Introduction ............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

About Age UK Dacorum: Who we are ...............................................................................................................................

Age UK Dacorum was founded in 1984 and is an independent charity and a company limited by guarantee. Our office is situated in the High Street, Hemel Hempstead. Our services are targeted at all older people (aged 50+) and their carers living in the Dacorum Borough area. Our mission is ‘To promote the wellbeing of all older people and to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience’. We deliver that through the services we offer and through working with older people and their carers to promote the ‘voices of older people’.

Raising the Profile of Older People

............................................................................................................................... .....

Through our extensive networks and partnership working, we work to safeguard the rights of older people, support their active involvement as citizens and seek the fulfilment of their aspirations. We deliver this through our schemes and by actively involving older people in forums, debates and consultations, enabling them to have their voices heard. We also represent older people and their carers at a range of events to raise the profile of older people/carers and ensure that the services offered reflect the needs of our clientele.

............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

Age UK Dacorum provides the following services: ............................................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................. ....................

Active Living Clubs

............................................................................................................................... .....

Weekly social clubs in Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted from 10.00 am to 2.30 pm, providing a hot mid-day meal and activities, e.g. bingo, quizzes, board games, plus monthly outings to a pub for lunch or to a garden centre. There is an annual trip to the seaside and a Christmas party. Door-to-door transport provided.

Befriending ............................................................................................................................... .....

We provide friendship and support for older people who are lonely, bereaved, isolated or housebound to encourage social interaction and companionship. This makes a huge impact on their quality of life. A volunteer with similar interests is matched who then visits weekly to chat and socialise. Many volunteers take their befriendee shopping or on other excursions. As the relationship builds between them, a friendship grows.

Carers’ Support ............................................................................................................................... .....

We provide home visits and regular telephone support for older people caring for others. Through information and emotional support we help carers take control of their lives. We help them access the appropriate services including their financial entitlements, a carer’s assessment, sitting services and respite breaks. We have fortnightly support group meetings in Hemel Hempstead and monthly in Tring where carers can have a break, some fun and pick up tips and advice from other carers.

Cogs Clubs (for people with memory loss)

............................................................................................................................... .....

These clubs are modelled on Cognitive Stimulation Therapy and are for small groups of people with mild to moderate memory loss. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy is a programme of activity sessions recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Research has shown it works as well as medication. A Cogs Club is approximately five hours of structured activities with lots of fun and laughter. They are held in Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and Aldbury, and we hope to open further clubs in 2017. The carer benefits by getting a much needed break from caring responsibilities.

Don’t worry. How reassuring to hear those words from someone you trust. If you are considering residential care or require care and support in the home, have you thought about arranging Lasting Powers of Attorney? An LPA ensures that someone you trust can take decisions on your behalf, should you become incapable of dealing with your finances, property or personal welfare. It is very simple and straightforward to set up and brings peace of mind for you and your family.

What is the alternative? If you lose capacity to make decisions without an LPA in place, it’s a big expensive headache for the family to sort out. The legal process to appoint someone to look after your affairs can be complicated and very stressful. In the meantime bills cannot be paid; financial and practical matters cannot be looked after. Protecting your interests At Rowlington Tilley & Associates we specialise in protecting the interests of both elderly and incapacitated clients. We provide friendly, professional and jargon-free advice to individuals, their families and carers. Our expertise includes LPAs, deputyship order applications and welfare benefit entitlement checks.
