Introduction ............................................................................................................................... ...............................................................................................................................

Age UK Newcastle is the new name for Age Concern Newcastle. We are the leading older people’s organisation in the city and have worked with and for older people since 1965, providing a range of services and support to people aged 50+ in Newcastle upon Tyne. Our ambition is to “add life to years as well as years to life” and to enable older people in Newcastle to make the most out of later life. In doing this we aim to be: F Person-centred – putting older people and their families and carers at the heart of everything we do F Responsive – listening to what older people tell us they want and need – and acting on what we learn F Respectful – treating people as they would want to be treated F Challenging – towards discrimination and stigma and stereotypes relating to older people F Positive – celebrating later life and the contribution older people make F Innovative – developing new ideas to support a changing society We are working with the Newcastle City Council and other organisations to help make Newcastle an Age Friendly City and a great place to grow old. We aim to make sure everything we do is to the best possible standard. We hold Investors in People (IIP) status.

What we do: ............................................................................................................................... ...............................................................................................................................

Age UK Newcastle provides a wide range of support, activities and opportunities for people aged 50-100+ in Newcastle. Whether you are 50 or 90, and whatever it is you want out of later life, we aim to ensure there is something for everyone at Age UK Newcastle. We can support you in your own home, we organise groups and activities in local communities to help you remain active, healthy and involved, and we have a number of citywide and city centre activities and services.

Age UK Newcastle... at home If you are finding it more difficult to get out and about, Age UK Newcastle is here for you. We can offer help and support to enable you to do the things you want to do, that are important to you so you can continue living at home, enjoying later life. We can also provide care and support to help you get out and about, help to keep your home clean, safe and tidy, and personal care if you need it through our professional Care at Home service Your Life, Your Way, Your Choice.

Befriending For many older people later life can become quite lonely, especially if you are one of the 15,000 over 65s in Newcastle who live alone. Our befriending service can help reduce loneliness through a regular visit from one of our volunteer befrienders, providing contact, company and conversation. Your befriender can also help and support you to get out and about, get involved in things going on in your community and make new friends, as well as reconnecting with old friends.

To find out more about our services or to volunteer as a befriender, call our Customer Services Team on 0191 232 6488, call into our offices at 5th Floor, Hadrian House or email enquiries@ageuknewcastle.org.uk

Hairdressing at Home Our hairdressing at home scheme provides older people with details of friendly, reliable and properly vetted hairdressers and barbers. If you find it difficult to get out to the hairdressers, contact us to find out about Hairdressing at Home. When you contact us we will: F Find out your requirements F Look at any specific needs you may have F Make sure that basic facilities and precautions are in place within your home F Provide the contact details of up to three hairdressers for you to make your own arrangements, or arrange an appointment for you with one of our registered hairdressers/barbers F provide information on what you might expect to pay for a range of hairdressing services. We find that, once linked with one of our hairdressers/barbers, many older people maintain that link and receive regular visits to have their hair done.

Age UK Newcastle...in the community ............................................................................................................................... ...............................................................................................................................

Over the next three years we aim to provide more services, support and opportunities within local communities so you can access the help you need and make the most of things happening on your own doorstep. We are already developing more opportunities in some parts of the city, in particular in the East End to add to our Lunch and Leisure clubs which take place all over the city.

Lunch and Leisure Clubs Our lunch and leisure clubs provide a regular opportunity to get out of the house, meet with other people and stay active and involved in the community.

You can get in touch with us directly if you are interested in joining one of our lunch and leisure clubs, or referrals can be made by someone else, including friends, family, carers, GPs, Social Workers and Community Health Services. There is a charge for your meal, and an extra charge if you need us to provide you with transport. To find out more, or if you are interested in volunteering at one of our lunch and leisure clubs call our Customer Services Team on 0191 232 6488, call into our offices at 5th Floor, Hadrian House or email enquiries@ageuknewcastle.org.uk

Lunch and leisure clubs take place across the city and on different days of the week. Many of the clubs are run by volunteers. They provide a hot meal, a chance to catch up with friends and have a chat as well as activities and opportunities to learn new skills. We can provide door to door transport, or you can make your own way to your lunch and leisure club. A bit more help and support to get around, we run a number of clubs with staff on hand to provide an extra bit of support. We also have three lunch and leisure clubs for older people from a Black or Minority Ethnic Background, including groups for the Chinese and Asian communities, to provide an opportunity to connect with other older people who share the same language and culture.

Belsay Day Centre

Age UK Newcastle...in the East End

............................................................................................................................... ...............................................................................................................................

The Belsay Day Centre provides a specialised day service for older people with a disability on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality site in Fenham alongside the day clinics delivered in the Belsay Unit through the NHS. We offer a range of activities, a chance to socialise and a break for family carers. To find out more about the Belsay Day Centre and how it might be able to help a relative or someone you care for, call our Customer Services Team on 0191 232 6488 or call in to our offices at 5th Floor, Hadrian House.

We are currently developing our first ‘community hub’ in the East End of Newcastle where we can provide a range of opportunities – as well as help and support to those who need it – in the local community. We have been talking to local older people and finding out what is already happening in the area and to find out what local older people want and need. As well as the cafe we provide information and advice drop-in sessions in partnership with the East End Library, and we are looking at introducing a range of activities in the area to help local older people stay healthy and active and to enjoy later life.

Community Coffee is our new cafe franchise in the East End Pool Centre in Byker. You can pop in to see us, meet up with friends, or bring the grandchildren during the school holidays. Open 7 days each week, the cafe provides a range of healthy snacks, light meals and drinks. Open to everyone, the cafe promotes healthy living and community involvement. All the profits from the cafe go back into supporting the work of Age UK Newcastle, so why not pop along and see us, and find out what our new cafe has on offer. We are looking at possible opportunities to expand our cafe business into other parts of the city so there could be a Community Coffee coming to your local area in the near future.

Our vision is to develop more ‘hubs’ like this around the city so you have the opportunity to find help and support – or just the chance to stay fit, take up a new hobby and socialise – on your doorstep.

Thursdays, 2pm This is a fun, friendly, social class suitable for those new to exercise and all levels of fitness. During the session we use a variety of equipment such as hand weights, resistance bands, steps, gym balls, exercise bikes and balance pods etc. The class is designed to help improve cardiovascular fitness, build strength/muscle tone, balance/ coordination and flexibility. Individuals can work at their own level performing an exercise at a station for one minute, under the supervision of the instructor, to ensure correct technique etc. before moving onto the next. The exercises are designed to help maintain independence by staying active and relate to everyday tasks i.e. dressing, lifting heavy objects, walking, getting on and off the bus, climbing stairs, getting in and out of the bath/car/chair etc. making everyday tasks easier to manage. Exercises can be tailored to the individual as the instructor has a wealth of experience and is qualified in exercise referral and prevention on falls and fractures and specialises in designing programmes for individuals with conditions such cardiovascular disease, hypertension, respiratory conditions, cancer, diabetes, obesity, joint problems, knee/hip replacements, arthritis, MS, Parkinsons etc. “Our tutor is extremely good and sympathetic and also a very good listener.”
