01296 431911 or Email age@ageukbucks.org.uk

Events ............................................................................................................................

Your help in organising events will assist us to maintain and expand our services for local older people. If you have a few hours to spare we need your support, and it’s great fun! You could run your own event, support our events, or even be sponsored in aid of Age UK Bucks if you take up a walk, running or swimming challenge.

Donations ............................................................................................................................

Any amount can be given at any time, whether it is a once off donation, taking out a standing order or direct debit, payroll giving, gifts in kind, or donations in memory of a loved one. And remember if you sign a gift aid form we can add on 25p from the Inland Revenue for every £1 you give without you having to do a thing more.

Legacies

............................................................................................................................

A gift in your Will helps us to be here, day after day. We make sure that no-one is forgotten or left to struggle on their own. We’re here to listen, support, advise and help people to feel independent and secure in their own homes. Leaving a gift in your Will is a way to ensure we can keep making life better for older people. Without your generosity, we may not always be able to be there.

How ExtraCare are

Changing the face of old age in Milton Keynes

As one of the UK’s leading providers of housing, care and support for older people, ExtraCare has over two decades of experience in creating inspirational communities which enable people to get the most out of life.

ExtraCare Villages embody the belief that later life should be all about staying as active, independent and healthy as possible for as long as possible, with the opportunity to enjoy life, to achieve ambitions and to learn new skills, regardless of age or frailty.

The ExtraCare Charitable Trust has created 13 pioneering villages across the Midlands and North of England, with more under development.

To help make this possible , Villages provide residents with superbly designed, self-contained apartments, arranged conveniently around social and leisure facilities to create lively, buzzing communities. At the heart of each Village are a wide range of facilities such as a restaurant, bar, gym and spa, craft and hobby rooms, shop, hairdressers and IT suite.

Lovat Fields, our first Village in Milton Keynes , opened in June 2007 with 258 beautifully designed and well equipped homes for purchase, shared ownership and rent. The Village enables older people to live independently in their own home. For those who need support, individual needs are assessed so that their care can be delivered by the Village’s dedicated staff team.

The lifestyle on offer at each Village ensures that people have a home of their own, surrounded by friends and neighbours.

The Village was so successful that, as a result of overwhelming demand by local people for places at Lovat Fields, we’ve built a second Village for Milton Keynes at Shenley Wood. The first phase opened in Spring 2012 and the completed Village offers 300 one and two bedroom apartments with 18 social, health and leisure facilities.

Retired Homeowners: your home could be sold to fund care home fees If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home could cost £500-£800 a week or more. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care might seem only a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.

“We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the Local Authority get it all?” “I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children”

Married Couples If you and your husband/wife currently have ‘Mirror Wills’ or ‘Joint Wills’ you risk leaving your share of your home to your husband/ wife for it simply to be swallowed up in care home fees. A legal trust arrangement within your Will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose.

Have you considered what will happen if your child/children experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? What will happen if your child/children experience financial difficulties and enter bankruptcy? Did you know that Capital Gains Tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children?

Widowed/Single The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now.

It’s not too late to put it right – contact us today for advice.

Collective Legal Solutions are experts at helping you protect your hard earned wealth. Contact us today for your FREE information pack.
