1st International meeting of diabetes and bone Background and Aim Diabetes is one of the fasting growing diseases in the western world and is becoming a huge problem in emerging economic power houses such as India and Asia and particularly China. The number of patients is staggering and the rate of newly diagnosed diabetics continues to grow. This is especially as Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DMT2) is associated with obesity which in itself is becoming a global health problem. Osteoporosis is another disease increasing due to aging populations and an accompanying increase in fractures. There are approximately 1.5 million fractures per year in the USA .The population suffering low bone density is about 44 million, of which about 14 million are osteoporotic. The cost of the disease has been estimated to be in the region of $22 billion annually. The mortality after a hip fracture is around 50 % in the first year. Rising morbidity is accompanied by loss of independence. Despite effective drugs reducing the fracture burden by about 50-60% the disease is still not recognized, diagnosed, or treated.
Learning objectives By attending this live educational meeting the learners will be able to: • Assess fracture risk in diabetic patients • Utilise the latest pathophysiology of bone fragility in diabetes • Utilise the latest diagnostic tools and treatment options for diabetes related fractures
Target audience Endocrinologists, Diabetologists, Rheumatologists, Internal medicine and primary care physicians.
