OUR TRUSTEES Peter Brooks (Trustee and Assistant Treasurer)
I am a 67 year old retired funeral director, married and resident in Reigate. I have lived in Redhill and Reigate since I was 10 years of age. Educated at Oxted Grammar School. On leaving school, I worked for three years at the Crusader Insurance Co., Reigate, in their mortgage accounts department. I then joined Stoneman Funeral Service, where I worked for forty years, initially as a bookkeeper and subsequently as a funeral arranger and conductor. In my younger days, I enjoyed athletics, fencing, archery, deep-sea angling, golf, bowls and darts. I enjoy socializing, gardening and for the last few years, have enjoyed competing in the Redhill and District Quiz League. I joined Age Concern at Merstham in 2006, as a volunteer, looking after their day to day finances and bookkeeping.
Nicola moved to Redhill, from South Africa, 14 years ago and has lived and worked in the area ever since. She is a pension actuary and spends most of her time helping companies and pension fund trustees to ensure that members’ pensions remain secure and that members receive clear and accurate information about their options. Nicola also spends time mentoring junior colleagues and is particularly interested in helping young women spot and take advantage of career opportunities. In her free time, Nicola practices tai chi, potters around her small garden and, when time and budget permit, travels to remote parts of the world. Sarah Miller
Nicola van Dyk
Sarah Miller became a Trustee of Age Concern Merstham, Redhill and Reigate in November 2013. Sarah is a qualified actuary and was a Senior International Consultant with Towers Watson until April 2010 when she decided to take a career break to spend more time with her family. While at Towers Watson, Sarah advised multinationals in all areas in connection with their pension and benefit plans outside of the UK, with particular focus on financial accounting and mergers and acquisitions. In addition to her Age Concern trustee role, she is also the Treasurer for the Friends of Dunottar charity thus making good use of her strong financial background. Sarah also enjoys regularly coming into the day centre to help out and spend time with our clients.
Angela Fraser DL (Chairman) Angela has over 25 years’ experience in the Public Service Sector, serving as a Councillor for Reigate and Banstead Borough Council from 1979 – 2000, and for Surrey County Council from 1981 – 85 and 1989 – 2013. Angela has extensive committee experience and executive positions have included Mayor of Reigate and Banstead; Chairman of the Community Services Committee, Vice Chairman and also Chairman of Surrey County Council. Angela has a keen interest in local history and the arts and directorships include Chairman of Reigate Priory Museum Society, Chairman of Surrey Historic Buildings Trust, Chairman Thames Young Mariners and Foundation Governor of Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation. Angela is a proud parent and grandmother and personal interests include gardening, flower arranging, music, theatre, foreign travel and bridge.
Ken Gulati (President) An experienced former Borough councillor and previous mayor Ken is a local solicitor-advocate and believes that authorities should find more economic ways to deliver services. He is involved with a number of local charities for the elderly and the Scouts and returned to politics after a gap of some years upon his election to Surrey County Council in May 2013. Ken is a lawyer who specialises in family law and children matters. In over thirty years of practice he has come to believe that mediation is a better way to resolve family legal disputes than the traditional court processes which can be expensive, stressful and damaging to relationships and the children. He is a member of the Law Society’s Panels on Family Law and on Children. He has established his own firm with a Legal Aid Family Law Franchise. He appears regularly as an advocate in local courts.

Living well – Raven’s homes and service for older people
What is the best fit for you? Raven is a provider of affordable housing in Redhill, Reigate, Earlswood and Merstham, Banstead and Tadworth. We can provide mixed accommodation types for those over 55 including bungalows and one bed and two bed flats. We have a wide range of schemes and tenures to suit your needs! Sheltered Housing – what it is not Sheltered housing is not the same as a nursing home or residential care home. You don’t have to take advantage of all the services on offer. We will work with you to find out what level of service is right for you. We work with our residents to arrange and provide a wide range of social and educational
opportunities at some of our schemes such as IT classes, darts, pool, aromatherapy massage, breakfast clubs and live music events. What if you don’t want to move? Our SOS service – not just for Raven residents! We also provide a service called SOS (sheltered outreach support). We can arrange to call you and/ or visit you in your own home and you don’t have to be a Raven resident to apply. If you would like to join in with any of the events going on at your local sheltered scheme we can help you. However, you don’t have to have anything to do with our sheltered schemes – and SOS isn’t about getting you to move to a sheltered scheme either.

AGE CONCERN SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES MERSTHAM CENTRE Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm The Merstham Centre is the hub for all our activities. We offer a day centre three days per week, providing the opportunity for local older people to socialise, form friendships, participate in mental stimulation through leisure activities and to receive a hot meal. We have an in-house cook and there is a choice of hot or cold meals and snacks every day, or members are welcome to bring in a sandwich from home. However, as a courtesy to other members we ask people not to bring take away’s or other hot food into the centre. Support and advice for varying issues can also be given, thus alleviating isolation and loneliness, promoting good health and preventing hospitalisation. We try to offer a wide range of activities, regularly inviting guest speakers and entertainers to the centre. We have special events and theme days throughout the year and try to incorporate the various themes into our activity sessions, for example, making the decorations for the Halloween Celebrations. The day centre members help with fundraising activities by holding raffles, bingo, clothes and book sales etc. We offer gentle exercises on Fridays and the WEA often provide free arts and crafts classes and other courses for our members. The average age group is 78-88 years and the majority of day centre members are female but the men’s shed is now attracting more male members to the centre. Men’s Shed During 2014 we established a “Men’s Shed” in the garden of our Merstham Centre. A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. Members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. The decision to build a Men’s Shed came after discussions with local health professionals who identified the need for meaningful, age appropriate activities for socially isolated males living in the Merstham, Redhill and Reigate areas.
The shed is a place for men to be together, do some woodwork and generally have a good time. The emphasis is on make do and mend, many projects come from reclaimed timber and we sell finished items to fund new projects. Men’s sheds are now established as part of the health infrastructure that supports programs to improve men’s health and wellbeing. There has been considerable research into the social and medical benefits that a shed can provide and it is widely recognised that the three main plagues of old age are loneliness, lack of purpose and boredom. These are plagues of the human spirit, not the body and there are no medications that can fix this, but joining a shed can help to shift the balance and bring back a meaningful purpose.
No Bingo! No singalongs! A fully fitted and heated workshop awaits with all the tools and timber supplied – and as much tea as you can drink. For further information or to organise a trial visit, call in to see Simon in the shed during opening hours, or phone him on: 0755 7950 628 or phone the office on 01737 645636
Can you help? We appreciate donations of any unwanted tools and equipment that you may have, and we need an ongoing supply of timber, nails, screws, sandpaper etc. for our projects. Please let us know if you have anything that we can use – always happy to collect from the local area! Transport We have a 12 seater mini bus which is used to transport members to and from the day centre, and also for the outings and shopping trips. This service is utilised by the majority of our members because it provides a door to door service which is safer and more comfortable than trying to use public transport. Our paid driver manages the transport service and we have an excellent team of volunteer drivers and escorts to assist him. However, we are always looking for more volunteers to cover staff/volunteer holidays and other commitments. Shopping Trips The shopping trips are generally provided on a fortnightly basis, and usually incorporate a pub lunch on the way. These trips help to promote independence among our members by enabling them to do their own meal planning and shopping. We vary the shopping centres and lunch destinations so that the trips also have a bit of a social component. The driver is available to help take the shopping back into their homes and will arrange for an assisted shopping service for anyone with mobility problems. Outings The outings are generally organised on the alternate week to the shopping trips. Although we usually include some old favourites, we try to introduce some new destinations every season. The schedule is varied, including sea side trips in the summer, lots of garden centres with tea rooms and theatre and pantomime trips during the Winter. Our members have quite specific needs, including accessible toilets, level pathways etc. and it is always a challenge to find new venues that are appropriate. The trips are very popular and early booking is recommended. Computer Classes Our computer classes are proving ever more popular with our members and the interest from the general public is quite high. Our classes are full and we are still managing to accommodate more spaces. We are very grateful to one of our most dedicated volunteers, Anne Hamilton, who teaches our members whatever it is that they want to learn from the basics of switching on a laptop, online shopping and banking, social networking with family and friends to uploading photos.
Befriending Service The Befriending Service provides an opportunity for genuine friendship for people who live alone and have very limited contact with family and/or friends. Volunteers are carefully matched with clients with shared interests and hobbies and will make their own arrangements regarding visiting and any outings directly with the clients. All of our volunteer befrienders are enhanced DBS checked and jointly interviewed for suitability for the role. Some of our befrienders have continued to befriend the same older person for several years and have formed genuine friendships. This is a vital service, helping to alleviate social isolation and loneliness, and is extremely beneficial for our members Hearing Aid Service In partnership with Crawley and East Surrey Hospital Audiology Department, we are an authorised supplier of National Health hearing aid batteries. The Sight for Surrey Hearing Bus also comes to the centre every 12 weeks to provide a hearing aid maintenance service so that members can access trained staff able to deal with any problems they may have with their hearing aids or consumables. Hearing aid batteries are available from the centre during normal opening hours. Volunteer Listening Service We have a day centre volunteer who is able to provide support in the form of listening to any member who may be going through trauma, bereavement, ill health or any issue that they would like some support with. To have somebody that is able to listen to your worries within a safe environment is crucial to maintaining good mental health and ensuring emotional stability. Although this service is only available by appointment, there is not a long waiting time, unlike formal counselling services which can take several months to organise. Chiropody service We have a visiting chiropodist, Michelle, who holds a regular clinic at the day centre. This service is widely used by our members and is available to non-members. Michelle will also attend home visits on request. Belmont Eye Care An ophthalmologist and staff from Belmont Eye Service visit the day centre regularly to conduct free eye examinations, advice and prescriptions. This is very convenient for members who may find it difficult to travel to a high street optician. Beautician Service We have a visiting beautician who can provide a range of services, including hairdressing, to our members either at the centre, or in their own homes. A list of available services and cost is available from the office.
