The Pilgrim House Trust (formerly Age Concern) was established in 1988. Our aims and objectives are to care and support older people living in the Borough by creating a network of services including Luncheon Clubs and Information & Advice. We are a registered charity which provides a service to the over fifties within our community. Currently we support over 150 older people attending our clubs, as well as providing information and assistance to some 100 callers per month at our Advice & Drop in Centre. We work closely with the local Borough Council and Dorset County Council to ensure our support goes to the people that who need it, and are well supported in this by a committed team of volunteers. However to maintain our current level of service and to develop a strategy for the future we need more members and volunteers. Please consider joining us! Every new member can make a difference. THE PILGRIM HOUSE TRUST is an independent charity providing services for the elderly and the community of Weymouth. Pilgrim House is proudly owned and run by The Rotary Club of Weymouth, and is situated at 1, Hope Street, Weymouth DT4 9TU. We are very close to the Town Bridge and the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shopping centre so very easy to reach.

HISTORY Pilgrim House was purchased over 50 years ago by the Rotary Club of Weymouth. It was used for the good of the elderly of the town at a time when there was little or no alternative available. A few years ago the building was passed to Age Concern Weymouth and Portland, however for various reasons, in 2010 it was considered more beneficial to return the building ownership to the Rotary Club of Weymouth. Since that time the function room has been refurbished, and a licensed bar introduced. With a building offering two entrances, one with a passenger lift and stair lift plus a disabled toilet, the building was perfect for the services it was providing.

Our patron is the well known actor Trevor Peacock (Jim Trott in the Vicar of Dibley) who is more than generous with his support.

With a team providing strong financial control, and an energetic function organising group, the future of Pilgrim House is very bright. The Rotary Club of Weymouth uses Pilgrim House for various functions, and it provided a wonderful venue for visiting Rotarians during the Sailing Olympics. Rotary evening meetings are held at Pilgrim House, where we are fortunate to have the services of a local outside caterer, to ensure a varied and tasty menu for Rotary members. The outside catering facility is of course available for private functions if required. We are therefor extremely proud that PILGRIM HOUSE remains open offering a variety of ever expanding services.

FUNCTION ROOM PILGRIM HOUSE now offers for use its newly refurbished function room complete with licensed bar. With a seating capacity of 65 for dining and a spacious bar area we can comfortably accommodate a variety of events such as:- CHARITY OR FUND RAISING DINNERS - WEDDING or CIVIL PARTNERSHIP RECEPTIONS - WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES AND SPECIAL BIRTHDAYS - WAKES - CORPORATE EVENTS.

LUNCH CLUB We strongly feel that PILGRIM HOUSE is the perfect drop in centre for Weymouth’s elderly. We have a fully functioning kitchen, and we are already running our lunch club on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is a service that we are eager to expand. ONE-TO-ONE COMPUTER TRAINING In addition to our Lunch Club, we have our own IT Room and offer one-to-one computer training lessons. THE FUTURE OF PILGRIM HOUSE. Largely thanks to the dedication of our board of Trustees and the continued support of the Rotary Club of Weymouth, the future of Pilgrim House Trust is now secure. Our services to the elderly of Weymouth are being increased and we very much want to expand our successful ‘social’ lunch club. A weekly Saturday club is held outside of Pilgrim House which is a thriving get together, in a custom built building. Once a month the dancers get together to hold a very well attended Tea Dance. Membership of the Pilgrim House Trust is charged at only £5.00 per person, per year. Anyone over the age of 50 qualifies, and after just two years under Rotary, the membership has reached in excess of 150.

Members are issued with a “Pilgrim Pass” which is a simple membership card which entitles a member to discounts from local Weymouth businesses, and also includes reliable trade contacts for plumbers, builders, tilers etc. The Surgery offers are to be increased to include other areas of assistance to not only members, but also to our over 50 s local residents. Fun classes, such as art lessons, keep fit, enlightening talks are just part of what is being developed at Pilgrim House. If you have assets exceeding £23,250 - including your family home you may have to fund Long Term Care costs by yourself. Most of us would prefer to see our home, savings and other assets eventually pass to our family and loved ones. Yet government guidelines for Long Term Care funding mean that this wish may never become a reality. The guidelines state that anyone with assets over a threshold of £23,250 have to make a contribution towards their care fees, if not fund them altogether. As the average family home is now valued at £163,853 (Nationwide House Price Index, November 2012) any homeowner applying for state assistance with Long Term Care fees will almost certainly be refused. And with more of us needing Long Term Care as a result of living longer than ever before, serious consideration must be given now to how you will fund these fees without eroding your family’s legacy. You may think you can avoid the problem by giving away your assets now and escaping the attention of your Local Authority in the future. However, under current rules, this would need to be done with caution as your Local Authority may have the power to include any gifted assets in their assessment, as if they had never been given away. The harsh reality therefore could be that you are still

expected to pay for care, even though you no longer have the assets to cover these costs. This could mean a reliance on state provision, which would naturally reduce your choice and location of care home. Having worked hard all your life to enjoy a lifestyle of freedom and choice, do you really want to have your care home chosen by your Local Authority?
