ESS AGE ’S M I am delighted to have recently been elected as Chairman of Age Concern Guernsey. I would like to thank outgoing Chairman Lester Queripel for all his efforts and steady hand on the tiller over the last three years. Your committee is supportive of many new ideas that we will be exploring and developing over the coming months and I hope that these will bring added benefits for members to enjoy. As we head into difficult times we must prepare for and ensure that any entitlement offered is communicated in a way that is easy to understand and most important easy to access. This ‘Guide to Services’ is a start, I would urge you to read the information contained in this booklet which is a guide to you rather than an endorsement. Services offered may not all be relevant to you all now, however may be of use to you or someone you may know in the future.

CHA IRM AN

Dear All

Your help and comment through committee members or myself will be most welcome so please let us know and let’s see what we can achieve.

Best wishes David Inglis Chairman Age Concern Guernsey

INT ROD UCT ION

Guernsey

Age Concern Guernsey is a Guernsey charity which was founded in 1993 to provide support and social events for elderly people.

At the centres members pay 50p contribution towards expenses, plus a further contribution of 50p if they use one of our minibuses.

The charity organises three social centres in Guernsey, managed by volunteers. Each centre meets on one afternoon a week.

As well as the three weekly centres, there is a programme of other events, including Easter, Harvest and Carol Services, lunches and afternoon teas.

Members come to play games such as dominoes, cards or scrabble, and to enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits or cake over a chat. A short Bingo session is also held, and possibly a raffle. There is a nominal annual membership fee of ÂŁ3 per person.

The charity operates a fleet of four minibuses in Guernsey driven by volunteer drivers, which are available to take members to and from the centres and other events if required (available seats permitting). All Guernsey residents are very welcome to become members.

You may already know about some of the benefits that Social Security provide such as Severe Disability Benefit & Carer’s Allowance for people with very high care needs and Long-term Care Benefit for people who need help to pay care home fees. But you might not know much about the Supplementary Benefit scheme which helps people who need more money each week than they have coming in from their pensions. It’s especially helpful where people may not have a full pension. By claiming Supplementary Benefit, and depending on the level of your income and savings, you can get a weekly cash top-up. You can also have your doctor, nurse and other medical appointments paid for. In the winter, you can also get a winter fuel allowance to help with the cost of extra heating. Some people with special care needs can also get help with the cost of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, stair lifts and showers.

Extra help for Pensioners

There are some rules about income and savings which the staff at Social Security will need to ask you about. But if you call the helpline on 732509 you can get a general idea of whether or not you might get Supplementary Benefit before deciding whether to make a formal claim. If you have more than £20,000 in savings or assets you will not be entitled, but if you are living in a house which you own, the value of the house is ignored. People are sometimes reluctant to apply for Supplementary Benefit, but that shouldn’t be so. Its very existence is to help people on low income. It’s funded from taxation. You will have paid your taxes over the years, so why not apply. Until you ask, you will not know if you are missing out. If need be a Social Security Officer can visit you at your home to take your claim instead of you calling into Social Security. So please call 732509 to find out more or visit the website: www.gov.gg/supplementarybenefit

SPO RTA TIO N TRA N Age Concern Minibuses We operate four Renault Master minibuses to take members to and from events when required. These are all driven by voluntary drivers. Two of our minibuses carry eight passengers and require a car driving licence only. Two carry 14 passengers and require a D1 driving licence. Each week we drive one 14 seat minibus and two eight seat minibuses to each of the three centres; providing 90 passenger seats per week. Our second 14 seater is shared with a local nursing home, and we use it mainly to provide additional seats for our occasional special events. Three of the minibuses are equipped with Turney lifting seats, and one has a tail lift, for the use of passengers who find the steps too high. We have an enthusiastic team of voluntary drivers who give varying amounts of their time. Some do regular weekly or fortnightly runs, subject to holiday commitments of course.

Others prefer to help on a more irregular or occasional basis, depending on availability. We also have four stand-by drivers, prepared to cover for sudden emergencies. However we are always on the look-out for additional help, so if you would like to do some occasional or regular voluntary driving we would be delighted to hear from you. Please see our can you help? page for contact information. A short drivers’ meeting is held every 4 to 6 months to plan the rounds cover for the forthcoming four to six month period. Inevitably there are changes during the period, for example as previously unplanned holidays come up. We provide comprehensive lists of passengers, including collection times, contact phone numbers, addresses, and other collection advice or instructions for address finding, though of course the majority of passengers are regular each week and you will get to know them. Drivers are very welcome to stay to take part in, or help with, activities at the centres or special events. Some do this. Others prefer to drop off passengers and return later for homeward-bound collections.

Guernsey

KEEP WARM THIS WINTER During the winter months, from 1st November until 1st May, we operate a Fuel Fund specifically to financially assist any Guernsey pensioners who struggle to pay their fuel bills. This is available to all Guernsey pensioners. It is not necessary to be an Age Concern member. We can contribute up to £250 towards a pensioner’s fuel costs, and the application process isn’t too intrusive. All we ask is that an applicant fills out an application form, which you can do in the comfort of your own home. We judge every case on its merits and reach a decision as quickly as we can, usually within a week. If the application is successful, we will issue a voucher for either £75, £100, £150 or £250. This can cover electricity, gas, oil or solid fuel. All applications are treated in the strictest confidence. Please don’t sit there shivering. We have the money in our bank account waiting to be spent.

All you need to do to apply is call Lester Queripel, on: 729399 0r his assistant, Mike Hawley, on: 07781-100790

Established in its present form as long ago as 1834, the Ancient Order of Foresters is one of the largest and oldest established friendly societies. The Foresters are responsible for covering circa 10% of the bailiwicks community with health cover with around 6,000 annual policies on our scheme. Company discounts are available on request by contacting the society on 728864. The Foresters is a non-profit seeking society, all funds being applied for the benefit of the membership. Why Medical Insurance? Every thinking person in the Guernsey Bailiwick realises that medical insurance is a `must’ for individuals and families alike. Ill health can strike anyone at any time or age without warning. Unless you and your family are members of a healthcare scheme, a serious illness can bring real financial hardship. If you or your child were ill, would you have to stop and think, `Can I afford a night visit?’ before getting the attention you or your child needed?
